Their futures look different but guaranteed…until they’re faced with a perilous opportunity to leave a mark on history.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. and love. Man topics if I say so myself By Tom Fisher Often Women’s Fiction is where one finds Kay Bratt’s books. Spoiler Alert-“The Palest Ink” is not just for women.“The Palest Ink” describes how two boys become men while in the midst of China’s Cultural Revolution. Hard decisions had to be made during these tumultuous times. Do they follow their consciences and values while China is evolving right before their eyes? What are the consequences of following the masses? Would they change their sense of right and wrong while those around them struggled to come up with their own answers? Kay Bratt supplies the answers and more! The Palest Ink is a Man’s Book. Benfu and Pony Boy are challenged to become men while still in their teens. It portrays chivalry, responsibility, friendship, and love. Man topics if I say so myself. “The Palest Ink” is a book I just couldn’t put down. The story was riveting and consuming. The characters came to life in such a way that I vicariously lived their lives with them.Kay Bratt writes like she knows China and she does know China. I’ve read 10 of her books and I’ve loved them all. I’ve enjoyed her writings like I’ve enjoyed the writings of Ji-li Jiang (The Red Scarf Girl) and Xinran (The Good Women of China). She shares their passion for China and it’s displayed in her stories.“The Palest Ink” is a book that’s categorized Women’s Fiction, but it should be Men’s Fiction also. It’s a fabulous book and lays a firm foundation for Kay Bratt’s Scavenger’s Daughters series.I was given an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a fair review.

By TicToc Posted first to Blog Critics as Book Review: 'The Palest Ink,' A Historical Fiction by Kay Bratt.Times of turmoil often breed courage and valor. In The Palest Ink by Kay Bratt, we are trust into a story of a Cultural Revolution supported by Chairman Mao. As his Red Guard begins a deadly assault on their people leaving many innocent victims in their wake, there are those who believe they can create their own mark on history through the opportunity of rebellion. Benfu is a young man, worried more about his career as a violinist and an arranged marriage that he wants no part of, then the possibility of revolution. His family are intellectuals and teach in Shanghai. They know of the histories and the possibilities of the coming surge and how they must now begin to hide valuables and change in order to stay under the radar of those hunting for possible rebellion. They also understand how often the innocent can be targeted, and history supports the dangers inherent in the coming wave of assault. Pony Boy, a member of the lower class, is Benfu’s best friend. Their futures are very different and they look at life in different ways. Together in the struggle of Political turmoil, they must both make decisions that can affect both themselves and their family. Thrown together in the chaos of revolution, they begin their own mission and rebellion against the red tide of Mao’s Red Guard. Can they find a way to make their mark on history? Life moves quickly for both, and the tide turns ever sharply for their own families. Will they continue on their quest, or is all lost for themselves and their families. Bratt has given us characters that begin in loving homes, Benfu, ready for university, and in the tradition of the country soon to be affianced. His best friend has a harder life and yet in both cases their innocence shines through. As the darkening of revolution begins it changes them and they both have to find a way to grow and live in the chaos created in the wave of danger and deaths. Bratt has given us a time of turmoil and has allowed us to watch the growth of these two youths into entirely different people then where they started. The Revolution itself is well documented and the historical significance of Chairman Mao’s Red Guard leave fear in its wake. The danger and fear that come through the writing create discomfort and unrest, much as it must have been during the times. The addition of the danger is palpable, and adds to the chaotic feelings left after the reading of this work. If you enjoy history, revolution, courage, romance and family, then this will make a great work for your library. Kay Bratt has given us a work of intensity. This would be a great work for a reading group with an amazing array of information for discussion.

I didn't know Benfu.I got to meet him in The Palest Ink, penned by Kay Bratt.Am I glad I did.I've never been to China. Kay's words transported me there. Benfu and Pony Boy weren't just people, they became friends, ones that I'll think and care about and remember for a long time. I lived the book. I was there: watching them growing up in a tumultuous time in China's history. I agonized over the decisions they had to make that impacted their lives, the lives of their families, the lives of their countrymen.I love books that are unputdownable. The Palest Ink is one of them. When I find a book that lingers after reading, it's a very good day. Will be reading this again.I was given an advanced copy in exchange for a fair review.

This book is an important work in Holocaust literature and was originally published in Poland in 1967. Covering the years 1939-1945, it is the author's account of her experience growing up in the Warsaw ghetto and her eventual deportation to, imprisonment in, and survival of the Majdanek, Auschwitz, Ravensbruck, and Neustadt-Glewe camps. Since the old, the weak, and children were summarily executed by the Nazis in these camps, Mrs Birenbaum's survival and coming of age is all the more remarkable. Her story is told with simplicity and clarity and the new edition contains revisions made by the author to the original English translation, and is expanded with a new epilogue and postscripts that bring the story up to date and complete the circle of Mrs Birenbaum's experiences.

I bought my copy at Auschwitz and every detail from the book is superimposed with the memory of the camp as it is today. The imagery the author uses is mesmerizing. This is a truly moving story full of hardship and courage. Even through all of the trials and tribulations of life in the camp of death, the author shows us the beauty of companionship and hope. I wondered at this book. How one individual could servive those around her dying and still have the desire to live. It is through the hope and courage that she can live and it is through this book that the problems of my life seem so insignificant.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Remarkable book, remarkable woman By Joan Martorelli I have read many books and seen many movies about the Holocaust; have visited Auswchwitz and Dachau, but I have never felt the horror of the camps as I did while reading this book. The reader is there with Ms. Birenbaum, feeling the cold, the hunger, the constant terror and rage. It is unimaginable that this woman survived 6 years of inhuman treatment--but she did.Because Ms. Birenbaum describes her own experiences as a Polish Jew coming of age during the Third Reich, she has much to teach us. The author expresses her emotions so simply and beautifully that the reader feels joy at her triumphs and while crying at her losses, emotional pain and humiliation. This remarkable woman, who was a child (between 9 and 15 years of age during the war), was wise, strong, resourceful and brave beyond all expectations. She watched almost all those she loved disappear. While standing in line at a "selection" at the Majdanek Camp, she turned around to talk to her beloved mother who had for years emotionally sheltered her young daughter from the inevitable (a la "Life is Beautiful"), and found her gone. She never saw her again, never said good-bye. In the camps she created new families for herself, only to loose these people, as well. Most touching was Ms. Birenbaum's first experience of falling in love and the loss of that man. And through all this, she was never able to mourn. Emotions had to be pushed deep inside because the focus had to be on survival. On several occasions, the author expressed her need for dignity and self-respect by standing up to her captors and, unbelieveably, was not shot for her defiance. She describes her indifference to the pain of others as a way of coping with the near certainty that she would loose them, while also expressing her longing to be touched and held and by someone. After reading this book, I think about all the little annoyances of daily living, and how meaningless they are. I wonder how many of us, in our pre-teens, could have dealt with the protracted horror of the ghetto and camps as Ms. Birenbaum did. How many of us would have had the will and fortitude to live through the experiences described in this book? Ms. Birenbaum, you were a remarkable child and are a courageous woman!

After having the honor of actually meeting the author and hearing her story told first-hand (twice), I felt like I had to get her book. I did, and it changed me. Reading it was an experience which was almost too difficult for me and yet, I didn't want it to end. It is written like a story -you go through everything she goes through, you sort of relive it with her. That is why, when you finish the book, you feel like she is your best friend. I wish she was.

From dusty bazaars stacked with intricate carpets to lush green forests along the Caspian Sea; from rosewater distilleries to centuries-old mosques; it takes time to truly understand Iran, its diverse people and its complex history. But, no matter where you go, there’s always spectacular food. As a second-generation Iranian-American, author Tina Rezvani grew up eating between two cultures, savoring equally the saffron-tinted basmati rice of her heritage and the burritos and pizzas of the land she calls home. Everyday Persian aims not only to teach the reader how to prepare classic Persian dishes, but it also contains modern Persian-American recipes combining culinary traditions. Across more than 120 recipes, this informative and accessible book will give readers a basic knowledge of the fundamentals of Persian cooking, from aash (bean and herb soup) to zereshk polow (rice with barberries).

New paperback edition! The cuisine of Estonia, the northernmost of the Baltic nations, is little known outside the country s borders. Simple and satisfying, the cuisine is based on such staples as potatoes, pork, preserved fish, and dark bread. Sauces are made from milk, sour cream, or cottage cheese and the main flavorings are salt and pepper, onions, and fresh herbs. Estonians still observe the old culinary traditions. Christmas Eve (Jõululaupäev) is still celebrated with roast pork (seapraad), blood sausage (verivorstid), sweetbreads (magussaiad), and gingersnap cookies (piparkoogid). Visitors are welcomed with a coffee table (kohvilaud) of open face sandwiches (võileivad), filled turnovers (pirukad), and sweets such as cheese Danish (mulgikorp) and cakes (koogid). This comprehensive book contains more than 150 traditional and modern recipes, all designed for the modern kitchen with readily available ingredients. Additionally, extensive historical and cultural information and an Estonian-English/English-Estonian glossary of culinary terms are included.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Fresh and Informative! By Thinking Person This is a great introduction to not only Estonian cuisine, but also its culture. Ms Kärner has wisely included a bit of Estonian history and cultural traditions along with her extensive recipes. What I most like are her introductions with each recipe explaining the whys and wherefors of it. The recipes are a mix of traditional and contemporary Estonian dishes, using ingredients that are readily found at the market (even saffron and cardamom, which one used to have to diligently hunt for). All the favorites of mine that I grew up eating are there along with new ones that I would love to try. This is also great for you Estos out there who have no one to show you how to make our most traditional and beloved dishes and long for a taste of home. This is the recipe book for you--and for anyone out there who would love to learn about an up-to-now little known country, its culture and its cuisine. "Head isu!" (Bon appetit!)P.S. For those wanting to learn much more about Estonia, check out the DVD "The Singing Revolution", also found on Amazon.

I disagree with the reviewer who found the recipes americanized: they are as close as you can get. I lived in Estonia for several years and live with an Estonian now, and the results seem great to both of us! A good buy if you like this kind of food (not for everyone!).

“If you like dogs, you’ll love Laurien Berenson’s Melanie Travis mysteries!” —Joanne Fluke, New York Times bestselling authorEver wonder what Melanie and Aunt Peg were up to before solving murders? Let’s step back in time, when college-aged Melanie and her indomitable Aunt Peg were little more than strangers…   It’s Christmas in Connecticut, and Peg Turnbull can’t wait to spend her favorite holiday cozying up to husband Max and their clan of pedigree Poodles in Greenwich. But Peg’s spirits drop when the family of Max’s estranged brother Michael invites the pair over for Christmas dinner. Could her in-laws want to settle the long-standing feud over Nana’s will? Peg isn’t expecting any miracles, but it’s been ages since Peg last saw her niece and nephew. Little Melanie must be out of pigtails by now…   When they arrive at the Turnbull’s, Peg is not just surprised by how much Melanie has grown up. The family has spared no expense in preparing for the festivities—unusual, considering Michael blew his inheritance after years of financial troubles. Peg suspects there’s an awful secret tucked beneath her brother-in-law’s ostentatious good cheer, and she’s determined to get to the bottom of it. Once she does, someone’s ending up in the doghouse…

Short story By Kindle Customer I love this series, have read them all, so I was happy to find this prequel...however...it ended so abruptly, at least on my kindle....at 80% it just stopped! There was really no mystery to speak of...I am feeling a bit confused, but I guess this is just a little back story. It was nice to read about Peg & Her husband while he was still alive, since the series begins after he has a;ready passed.I do recommended the entire series, & am looking forward to the new installment coming out later this year.

Not as good as what I expected but filled in info By S M W The story was ok as far as providing backgound information fill in on Aunt Peg, but the end kinda sucked because it was not anything like her other books. I expected some kind of building and climactical plot twist leading to a trumphant victory instead it was kind of an, oh well...it is what it is...haha... So this one left me less than impressed as a whole but it was good to have some background on the family dynamics of Peg, young Melanie, Bob, and Frank.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great back story By Amazon Customer I have loved Laurien Berenson's Melanie Travis canine mysteries for years, and Aunt Peg is a favorite character. This novella is a prequel to the series, probably 15 years before Melanie's adventures begin. It examines the painful family dynamics at Christmas, a year after Max's mother passed away. It has some warm moments and some Poodle moments, but it really showcases Peg's natural nosiness and determination to learn the truth no matter what. It was a quick enjoyable read that will be popular with fans of the series. It's hard not to love Aunt Peg!

I recommend this book highly to both guys and gals By Cathy Garwood I recommend this book highly to both guys and gals!As a Catholic wife and mother, I was looking for a book that I could get my "regular guys"(college son and non Catholic husband) to read in order to help develop their faith. This concise, practical information highlighted essential aspects of faithdevelopment and the bits of humor made it an enjoyable read.Brief summary notes at the end of each chapter and use of scripture referencesthroughout is a great way to help focus the reader and have them reaching for theirBible.I believe this book would be an excellent supplement to be used in faith formation classeswith high school youth.Kudos to you Fred for writing down on paper what was in your heart !!

By Patrice Dubois Fred, in his book "How to Be a Better Catholic", captures in simple terms the major hypocrisy of our times. We all say that we want to become a better version of ourselves and yet fail over and over to deliver it. Fred, through personal examples and sharing about his own journey of faith, reflects on it and recommends to all of us, regular guys, a tested and proven path to becoming a better Catholic and thus a better person overall.

I found the book to be easy to read and had many ideas to implement immediately By Aaron Roy I found the book to be easy to read and had many ideas to implement immediately. I read it on Sunday morning and was able to write goals and start working towards being a better Christian by Sunday afternoon, I also want to add it teaches to be a better person overall, so even if you are not a Catholic it still applies to "life" in general.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent By Joan Stabe I love having an Easter children's book that incorporates the truth of Easter. It encourages the opportunity for good discussion between parent and child as well as providing a cute story.

While waiting in line, I had the opportunity to read this book to a 4 yr old fellow, showing pictures. He love it also! His mom promised him she would look for the book on Amazon! Great presentation for children and perhaps an opportunity for parents to have a more open mind about Easter Eggs, baskets, and celebrations while presenting a reminder that our Saviour died for all of us that day! Well worth the purchase and any chance to read it to a child....or to consider how well this is presented to our own set minds...of any age! :) Love it! Encourage this author to write more!
