Witty, warm, and poignant, food blogger Sasha Martin's memoir about cooking her way to happiness and self-acceptance is a culinary journey like no other.   Over the course of 195 weeks, food writer and blogger Sasha Martin set out to cook—and eat—a meal from every country in the world. As cooking unlocked the memories of her rough-and-tumble childhood and the loss and heartbreak that came with it, Martin became more determined than ever to find peace and elevate her life through the prism of food and world cultures. From the tiny, makeshift kitchen of her eccentric, creative mother, to a string of foster homes, to the house from which she launched her own cooking adventure, Martin's heartfelt, brutally honest memoir reveals the power of cooking to bond, to empower, and to heal—and celebrates the simple truth that happiness is created from within."This beautifully written book is both poignant and uplifting. Not to mention delicious. It's an amazing family tale that reminds me of The Glass Castle, but with more food. And not just any food: We're talking cinnamon raisin pizza." —A.J. Jacobs, author of The Year of Living Biblically "Life From Scratch is an unconventional love story. This beautiful book begins with the quest of cooking a meal from every country—a noble feat of it's own!—but then turns it into something far beyond a kitchen adventure. Be prepared to be changed as you experience Sasha's journey for yourself." —Chris Guillebeau, author of The Happiness PursuitFrom the Hardcover edition.

Life From Scratch: A Memoir of Food, Family, and Forgiveness, by Sasha Martin

Review ''Poignant, heartwarming and generously filled with delicious recipes.'' --Kirkus Reviews ''Martin, a food writer and blogger, spent 195 weeks cooking meals from every country of the world. But the most memorable moments in this spirited narrative take place in the many weeks before those 195, and they have surprisingly little to do with food…There is plenty here to engross memoir lovers.'' --Publisher's Weekly ''Martin peppers this memoir with recipes reflective of her life's circumstances of the moment, from stuffed artichokes to apple pie. Her assured prose endows this narrative of an atypical upbringing with both immediacy and poignancy.'' --Booklist ''An amazing family tale. Poignant and uplifting, not to mention delicious.'' --A. J. Jacobs, New York Times bestselling author of The Year of Living Biblically ''A poignant memoir. The author, a popular food blogger, reaches into her past to figure out why she began cooking in the first place. As she untangles her deeply emotional relationship with food, what she finds out about herself will make you cry and laugh - and feel very hungry.'' --Woman's Day magazine

Each bite By wogan Sasha Martin writes this book to describe her determination to cook and have her family eat a meal from every country in the world. She works on this project, which she depicts in her blog for 195 weeks. Her work is cut out for her since her husband is a picky eater with several absolute dislikes and her daughter is a young infant. What her story becomes, more than a cooking exhibition is a story of a troubled life full of rejection and most of all a search and hunger for peace of mind. Her mother is eccentric and when she and her brother are young her mother works sewing in their apartment, even though she would be able to be qualified as a teacher. Sasha has 3 other siblings which her mother gave custody to their father when they divorced. Their love is mutual, but their mother's extreme behavior leads school officials to call social services. Sasha and her brother are tossed back and forth until their mother gives guardianship of them to her friend who moves frequently around the world. It seems that the friends wanted a son and Sasha is extra baggage. The story is hard and we are privy to her angst and sorrows and tragedies. We also learn some of her mother's recipes and more of Sasha's. There are 29 included. Many have exotic ingredients and are quite complicated. At one point Sasha suffers from cyanide poisoning from cassava. She changes her recipe in her blog but does not warn readers of the dangers of improper preparation. However, within the pages is a meat sauce recipe that is marvelous as well as an orange chicken and a dark chocolate Guinness cake with Bailey's buttercream icing.Sash learns and imparts her lessons, both in cooking and in life. There is a need and a joy in community. Those who enjoy stories of cooking and are interested in reading stories of a family caught in a struggle to accept themselves and discover a good life might enjoy this book.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful read! By Mike Wallace I loved this book. Sasha Martin is a blogger, a wonderful writer and an excellent story teller. Not to mention an experienced cook. This book captured my attention immediately as it launched into the story of her childhood and memories of her mother making due with what she had.Martin's narrative of her childhood and her memories of her mother become even more interesting as she starts to fill in the blanks with some family backstory. Her ability to bring her childhood memories to life is a credit to her ability as a writer. There are also recipes. I loved the first crepe recipe, which reminded me of my mother's crepe recipe. We would gather around the kitchen while my mom meticulously cooked each thin little pancake and then we would eat them with syrup and butter. Memories of food have a way of bringing our past to life. I think this is why I enjoyed this book so much. This is a fun read and it is never boring. It even brings up questions about life, and decisions, and how choices affect our history and the people we have in our lives. This is a unique history with an emphasis on food and how it affects our lives and memories.

It was a distraction in her childhood and something that reminded her in a good way of the more positive aspects of her mother By Ms Winston I found this book to be more than I thought it would be when I selected it --- more in that it is certainly not just a collection of instructions on how to cook dishes from around the world but rather a memoir of a dysfunction childhood with a mother of a type all too common in the 1960s and 1970s. Those of us who lived through those times well remember some women abandoning children to fulfill themselves. Miss Martin's mother had both the education and credentials to have supported her two children from a relationship with a feckless charmer but instead chose to live a marginal life in order "to fulfill" some strange dream. In the process she lost custody of them..which ended in tragedy for her son and a troubled life for her daughter that lasted for years.Cooking and eating became part of the healing process for the author. It was a distraction in her childhood and something that reminded her in a good way of the more positive aspects of her mother. As an adult she set out on her project of cooking one dish from 195 different countries. I enjoyed the book even though it was tough reading in some spots. It is more of a memoir than a book about cooking except as metaphor. However, I think it will have wide appeal for those who read the author's blog, who enjoy reading memoirs, and who are interested in popular culture of the last half of the 20th century.

Orphaned and innocent, Samantha Evans was easy prey for con man Louis Cantrell. He left her broke and pregnant, but she persevered. Four years later, surrounded by a loving family, Samantha’s life seems to be headed in the right direction as she cares for her young daughter, pursues her dream of becoming a child welfare worker, and dreams of marrying Patrick Wheeler, the young law student she ran over in the sonic parking lot. The only thing standing in the way of those plans is Patrick’s refusal to accept Christ in his life, but they’re working on that. At least they were until Louis Cantrell walked back into her life. A God that made the universe, absolutely. A God that hears and answers prayers, not so much. Patrick Wheeler loves Samantha—and her little girl—but he’s done with Christ. Two Christian fathers dead, a Christian mother who suffered through those heart breaks despite her faith. And as faithful as Samantha is, God is allowing Louis to mess with her life a second time. Driven by love and desperation, Patrick proposes marriage and Samantha refuses. How can she choose a con man over him? Louis is welcome to her. A tragedy followed by a surprising confrontation with God drives Patrick back to Samantha’s side. Can he reconcile with God before Samantha and Bobbie are lost to him forever?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. but I recommend reading Callie By Carrie This is the fourth book in the Women of Valley View series. It can stand alone, but I recommend reading Callie, which is where you first meet Samantha and her sister, Iris.I loved delving further into Samantha's story and seeing how much she has matured. As with the rest of the stories in this series, I found myself immersed in the lives of the characters. Samantha has come a long way and I couldn't help but empathize with her and the struggles she had in her faith. Sam has made a great life for herself and her daughter. She is in a promising relationship, although she will not allow it to go any further until her boyfriend, Patrick, understands his need to allow Jesus to become his Lord and Savior. Things seem to be going well until Louis comes to town and forces himself back into her life and that of their four year old daughter. All of a sudden, Samantha is forced to make some very serious decisions. There are some intense moments for sure, but they are lightened by the antics of this sweet and precocious four year old. You will fall in love with her and laugh along at her interactions with her invisible friend. Or is it her guardian angel? You decide.

As with all of the books in the series, it can be read as a stand alone. However, the entire series is exceptional and you won’t want to stop until you’ve read them all.Due to circumstances far beyond her control, Samantha had to grow up fast. Being young and naïve, some of her past decisions have left permanent marks in her life; some good, some not so good. Going forward though, Samantha has given her life to God and wants to live a life worthy of Him. With the support of her family, Samantha is taking all of the steps necessary to create a good family life for her daughter, Bobbie. She has left her past behind with little thought to it until her past shows up on her front door with demands. She has no problem laying down the ground rules but an unexpected tragedy causes Samantha to ponder whether God uses punishment as consequences for sin.Patrick is in love with Samantha but she has made it clear that she won’t compromise her belief that they cannot be unequally yoked. Although Patrick has been taught about God, he has experienced too much heartbreak and doesn’t believe a loving God exists. But the God problem is keeping him from a life with Samantha.I think my favorite part of this story is how sweet four-year-old Bobbie has no qualms about her faith. She knows her angel is watching out for her and she has no problem sharing the news.Samantha is a great story that demonstrates being a Christian doesn’t exempt the believer from a life with real problems and sometimes horrible tragedies. It is being a Christian that allows the believer that extra source of strength to more than survive, to actually thrive. It is also a great reminder that forgiveness is not just for the offender but for the believer’s growth as well. I loved the book and all of the wonderful themes within it.I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion which I’ve provided here.

Beautifully written By Sharon Dean Samantha: Women of Valley ViewBy: Sharon SrockSamantha's story comes to us in Book 4 from the Women of Valley View by Sharon Srock. Samantha was first introduced to us in Book 1, as a struggling teenage Mother as well as holding the role of being a Mother and Father to her little Sister. With help from the ladies in Valley View, Samantha was able to find a home and set roots down for her family and get back into school so she could lead a normal life and fulfill her dreams to take care of her family. With the rough path her life had taken and not knowing God, Samantha had a lot to learn and hard work to follow. Her persistence and dedication paid off. She even found her Father who abandoned her at a young age. Now Samantha is older, raising her daughter and sharing a home with her Father, his wife and her little Sister. Samantha was so proud! God has shown her His unconditional love over and over. Just when things look up for Samantha and she starts dating a boy, horror strikes. A horror from her past, her baby's Father comes to town. A horror that Samantha isn't sure she can cope with. She turns her trust to God. Can she face the past and deal with the direction her ex-boyfriend, her baby's Father is taking her? Does she have her families support? Samantha's life is turned upside down. Can her life ever be normal again? Her story keeps you reading and pulls all kinds of emotion through your heart. Samantha teaches us courage. Courage through the power of prayer. She shows us what it'll mean to us to not give up, to hold onto your faith in Him and lay your struggles at His feet, He will carry you through. Samantha, through her story, reminds us that His unconditional love for us is so real, He loves us, no matter our path in life. Read with me today her story, be touched by God's grace. Grab your tissues and join me, you will be ever so blessed! Thank you Sharon for a very powerful story!

I love the story, which reminds me of a erotic supernatural Romeo and Juliet. The characters I just absolutely love. Caleb is my new book boyfriend for sure. Mina, I just love her. She is this kick butt demon who has a soft side that wants to love and be loved. This story has it all, action, romance, suspense and even some naughtiness. I highly recommend this book.

By Stephanie Wooddell Finally a book about vampires and demons where they aren't like "oh my, i killed a bunch of people, and now i feel bad!" The characters have room to grow and develop, along with the story. Excited to see where this story goes and how the characters develop in the next book!

It has some twists that you wouldn't see coming. She dares to explore the side many newbie authors are afraid to. I found this book addictive and I can't wait to see what book she comes out with next. You won't be disappointed if you decide to pick this one up. Her characters have their own great personalities that makes you want to get to know them better. The main character is sassy and independent. She does what makes her feel better.

Daniel Mannix, Archbishop of Melbourne from 1917 until his death, aged ninety-nine, in 1963, was a towering figure in Melbourne's Catholic community. But his political interventions had a profound effect on the wider Australian nation too.

Award-winning biographer Brenda Niall has made some unexpected discoveries in Irish and Australian archives which overturn some widely held views. She also draws on her own memories of meeting and interviewing Mannix to get to the essence of this man of contradictions, controversies and mystery.

Mannix is not only an astonishing new look at a remarkable life, but a fascinating depiction of Melbourne in the first half last century.

Brenda Niall is one of Australia's foremost biographers. She is the author of four award-winning biographies, including her acclaimed accounts of the Boyd family. Brenda has degrees from the University of Melbourne, the Australian National University and Monash University. She has held visiting fellowships at the University of Michigan, Yale University and the Australian National University. In 2004 she was awarded the Order of Australia for 'services to Australian literature, as an academic, biographer and literary critic'. She frequently reviews for the Age, Sydney Morning Herald and Australian Book Review.

‘Brenda Niall works up an engaging and fascinating portrait, seen through Mannix’s involvement in key political and religious controversies. For readers interested in the political and cultural life of Australia during the first half of the 20th century, Niall’s highly readable biography will reward handsomely.’ Books & Publishing

‘With characteristic insight, sensitivity, and tact, Niall confirms that Daniel Mannix is a major, if elusive, figure in the modern history of Australia, Ireland, and the Catholic Church…a balanced and convincing account of Mannix’s life and times.’ Australian Book Review

‘Brenda Niall’s central challenge was to uncover the personal face of Mannix from his public speeches…She does this modestly and penetratingly, raising questions and looking for consistencies and surprises.’ Catholic News

‘This is the best life of Mannix we have, superior to other attempts…Writing from inside the Melbourne Catholic experience, Brenda Niall shows how people’s affection for Mannix muted their criticisms of him—even if they knew better. This is one of the significant strengths of a rich book.’ Global Pulse

‘I should say that I expected to take my time over this biography, as I usually do, reading a chapter every other day. But not so, I could not put it down.’ ANZ LitLovers, blog

‘For my money, Brenda Niall’s Mannix is the most wise, shrewd and elegant biography yet produced of this complex and beguiling man. Niall’s irresistible prose strengthens the candour of this fine book.’ Age

‘Calmly magisterial…Niall gives a sense of Mannix’s greatness and of why we can still be awed by him.’ Australian

‘An extraordinary man and an extraordinary book.’ Weekly Times

‘Among living Australian biographers, only Philip Ayres matches Brenda Niall for painstaking research serving narratives at once spirited and judicious…Dr Niall ignores nothing.’ Spectator

‘A biography should not keep you from your chores or have you up past the bedtime to which you’ve become accustomed. That is what thrillers and detective yarns are for…Brenda Niall’s wonderful telling of the life of Daniel Mannix has broken that mould…This book is the work of a master of the art of biography…Gripping.' I have read other books by Brenda Niall and she is a wonderfully human writer of non-fiction and a spectacular historian. She has a lightness of touch, humour and sympathy that is terrific and makes her books more like conversations. That said, the famous Archbishop of Melbourne was not particularly a subject of interest to me – but the reviews were good and so I thought I’d give it a go.It is riveting from beginning to end. Without being a total tragic here – I even read most of the footnotes. For anyone interested in Australian twentieth century history with a special focus on Victoria, Irish-Australian Catholic politics, the Labor Party split, Prime Ministers, Trade Unions, individuals – and no specialist knowledge of Irish history but enough background provided to have it all make sense – this book is fantastic.Incidentally Brenda Niall is intriguingly close to the subject matter. I could have had more on this, but even the bits I got were illuminating. You know this feeling? I felt so sad when I finished this book. I didn’t want to leave it. I felt like I knew all those people and now they’ve gone.Absolutely terrific read.

The author has the advantage of access to some new material and the benefit of over fifty years of hindsight. She is able to lay to rest some old ghosts such as the legend that John Wren gave Raheen to Mannix and introduce new ghosts such as the Archbishop's relationship to the enigmatic Fr Hackett. That said Mannix emerges as no less enigmatic than Hackett and even more obscure as a puzzle than in previous works where writers were certain of Mannix's sanctity. Other new material are the facts of his desire to introduce sex education into Catholic Schools and his understanding of the sexual curiosity of the young and adolescent. I had read once before that one of his great regrets is the way the Church treated strayed priests who had no choice but were excommunicated if they wished to leave and get married. In many ways he was a liberal, he was certainly a revolutionary which makes it all the more puzzling that he threw in his lot with the religiously arch conservative de Valera. A very easy book to read

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fresh view of a fascinating subject By Mouthforhire This is an accessible and readable story about a very interesting and and historically important subject for both Ireland and Australia. While his youth and family life is covered, the major focus begins in 1913 when Mannix came to Melbourne to become Archbishop. Despite being almost as far from Ireland as possible, he had a significant influence on Irish revolutionary politics and was banned from entering Ireland when he returned in 1920.The book also deals with his role in the "Split" in the Australian Labor Part in the 1950s.This story is easy to read but also clearly the subject of very extensive research.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. 4 1/2 stars for this sweet romance By Mrs Readsalot I clicked on this book because I have read other books by Devyn Morgan and enjoyed them. This one was right up there with some of his cutest books. Not a super long book, so not a lot of room for drama or angst. It's a simple story of a guy who likes living in a small town. Not a lot of people in his dating pool, but he does finally meet another guy who is new to town. Naturally they hit it off BIG TIME. But it's really so sweet how they connect with each other. I didn't really love the dialogue in this one. I'm a fan of really clever, snarky dialogue and at times this book had just average dialogue. I mean, it wasn't bad. Just not the kind of stuff that really makes me smile (or even giggle). I'll keep looking for more Devyn Morgan books in the future. Most of them, like this one, leave me feeling happy. :)

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. One Size Does Not Fit AllEvery first-time diner is a potential future regular.I LIVE FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. It’s always on my mind, no matter what side of the transaction I’m on. I think about it when I’m shopping for clothes in a retail store, buying a car at a dealership or dealing with a utility company on the phone. I also have the pleasure of being a customer service agent and relish the opportunity to practice what I preach. The expectations I have of others when I am a customer are the same ones we strive to meet or exceed as a staff every night.I’ve realized that what sets the guest-service superstars apart is the fact that they don’t need to work at it. To them, superior customer service comes naturally. Dare I say, they are simply nice people. If all you want to do is make the killing—get in, get out, get your money—then by all means size up your guest and let your first impression be the only one you act upon. Worse yet, treat everyone exactly the same. But if you want to create a sustainable, profitable business, you need to establish relationships, not customers. The trick is to enter every situation with the thought that this is a two-way interaction, not a one-sided action to be played by the book. How I start the interaction goes a long way toward informing how the other person will respond and ultimately sets the tone for the guest’s satisfaction. We always say we can get someone to eat in our restaurants once. That’s easy. But can we get them to repeat? That’s the challenge. Each day at our preservice meeting we review the guest list with our staff. Our Open Table account indicates “First-Time Diner”—or as we call them, future regulars. Every regular was once a first-time diner. The question is, what did we do to bring them back? Was it the food? Did they receive exceptional service? Did we meet a special request? Maybe all of the above. Certainly the cultivation of every repeat customer began the minute they decided to dine here. How were they treated on the confirmation phone call? Were they put on hold, and if so, for how long? Did they get the reservation they wanted, or did we have to offer alternatives? Are they coming in for a special occasion, and what can we do to make it more special? Can we accommodate a request for a particular table? Whatever the specific need, the more notes we seek and the customer provides, the better we can prepare to serve them and the fewer surprises when they arrive. All this information positions our service staff to appropriately address each guest on arrival. Nothing disappoints me more than the one-size-fits-all method of guest service seen in corporate restaurants. The guy on the first date and the team of business associates are in the restaurant for different reasons and require very different interactions. It is up to us to make sure they both leave thinking they had exceptional service, but if they compared notes, they would not have had the same experience.I do understand the need for standard practices; training would be a nightmare if we simply told staff, “Approach the guest and figure out a way to get them what they need.” But when you hire the right people and create a nurturing environment for them, you don’t need to create a script that allows for no deviation. The minute you tell your staff there is no room for authentic interaction is the minute you guarantee failure when the inevitable deviation occurs. Because that’s when they stop approaching each customer with an open mind.Of course, certain customers can really test your commitment to maintain that open mind right from the start. I have struggled with this challenge myself at times. During Vetri’s first year, I took a call one Friday afternoon from a woman requesting a reservation that night for her boss. We weren’t very busy during the week at this point, but Fridays were booked months in advance. We only had thirty-five seats, so it didn’t take much to fill up, but that also left us no room to hold back a “just in case” table to accommodate last-minute guests.I informed the woman that we were full. “But my boss really wants to come,” she said. “Isn’t there something you can do?” She was very pleasant, and I sincerely wanted to help, but I just couldn’t do it and made that clear with a sense of finality. She didn’t give up. “What if I told you he was the president of a multinational pharmaceutical company?”I replied, “Ma’am, I would love to accommodate your boss, no matter what his position, but we are so small that last-minute reservations are very difficult. However, I will call you back if we get a cancellation.”Sure enough, an hour later a deuce cancelled, so I called her. She thanked me up and down and assured me her boss would be there. That night, a man and a woman walked in wearing jeans and casual jackets and mentioned the name on the reservation. Displaying no body language to reveal my suspicion—at least I hoped not—I seated the table and walked back into the kitchen.I complained to Marc, “That guy whose assistant called just showed up. Look at him, he ain’t the president of anything!” Marc just glanced at him and said, “Well, whoever he is, he’s about to eat real well, so hopefully he enjoys it.”My annoyance wasn’t caused by the fact that this guy didn’t seem to be president material, but because I believed his assistant had lied to me to get him in.I approached the table and greeted the couple again, curious to see where this would go. After a brief exchange, the man asked about wine, and from there my first impression took a sharp turn. We ended up having a spirited conversation about wine and discovered that we were both enamored with the Quintarelli label, swapping stories about recent bottles we’d enjoyed. We continued to talk through the evening, and the couple really enjoyed their time with us. Toward the end of the meal the man asked to meet Marc, and said, “You know, he contributed a recipe to our company cookbook for diabetics and I wanted to thank him.” He reached in his wallet and handed me his business card. Sure enough, he was the president of a major pharmaceutical company. We’ve enjoyed many more meals together, hosted his wedding dinner and since his retirement we’ve flown to the West Coast to cook at his house. He’s become a true friend, thanks to the commitment we made early on to approach each first-time customer with an open mind, with the hope that they might become future regulars.

Really a great read for anyone who loves dining out By Edinorlando I heard an interview with the author on the radio and was immediately intrigued since I have always been interested in the restaurant business and wondered about it's inter workings. What a great read! It answered all of my questions and gave me a much greater appreciation and understanding of what goes into a dining experience be it casual or fine dining. This book covers a wide range of topics that I think would be of interest and helpful to a wide range of readers and as a result, I ordered four copies. One for myself. One for my Daughter In-Law who is a great cook and who has enjoyed a wide range of restaurants from casual to the finest of fine. One for a young friend who is just getting started in the business and...One for another friend who is a GM at a great new restaurant here in Orlando.I'm looking forward to the feedback I get as a result of the three copies I gifted. Should be three different perspectives and I'm sure everyone will gain from the read.

Recently accepted a position as FOH manager at the restaurant I've been serving at for the last year. While I'm familiar with most situations addressed in the book, it offered great ways to resolve the situation in a positive manner. Must read for anyone is the restaurant business, or even people who enjoy dining out a lot!

I have had the distinct pleasure of meeting Jeff Benjamin in his restaurants and what you'll read about in this book is exactly how he is - insightful, humorous, self-deprecating, knowledgeable, and hospitable. The book is an amazing testament to the business Marc and he have created - the city of Philly should be proud to have them!
