Pups of the Spirit puts a whimsical and child-friendly twist on the biblical Fruit of the Spirit attributes in this new board book illustrated by Deborah Melmon. Nine lovable canines romp through the pages of this picture book displaying important traits such as Love, Joy, Peace, Kindness, Patience, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-control. Max is filled with love and likes to greet people with a sloppy smooch; Pete the basset hound is so peaceful he falls asleep; Gigi is soft and gentle with God’s creatures.

Poetic rhyming text and playful illustrations show the pups in various activities, demonstrating their qualities and helping young readers to learn these important spiritual traits.

This super kid-friendly book teaches the fruits of the spirit with pups. Each pup (9) has a unique quality that God has given them: peace, kindness, joy, self-control, gentleness, patience, faithfulness, love and goodness. Each page describes the pup and his pups of the spirit trait in a way that children can understand and relate to.

By Bluerose's Heart This is a cute little book about 9 puppies displaying their strongest "fruit of the spirit". We have Max that enjoys showing his love for others. Joy may have a grumpy bulldog face, but she's really quite joyful. Pete has the art of being at peace conquered. Peanut is a patient little "hot dog". Kay is just overflowing with kindness. Goose has the gift of goodness. Frankie is faithful-"dependable, loyal, and true". Gigi is gentle and warmhearted. Squeaky displays self-control, even when bones are nearby.Grasshopper(5) really enjoyed this story. The only "issue" is that he kept asking about each dog's name, and I'd have to flip back through to remmeber who was named what, and who had which "fruit". (Of course, I really didn't mind!) On the bright side, I think I know these little doggies pretty well now! ;) Also, it's not really a story, exactly. Each dog gets their own two page spread(with a few dedicated to all the dogs) with a description of their "fruit" in action. The pages don't overly create a story. The pictures are cute, and fun to look at. I like that the inside of the dust jacket doubles as a poster. It has all of the dogs with their name and fruit, along with a Bible verse and a discussion question. This really is a great little study resource to use when studying the fruits of the spirit with little ones! I also like that I can use one dog and fruit at a time depending on what we're discussing. (My resources have been exhausted when a certain little one of mine insists on biting his brothers. I'll happily throw this book into the mix, focusing on love and kindness. And gentleness! Or, maybe all of them! ;))*Thanks to Zondervan for providing me a review copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion!

Pups of the Spirit demonstrates to your little ones the fruits of the spirit in the cutest way possible! There are nine pups of the spirit and a page dedicated to each one. It’s cute how it has a giant illustration with the pup demonstrating his particular fruit of the spirit. There is a corresponding page with cute rhyming words about how that dog lives out his fruit. The illustrations are equally adorable and fun, colorful and busy. My daughter liked to take the time to examine each one long after I finished reading the page because there was so much to see! It’s all in the details.I liked that the authors took something adorable like puppies that little ones could relate to and used them to show their particular traits that might also be seen in our children. I talked to my kids and what fruits of the spirt I saw in them. Now they love to turn to that page and talk about “their” doggie!Paige definitely demonstrates joy like the dog whose name is also Joy. She is always happy and finds the good in everything. I liked talking to her about this and how she demonstrates joy and watched her little face light up! Reed is my gentle one so he’s like Gigi in that regard. He didn’t love that I picked a “girl dog” for him but after I explained why, he too lit up!It’s so important to talk to our kids about their gifts and encourage them to work on them as well as the areas they aren’t so strong in. Pups of the Spirit is such an adorable explanation of the fruits of the spirit that it will definitely stick in your little ones mind!

The fund-raiser was supposed to be more pleasure than business, but business was uppermost on the minds of her competition.Across the room, Evan Reese stood in a large group of people. He looked relaxed, seemingly in his element, an easy smile making his extraordinarily handsome face even more gorgeous. It should be a crime for a man to be that good-looking. Tall, rugged, he looked every inch the kind of man who'd be at home in the athletic wear his company designed and sold. There was an aura of confidence and power around him, and above all, Celia loved a man who was sure of himself.Given the long, searching glances they'd exchanged over the last few weeks, she'd be a fool not to entertain the idea of seeing where things could lead.If he wasn't a prospective client.A client she wanted to land very much. She wanted the account—her boss and the agency was counting on her—but she drew the line at sleeping with a man to get what she wanted.Celia turned away from the sight of Evan Reese before she became too enthralled in just watching him. They'd performed a delicate dance around each other ever since he'd fired his last advertising agency. He knew she wanted him—in the professional sense of course. Hell, he probably knew she wanted him naked and in bed too, but she wasn't going to dwell on that. Maybe later tonight when she could afford to indulge in a little fantasy. The problem was, anytime a big company like Reese Enterprises fired an agency, it became open season. The other agencies circled like sharks. It was a dog-eat-dog world, and in reality, she should be over there, shoving herself down his throat like the rest of her competition, but she couldn't help but believe Evan Reese was secretly amused by the attention. He took a different hand. She was sure of it."Celia, glad you made it. Have you spoken to Reese yet?"Celia turned to see her boss, Brock Maddox, standing a foot away. He wasn't drinking. He didn't even look particularly thrilled to be here. Her eyebrow rose. "A tux. Why, Brock, you look positively decadent. However are you keeping the ladies at bay?"He grunted in response, his lips curling in distaste. "Cut it out, Celia. I brought Elle along."Celia looked beyond his shoulder to see his pretty assistant standing a few feet away. When Elle looked her way, Celia smiled and waved."You look beautiful," Celia mouthed.Elle smiled and ducked her head self-consciously but not before Celia saw the faint blush that colored her cheeks.Brock gestured impatiently toward Evan. "Why are you standing over here while Evan Reese is over there?" Brock scanned the room and his expression hardened. "I should have known the old bastard would be here."Celia followed his gaze to see Athos Koteas holding court within hearing distance of Evan. Though she wouldn't admit it to Brock, it made her extremely nervous to see their business rival hammering so relentlessly on Evan Reese. Koteas owned Golden Gate Promotions, and not only had Koteas lured away a few of Maddox's top clients in recent months, he'd also launched a PR campaign against Maddox. It was dirty pool, but it in no way surprised Celia. Koteas was ruthless, and he'd do anything to win."Well, yes," Celia murmured. "His ad execs are busy working Evan over.""Any reason you aren't?"She laid her hand on his forearm. She knew how important this account was to Brock—to everyone at Maddox Communications. "I need you to trust me, Brock. I've studied Evan Reese extensively. He knows I'm interested. He'll come to me eventually. I'm sure of it.""Are you fifty million dollars sure, Celia? Maddox is small, and this kind of deal means our employees keep their jobs whereas if we continue to lose clients and accounts, I can't make any guarantees.""I know I'm asking a lot," she said in a low voice. "But I can't walk over there and pull out the seductive wiles." She gestured toward the women standing around Evan. They weren't making any bones as to how far they'd go to sign him. "It's what he expects, and you of all people know I can't do it. I can land this account on the ideas, Brock. I've spent every waking minute putting this pitch together. There's no way he won't go for it."Brock studied her for a long moment, his eyes gleaming with what looked like respect. She loved working for him. He was hard. He was demanding. And he was the only person she'd presented her side of what had happened in New York in her last advertising job."I never expected you to land the account on anything less than your brilliance, Celia," Brock said softly. "I hope I never gave you any other impression.""I know. I appreciate your confidence more than you know. I won't let you down. I won't let Maddox Communications down."Brock ran a hand through his hair and glanced once more across the room. He looked tired. It was true he worked hard. The agency was everything to him. But in the last few months new lines had appeared around his eyes. More than anything Celia wanted to be able to hand this account to him. He had believed in her when everyone else was willing to think the worst. She glanced up to see Evan threading his way through the throng of people. "Don't look now, but he's headed our way. Maybe you should take Elle and go dance or something."As quickly as he'd approached, Brock turned and melted back into the crowd.Celia sipped at her wine and practiced nonchalance as she literally felt Evan close in. It was impossible to miss him. Her body always seemed to heat up about five degrees whenever he was anywhere near. And his smell. Even amid the hustle and bustle of the crowded room, the mix of so many feminine perfumes, she could pick out his unique scent. Rough. Masculine and mouthwateringly sexy. It made no sense to her, but she was attuned to his every nuance, and that had nothing to do with all the studying up she'd done on him and his company."Celia," he murmured. She turned with a welcoming smile. "Hello, Evan. Enjoying the evening?""I think you know I'm not."She raised one eyebrow and stared at him over the rim of her glass. "Do I?"Evan snagged a flute from a passing waiter and turned his attention fully on her. It was all she could do not to gasp under his heated scrutiny. It was as if he undressed her right then and there in front of a roomful of people. Her blood simmered and pooled low in her belly. He had beautiful eyes, and they were currently devouring her, delving beneath the modest evening gown she'd chosen. He made it seem like she wore the most scanty, revealing dress imaginable. She felt nude and vulnerable under his searing gaze."Tell me something, Celia. Why aren't you over with the rest of the piranhas convincing me that your ad agency will take Reese Enterprises straight to the top?"Her lips curved upward into a smile. "Because you already are at the top?""You're such a tease."At that her smile faded. He was right. She was flirting, and it was the last thing she wanted to do.She glanced across the room to where the other ad execs stood staring holes through her and Evan."I'm not desperate, Evan. I know I'm good. I know my ideas for your ad campaign are spectacular. Does that make me arrogant? Maybe. But I don't need to sell you on a load of malarkey. All I need is the time to show you what Mad-dox Communications can do for you.""What you can do for me, Celia."Her eyes widened in surprise at the blatant innuendo. And then he went on to correct the errant assumption she'd just made."If the ideas are yours and are as brilliant as you say, I'd hardly be taking on Maddox and what the agency could do for me. I'd be hiring you."She frowned and hated that she suddenly felt at a disadvantage. Her fingers curled a little tighter around the glass, and she prayed they wouldn't shake and betray her unease. He studied her curiously, having obviously picked up on her discomfort."It wasn't a proposition, Celia. Believe me, you'd know the difference."In a daring move, he reached a finger out and traced a line down the bare skin of her arm. She was unable to call back the shiver, or the sprinkling of chill bumps that danced over her flesh."I only meant that if you wow me with a pitch and I sign on with Maddox, you won't pawn me off to some junior executive. I'd expect you to oversee the campaign at every level.""And do you anticipate signing with Maddox Communications?" she asked huskily. There was a gleam of amusement in his green eyes. He took a measured sip of his wine and then regarded her lazily. "If your pitch is good enough. Golden Gate has some good ideas. I'm considering them."Her lips tightened. "Only because you haven't seen mine yet."He smiled again. "I like confidence. I don't like false modesty. I look forward to seeing what you have in mind, Celia Taylor. I have a feeling you put every bit of that passion I see burning in your eyes into your work. Brock Maddox is a lucky man to have such a fierce employee. I wonder if he knows it.""Are we moving into the appointment phase?" she asked lightly. "I have to admit, I've enjoyed watching you surrounded by the piranhas as you call them."He put his glass down on a nearby table. "Dance with me and we'll discuss appointment times."Her eyes narrowed. He lifted one finely constructed eyebrow into what looked like a challenge."I've also danced with female ad executives from Golden Gate, Primrose, San Fran Media—"She held up her hand. "Okay, okay, I get it. You're making your selection on who's the best dance partner."He threw back his head and laughed. Several people around them turned to stare, and she had to resist the strong urge to flee the room. She hated the attention that Evan seemed to have no issue with whatsoever. How nice it must be not to have to worry what people thought about you. To have your reputation intact and not have suffered the stupidity and vindictiveness of others. But then men rarely suffered in cases like hers. It was always the woman. The vilified other woman.Knowing no graceful way to bow out of the dance, she set down her own glass and allowed Evan to lead her onto the ballroom floor. To her relief, he held her loosely. To anyone looking on, they could find no fault or impropriety. She and Evan didn't look like lovers, but she knew the thought was present in both their minds. She could see the desire in his eyes and knew he could probably see it in hers. She wasn't practiced at hiding her emotions. Maybe being the only girl in an all-male household growing up was the reason. Her family was a loud, demonstrative lot, and she'd always been regarded as the precious daughter and sister. It would make her life easier to be able to hide her thoughts from this man. Then she wouldn't concern herself over whether he was giving her a shot because he thought she deserved it or whether he was thinking only of the powerful sexual pull between them and how best to capitalize on it.Wow, Celia. Lump him in with all the other jerks you've known, why don't you? Nothing like being tried and convicted based on your gender."Relax. You're thinking way too much," Evan murmured close to her ear.She forced herself to do as he'd instructed and gave herself over to the beautiful music and the sheer enjoyment of dancing with a man who took her breath away."So how is next week? I have Friday free."She jerked back to reality, and for a moment couldn't for the life of her figure out what he was talking about. Some professional she was."I was thinking we could meet informally and you could go over what you have in mind. If I'm interested we could do the whole shebang at your agency. Maybe that'll save us both a lot of time and hassle if I'm not loving your ideas.""Sure. I can do Friday. Friday is good."The music ended, and he held her just a bit longer than necessary, but she was so affected by the intensity of his gaze that she couldn't formulate a single objection."I'll have my assistant call you with the time and location then."He picked up her hand and brought it to his lips. The warm brush of his mouth over the back of her hand sent a bolt of pleasure straight down her spine."Until Friday."She watched wordlessly as he strolled away. He was immediately swallowed up by a crowd of people again, but he turned and found her gaze. For a moment they simply stared at one another and then the corners of his mouth lifted into a half smile.Oh, yes, he knew. He knew exactly what her reaction to him was. He'd have to be a complete moron not to. And he was anything but. The man was smart. He was driven. And he had a reputation for being ruthless. He was the perfect client. She turned to walk toward the exit. She'd done what she'd come for. There was no reason to stick around and be social. If there was any gossip over her dance with Evan, she certainly didn't want to hear it.On the way, she passed Brock and Elle, who were standing somewhat awkwardly to the side. Brock didn't say anything. He just lifted an inquiring brow. Of course he would have seen her dancing with Evan. Brock probably hadn't looked at anyone but Evan all night. A shame, really, since Elle looked fabulous in her black sheath."Friday," she said in a low voice. "I meet with him Friday. No formal pitch. He wants to hear my ideas first. If he likes them, he'll arrange a time for us to hit him with both barrels."Brock nodded, and she saw the gleam of satisfaction light his eyes."Good work, Celia."Celia smiled and resumed her path to the door. She had a lot to do before next Friday.Evan Reese loosened his tie as soon as he walked into his hotel suite. He left a trail of clothing from the door, where he threw his jacket over one of the chairs, to the bedroom where he peeled off his socks and left them on the floor. The desk with his laptop and briefcase beckoned, but for once, the idea of work didn't appeal to him. He was too preoccupied with thoughts of Celia Taylor.Beautiful, seductive, impossibly aloof Celia Taylor. His body had been on heightened sense of alert ever since she walked into the ballroom, and though he'd known the moment she left, he was still tense and painfully aware of her scent, how she felt in his arms, how her skin felt under his fingers the one time he'd been bold enough to touch her.He wanted to do a hell of a lot more than just touch. He wanted to taste her. He wanted her underneath him, making all those feminine, breathy sounds of a woman being pleasured. He wanted to slide his hand between those gorgeous legs and spread her thighs. He would spend all night making love to her. A woman such as Celia wasn't to be rushed. No, he'd get to know every inch of her body. Find out where she liked to be touched and kissed. His fixation with her couldn't be readily explained. It wasn't as though he lived as a monk. He had sex. He never lacked for partners. Sex was good. But he knew that sex with Celia would never be just good. It would be lush and delicious. The kind of experience a man would sell his soul for.She was indeed a beautiful woman. Tall, but not too tall. She would fit perfectly against him, her head tucked just underneath his chin. She often wore her long red hair up in a loose style that told him she didn't pay a lot of attention to whether every strand was in place.

Fury simmered in her veins. She mentally counted to ten just so she didn't explode on the spot."FINAL DECISION: A pleasant read, but not particularly memorable. Enjoyed the premise but didn't think the characters were memorable.THE STORY: Evan Reese is a billionaire businessman and he has wanted Celia Taylor for months. Celia has wanted Evan as well -- as a client for the advertising agency she works for. Celia has been interested in Evan but she has no intention of mixing business with pleasure because she knows that it would completely destroy her reputation. When Evan proposes that Celia accompany him to his brother's wedding in order to do her pitch for his business, they end up masquerading as an engaged couple. Celia wonders what price she will pay for what seems so right between them.OPINION: I found this book an enjoyable, if predictable, read. It was not particularly memorable because the characters seemed flat. At times the book fell into dated diatribes defending the idea of women working. I did enjoy the premise of the book and I thought that it was well executed. It was an enjoyable one time read but there is nothing that would interest me in reading it again.WORTH MENTIONING: This book was originally published as a category romance.CONNECTED BOOKS: A CONTRACT ENGAGEMENT Is the second book in the Diamond Tycoons series and the third book in the King of the Boardroom series. These are merely loosely connected, however. For the King of the Boardroom series, there are small appearances by characters from the other books, but reading those books are not necessary to enjoy this one. The other books in the series are by other authors.STAR RATING: I give this book 2.5 stars.

By Debs First published in 2010 as Billionaire's Contract Engagement (Kings of the Boardroom Book 3), I reread this one. It was good as is all books by Maya Banks. What struck me the most was how a lot of romance writings have changed in the last several years. I think that a lot of the romance books today are more embolden and explicit than they were just a few short years ago. Still, it was a good read for me.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It was alright but a waste of my money By Love a Deal I loved the story. I didn't like the fact that it was such a short story and the ending was so incomplete. literally about four to five pages from the end the author has you wondering who could have cause all of the problems and what's going on with some of the co workers. Then BAM just like that the story ends with no answers and no sequel in site.

Winds of Change, by L. C. Markland

About the Author My name is Paul C. Markland. I grew up in Akron, Ohio. I graduated from Akron East High School. I attended the University of Akron and earned my BA in sociology and criminology. I was planning to attend law school when I felt called to the ministry. I pursued my studies at Malone University. I acquired my MA in Christian leadership and ministries. For over twenty-two years, I faithfully served the Lord as I pastored at two churches and directed a nonprofit organization. I stepped down on June 8, 2014. My family and friends encouraged me to start writing. Since June, I have published two books, All Things Work Together For Good (Romans 8:28) and Winds of Change. I used my father's name to publish both books. I did so for several reasons but the greatest one was to establish a new identity. For the past twenty years, people have referred me to as Pastor, and I am still remembered for the position I once humbly held. Now, a new chapter begins, and I am blessed to have the opportunity to help rewrite it. I have been married to Judy for over twenty-seven years. We have two daughters, Ashley and Samantha.

Markland is a fictional story of a young Iraqi scientist whose family is brutally killed shortly before Desert Storm while the country was under the rule of Saddam Hussein. During Desert Storm he saves the life of a young female American soldier and is given asylum in America where he begins a new life for himself and accepts Christ as his Savior. But things don't end up nearly as happily as one might expect. A chain of events had been unwittingly set in motion that ultimately build up to mankind's near cataclysmic end. Only the godly wisdom and scientific knowledge of one Iraqi man can help change the course of history. This was a very interesting book, one in which you don't know quite where it's going or how the pieces will all tie together in the end.One can't help but cheer on the young Iraqi immigrant as he attempts to make a new life in America, becomes filled with the Holy Spirit, and finds new friends who are more than happy to accept him. But the writing style can be a bit plodding and over-sentimentalized. Every major character is painted in strokes of purity and righteousness. Everyone cares for each other and no one seems to have a single significant character flaw. It's all very nice but feels too surreal like I'm watching a G-rated family sitcom. Also I don't think it is important to TELL the reader about a character's good or bad traits. The reader can infer those through the character's actions as the story unfolds. The ending seemed a bit rushed but I liked how it all tied together. Simply genius.Looking forward to Markland's next book. :-)

By Amazon Customer The author does an excellent job incorporating fact with fiction all the while using prophecy to describe the end times. The novel definitely has everything to capture the readers attention: action mixed in with drama, romance and suspense.

It also showed the grace and redeeming love of God. The scene in the church where the Holy Spirt blew in was my favorite. I highly recommend it.

Review "A riveting near-future medical thriller that reads like the genetically-engineered love child of Robin Cook and Michael Crichton."―John Joseph Adam on Parasite"Readers with strong stomachs will welcome this unusual take on the future."―Kirkus Reviews on Parasite"Fans of [the Newsflesh] series will definitely want to check this new book out. But fans of Michael Crichton-style technothrillers will be equally enthralled: as wild as Grant's premise is, the novel is firmly anchored in real-world science and technology."―Booklist on Parasite"Grant extends the zombie theme of her Newsflesh trilogy to incorporate thoughtful reflections on biomedical issues that are both ominously challenging and eerily plausible. Sally is a complex, compassionate character, well suited to this exploration of trust, uncertainty, and the price of progress."―Publishers Weekly on Parasite"It's a well-grounded medical wariness that gets at the heart of the what the Parasitology series will be asking: What happens when the cure is worse than the disease?"―NPR Books on Parasite"An exceptionally creepy medical-horror thriller that's the perfect spine-tingling read for Halloween...[a] roller coaster ride."―RT Book Reviews on Parasite (4 1/2 stars)"Deft cultural touches, intriguing science, and amped-up action will delight Grant's numerous fans."―Publishers Weekly on Deadline"The zombie novel Robert A. Heinlein might have written."―Sci-Fi Magazine on Feed"A masterpiece of suspense."―Publishers Weekly on Feed (Starred Review)

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Bridge over the River Zombie By TChris As we learned in Parasite, Sal the Tapeworm is inhabiting the body of Sally Mitchell the Dead Girl. Her identity crisis continues in Symbiont. Sal is a chimera, a genetic mixture of human and tapeworm. Most others who are being taken over by tapeworms lose their cognitive abilities as their brains are eaten, but Sal is a special case. In fact, most humans who have been taken over by tapeworms shamble, a sure sign that they are zombies, even if they are known here as "sleepwalkers." A zombie by any other name ... Another clue to the zombie-like nature of sleepwalkers is their drive to gnaw on people who are not being controlled by tapeworms. Again, Sal feels no such urge.Although a zombie apocalypse is unfolding in the background, Symbiont, like Parasite, isn't really a zombie novel. Since the world has enough zombie novels, readers should be grateful for that, although it isn't clear that the reading public's desire for zombies is satiable. Parasite was more of a medical thriller than a zombie novel while Symbiont is a compilation of chase scenes, escape scenes, and "am I human or am I a tapeworm?" scenes.Symbiont feels like a bridge between the first and last novels. Given the novel's length, surprisingly little of significance happens. The meaningful aspects of the novel could have been distilled to 50 pages and incorporated into the last novel or the upcoming one. Mira Grant admits she intended to write a duology but ended up writing a trilogy (perhaps because book buyers like trilogies, making them easier to market). Most of Symbiont gives me the impression of filler designed to turn two books into three.Sal spends the first part of the novel bonding with her tapeworm family and with her uninfected boyfriend while reminding the reader of her automobile phobia (a theme that recurs with tiresome regularity). The conflict that Sal feels -- she knows she's a tapeworm, sympathizes with tapeworms (to a degree), and even thinks from a tapeworm's perspective (although the perspective is informed by human intelligence) -- makes Sally a more interesting zombie than most. Later in the novel she confronts her daddy issues, daddy being a military researcher of infectious diseases who views Sally as a lab rat rather than a daughter. This leads to some weepy feeling on Sally's part and several repetitive scenes that could have been productively excised from the novel. The evil scientist who still thinks he can profit from the zombie apocalypse (apparently failing to realize that zombies have no buying power) is too daft to take seriously. Surviving consumers will be eager have tapeworms implanted in their bodies, knowing that tapeworm-infected people wiped out San Francisco? I don't see it.There are, however, some clever moments in Symbiont. I particularly liked the notion of crows luring sleepwalkers to their deaths as they tumble from a bridge, where waiting sharks put an end to their miserable lives. I also like Sal's divided loyalty between humans and tapeworms. Grant's writing style is fluid and she avoids the worst excesses of zombie novels. Although I was indifferent to most of the novel, I'm looking forward to the final book's resolution of the mess that Sal's creators have made. If I could, I would give Symbiont 3 1/2 stars.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. One scary plausible post-apocalyptic novel By Van @ Short and Sweet reviews Disclosure: I received a review copy from the publisher in exchange for a honest review. In Parasite, Grant introduced us to a very realistic world in which SymboGen, a multimillion dollar company bioengineered a tapeworm for every single person worldwide (well, practically everyone). Tired of getting sick, feeling fatigued or nauseous, or having any aches or pains? Well, thanks to SymboGen you can say bye-bye to all that. Having tailored made tapeworms was suppose to change the world, and it did…just not for the better. Readers have seen the calm before the storm in Parasite, and now in Symbiont we get a bird-eyes view of the storm and all the aftermath when scientists try to play god.Symbiont picks up a couple of weeks after the events in Parasite, Sal has solid confirmation on what she unconsciously already knew; that she (tapeworm) fully integrated the moment she woke up from the coma. Most of Symbiont read like the usual zombie apocalypse book/movie. People aren’t in denial anymore and the government is finally taking the matter seriously as the outbreak has spread far and wide and there no way to contain it. There are four main groups at play: Dr. Cain, Dr. Banks, Sherman and The Governemnt (General Mitchell, USAMRIID). They all have different perspective on the outbreak, and eventually we learned everyone’s true motives. However, what is clear from the start is that Sal is extremely important and everyone wants her. Everyone believes that she is a crucial part to their master plan and the key to winning the war.Symbiont is set up exactly like the first book, with the book divided in various stages (Part 1,2…). In addition to the usual excerpts from the children’s book, magazine, audio/visual transcripts detailing Dr. Cain and Dr. Bank’s experiment, readers also get to glimpse short journal entries from most of the characters. I really like the journal entries from the secondary characters. It gives us an in-depth look at what they’re doing and thinking even if they don’t get much page/scene time thus still creating a fully realized and developed character. The pacing of the book was pretty consistent, there’s a lot more happening in terms of action since everyone is trying to kidnap Sal and Sal trying to escape. And then there are the hordes of sleepwalker on every corner. I still find it creepy whenever Sal encounters a sleepwalker group all hissing her name. Many reviewers said that this book suffered ‘second book syndrome’ and while I liked the book, I can agree on some parts. The book is very lengthy with it clocking out at a little over 500 pages. I agree that there were a lot of unnecessary scenes and the author could have tone down on not describing every little thing. But for the most part I enjoyed it, and didn’t care too much as the story and characters kept me engaged. In the first book I wasn’t really a fan of Sal, I said that she read like an adolescent; needing to relearn everything again when she woke up from her coma. However, I’m happy to say she doesn’t anymore. Sal grasps the gravity of the situation now and came to the realization that she isn’t human and she embraces it. For a tapeworm, Sal has a really big heart. She’s more caring and shows more humanness and compassion than the humans around her. There were a couple of unintelligent things that Sal did in the book, many people might get annoyed by it but again I blame it on her caring too much. Example, Sal’s dogs are still at the apartment and the area is swarmed by sleepwalkers. Most people wouldn’t risk their lives to go get the dogs, but not Sal. She never once contemplated on leaving them.Overall, Symbiont was an enjoyable read. Grant is a master when it comes to characters and world-building, and if you haven’t checked out any of her work (also writes under Seanan McGuire), you’re sorely missing out! Symbiont is a blend of Science Fiction, Horror and Medical-Thriller and I still can’t help feeling how realistic the plot is. It may be a post-apocalyptic novel and all but oh so plausible and possible…that it’s downright scary. I highly recommend checking out this series, starting with the first book, Parasite. The third and final book, Chimera comes out next year; can’t wait to see what happens next!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I didn't love it as much as the first one but still a good story. By Amazon Customer I think Mira Grant could write a traffic ticket and I'd read it. :D I've been anxiously waiting for this book since I finished reading book one, "Parasite", in October of 2013. I was delighted when it was announced several moths ago that instead of two books, Grant will write three in this series. Frankly, I doubt she could have wrapped this up in two books. And these books are not short. "Parasite" was 512 pages and "Symbiont" is 516 pages. With plots as twisty and complex as Grants, she needs those pages."Symbiont" starts shortly after "Parasite" ended as Sal and company confirm their suspicions about the tapeworm in her body. That's the first of numerous revelations and twists and turns throughout the book. As in the first book, a few things were predictable but for the most part I never quite knew where Grant was going or what would happen next. As the revelations about the tapeworms and the infected come out, Grant gives us mini treatises on the nature of consciousness, souls, memory, gender, and identity. She also explores the notion of family, a recurring theme throughout all of her books, regardless of subject or genre. She uses Sal, Sal's boyfriend Nathan, his mother Dr. Cale, as well as another doctor, Dr. Banks, and several of Dr. Cale's other children to explore these questions. The book isn't all seriousness, there's humor and even romance, but this is not the book for when you want a light, easy read or a quick read. There are no easy answers in Symbiont. The humans in America are at war with the infected and both sides play dirty. There doesn't seem to be a solution that allows for a peaceful co-existence. Who will win? Who should win? Which side do you root for? Sal is particularly conflicted as she belongs to both sides. While there's a fair amount of action, Sal gets taken prisoner at least three times by my count, much of the book is a mix of emotional and cerebral. Sometimes that meant the pace suffered and I would wish for something to happen. Grant makes you think and makes you feel. Once again, Nathan is too good and too understanding to the point of not feeling real. But every other character is fully formed and developed. Fishy, a new character, is both charming and scary. I liked him but didn't completely trust him."Symbiont" blends science, horror, romance, and family dysfunction with philosophy and mythical hero's quest into a story that grabs you, that pokes at your comfort levels, and keeps you reading to what will happen, what might happen, and what will the new world look like. It's a hell of a ride so hold on and don't let go!

Set in ancient Palestine during the dangerous Roman occupation and Jewish rebellion, That Boy from Nazareth weaves a suspenseful coming-of-age adventure in which God reveals to a young Jesus his true identity as the Son of God. Powerful opposing forces pursue him using any means necessary to find the boy and either kill him or use him for their own nefarious purposes. Rich with captivating detail, this compelling, fast-paced adventure, told through the characters who later define Jesus’ life in the Gospels, is filled with suspense, humor, and intriguing dialogue that lend a new and real sense of humanity to the story of how a twelve-year-old boy from a humble family in a Galilean town was given the power to change the world.

Review That Boy from Nazareth is profound, vivid, and highly recommended . . . --Midwest Book Review

About the Author Joel Gordonson, before becoming a novelist, has enjoyed a career as an international attorney. He holds law degrees in the United States and from the University of Cambridge. Gordonson’s family tree includes a long line of ministers, including a great-grandfather who emigrated from Europe in 1860 to become a missionary on the American western frontier. It is this lineage that influenced the subject of his first novel, That Boy from Nazareth.

Since little is known about this period, the author is free to speculate about the thoughts and activities of Jesus and his many friends. Once can sense the poverty and despair of the people and their deep longing for a Messiah who, they hope, will solve all their problems.A rather light-hearted moment occurs when Jesus is caught in some mischief with his friends and has to sit before his mother Mary and hear her recite the entire family genealogy. His mind wanders but he knows the recitation as well as his mother. The transition from boy/man to Son of God is made very cleverly. Certainly, that transition is hard for many of us to contemplate and we have all struggled with its meaning. Gordonson's attempt to make Jesus personal and real to us is a major theme of the book.To me, the last few pages of the book contained the entire message and I teared-up when I read it. The "message" has been there all along, we just need to be reminded of it frequently, and Joel has done a great job in doing that.

It tells the story of Jesus as a young boy of age 12 or 13, growing up in Nazareth, and culminates in the incident known as “The Finding In the Temple”, recounted in Luke’s Gospel. The author cleverly introduces the Apostles as boyhood friends of Jesus growing up in Nazareth, and retrojects many of the characters from the Gospel accounts back in time, suggesting plausible “back stories”.I think it was very clever to choose the Finding in the Temple as the fulcrum of the story – it is a mysterious event, the one glimpse we are given of Jesus between his infancy and the start of his ministry as a grown man. And it is just a glimpse – of Jesus in the Temple, astonishing the teachers and the scribes with his questions. When his parents find him, he says: “Did you not know I must be about my Father’s business?” And then he went back to Nazareth and, Luke says, “increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.”The atmospherics of the book are engrossing and believable – the mix of cultures, the Romans, the Jews, the market places, the dust and the heat, the politics, are vividly made present. And the lead up to the Finding event is an enjoyable story, engrossing and believable. Not full of “magic” or “miracles”, but human events and character revealing incidents.Everyone might tell the story differently. Anne Rice in her book “Christ the Lord” starts off with a seven year old Jesus killing somebody with a curse, and then bringing him back to life. Rice also alludes to his bringing clay pigeons to life, an episode in one of the Gnostic Gospels which, interestingly enough, also appears in the Koran! There is a vulgar hunger for miracles that such stories feed, more like magic shows than the faith building confirmation of teaching that we find in the Gospels. Rather than Peter’s “Lord, leave me, I am a sinful man!”, the reaction to such miracles is “Oh wow, do another one!”But in That Boy, miracles aren’t the main point, which is quite refreshing. In fact, one “miracle” is clearly just a fraudulent claim by a man pretending to be blind that he has regained his site. No, That Boy is more about the human relationships between Jesus, His Mother, Peter, Magdalen, Judas, Joseph… and about the backstory of Herod and Pontius Pilate and the politics of the day. And, ultimately, about the the process by which Jesus discovers his own identity as God’s Son.This is a mystery indeed, and a “hot topic” in contemporary theology, the consciousness of Christ. Did Jesus know He was God? My own feeling about this question is that it is wrongly phrased, leading inevitably to unresolvable paradoxes. A better question: Did Jesus know that God was His Father? And the answer to this question is clear on every page of the Gospels – it was the absolute core of His identity.Given a basic belief in the Gospel – which I have – Joel Gordonson’s particular thought experiment is not implausible, and seems essentially orthodox, to me. I kept expecting stumbling to my enjoyment to arise - the mysteries he is dealing with are sacred mysteries, easy to diminish by attempting to “explain”. Over-interpretation can replace the spirit of the Gospel with the ego of the interpreter. But I did not find this to be the case in That Boy From Nazareth, to the credit of the author.I have one or two minor quibbles which I might bring up if I was the editor. But I wouldn’t want my ego to intrude on the author’s artistic choices either! Finally, not only should the book “work” for both Christians and non-Christians, but perhaps more surprising – I think it should work for both Catholics and evangelicals. Now that’s an achievement!

By Mary Zimmermann I found this new work of historical fiction to be both fascinating and thought-provoking. The story begins during the childhood of Jesus of Nazareth. That biblical storyline is set against the Roman occupation of Palestine, at a time when Pilate is assuming power in the region and anxious to exert his authority and control of the rebellious Jews. The premise of the book asks the reader to explore how a young boy comes to understand that he is both true man as well as true God. How did he first discover his divine power? How did he live a normal childhood and never sin? Were the "Apostles" really randomly selected or were they friends who had grown up with him? Through a great story of suspense and adventure, the author crafts his version of how God revealed himself to his Son, and readers see Jesus as a very believable character. I ordered this book for my middle-school-age grandson, who knows his Bible stories and enjoys reading books with historical accuracy. The book is well-written and well-researched adding stories about Roman oppression in the Jewish daily life, explaining the dress of the Pharisees or detailing the Jewish temple ceremonies. I learned so much. Of course the author has taken some liberties in this work of fiction. Some of the miracles presented may not be what I remembered, yet other times the dialogue used direct quotes from the Bible as part of the storyline and it was a perfect time for me to go back and research or ask why the author presented the story that way. This really is a great action-packed, compelling story, that will keep you riveted, as you ponder how a twelve-year-old boy comprehends that He has the power to change the world.

This story was so wonderful, however, I totally could relate to it because a good portion of it happened right where I grew up, and involved characters that my mother knew and I had heard about.
