Church-related colleges flourished in mid-20th century America. But the 1960s witnessed dramatic changes as campus after campus succumbed to the rising tide of secularism in both intellectual worldview and student behavior. L. John Van Til’s "The Soul of Grove City College" tells the powerful story of perhaps the only college which recovered its spiritual roots as the 1970s unfolded. An enlightening read of Grove City College’s founders’ original vision, its decline and its rebirth. --W. Andrew Hoffecker Emeritus Professor of Church History Reformed Theological Seminary

A Christian College Reclaimed By Frank Reeder As someone who attended this college just as it was about to undergo a seismic shift back to its roots, I found this a fascinating account of what is needed to weather the storm of transformation. I knew some of the significant figures either personally or from a distance. The author, Dr. VanTil, led from within the institution. For those who are leading institutional change and growth, this book will give you insight as to what is needed to bring it about. The school had drifted both theologically and socially so that it was a shell of its former self. The roots of the college are important to understand in this process. It is nearly impossible to take an evolving institution and then take it to a different root system. Grove City College was founded upon the historical Biblical confessionalism of Reformed Theology. And it is to that place that the school was returned. This is unusual in that many institutions and the people who are in leadership are unwilling to pay the price to see them thrive in the purpose for which they were brought into being. Once that purpose is lost, the halls of the institution ring hollow with selfish pursuit. Grove City College now stands as a model for Christian faith and freedom in a spiritually ravaged national landscape.

An insider’s view By chcjrbone This book was fascinating for me since I was a student at Grove City College during the transition discussed in the book from the Dr. Kring faction to the Dr. Van Til faction in the mid 1970’s. What I didn’t know about until I read the book was the tension that existed between these two camps. I agree with Van Til that GCC has since moved to the confessional theology camp.I’m giving the book four stars instead of five only because there are numerous minor editing errors, which I brought to Dr. Van Til’s attention, by the way. For the second edition the publisher should employ a qualified proofreader.

By "Tex" Most informative book on the founding of Grove City College including backgrounds of the Ketler and Pew Families. This publication answered all my questions concerning the redirection and corrections of this institution during the later 1950s to the present day. Once I started to read this book I couldn't put it done until I finished it..
