Review A ForewordBy: Rep. Darrell Issa (49th Congressional District of California), Chairman of the HouseCommittee on Oversight and Government Reform California. No matter where you live, what you do, how much you earn, everyone has a picture in their mind of what the “Golden State” means to them. To some, it’s the home of companies at the forefront of innovation like Apple or Google. To others, it’s where storied franchises such as the Los Angeles Lakers or the San Francisco 49ers play every week. For visitors, it’s Disneyland, Hollywood, the Golden Gate, beaches, deserts, mountains, and wine. California is a place where so many have come from somewhere else hoping to find a better quality of life. The Golden State – rich with opportunity. My wife and I were no different. We had a business that started at a kitchen table in Cleveland, Ohio that we wanted to grow and make into something bigger and long lasting. California was a state that had everything: farmers and factories, teachers and scientists, entrepreneurs and immigrants. Potential was limitless. Success was celebrated. Hard work was expected.  Government had limitations. In 1967, speaking in Long Beach, then-Governor Ronald Reagan outlined the guiding principles that would take California down the “right road.” He talked about it as the “road ahead to a better, more responsible, more meaningful life for all our citizens, a life in which they are allowed to develop and pursue their aims and ambitions to the fullest, without the constant interference and domination of big spending, big brother government.” That is the kind of vision that brought businesses, large and small, to California because it embraced possibility and understood that the lynchpin of progress was to foster prosperity.Today’s California is virtually unrecognizable. A state that welcomed job creators now penalizes them. A state that attracted businesses is now losing them. A state that enabled millions of working families to prosper is now the one that just takes more  and more away from them. The inescapable reality is that California has lost some of its luster. It still has a world-class economy, but that is a legacy of the past century. Many of today’s best and brightest are looking elsewhere – discouraged by a high cost of living and a tax and regulatory climate that is hostile to entrepreneurship and the free market. California has twice as many jobless workers as it had five years ago. The state’s income tax rate is the highest in the nation. The corporate income tax rate is America’s fifth highest.  Californians pay an additional 53.5 cents per gallon in gas taxes. All-the-while, state government spending grew 35% per capita in just the past ten years. So what changed? The State’s capital, Sacramento, is now a one Party town. ProgressiveDemocrats have dominated both houses of the state legislature for more than a decade.Unchecked, they have legislated, taxed, and regulated with zeal. For this bunch, government is a means to an end. It exists to limit the excesses of the free market, to redistribute wealth, to advance a far-left social agenda. When you look at the overall fiscal picture of our nation, Jim Lacy’s “Taxifornia” strikes numerous chords. Nationally, we are in the midst of a struggle surrounding the proper province of government in our lives. “Taxifornia” illustrates what can happen when a government is guided by a “take more”philosophy. Jobs are poached. Tomorrow’s innovators innovate somewhere else. Smallbusinesses shutdown. Big businesses look to other places to expand and build. With what is happening in Washington today, “Taxifornia” foreshadows what the consequences for our nation will be if we continue down this broken path of more taxes, more regulations and more government. Other nations will steal our jobs. Our competitors in the global market will take our best and brightest. Innovation in America will suffocate as other world powers build new economies with the talented innovators that we have chased away. For policymakers, “Taxifornia” is a blueprint offered by someone who witnessed California’s evolution from over-taxation to taxpayer revolt – and its slide back.Jim Lacy was there at the beginning of one of the most important movements in California’s history – the successful passage of Proposition 13. That movement evolved into the Howard Jarvis Taxpayer’s Association, which to this day, is the state’s most influential voice for limited government. Lacy’s “Taxifornia” is a cautionary tale of what can and will happen to America if Washington follows the lead of what Sacramento has done in the past decade. By the end of last year, California had lost 73,000 businesses. Other states like Texas and New York are running campaigns in California hitting the message that California is bad for business and companies large and small should leave now before it gets worse. If Washington continues to grow government instead of growing business, the jobs leavingCalifornia for other states will instead be leaving the United States for Brazil or China. Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi have a common vision with Sacramento’s ruling class.Government in Washington has greatly expanded its reach under Obama’s rule, limiting our healthcare choices, raising the cost of energy, taxing more money out of our paychecks. There is still time. We can restore California to prosperity and trim back national government. But it is up to us to do it, to demand it. Jim has spent his entire life devoted to the simple idea that the only change that can come is one that is derived from the will of the people – sometimes it’s in the act of an electoral revolt. Recent history reminds us that it’s possible. In 2003, with distrust of government at an all-time high and facing an avalanche of new taxes and fees, Californians took unprecedented and historic action by recalling Governor Gray Davis.  With one, unified and deafening voice, Californians sent a message to Sacramento that they wanted change and reform. Jim’s counsel was essential to the success of the recall campaign. We saw firsthand, the raw emotion that propelled it forward. Up-and-down the state, I heard from Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, Independents who all felt the same way, that government had abandoned them and was completely out-of-touch with the needs of working people. Yet, here we are a decade later and there are fewer jobs, less opportunities, higher taxes and no end in sight. Californians are paying more for gas, more for groceries, more for electricity, more for education but have less in their paychecks. How did Sacramento politicians respond? The Democrat-controlled State Legislature introduced 110 new bills that raise taxes.  These taxes touch on the everyday things. Ask yourself, can you afford to pay new taxes on tires, cars, sodas, and mattresses? That’s Sacramento’s answer.  It sounds a lot like what Washington is telling the American people today. And as businesses abandon California, job opportunities continue to decline and the people are left to fend for themselves, big government will tell you that they are the solution, not the problem. Truthfully, until the people stand-up and demand better for themselves and for their families, government will continue to get away with it because right now, no one is holding them accountable. California once embodied the American Dream. It was once a place where small businesses grew into large ones. Where ordinary people achieved extraordinary things. Where the circle of success was in reach for all who worked for it and where people expected the best for themselves and their future. Unless something changes, that future is in doubt. Think about the world-renowned institutions in California: Berkeley, Stanford, USC, UCLA, and UCSD to name a few. Imagine sending your kid to one of those institutions believing in the idea that doing so will ensure a better future for your child. Now imagine your son or daughter graduating with a law degree and knowing that half of the people who graduated with your kid won’t be able to find a job. That’s the reality of today’s California. That could be the reality of tomorrow’s United States – which is why Lacy is so insistent that now is the time to stand-up and fight back. You see they’ve stopped listening to you in Sacramento because you aren’t talking loud enough.  They’ve stopped caring about the consequences of their actions, so you have to be the ones to hold them accountable. What would you do to ensure your child’s future? What would you say to someone who after a long day’s work, decided that half of what you earned now belonged to them?  What Governor Reagan said is just as applicable today as it was in 1967, “We intend to put an end to that kind of thinking – an end to the philosophy that government has a right to match taxes to whatever it wants to spend instead of spending only what needs to be spent.” Each and every person can be the instrument that begins to change California, and the country, for the better. Californians can be the substance of their own prosperity but first, they must be the instruments of change that hold Sacramento politicians accountable. Lacy’s “Taxifornia” is our call to action.

From the Back Cover Liberalism is to blame for California's rotting economy. The biggest and most important state in America was once a land of opportunity in a wonderful climate. But times have surely changed. Things have never been worse for California and its citizens. California's "one-party" domination of the liberal faction of the California Democratic Party and their union and environmental lobby cronies have wrecked havoc on California, and all Americans are losing as a result. In Taxifornia, James V. Lacy identifies and examines the true causes of California's decline. Californians are victims of the heaviest taxation in all of America, and those high taxes are now steadily destroying the state's economy. Tax-and-spend liberals who are in control have created a state that taxes and regulates more than any other state in the country, and have engineered a rotting economy with among the highest unemployment of any state in the nation. Its high taxes hurt all Californians by making the state too expensive for business to turn profitable. Business flight has become endemic. California's over-regulation of businesses depresses employment in the state. A widely accepted tenet among liberal politicians, political science academics, and the media in California is that no development at all is a good thing. It is a state that educates the worst but pays the best to its teachers, a place that is widely considered by most CEOs to be one of the worst locations in the nation to run a business, where local governments are going bankrupt, and where an out-of-control public employee pay and pension system threatens to gobble up and divert almost all available taxpayer resources to a point where cities and counties simply cannot afford to pay for police, fire, or road maintenance anymore. California has an outdated environmental policy and an energy policy that makes the state almost totally dependent on one source of power: imported natural gas. It is a place where the public employee union worker who controls traffic in the Bay Area Rapid Transit District maintenance yard in poverty-stricken and near bankrupt Oakland is paid more annually than the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. Top leaders of the California Republican Party readily acknowledge their party is in very deep trouble. Jim Brulte, the state chairman of the GOP and a respected veteran of the California Legislature, has identified the source of the GOP's sorry condition as a "failure to recognize changing demographics" and has said that Republicans have been too reluctant to venture into communities outside of their traditional power base. "If we want to be successful, we have to get outside of our comfort zone," Brulte said. "Too many Republican Party leaders or Republican elected officials spend all their time talking to the choir." Having identified the problems correctly, Lacy offers observations--with over 800 footnotes--about what can be done to restore political balance in the state, as well as some rational ideas for how California can fix its economic problems. But the economic and political situation in California today is at such an extreme, whether California can ever return to the broad prosperity of the past and once again lead the nation, is a very open question."One doesn't have to agree with everything in Jim Lacy's book to understand his basic thesis is correct: California is not healthy today because it taxes and spends too much, and liberal Democrats have had too much power for too long" - Senator Jim Brulte (Ret), Chairman, California Republican Party "James Lacy courageously calls out the new special interests in California today--not oil companies or polluting businesses--rather, public employee unions like the SEIU and California Teachers Association for their massive spending on politics and lobbying that has created a dysfunctional state that taxes too much, spends too much, pays public employees too much, have created an untenable pension system that is bankrupting cities across the state, and that delivers among the worst educations of any state to its students. As Ronald Reagan once said, "If the Pilgrims had landed in California, we would have never found the rest of the country." From the beautiful mountain peaks to the sandy ocean's edge, California rocks. It has it all: weather, beautiful scenery and outstanding people. But California's political system was captured by public employee and teachers unions, and the objective of governance was changed to helping everyone to helping whatever group could win the king of the mountain contest in Sacramento.Jim Lacy's book captures the heartbreak of California's transition from a pro-business mecca to anti-business bureaucratic mess. California today is virtually ungovernable and completely broken and broke.I had to leave this state myself for the better business climate in Arizona. I wish I could afford to do business in California, but they make it nearly impossible for small businesses to flourish.I pray that the citizens will listen to the voices in the wilderness of California politics like Jim Lacy. It is time to cut taxes and restore this beautiful state. You must read this book to see the road forward to success.

It's a must-read for everyone in the country. We're all familiar with the old saying, "As California goes, so goes the nation." Frightening to contemplate in this case.Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA) wrote: " 'Taxifornia' is a cautionary tale of what can and will happen to America if Washington follows the lead of what Sacramento has done in the past decade." SEA BASS WITH CORN RELISH AND BRAISED BABY BOK CHOY   Dairy | Serves 4   Sea bass has virtually become a generic term for a variety of meaty, mild-flavored, white-fleshed fish. (This does not include Chilean sea bass, which could nonetheless be used for this recipe.) Whichever kind of fresh sea bass you find at your fishmonger will work just fine here.   It’s the creamy, sweet corn relish that really makes this dish distinctive. A touch of cayenne gives it a pleasing hint of heat. Look for leafy, green bok choy in most super-markets. The “baby” version used here is the smallest and most tender kind.   Before you start cooking, separate your ingredients as they are listed below. This is the preparation order; following it will make your work in the kitchen much easier. The relish and bok choy do not need to be served piping hot. They will still be warm when the fish is ready to eat. (But you can quickly reheat them on the stovetop if you desire.)   A rich, barrel-fermented Chardonnay would be our first choice as a wine companion. But many other kinds of white wines would pair nicely as well. Try an off-dry Riesling or Gewürztraminer, for example, or a dry Roussane or Chenin Blanc.   CORN RELISH 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup diced onion 3 cups white corn kernels, fresh (4 or 5 ears) or frozen 1 red bell pepper, diced 1⁄8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 plum tomatoes, coarsely chopped 1/4 teaspoon salt Freshly ground pepper 1/2 cup heavy cream   BRAISED BABY BOK CHOY braised baby bok choy 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 3 cloves garlic, minced 1-1/2 pounds baby bok choy (about 4 bunches), ends trimmed and heads halved lengthwise Salt   FISH 4 sea bass fillets (6 to 8 ounces each), with or without skin Salt and freshly ground pepper 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 tablespoon minced lemon zest   1. Make the corn relish: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until translucent, about 3 minutes. Add the corn, bell pepper, and cayenne. Stir to mix well. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until the kernels are soft, about 10 minutes. Add the tomatoes and salt. Sprinkle in black pepper to taste. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 10 more minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. Stir in the cream and simmer for 2 more minutes. Remove the pan from the heat, cover, and set aside.   2. Make the bok choy: In a large skillet, melt the butter with the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add the bok choy, cover, reduce the heat to medium-low, and cook until the greens are wilted and the fleshy parts are tender, about 5 minutes. Uncover, increase the heat to high, and cook until the liquid evaporates, about 2 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and adjust the seasoning with salt to taste. Cover and set aside.   3. Make the fish: Preheat the oven to 425°F. Season the fillets on both sides with salt and pepper. In a large, ovenproof skillet, heat the olive oil over high heat. When the oil begins to shimmer, place the fillets in the pan skinned-side down (or skin-side down if the fillets have skins), reduce the heat to medium, and cook until golden on the bottoms (or until the skin is crisp), about 3 minutes. Using a spatula, gently turn the fillets, taking care not to let them fall apart. Transfer the pan to the oven and bake until the flesh is opaque throughout, about 3 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and add the butter to the pan alongside the fillets. When it melts, baste the tops of the fillets with the butter. Garnish the fillets with the lemon zest.   4. To serve, divide the corn relish among 4 plates. Arrange each fillet to rest slightly on the relish. Place the bok choy to the side of the corn and fish. Season with pepper to taste.   ###   KOREAN-STYLE FLANKEN WITH ASIAN SLAW AND RED POTATO SALAD   Meat | Serves 6   Flanken are strips of beef cut lengthwise across the short rib bones. Korean-style flanken is sliced thinner than the Jewish version, then marinated and grilled. The Korean cut can be found in most supermarkets, but you may have to look for Korean-style “short ribs,” not flanken. Or, just ask your kosher butcher to slice his flanken into 1/4- to 1/2-inch-thick slices.   Because it is sliced so thin, Korean-style flanken is very tender and cooks quickly. These juicy ribs have a nutty, smoky edge and an almost fruity quality that teams up well with the tangy Asian slaw and spiced potato salad—perfect for summertime dining outdoors. This dish is also ideal for parties, because you can prepare everything well in advance and then be free to socialize with guests. The grilling takes literally only minutes, but you’ll need to prepare the meat in the morning or early afternoon to let it marinate.   In your glass, pour any fruity red wine such as Zinfandel, Syrah, Grenache, or Pinot Noir. Chilled rosé would also make an excellent accompaniment.   FLANKEN 2 tablespoons brown sugar 12 Korean-style beef ribs (about 2-1/2 pounds) 1/4 cup soy sauce or tamari 1/4 cup rice vinegar 1/4 cup toasted sesame oil 3 tablespoons sesame chili oil 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger 4 green onions (white parts only), cut into 1/4-inch-thick rounds   ASIAN COLESLAW 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari 2 tablespoons rice vinegar 1/4 cup toasted sesame oil 1 tablespoon sesame chili oil Juice of 1 lime 1 clove garlic, minced 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger 1 head green cabbage, halved and sliced into thin ribbons 2 carrots, grated 6 green onions (white and light-green parts only), cut into thin rounds 1/2 cup minced fresh cilantro   RED POTATO SALAD 2 pounds small red potatoes, halved 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon red or white wine vinegar 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 clove garlic, minced 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1⁄8 teaspoon chipotle pepper flakes (optional) Salt and freshly ground pepper 1/2 cup diced red bell pepper 6 green onions (white parts only), cut into thin rounds   1. Prepare the flanken: Sprinkle the brown sugar on both sides of the beef strips and set aside. In a glass or nonreactive bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, vinegar, both sesame oils, garlic, ginger, and green onions. Place the meat in a large zip-seal plastic bag. Pour the marinade over the meat and gently squeeze the bag to expel any excess air. Seal the bag and turn it over several times to cover all the meat with the marinade. Place the bag on a plate (in case it leaks) and refrigerate for 6 to 8 hours, flipping the bag every 2 hours or so.   2. While the meat is still marinating, make the coleslaw: In small glass bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, vinegar, both sesame oils, lime juice, garlic, and ginger. Place the sliced cabbage, carrots, and green onions in a large bowl. Pour the dressing over the cabbage mixture and toss gently. Add the cilantro and toss again. (The slaw can be made in advance and stored in the refrigerator for several hours. For best results, remove it from the fridge 1 hour prior to eating and allow it to return to room temperature.)   3. Make the potato salad: In a large pot, bring 3 to 4 inches of water to a boil over high heat. Add the potatoes, reduce the heat to a gentle boil, and simmer until the potatoes are tender enough to be poked easily with a fork, about 20 minutes. Drain the potatoes in a colander and rinse with cold water. Let the potatoes dry thoroughly in the colander.   4. While the potatoes are cooking, prepare their dressing. In a large bowl, whisk together the olive oil, vinegar, mustard, and garlic. Add the thyme, chipotle pepper flakes (if using), and 1/8 teaspoon salt and whisk again.   5. Add the potatoes and bell peppers to the bowl and toss gently to coat evenly. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Sprinkle the green onions on top as garnish. Set aside or refrigerate until ready to serve. (As with the slaw, the potato salad is best at room temperature.)   6. Preheat the grill. Remove the meat from the marinade and place directly onto the grill grates. Cook about 2 minutes per side for medium-rare. Serve hot off the grill with the slaw and potato salad on the side.   ###     CHILE CHOCOLATE SOUFFLÉ   Dairy | Serves 6   This bittersweet chocolate dessert may come at the end of a meal, but it steals the show. The chocolate is dark and rich, but the texture is light. Inside, a soft, hot, lava-like core can be found. You’ll love the surprise finish—a subtle kick from the cayenne pepper.   If you want to serve these soufflés fresh out of the oven to dinner guests, make the batter in advance. Fill the ramekins, cover with plastic wrap, and store in the refrigerator until ready to use or for up to 4 hours. Remove the ramekins from the refrigerator 5 minutes prior to baking.   We don’t recommend any wine here. Let the dessert shine on its own!   9 ounces bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped 1-1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, plus more for the ramekins 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder 2 sticks (8 ounces) unsalted butter, at room temperature, plus 2 tablespoons for the ramekins 1⁄3 cup granulated sugar 5 eggs Powdered sugar, for dusting   1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.   2. Melt the chocolate in a double boiler, stirring until smooth. (If you don’t have a double boiler, fill a medium saucepan with 2 inches of water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and keep the water at a low simmer. Place the chocolate in a medium heatproof bowl—slightly larger at its top than the width of the saucepan; too large in diameter to descend into the water. Set the bowl with the chocolate inside the saucepan suspended over the hot water, but do not let the water touch the bowl. Stir to melt.) Stir in the cinnamon, cayenne, and vanilla until thoroughly blended. Remove the pot from the stove, but keep over the hot water so the chocolate stays soft.   3. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, whisk together the 1/4 cup flour and baking powder. In a large bowl, with an electric mixer, cream together the 2 sticks butter and the granulated sugar until the mixture is pale yellow, about 1 minute. Add the eggs one at a time and continue to mix until all the ingredients are blended, about 1 minute. Add the flour/baking powder mixture to the egg mixture and blend thoroughly. (The batter will be a little lumpy, but it will smooth out when the chocolate is added.)   4. Whisk the melted chocolate into the batter until smooth, about 30 seconds.   5. Lightly coat the insides of six 4-inch-wide (4-ounce) ramekins with the 2 tablespoons of butter. Dust the surface of each ramekin with 1 teaspoon of flour. Turn each ramekin upside down and gently tap to remove excess flour. Set aside.   6. Using a large spoon or a measuring cup, fill each ramekin three-fourths full. Smooth the top of each soufflé with a rubber spatula. Gently tap the bottom of each filled ramekin to help settle the batter.   7. Place the ramekins on a baking sheet and bake until the soufflés have risen about 1/2 inch above the edge of each dish, about 15 minutes. The top of each soufflé will have split open and will be crunchy.   8. Remove the ramekins from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Dust the top of each soufflé with powdered sugar and serve immediately.

California/Mediterranean/Israeli kosher By balaboosta An accessible cookbook for home cooks who just happen to keep kosher with an emphasis on Mediterranean ingredients and flavors. Includes useful and relevant information about the kosher laws of food and wine and helpful suggestions for wine pairings. Novel but non-intimidating takes on traditional Jewish cuisine and the use of the characteristic flavors of the South of France, California and Israel - flanken pot-au-feu, chile chocolate soufflé and lavender panna cotta, anyone? - distinguish the selection of recipes. Love the emphasis on fresh ingredients and simple techniques. Beautifully photographed.

Hansel and Gretel, even in it's original form, is not so much a fairytale as a horror tale, but this version really takes things to the next level. Coleman's contemporary retelling and atmospheric setting really set the tone for the chills to follow. Definitely a creepy story, and one that kept me engaged from the first page to the last. I read this in one setting!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. a very well written, thought provoking story By Amazon Customer The descriptions brought the landscapes and characters to life and the narrative provided some nice (surprising) twists and turns. Also found myself considering parallels with current society given some of the thought provoking concepts and scenarios. I thoroughly enjoyed Gretel, highly recommend it, and can imagine this would make a great movie!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Dark fairy tale By H. Grove (errantdreams) The setting is ambiguous. The area in which it’s set feels low-tech. There are no ubiquitous cell phones, and if you want to visit your neighbors you’d best bring your canoe. On the other hand, when a representative of “The System” comes to call in response to Anika’s disappearance, the car turns out to be heavily computerized. It’s an odd duality, a story that’s somewhat unmoored in time and space. I’m a little ambiguous in my feelings toward it. It’s a tad confusing, but it does somehow evoke a bit of that ‘adrift in time and space’ feeling that some fairy tales project. My favorite part of this story is the characters. From Gretel’s bed-bound father, to her grandfather (who’s been hiding something), the officer from the System and his own kid, Petr–the characters have a ton of life and drive to them. This is also one of the best collections of strong female characters that I’ve seen in a long time. They aren’t abnormally perfect–they’re just used to having to rely on themselves and each other (or they’re just starting to learn how much it would help if they did so).For a story that relates itself to such a strong and well-known fairy tale, Gretel does it beautifully. There’s enough here to make the comparison, but it tears off in its own directions as well. I fully enjoyed Coleman’s story.

"Young people need someone who is crazy about them." – Walter Brueggemann “Originally authored by Francis Clark a hundred years ago, Ashley Denton has overhauled the first writing, taking care to update and revise the text to make it more readable for a modern audience of young people. The book will be especially helpful to youth pastors, student ministry leaders and parents of young people.” –Robert E. Coleman (Author of Master Plan of Evangelism) “Francis Clark believed that Jesus was the embodiment of everything that young people longed for. The challenge of every generation is simply to give young people an accurate picture of Jesus Christ. Clark believed that if young people could just see the winsome personality of Christ, they would naturally be drawn to him, like a magnet is to metal.” –Ashley Denton

The Personality of Jesus: How to Introduce Young People to Jesus Christ and Help them Grow in Their Faith, by Francis E. Clark

About the Author Francis Edward Clark (1851-1927) founded the Young People's Society of Christian Endeavor in 1881. It grew worldwide into an influential student evangelism movement with more than 3,500,000 members at the height of its influence in the early 1900s. His book, Christ and the Young People (written in 1916) was one of the first youth ministry books ever written. Ashley Denton (editor) resides in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA. With a doctorate in Missions and Cross Cultural Studies from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary he has trained student ministry leaders from over 50 countries. He is currently the Vice President of Nexus International, serves as a volunteer missions pastor at Mountain View Community Church, and was formerly on staff with Young Life for 15 years, serving as their National Director in New Zealand. He is also a professor at Denver Theological Seminary. Ashley is the author of: Christian Outdoor Leadership: Theology, Theory, and Practice, which is a practical resource for how to use adventure and camping as an effective tool for evangelism and discipleship with students. He blogs regularly on international youth and family ministry at ashleydenton.com, and on outdoor adventure & camping ministries at outdoorleaders.com.

By Brian Harvey “The Personality of Jesus” is a little book compared to many on my shelves, but its lack of size does not mean it lacks substance. Denton’s reworking of an old book helps to bring new life and a new audience to a book that, sadly, has been forgotten. The premise of the book is that young people are naturally attracted to Jesus; that his personality makes him someone worth knowing. It would be hard to argue against this when you read how Jesus is described in this book. With fourteen chapters in less than 100 pages, you know the chapters are going to be short. Each chapter also has a number of questions for reflection. This helps to make the book something that can be easily shared with a small group of teenagers, or a group of youth leaders in your church. Having said that, I don’t think this book should be considered to be exclusively for ministry to youth. Anyone who is wanting to learn something of Jesus will find this book helpful. Naturally it won’t tell you everything about Jesus, but it will give you some important insights into him.I have known Jesus for over forty years, and have been teaching people about Jesus for well-over twenty, but reading this little book has made me see some things clearer. The humility of Jesus is a stand out aspect of his personality that this book has shone a bright light on.I’m pleased that I read this book. I hope many others will read it too.

A "Handbook" of the personality traits of Jesus By Jay Denton Cruising through this easy-to-read, updated version by Ashley Denton was an enjoyable tour of the personality characteristics of Jesus that I appreciated having distilled in this format. Every once in a while - but not often enough - a seminal work connects the dots from a variety of viewpoints into what can be called a "handbook", and this book does just that. As a fitting tribute to the 100 year anniversary of the original writing, and knowing firsthand about Ashley's calling and noteworthy success in leading youth ministry around the world, I can't help but think that if Francis Clark were alive today, he would find in Denton and Robert Coleman (Master Plan of Evangelism) two contemporaries cut from the same cloth. With four children of my own - two teenagers and two recent "ex-teens", I fully agree that the key personality traits describing Jesus are those that resonate with our youth. Authenticity, approachability, humility, courage, enthusiasm, commitment, etc... they are what draw impressionable young people looking for role models to people living out those traits in their daily lives. This book is great reinforcement and a quick, handy reminder (for those of us who need frequent reminding) that proclaiming to be a Christian means following Jesus' example - and this is what it looks like.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Add to Your Youth Ministry Curriculum By Arthur D. Canales,D.Min., Associate Professor A nice little exposition about Jesus of Nazareth, but with a contemporary "twist" to engage and empower adolescents. It is a good book for any youth minister or high school theology/religion teacher to read and implement into their curriculum. The book does an excellent job of presenting the various attributes of Jesus of Nazareth as an approachable historical and present-day person. I think this book could be best used in various settings and programs within a comprehensive youth ministry: as a supplement to a Bible study, as part of a Christology curriculum, and a way to introduce early adolescent to the person of Jesus. One of the advantages of integrating Denton's work into young people's lives is to discuss the questions at the end of each chapter. I enjoyed this book quite a bit.

Biblical Ethics / The Moral Foundations of Life / The Philosophy of Sin: Ethical Principles for the Christian Life, by Oswald Chambers

From the Back Cover

Oswald Chambers was, above all else, a teacher of spiritual truths. Now, in this 3-in-1 volume, you have timeless counsel for today’s Christians from the author of the classic devotional My Utmost for His Highest. In BIBLICAL ETHICS you’ll be reminded that the ultimate aim of Christ’s atonement is that God may readjust humanity to Himself. This calls for a moral response on our part, involving thought, feeling, and will that fl esh out the ethical principles of the Christian faith. THE MORAL FOUNDATIONS OF LIFE takes you deep below the surface of everyday life where the foundations for the faith-fi lled life are laid. Chambers’ instruction in righteousness sheds the blazing light of Scripture on the dim regions of the soul. In THE PHILOSOPHY OF SIN, Chambers helps you understand what is wrong with humanity. Sin breaks hearts, spoils lives, and crushes human potential. And sin can only be put right through Christ’s atonement, which makes possible human repentance and appropriation of faith. “I have found in this book some of the most arresting truths I have yet met with.” – From the Foreword by David Lambert

About the Author Oswald Chambers (1874-1917) is best known for the classic devotional My Utmost for His Highest. Born in Scotland, Chambers had a teaching and preaching ministry that took him as far the United States and Japan. He died at age forty-three while serving as chaplain to British Commonwealth troops in Egypt during World War I.

Owens Like every book from Oswald Chambers, be prepared for Biblical Ethics to hit you right between the eyes! In my lifetime the term ethics has had so many qualifiers added to it -* situational ethics...* biomedical ethics...* wartime ethics......as though ethics becomes something changeable if you are in a difficult situation. But in clear, unequivocal language, Oswald Chambers brings all ethics back to the Bible.Keying in most frequently on the teachings of Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount, Chambers helps us get to the true intention behind the ethical requirements of God's Law. For any who would say, "But it's too hard to figure out what Jesus actually meant," Chambers replies, "When we come across something we don't like, we say we don't understand it; it is too plain not to be understood."This is not light reading, but it is valuable reading. Serious disciples of Christ will be well-rewarded by reading and studying the wisdom in Biblical Ethics.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Sound biblical teaching. By Chris L The works of Oswald Chambers should be read and considered by all Christians. The writings set forth by Chambers, as compiled in this book, are sound and compelling, and biblically supported. In a world of progressing regression into ungodly teachings and behavior, this compilation is a must read for any and all who are followers of Christ or just seeking to live a life worthy of Christ.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A pearl of great value! By Methusaleh While Chambers is most noted for his devotional "My Utmost for His Highest", this book(s) delves into the foundational substance of his theology. The titles can sound intimidating, yet Chambers brings them to an easily understood level. The depth of his thinking on such weighty matters was amazing to me. Reading this will, I believe, only enhance your appreciation of the the daily snippets you get in his devotional, which only scratch the surface.Highly reccommended!

‘Could very well be tomorrow’s headlines’ Clive Cussler Flying, fighting and dying, with a little loving on the side, Colonel Matt Pontowski is on a UN peacekeeping mission in South Africa. In his legendary wing he attempts to save the country from turning into a tribal bloodbath. Caught in the chaos of political collapse and a nuclear race, South Africa has become dangerously unstable and the atmosphere is hostile. White radicals have discovered the secret of cold nuclear fusion and are carving out their own nation in the growing political shambles. Suddenly the world is an alarmingly more dangerous place when super powers ally themselves with the warring factions. Nerve gas incidents, torture and callous murders are widespread regular occurrences. Soon Matt’s own men are among the casualties and innocent people are at the mercy of maniacs. When the United Nations intervenes, America’s national security advisor sends in a fledgling composite air wing under Matt Pontowski to support the UN mission. Before long Matt is thrust into the perilous realm of covert operations as he recalls the death of his beautiful Israeli wife Shoshana and the son he has left at home. In the midst of bureaucrats and misplaced loyalties Matt begins to question his role in the mission. Has let himself become a pawn in somebody else’s game? Iron Gate is a gripping novel of daring combat and heroic exploits featuring Colonel Matt Pontowski.

Iron Gate, by Richard Herman

From Publishers Weekly The topical perils of a U.N. peacekeeping mission are plunked down in the middle of South Africa as USAF Col. Mat Pontowski, the dashing hero of Herman's previous books (Dark Wing, etc.), is once again pressed into his government's service. Helped by an Israeli scientist, a bunch of revanchist Afrikaners who pine for the salad days of apartheid are in possession of the secret of cold fusion, which means they're in possession of nukes. Civil War threatens South Africa, the U.N. sends in the blue helmets and the U.S. sends Matt and his Warthogs (A-10 aircraft). Matt, a man of action, has to get things done despite diplomatic dithering, UN impotence and all those damn bureaucrats and pesky journalists who get in his way. Herman helpfully reminds us of past events (the death of Matt's Israeli wife and the need to be an attentive father to his young son), and he plants the seeds for a new love (Sam the camera woman) and the sad demise of an old friend. The air combat scenes are exciting and vivid, but the story itself is predictable and the characters stock. The book succeeds on its own terms, however, as Herman wraps two eternal battles?good guys against bad guys, heroes against bumbling suits and brass?into a rousing, serial-style adventure. Unlike Tom Clancy, (who slow down the actions with too much tech-data), Richard Herman does not waste too much time to bring the readers right into the actions. The flow of the story is smooth and the writer keeps readers interested at all times. I would recommand reading Dark Wing before reading Iron Gate (although the story is not as smooth, it gives you more information about the main characters).

The only problem I have with Herman is that he kills off his main characters (eg., Muddy Waters and Jack Locke). I am presently reading Iron Gate and cannot put it down. Keep up the good work Mr. Herman!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Intense By A Customer Every bit as intense as the new WWII airwar novel I just read, "The Triumph and the Glory", and as action-packed as any of Clancy's best, "Iron Gate" is a super book, I was very impressed with it.

What difference does the Spirit make in the life of Jesus and in our lives? Answering that question without doing away with the divine dignity of Christ has been a challenge in the distant and recent past. But this need not be the case. The current work is a contribution to the growing field of Spirit Christology, which seeks to enrich the classic Logos Christology of the ecumenical Councils with a Spirit-oriented trajectory. Sánchez tests the productivity of a Spirit Christology as a theological lens for assessing the main events of Jesus' life and mission, accounts of the atonement, the significance of the incarnation, the concepts of person and relation, and models of the Trinity. Seeing Christ as the privileged locus of the Spirit also has implications for the church's life in the Spirit. Sánchez shows how a Spirit Christology fosters Christian practices such as proclamation, prayer, and sanctification. Among the highlights of this work the reader will note the author's assessment of early church fathers' readings of the place of the Spirit in the anointing of Jesus, a constructive proposal towards the complementarity of Logos and Spirit Christologies, ecumenical engagement with various theological traditions in the East and the West, and the first constructive assessment of the field informed by the Lutheran tradition.

Receiver, Bearer, and Giver of God's Spirit: Jesus' Life in the Spirit as a Lens for Theology and Life, by Leopoldo A. Sánchez M.

Review ''Sánchez has written a bold, insightful, and substantial book on Jesus' relation to the Spirit as a paradigm for spirituality and ecclesiology. This work by a Lutheran Latino scholar shows the breadth and applicability of a trinitarian Spirit Christology and delivers on the promised theme of showing Jesus as the receiver, bearer, and giver of the Spirit. The way Sánchez applies this theology to proclamation, prayer, and sanctification is especially insightful and welcome.''--Myk Habets, Lecturer of Systematic Theology, Carey Baptist College''Leo Sánchez proposes a Spirit Christology rooted in the Scriptural testimony, consistent with the Church's ancient confession, and rich in implications for the Christian life. Readers will find faithful but long-neglected ways to conceive of Christ and come away with insights to think anew about preaching, prayer, and theology.''--Joel P. Okamoto, Associate Professor of Systematic Theology, Concordia Seminary --Wipf and Stock Publishers

About the Author Leopoldo A. Sánchez M. is Associate Professor of Systematic Theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, where he holds the Werner R. H. and Elizabeth Ringger Krause Chair for Hispanic Ministries and is Director of the Center for Hispanic Studies. He is the author of Pneumatología (2005) and Teología de la santificación (2013).

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Stimulating Read By Bradley A. Smith Dr. Sanchez has written a very special book. He offers us another way to think about the Trinity, Christology, and life in the church. He offers "Spirit-Christology" as a complementary perspective to the Logos-Christology with which many of us are more familiar. The result is a lively picture of Christ as truly human, sharing with us the Spirit who works in Him. The last three chapters address Spirit-Christology's application to the life of the church in her praying, preaching, and day-to-day life. The greatest compliment that I can give this book is that it 1) has help broaden my pastoral counsel and preaching, 2) has led me into further study on Trinitarian and Christological theology, and 3) has become a re-read resource in my library. Thanks, Dr. Sanchez!

The delicious Italian-American comfort food we all remember, love, and crave, from the owners of the legendary Artichoke Pizza.Authors Fran and Sal are two regular guys from the neighborhood, cousins and best friends, whose DNA reads garlic and oil (they're fifth generation in the food business) and whose six hugely successful restaurants, starting with the legendary Artichoke Pizza, have impressed critics, fellow chefs, and chowhounds alike. They have written a book celebrating big flavor, along with loving (and hilarious) family stories, and rooted in the great Italian-American tradition, handed down through the generations. The recipes are unfussy...simple and fast for school nights, fancier for weekends and holidays and offer readers a transporting, full-bodied take-away, rather than just a book about spaghetti and meatballs. Here you will find Eggs Pizziaola, Pork Cutlets with Hot Peppers and Vinegar, their famous Cauliflower Fritters, and many more authentic dishes served up with gusto.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Wow! Now that is some flavor! By M. Carpenter The recipes I have tried thus far are excellent. The flavor in these is very rich and full. When I say rich, I mean RICH! This is no lean meal recipe book, but I think anyone looking at this will know that. I am not Italian, or from the northeast, but it certainly seems like these are authentic in nature. By the photos included, it certainly seems that they all eat like this their whole lives! The stories and background on the recipes enhances this book immensely. You will learn how to make a great "cooked sauce" and by golly you will know how three generations created that recipe. I like it.I will say that there is a downside to this book, which is why I docked it a star. The recipes are giant. You have to really pay attention to the portion sizes on each recipe and plan accordingly. I started making a pot of cooked sauce and realized that I do not even own a pot big enough! Geez!In addition and quite the annoyance is the fact that these recipes jump around a lot. Most recipes involve multiple components, which have their own recipes. If you truly want to stick to the recipe, a lot of prep planning and digesting of multiple recipes is needed. An example is the glorious meatballs. You have 3-4 layers of recipes to follow. Breadcrumbs...cooked sauce...etc. It is not a big deal if you plan properly, but my first use of the book resulted in multiple spoiled pages with sauce and stains. In short, be prepared for a bit of planning, lots of ingredients, great food and to feed a lot of people!!

Recipes sound wonderful and "down to earth"! I am anxious to try some of them! I was inspired to buy the book after one of the fellow's appearance on The Chew!
