Anne Stoltzfus shot to her feet when she spotted the intruder working his way under the fence beyond her red barn. She stepped closer to the kitchen window. He was almost through."What's wrong?" Roxann Shield remained seated at Anne's kitchen table, her eyes wide with concern."It's Joseph Lapp's old goat. He's getting into my garden. I'm not going to lose the last of my precious tomatoes or another prized pumpkin to that thief."Anne dashed out into the cool morning. Flying down the steps, she raced toward the rickety fence separating her garden plots from her cantankerous neighbor's farm, yelling as she ran. "Out! Get out of there!"Her nemesis was halfway under the fence when she reached him. Armed with only a kitchen towel, she flew into battle, flapping her weapon in the black-and-brown billy goat's face. The culprit tried to retreat, but his curved horns snagged in the sagging wire. The more he struggled to escape her attack, the more tangled he became. He bleated his misery as loud as he could.Anne stopped flapping when she recognized his dilemma. He couldn't go forward and he couldn't go back. She rested her hands on her hips as she scowled at him. She heard laughter behind her. Looking over her shoulder, she saw Roxann doubled over with mirth on her front steps.Anne turned her attention back to the goat. "I should leave you here. It would serve you right to spend the night with your head stuck in the fence."Feeling sorry for the goat was the last thing she wanted to do, but he did appear miserable sprawled on his belly with his head cocked at an awkward angle. His eyes were wide with fear and his mouth hung open. She looked about for his owner, but Joseph Lapp was nowhere to be seen. Of course he wasn't. Trust her neighbor to be absent when his animal was misbehaving. That was usually the case. How many times had his goats managed to get in her garden and eat her crops? More than she cared to count. More than she could afford to lose. Each time she drove them out, she bit her tongue to keep from telling Joseph Lapp exactly what she thought of his smelly horde. Her Amish faith required that she forgive grievances, but enough was enough. If the man didn't repair his fences soon, she was going to have a word with Bishop Andy about Joseph's poor stewardship. She didn't want to cause trouble, but she was tired of being on the losing end of the situation. However satisfying a conversation with the bishop might be, it didn't solve her current problem. The goat continued bleating pitifully. A number of other goats looked over their pens to see what was going on. Anne waited for Joseph to appear, but he didn't. She studied the billy goat for a long moment."If you are to be free, I reckon I'll have to do it. Remember this kindness and stay out of my garden.""Be careful," Roxann called out.Crouching in front of the goat, Anne put her hand on his head and pushed down so she could untangle his horns. She wrinkled her nose at his stench. Why did he smell so bad? If she had a garden hose handy, she would bathe him before she let him up. Maybe that would deter him from visiting next time. He struggled harder but she was only able to unhook one horn. "Hold still, you wicked animal."Suddenly, the goat surged forward. His second horn popped free and he made a break for it, barreling into Anne. The impact toppled her backward into her precious tomato plants. Although it was mid-October, the vines still bore huge red fruit, the very last of the summer's bounty and a sure cash crop at her produce stand. She sat in openmouthed shock as the feeling of squished tomatoes beneath her soaked through her dress. So much for a goat's gratitude. She shook her fist at him. "You miserable, ungrateful beast!""Do you need a hand?"The mildly amused voice came from the far side of the fence. Joseph Lapp stood with his arms crossed on his chest and one hand cupped over his mouth. He was a tall, brawny man with wide shoulders and muscular arms. A straw hat pulled low on his brow covered his light blond hair. The wide brim cast a shadow across his gray eyes, but she knew he was laughing at her. Again. They rarely shared a conversation, but he was always finding some amusement at her expense. Did he enjoy seeing her suffer? She scrambled to her feet. "I don't need a hand. I need you to keep your goats out of my garden. Unless you keep them in, I'm going to complain to the bishop."Joseph walked to the gate between their properties a few yards away and opened it. "Do what you must. Chester, koom"The billy goat snatched a mouthful of pumpkin leaves and trotted toward the gate. He walked placidly through the opening, but Anne saw the gleam in his beady black eyes when he looked over his shoulder at her. He would be back. Well, she wouldn't be so kind to him next time. It wouldn't be a kitchen towel. She'd find a stout stick.Joseph closed and latched the gate. "I will pay for the tomatoes. Just throw the ruined ones over the fence."She brushed off her stained maroon dress and glared at him. "I'm not going to reward that mangy animal with my fresh tomatoes, even if they are ruined. He'll only come back wanting more.""Suit yourself. If I can't have them, I won't pay for them.""Are you serious?" Her mouth dropped open in shock. She took a step toward him and planted her bare foot in another tomato. The pulp oozed between her toes."You sat on them. Chester didn't." Joseph turned to walk away.Furious, Anne plucked the closest whole tomato and threw it with all her might. It hit Joseph squarely between the shoulder blades, splattering in a bright red blob where his suspenders crossed his white shirt.Horrified, she pressed her hands to her mouth. She had actually hit the man.Joseph flexed his shoulders. Bits of broken tomato dropped to the ground. Chester jumped on the treats and gobbled them up. Joseph turned to glare at Anne. She didn't wait to hear what he had to say. She fled to the house as fast as her shaky legs could carry her. She dashed past Roxann and stopped in the center of her kitchen with her hands pressed to her cheeks."What a great throw." Roxann came in, still chuckling. "Did you see the look on his face?""In all the years I played baseball as a kinner, no one wanted me on their team. I couldn't hit the broad side of the barn when I threw a ball. But today I struck my neighbor.""You didn't hurt him with a tomato.""You don't understand." How could she? Roxann was Englisch. She didn't have to live by the strict rules of Anne's Amish faith.Roxann stopped giggling. "Will you get into trouble for it? I know the Amish practice nonviolence, but you weren't trying to hurt him.""I struck him in anger. That is not permitted. Ever. If Joseph goes to the bishop or to the church elders, it will be cause for a scandal. I'm so ashamed."Roxann slipped her arm over Anne's shoulder. "I'm sure Mr. Lapp will forgive you. You are only human. Put it out of your mind and let's finish these reports. You and the other Amish midwives are doing a wonderful job. Your statistics will help me show the administration at my hospital that our outreach education program is paying off. Our funding is running out soon. If we're going to continue educating midwives and the public, we have to prove the benefits outweigh the cost."Roxann, a nurse-midwife and educator, was determined to improve relations between the medical community and the Amish midwives, who were considered by some doctors to be unskilled and untrained. It was far from the truth.Anne allowed her mentor and friend to lead her back to the table and resume the review of Anne's cases for the year. Glancing out the kitchen window, Anne looked for Joseph, but he wasn't in sight. She nibbled on her bottom lip. Was he going to make trouble for her?A full harvest moon, a bright orange ball the color of Anne's pumpkins, was creeping over the hills to the east. The sight made Joseph smile as he closed the barn door after finishing his evening milking. It had been two days since the tomato incident, but he still found himself chuckling at the look on Anne's face when she'd realized what she'd done. From shock to horror to mortification, her expressive features had displayed it all. She might be an annoying little woman, but she did provide him with some entertainment. Especially where his goats were concerned. Her plump cheeks would flush bright red and her green-gray eyes would flash with green fire when she chased his animals. She was no match against their nimbleness, but that didn't keep her from trying.Goats enjoyed getting out of their pens. Some of them were masters of the skill. Was it his fault that the best forage around was in her garden plot?It wasn't his intention to make life harder for the woman. He planned to mend his fence, but there simply weren't enough hours in the day. Now that the harvest was done, his corn cribs were full and his hay was safe in the barn, he would find time to make the needed repairs. Tomorrow for sure.He was halfway to the house when the lights of a car swung off the road and into his lane. He stopped in midstride. Who could that be? He wasn't expecting anyone. Certainly not one of the Englisch. Most likely, it was someone who had taken a wrong turn on the winding rural Pennsylvania road looking for his neighbor's place. It happened often enough to be irritating. His farm was remote and few cars traveled this way until Anne Stoltzfus had opened her produce stand. Now, with her large hand-painted sign out by the main highway and an arrow pointing this direction, he sometimes saw a line of cars on the road heading to buy her fresh-picked corn, squash and now pumpkins. Since the beginning of October, it seemed every Englisch in the countssy wanted to buy pumpkins from her. He would be glad when she closed for the winter. He didn't resent that Anne earned a living working the soil in addition to being a midwife. He respected her for that. He just didn't like people. Some folks called him a recluse. It didn't matter what they called him as long as they left him alone. He cherished the peace and quiet of his small farm with only his animals for company, but that peace was broken now by the crunching of car tires rolling over his gravel drive. From the barn behind him, he heard several of his goats bleating in curiosity.Whoever these people were, they should know better than to come shopping at an Amish farm after dark. Anne's stand would be closed until morning. The car rolled to a stop a few feet from him. He raised his hand to block the glare of the headlights. He heard the car door open, but he couldn't see anything. "Hello, brooder!'His heart soared with joy at the sound of that familiar and beloved voice. "Fannie?" "Ja."His little sister had come home at last. He had prayed for this day for three long years. Prayed every night before he laid his tired body down. She was never far from his thoughts. Still blinded by the lights, he took a step forward. He wanted to hug her, to make sure she was real and not some dream. "I can't believe it's you. Gott be praised.""It's me, right enough, Joe. Johnny, turn off the lights."Something in the tone of her voice made Joseph stop. Johnny, whoever he was, did as she asked. Joseph blinked in the sudden darkness. He wanted so badly to hear her say she was home for good. "I knew you would come back. I knew when your rumspringa ended, you would give up the Englisch life and return. Your heart is Amish. You don't belong in the outside world. You belong here.""I haven't come back to stay, Joe." The regret in her voice cut his joy to shreds. He heard a baby start to cry. After few seconds, his eyes adjusted and he could make out Fannie standing beside the open door of the vehicle. The light from inside the car didn't reveal his Amish sister. Instead, he saw an Englisch girl with short spiky hair, wearing a tight T-shirt and a short denim skirt. He might have passed her on the street without recognizing her, so different did she look. No Amish woman would be seen in such immodest clothes. It was then he realized she held a baby in her arms. What was going on?He had raised Fannie alone after their parents and his fiancée were killed in a buggy and pickup crash. He'd taken care of her from the time she was six years old until she disappeared a week after she turned sixteen, leaving only a note to say she wanted an Englisch life. For months afterward, he'd waited for her to return and wondered what he had done wrong. How had he failed her so badly? It had to be his fault. It was hard to speak for the tightness that formed in his throat. "If you aren't staying, then why are you here?"The driver, a young man with black hair and a shiny ring in the side of his nose, leaned toward the open passenger-side door. "Come on, Fannie, we don't have all night. Get this over with.""Shut up, Johnny. You aren't helping." She took a few steps closer to Joseph. "I need your help, brooder. There's no one else I can turn to."Were those tears on her face? "What help can I give you? I don't have money.""I don't want your money. I… T want you to meet someone. This is my daughter. Your niece. Her name is Leah. I named her after our mother.""You have a bubbel?" Joseph reeled in shock. He still thought of his sister as a little girl skipping off to school or playing on their backyard swing, not someone old enough to be a mother. He gestured toward the car with a jerk of his head. "Is this man your husband?""We're not married yet, but we will be soon," she said in a rush."Soon?" Had she come to invite him to the wedding?"Ja. As soon as Johnny gets this great job he has waiting for him in New York. He's a musician and I'm a singer. He has an audition with a big-time group. It could be our lucky break. Just what I need to get my career going."

So even though Joseph is a bit of a recluse and socially challenged he won my heart because of the goats. How can you not love a hero who takes the time to name an entire herd of goats? And the animals clearly adore him. Anne, not so much. At first. Though they put their differences aside when Joseph becomes sole caregiver of his infant niece. Loved Anne's independent spirit -- capable midwife with a garden produce business on the side. She's constantly surprising Joseph and it isn't long before he's smitten. Their love story isn't without complications though. Heartache and laughter blend together to make this an endearing Amish romance. *This is the third book in a multi-authored series -- Lancaster Courtships. It reads beautifully as a standalone though we do get glimpses of characters from the previous two books which I really enjoyed.

By Tina Watson Patricia Davids did excellent research for her book, "The Amish Midwife", the third and final book in the series of Lancaster Courtships. I have to say that "The Amish Midwife" has to be my favorite out of all three books in the series.Single, Amish midwife Anne Stoltzfus has lived three years in the small village of Honeysuckle. She lives next door to Joseph Lapp, who's goats can't seem to stay in their fence, but instead love to eat Anne's garden. Anne grows her garden to make extra money besides being a midwife in her area of Lancaster County.Bachelor Amish Goat Farmer Joseph Lapp loves being with his goats more than being around his church community members. But he is their for church members when there is a need and his lending hands are needed. Joseph has had his share of hard life at an early age, he became responsible for his sister, Fannie, when she was six years old, their parents lives were taken during a tragic accident along with his girlfriend.Fannie Lapp has been out among the Englische for about three years now, writing to Joseph here and there. Sudden she returns to Honeysuckle needing his help, but not telling him the whole truth. Will Joseph help his sister? Can Anne learn to love goats?Does the church help Joseph or will they turn their backs again? Can wounds finally heal? Will Fannie turn her life around? What an exciting, interesting, and a different spin on Amish romance that Patricia Davids has written for us, readers. I felt like I was on the edge of my seat the whole time as I was reading "The Amish Midwife". Patricia Davids has added enough detail to make her book come together and flow fluently; that you are not missing anything as you read "The Amish Midwife. And you learn something too or at least I did. I look forward to reading more book by Patricia Davids in the future. All three authors did an excellent job of making sure each other had the information of the characters used and details used in the series, that nothing would be off in their books individually.I received a free copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review. No money was exchanged. This is my honest review in my own words.

So when the neighbor's goat get's into her garden, she is mre than a bit upset.Joseph Lapp knows very little about babies, but he agrees nonetheless to take in his baby niece, Lucy. But running the goat farm and raising his young niece is taking it's toll and he needs help, so he asks his neighbor, Anne for help. Will Anne and Joseph be a good team or will his rogue goats strain their friendship?I loved this story and how Anne and Joseph work together despite their differences and Joseph's mischievous goats. Anne is hesitant to help Joseph because she is afraid that she will become too attached to Leah. But she wants to help.Joseph is hardworking and really likes his job and raising goats, he know them all by name. He appreciates Anne, and all that she is doing to help him, as well as her compassion and caring for her patients.Overall, this is an enjoyable read, full of faith, and humor along the way. I really liked the dialog and thought that it fit perfectly with the characters and situation. Sweet and funny at times this is a great read for fans of Amish fiction and romance.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Spring, 1868Keeping her promise would wear Daisy Trumbo out before this was all over with, but keep it she would. With long strides she hurried down the planked sidewalk that led from the mercantile, where she'd been stocking up on supplies. According to a handful of outraged citizens, her seven-year-old daughter was over at the bank holding men hostage with a gun.Daisy had agreed to consider every man her child chose to interview in the quest to gain a new father, but holding them prisoner until each passed or failed inspection was simply taking her newfound mission too far.Where in this wild stretch of Texas had Ollie gotten her hands on a gun?Daisy broke into a run, the hem of her skirt threatening to tangle with her long legs. If she managed to trip she'd leave these widow's weeds in the dust so fast she'd show up in nothing but her bloomers. That would give her neighbors something to talk about. She reached her destination without mishap. From the number of horses hitched outside the establishment, the banker had an unusual amount of customers this morning. Saturday often brought cowhands into town to collect their pay and waste it in the saloons. She'd been so busy at the mercantile she hadn't noticed if the overland stage had already arrived and brought in more visitors to High Plains. Just how many hostages were involved? she wondered."Protect my child from herself, Lord," Daisy whispered as she forced down panic. No need to burst through the door and startle anyone. That might get someone hurt. Instead, Daisy dusted her skirt, adjusted her bonnet and squarely braced her shoulders for the trouble ahead. Her fingers shook as she reached for the doorknob. She was tall enough to see above the curtains that covered the door and front windows. From the sight of raised palms, her daughter still had the weapon aimed at somebody. Please make these men the forgiving sort, Daisy prayed."Hand that gun to the banker immediately, Olivia Jane Trumbo," she ordered, opening the door, "or you're going to get a good talking-to all the way ho—" She stumbled as the door swung open faster than she had pushed it.A dark-haired, blue-eyed woman stood there, blocking Daisy's way and flicking open a lace fan held in one hand. Two more steps corrected the awkward momentum that almost spilled Daisy, giving her a whiff of fragrance that smelled like a spring breeze dancing through a meadow of wildflowers. A pleasant surprise amid the stuffiness of too many warm bodies gathered in one place."Your name, please?" asked the lady in a cultured voice sounding younger than her appearance. Dressed in a tea gown the blue of her eyes, her hair swept up in some fancy do, she seemed overdressed for a simple visit to the bank. "That little hoodlum told me not to let anyone in here but her mother.""That would be me," Daisy informed her, wishing she had taken a little more time with her appearance this morning, "and she's no hoodlum. Olivia just sometimes goes about things different from most folks."This was as much her fault as Ollie's. She'd wanted Ollie to be older before she learned about the death of her father, but Ollie had started asking questions about Knox several months ago. Someone had obviously opened the subject of his death up for discussion. Her child finally asked why she still wore widow's weeds since Old Miz Jenkins said the proper mourning period should be only two years, not three. Daisy simply replied that the material was still sturdy and they didn't need to be wasteful.Since finding out about her daddy, Ollie had a burr under her saddle, insisting she didn't want to be hugged on too much. Daisy tended to give her daughter time on her own so she wouldn't feel overprotected or smothered with attention. Too much time this morning had allowed the seven-year-old to get her hands on a gun and arrive at this crazy hostage scheme."Olivia Jane, where did you get that gun?" Daisy demanded."Better step aside and let her in," Ollie warned, nodding her honey-colored head. "She used my gettin'-in-trouble name."Daisy moved past the beautiful lady and around some baggage next to the door."Did you say her last name is Trumbo? Were the two of you related to Knox Trumbo?" asked the stern-faced man who stood by himself to the left of the teller's cage. He started to edge closer, his forehead furrowed as his gaze swept Daisy from hem to bonnet. On a different day, she might have taken the time to study him closer, admiring his good grooming and such, but all she could do was concentrate on reaching her daughter's side rather than answering him."They're his widow and child," informed the banker behind the teller's cage. "Daisy and Olivia."Ollie waved the gun at the woman with the fan. "Don't move any closer, mister, or I might accidentally hurt your lady friend here. It won't take Mama but a minute to make up her mind about all you fellas then I'll let'cha go. If she likes you, you can talk to her plenty in a minute."The seven-year-old's head rose then fell as she took in the sight of him from hat to boot tip. "She's got a real fondness for clean people, though. I should know. I got dirty bathwater to prove it all the time." Ollie nodded toward the cowboys standing to the right of the cage. "And since you're the only fella wearing Sunday clean, 'cept Sam, you got a pretty good chance out of all of ya to get on my list. Sam don't count, though. He's the banker. He's got to dress good."Daisy cringed at her daughter's outspokenness. The clean-looking man didn't back up the few steps he'd gained but seemed willing to wait her out. Cautious, Daisy decided. A wise man."Take a quick look, Mama, then I'll be ready for some sense." Ollie's gaze locked with Daisy's and confirmed that she understood totally the kind of talking-to she was about to get from her mother.Daisy realized Ollie was deliberately avoiding an answer about the gun, so she went ahead and studied the well-groomed stranger long enough to make sure he meant no harm to Ollie. He dressed like a businessman and clearly spent more of his hours indoors than out, but broad shoulders and his muscular frame appeared strong enough to handle himself if someone wronged him. She hoped to end this situation before anything such as that took place."The sooner you and your daughter are finished, ma'am—" his voice held a timbre deep and resonant, making her wonder from what part of the country it had been cultivated "—the sooner my sister can return to my side and we can go about our business."That put a whole new light on his intentions. Daisy couldn't fault him for wanting to protect his own. She respected such a man and would have shown him a friendlier disposition if they weren't in such tense circumstances."I'm sure these fine gentlemen mean me no harm at all," cooed his sister, flashing the cowboys a smile and fanning her face. "Please, take your time, Mrs. Trumbo."Ollie's hands started to shake just from the sheer weight of the gun. Daisy faced the lineup of cowhands, deciding it best to get on with her daughter's ploy so this could be ended as quickly as possible. Though one or two cowboys focused intently on Ollie, none appeared too worried about their safety. A red-haired cowhand in the front of the line was actually grinning."How about me?" the banker asked. "Can I move now that your mother's here, Ollie?" Sweat stained his thinning hairline and darkened his shirt near the armpits.Daisy didn't give Ollie time to answer. "You go about your business, Sam. We apologize for this and promise it won't happen again, will it, Olivia?"Ollie's twin braids swung back and forth as she shook her head. "I better not promise, Mama, 'cause I might be lying. Sometimes I do that 'fore I know what comes over me. Old Miz Jenkins says that's 'cause I'm young and still got a bunch'a sins to sow. I don't know what that means, but when she says it everybody around her pew gives her an 'Amen, sister.' You don't want me breaking one of them commandments if I can help it, do ya?""I most certainly do not." Daisy frowned, though several of the cowhands laughed and she noticed a grin flash across the brother's face. She should have been happy most were taking this with such good humor, but Daisy couldn't until she had control of the gun.Ollie took a deep breath and finished her discussion with Banker Cardwell. "Besides, you don't have to worry no more anyway, Sam. Mama said all your whiskers would give her burns if you was a kissing kind of man. And you know that's one of them things on my list. A new daddy's got to be good at kissin' Mama, and I don't want it hurtin' her none when he does it."She seemed to remember where she should be targeting and adjusted her aim. The tiny crooked last finger she'd inherited from her daddy's side of the family stuck out as if she were balancing a teacup. "Just gonna see if any of these fellas over here will do.""First time I've ever been held at gunpoint to prove I'm a good kisser," one of the cowboys joked.Heat blazed in Daisy's cheeks as she dismissed him and her daughter's demand, instantly moving on to the three men who had been hanging around High Plains on weekends the past month. She had heard they were helping out at the old Rafford place during branding season. The others were probably looking for work. Dressed in work shirts, bandannas, vests and chaps to cover their denims, they didn't appear any different than most cowboys who rode the circuit of ranches come spring.Despite Ollie's earlier comments about the more finely dressed man, most of the cowboys had shaved and cleaned up before riding into town. That showed respect, one of the requirements Daisy had added to her daughter's list. She appreciated a respectful man of clean ways who traveled a good path. As she tried to do herself, though she failed at times. If she ever did choose to remarry, not that she thought she actually would, the man must honor all of God's ways and love her and Ollie as his own. He must put no one else but God before them. She would offer her heart to no one less. She would give Ollie no less than the best of fathers this time. Until that ever came about, she intended to be and provide everything her daughter needed. No matter how hard the struggle.Daisy moved on to the cowboys' faces and whether or not they could stare her straight in the eyes. Every one of them looked away before she finished, a couple of them edging their hats down low as if not wanting to be seen too closely. That made no points with her. Anyone she allowed to enter her and Ollie's lives she needed to trust, and eyes spoke volumes about a person. The rest of the men's features ranged from passably pleasing to make-you-look-twice, but she put little value in appearances these days. Each of them would be a suitable match to some woman in the world somewhere, just not her.Daisy supposed she should have never told Ollie that Knox had been the handsomest man in the county when she'd married him. Her daughter now believed having uncommon good looks was an important requirement for a would-be daddy. As Daisy had learned the hard way, a man needed something more than pleasant features to be a good husband or a father. He needed a heart filled with sincere love and kindness and a soul full of truth. She'd discovered too late that Knox had fallen short of that expectation and she hadn't known how to help him improve.Ollie knew only that her father had the reputation of a hero. What purpose would it serve to let her or others believe any different of him? It would only hurt Ollie in the end. Daisy decided it was better to keep the sad truth hidden away in her own heart than to crush Ollie's.Though she allowed Ollie to have her fun with the future-daddy list, Daisy doubted any man could ever really measure up and be able to heal the depth of that hurt in Knox and disappointment in herself. Instead, she set about proving to herself and every other member of the Trumbo clan in this community that she could make a decent living for her and Ollie and didn't need anyone else to make them happy or earn their keep."Let these men go, Olivia," Daisy said quietly, her tone filled with the pain of memories. "We've delayed them long enough."Ollie shrugged. "I wasn't much stuck on none of 'em, either, Mama. Not a one knows a thing about threading your machine or making a shoe, so they won't be no help with the biz'ness. They just shoo cows and keep 'em rounded up. How 'bout their eyes? Any of them got that special look you want?"The cowboy in front thumbed back his hat and winked at Daisy. He had one of the priorities Ollie had written on the list. Taller than Mama. A lot of men fell short of matching Daisy's height. Six feet in widow-black daunted more men than it didn't."You got a real rooter-tooter on your hands there, Widow." The winker's grin broadened. "I might be willing to stick around to change your opinion." His voice lowered into a husky tone that implied more than Daisy needed or wanted to know about the kind of man he was.The lady with the fan tapped Daisy with it and gave a low throaty laugh. "I wouldn't turn that one down, ma'am. He looks like quite a charmer.""Leave the dear widow to her business, Petula," warned her brother, his gaze locking with his sister's. "I've already told you, we won't be here long enough to make any proper acquaintances."Petula's lower lip pouted. Daisy took note of the undercurrent of emotion layering his tone and his stoic expression. His features were similar to but more angular than his flirting sister's. His eyes, though, were incomparable to any others she'd ever seen. The blue-violet of the lake water in her back pasture after a spring thaw, they were layered with fathoms so clear nothing could be hidden in their depths. The kind of eyes that one might trust, she wondered, unsettled that they had stirred such a curiosity within her.Daisy quickly pushed the question aside. He was someone just passing through. She'd had enough of trying to trust a man to settle down. To make herself important enough in his life he would prefer to stay. The expression that now thinned the stranger's lips and chiseled his jaw held no softness, no gentleness, only command for his sister's obedience. He didn't appear a man to be taken lightly."Proper wasn't exactly on your sister's mind, mister," the winker dared."What are you implying?" demanded Petula's protector, his legs firmly planting themselves apart. Massive fists rose to defend his sister's honor. "Ladies, please step out of the way."His knuckles looked scarred and broken, certainly not the hands of a duded-up gentleman. This would not be his first fight or the first defense of Petula, Daisy noted.Time to get this under control."Excuse them, sir," she apologized for the cowboy's rudeness, hoping to play peacemaker, "you're new to these parts. Men around here love a good Saturday fight just so they can sit in church the next morning and have something to ask forgiveness for. Don't you, fellows?"She hoped she could make the defender see reason and not let this escalate into a brawl. "They sometimes deliberately rile somebody just to get a rise out of them. It's a source for bragging rights so they can confess the most amount of wrongdoing and need for redemption come Sunday. That lets them enjoy the women who want to sit beside them and tame the bad boys." She shrugged. "Just a Texan's way of courting, so to speak.""Yeah, that's what we're doing—" Winker elbowed the cowhand next to him "—courting. What you gonna do about it, partner?"

I'm a certified personality trainer. Our personalities are 60% genetic and 40% nurturing. But the nurturing can be so bad that it overpowers the genetic. Dewanna Pace did a great job of keeping Nash and Pet true to character after growing up in a highly dysfunctional home. I loved seeing how both characters showed their flaws and then began to change as their environment changed. This is a love story where emotions and passions are aroused in a healthy way of getting to know each other. It shows great insight into how people are in real life and their potential to change and be their very best self. The little girl Ollie was a humorous delight all the way through the story. I enjoyed seeing her genetic personality coming out in a home where she was truly loved. I highly recommend this book for people who are looking for an inspirational romance that rings true to life with plenty of insights for our own relationships.

Her wit shines through along with the depth of her gentle heart and is reflected in Daisy's and Bass's tender love story. Their love develops slowly as they find the courage to let go of the past and learn to trust again and the final result is a forever kind of love. So many rich, endearing characters. Daisy's daughter, Ollie, is such a pistol as she searches for a "Daddy." DeWanna perfectly captures the child’s unique way of putting things and I never knew what that little girl was going to do or say next. Then there were Daisy's brothers-in-law who kept me in stitches, especially Max Trumbo. If you're looking for a story that will delight and entertain, this is the book for you. I fully recommend it.

Her marriage was far from perfect and so decides to never marry again, but Ollie wants her mom married to the perfect man. Ollie begins a list of the perfect qualities a man would have to have to be a consideration for a Dad. She's a smart little girl, but has learned wild ways from her uncles. The widows hands are full, and she indulges her daughter, but Ollie takes it to far when she holds men at the bank as hostages so she can interview them for her list.Parker is a wealthy man who paid the Widow Trumbo's husband money so he wouldn't have to fight in the war so his little sister wouldn't have to live with strangers, because their parents died. He feels guilty because Trumbo died, and feels he should help the widow and stops to check on her. Their paths cross when Ollie holds the hostages at the bank with real robbers there. It's a cute story from beginning to end with a lot in between. The robbers want to get rid of their witnesses, the town is full of people for the races which adds problems. Parker is shot trying to save the Widow, Ollie, and his sister. The list goes on which makes the book intriguing. There are many twists and unexpected turns to make the story really good. There's also a love story in there that is sweet. I wanted a little more story to find how others ended up, so I gave it four stars, but recommend this book.

That's why I try to lessen meat dishes and incorporate more seafood in our weekly meals. This book contains delicious and nutritious seafood recipes. My daughter particularly loves Fish Nuggets and would ask me to prepare it all the time while my husband's favorite is the Rice with Prawns.

Satan has made a new demon, and he’s a doozy, maybe the most powerful ever created. There’s just one problem … this freshly-minted hellion isn’t sure he wants the job.

In the wacky final volume of the Circles in Hell series, Steve Minion attends Beast Barracks, where he learns both the arcane and mundane arts of being a servant of the Devil. Strength, speed and endurance are all part of a demon’s physical makeup, but he must be taught to be sneaky, cruel and ruthless… and of course to ignore personal hygiene. As Steve begins work as a full-fledged bad guy, he must confront the inevitable: demons exist to torment the damned, and Hell’s former handyman-in-chief doesn't seem to have the stomach for the work. Still, there’s no alternative for our hero. Once a demon, always a demon, as the saying goes. Steve’s stuck in his new role, but really, what good to anyone is a reluctant demon? The Reluctant Demon is the fourth volume in the fantasy comedy series, Circles in Hell. It has been compared to other works of “Hell Fiction” including The Screwtape Letters and Good Omens and to the paranormal humor of Tom Holt, Christopher Moore and Douglas Adams. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A fun and satisfying end to an enjoyable series! By Karen Eisenbrey Tricked into becoming a demon, Steve Minion is surprised to discover he has real aptitude for it -- except when it comes to torturing humans. He has a strong and unpleasant reaction to that requirement of his new (eternal) career. Although he's living with the seductive Lilith, a succubus who cares from him and whom he has grown to love, he misses his human friends and still loves Flo, for whom he gave up the last of his humanity and free will. Or did he? Mark Cain manages to pull off the ending I was hoping for all along without making it seem like the obvious outcome. A fun and satisfying end to an enjoyable series!

Every one of these books is a gem. Savor them while you can! The character development in the first book will make you want to read the entire series. Excellent writing. The plots are great and the resolutions to the plots are not predictable except that in the truest sense of being a comedy - the protagonist "wins." But it's the journey that makes these books special. Highly recommend them to all

Well written (excluding some occasional spelling mistakes) and overall very entertaining. The characters are so fully thought out it's hard not to love then. An entirely worthwhile read.

After almost dying at the hands of his own father, Andy is shocked when the lovely scent of his mate pushes through the haze of pain. Eric doesn’t trust this wolf trying to take charge of his brother’s care and is ready to do battle once again for his brother. The man, Jackson Burke, prevails and refuses to leave his mate’s side. Andy, once healed, feels as if he’s lost in a dream. His mate is the most attractive and attentive man he’s ever met. Could this be his forever? Could this be the love he always believed existed? Alas, dreams are often shattered and this one is no different. Can Jackson Burke fix what he has broken or are they both destined for only loneliness? Jackson Burke is a good man, but doesn’t often think about the consequences of his actions. The truth comes out and Jackson acts rashly and jeopardizes his mating and the very nearly his life. Can Jackson overcome his own actions and his own prejudices? His future happiness depends on it.

Laughter, humble, fear, and great sadness; these things are what makes a book great. The author did a great job. However, the author messed up a part of the book. When Andy took off running and Jackson was following behind him, they were in wolf form. That would mean no clothes! So when Jackson pulled Andy up from the cliff and he was holding him in his lap, Andy should not have been wearing a shirt and Jackson should not have his clothes on. It was confusing and I had stop reading and go back because I thought I missed a page somewhere. Frustrating to say the least.

Eric has always been there for him. He is very protective of Andy. Eric does not trust Jackson and after hurting Andy, Eric definitely does not trust Jackson. Will Jackson be able to win Eric’s trust? Will Eric ever be able to trust Jackson? Will Eric be the one that stands in-between the two Mates? Will they be able to get around all the obstacles in their way?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. My favorite so far By JTorleif I think that I liked this couple the best of all of the Pack Rules books. Both Jeremiah and Andy were broken characters and their relationship suffered because of it, but they were able to grow and overcome their trials. I really liked that Andy wasn't willing to instantly forgive Jeremiah just because he decided to change his mind.

‘A Tough Man’: Revised ….Gritty, violent post-apocalyptic humor. The tale will make you smile, but it will be a bittersweet reflection inspired by the character who stars in this brief shining moment of his life. I have included a second story. Please enjoy reading 'Empire State Building'. It is a tale of post-apocalypse hope. ‘A Tough Man: Revised’, is a complete rewrite of a short story I published some years ago. In its first incarnation I went over the top with a strong southern vernacular. If you’ve ever read an unabridged version ‘Uncle Remus’ in its original format you will understand. This newest version of, ‘A Tough Man’, retains the excitement of the original but is better styled for the mainstream reader.

A Tough Man: Revised, by Terry McDonald

Review Reviewer: ted rossmen- TNBW Comments: Dialect...It works for and against writers. For me being southern born and bred as well, it sounded like Sunday 'round the dinner table. Readers not familiar with the southern vernacular and sayings. It can be confusing and difficult to decipher. It is almost code talking for some. My advice, keep the vernacular steady although I would try to keep in mind that some readers will be lost initially so be aware of that. The upside to this is you have a strong story anchored by strong characters and much like the works of other "southin" writers (Twain) comes to mind immediately. "Huckleberry Finn's" dialogue is initially difficult to comprehend but after a chapter or two you don't notice it anymore and yer sailin' through't like it weren't nuthin'. So says me go fer it!

By Deesh Having read Terry McDonald's Hard Roads (and wanting more when the book was finished), I purchased this story to "tide me over" until the next Hard Roads installment in the series. I enjoyed the story and characters, but found the vernacular to be distracting. And just for the record......most of us (southerners) don't really speak like that!Keep the stories coming, Terry!

Was especially inspired to give this one a go because I truly love the character development style of this author. A post apocalyptic tales go the set up is standard--what ISN'T standard is the character study and human pathos. A TOUGH MAN delivers this up in the form of a tough mudder who takes on some of the infamous John Saint's men (from the aforementioned novel. The protagonist in our short tale decides to go out in a blaze of glory, so to speak. Do not want to give anything away, but suffice it to say when it ended, I was like "Say whuut" lol. A book SHOULD make you feel that way--like "Gimmee some more!" Now that I have read this snippet I do believe I will sit down have my hubby watch the kids and finish HARD ROAD--it will be a more than worthwhile investment of time!

Keep 'em coming, Terry By Dixie I liked this book and the price was VERY good, but Terry, you can't do the dialect (whatever it was) very well at all. For some of the words I had to stop and think. Am now reading "Hard Road" and really like it. Still looking forward to the two sequels to "Disaster".

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Is it possible to be even more amazing than the first book? By Toni In short.......stunning contents more fantastic than his first book!Longer review? My fingers are ready to fly across these keys! I can safely say that the majority of people were beyond happy with the long-awaited first book from master sugar artist, Carlos Lischetti. Devotees were begging him to share his skill, knowledge, and artistic perfection of his sugar creations. In short, his works are amazing. So many people loved his work but could not attend his classes, as he is located in England, though he does travel to teach as well. So next best thing is a book, right? If you peruse the cake decorating websites and magazines and blogs, you cannot help seeing his sugar projects everywhere. Fantasy caricatures of people, places, and things made from modeling paste. But they looked so perfect, so flawless, that you wondered if it was possible to be as good as he is but then.........Carlos, with the help of his equally talented twin brother (who is a crazy-talented artist of photography and illustration in his own right), produced "Animation in Sugar", his first book that introduced us to his instruction on this sugar art.Fast forward to "Animation in Sugar: Part 2" and you are treated to more instruction and inspiration from the master. This book is large and heavy with 256 pages of voluminous teaching and photography, that includes detailed step-by-step photography, in close-up detail, and in full and glorious color; there are no black and white tutorials. The pages have a nice satin sheen to them and you can "feel" the quality and effort placed into this book. Some of the projects in this book were ones that I had hoped were in his first book, but were not, therefore I saved those photos of his creations for inspiration. But this second book had all the projects that I hoped for, so now I don't know which one to start first. The great part of this sugar art is that you can tailor-make this to whatever and whomever you want to characterize, as many details of the projects are basic to any structure. The figures can be as large or small as you wish so the scope of the size won't overwhelm you.The one project that I love, which is the Geisha Girl, is the same one that is on the cover and dust jacket and it is just perfection. I love the deep red of her kimono.Without giving away too much detail, here is some insight into this book: There are 15 projects offered, ranging from adorable animals to caricatured people ranging from playful to sentimental celebrations. The first 25 pages deal with equipment and recipes, then presentation of the modeling paste he uses. Some might note that the names used for between here and Europe can be different but the paste is till the same. The "glue" recipes used to build images is given, along with prepping cakes before, or after, you make the images. My most favorite part is of course, the figurines! But before you can really get into creating them, you have to know the body part basics, and coloring (whether using food paste colors or airbrushing); this is discussed in detail. Another welcomed addition is the logistics of transporting your figurines so that they are well-protected en route to their destination. Then the fun begins: who or what are you going to make? Dogs or piggies? A plumpy Italian chef? Halloween goblin? A sweet wedding couple? These are just a few of the 15 figures Carlos teaches. The last pages are the templates and schematics of the projects that can be enlarged of course. Both the inside and back covers have adorable pencil caricatures that his brother, Elio, drew as the fantasy of each project became reality. As far as who would find this easy enough, it is obviously perfect for someone experienced, but even for a novice, with patience and time, this would be great for building confidence and skill.OK Carlos...........start working on book number 3! Peace!

Although she didn't need it for the baking references the figure sculpture was very instructive with excellent sequential pictures. It was interesting to her because her mother (who does not cook) does sculptures in clay and helped her understand the skill needed.

He's a master at sugar art and his instructions are easy to follow--I bought his first book and made many of the sugar figurines without too much difficulty. It does take practice and a love for creating beautiful things from sugar. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn how to make beautiful things from sugar, fondant, and cake.

Shannon was pushed from pillar to post for years until Uncle Baxter left her with the owners of a Trading Post where she was dressed as a boy and called Red. Tobias and Adelaide gave her a roof over her head and trained her to run the Trading Post, as well as, prepare her to run a household. When they left her with the Post and everything in it to retire to New Mexico, her adventures began. Red's reputation as a young boy with his wolf was wide spread. He was honest in all his dealings and generous to the neighbors. Micah Downs was confused by his attraction to the young boy until he was shocked to find out that Red was not a young lad, but a beautiful woman.

Unfortunately, the punctuation errors abound to the point where they can be a distraction. Run on sentences, misplaced apostrophes, and even some spelling mistakes mar an otherwise good story. There are a few parts that need a bit more fleshing-out, as well. That being said, the characters and plot are enjoyable.

Many typos, simple writing style, some redundancy, some parts were unbelievable, pronoun misuse (talking about mating female horse & referred to her as him). Too many characters, though developed well, hard to keep up with. Potential to be edited into a great book!

Good western/frontier story By TexasTracking I was delighted to find this Jean Kuhnke story - a good western for me has strong lead characters with challenges, humor and some action. Strong female lead to appreciate - the story is primarily told through her viewpoint although at times point of view gets a little confusing. Plenty of strong faith - people living out their beliefs rather than just saying they are believers. Strong Christian theme so if that bothers you - you might not like the story. Enjoyed the setting and twists of story line. Good read - I stayed up too late last night to finish reading it!

By Michael Strassberg This book takes an exegetical approach to Genesis as a work created by writers who saw far beyond their contemporary culture to create an enduring statement about a singular God, his greatest creation (the human being) and the moral and ethical demands that God places upon us. He compares Genesis to other great creation myths, and shows two primary things; 1) that a the monotheistic belief places God above and beyond all of nature, which is radically different from other contemporaneous polytheistic religions, and 2) that there is an order, logic and morality in the world that people must follow in order to not be estranged from God and ultimately themselves and society. Law, justice, mercy, charity are values expressed in a book which was written at a time when these were radical ideas. The author's mastery of history and religion are forged into an engaging, powerful exposition of the profound meaning of Genesis and it's seminal importance in the history of human thought.

Even better than his book on Exodus By Michael Lewyn Sarna puts Genesis in its historical context, showing details that would have made many stories from Genesis more comprehensible to Bible-era readers. For example, today's readers may be a bit baffled by Abraham's occasional attempts to pass off Sarah as his sister. But Sarna explains that in the ancient Mideast women had the status of a "sister-wife", superior to other wives. Similarly, Sarna clarifies the Tower of Babel story, explaining how the Torah makes fun of paganism. Reading Sarna won't necessarily change your mind about large theological questions; believers will remain believers after reading him, and unbelievers will remain unbelievers. But Sarna gives background that makes the Torah come to life a bit more.

By Dean Chang As a self-professed evangelical Christian who is tired of the anti-science, anti-intellectual rhetoric that typifies the discourse coming from the American religious right these days, this book is a refreshing take on the true significance of the Book of Genesis both as a historical document and as religious text and I urge Christians of all walks to take a read.According to Sarna, Genesis is remarkable because of its radical departure from the Near Eastern myths and motifs of the times, the creation story in particular, which contrasts the absolute power and righteousness of a monotheistic deity with the capriciousness and unpredictability of polytheism, places an emphasis on morality as the key to a meaningful life as opposed to preoccupation with immortality typical of pagan traditions, is deliberately non-political, non-cultic and non-magical, describes mankind as the pinnacle of creation, endowed with free will and having to take responsibility for his own actions, as compared to the creation of man as an afterthought to serve the physical needs of the gods. This is where the meat of Genesis lies, and ironically, American evangelicals have spent the last few decades trying to infuse Genesis with the "magic" that the author(s) of Genesis tried so hard to eliminate. They've done this by propagating a "literal" interpretation fraught with logical and scientific potholes that can only be filled by an almighty genie who despite creating the physical laws of the universe violated all of them in his very first act of creation and then writing it down in just the fashion to confound all but the most faithful.Sarna's analysis reveals the irrational bias many modern American evangelicals have in reading Genesis from the perspective of a 21st century, western educated individual with an obsession toward a certain version of historicity. We expect the ancients to both understand and care just as deeply as we do about every name being included in a genealogy and ensuring that the reader doesn't misunderstand the second law of thermodynamics. This type of hubris not only makes all Christians look foolish, but worst of all diverts attention from the concepts and ideas that leave, in my opinion, an indelible mark of divine inspiration, which is much more shocking and awe-inspiring to me than getting all the animals on earth onto an boat and then getting the kangaroos and kolas thousands of miles to Australia without leaving any fossil record.Sarna's book reinforces for me that God can work through the natural world just as effectively as the supernatural and one should not give greater credence to one or the other. That the book he inspired probably came to us much like the universe shouldn't try anyone's faith, it should only serve to focus us on the real reasons why the Bible has endured throughout the ages and continues to be relevant to us now more than ever.
