17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. A diverse set of recipes that are attainable, healthy and delicious, just beware the tight spine makes pages hard to access! By Reviews on Amazon After seeing some of the dishes featured inside this book in several magazines I subscribe to; as well as the rather detailed search feature on the Amazon preview page I decided to go ahead and make the purchase. It is a beautiful book filled with superb pictures and recipes I have tried and others I cannot wait to try; however I had to knock off a star from a practicality stance. The book is long and not as wide as most traditional cookbooks, but that leaves the spine tight and as soon as you get a few pages in, the book becomes hard to open and the pages hard to read. It is difficult to open enough to read the inner text; and in order to use it you either have to copy the pages or use a weight of some sort to prop it open which is a nuisance! The book beings with a look at the food philosophy of the authors then delves into start the day, soups and salads, hearty mains, and good and sweet, ending with a menu planner! I like the fact this is basic and does not have multiple chapters on various dish types! The philosophy section indicates that the premise is food that not only tastes good, but is good for you - low calorie (and note a lot of it is very low in calories indeed), enzyme rich, low gluten, sugar free using organic in season produce. It goes on to talk in detail about foods that are organic, whole foods, gluten free; before looking at the properties of various fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds and fermented foods which is a great feature. The breakfast section really has something for everyone ranging from a homemade granola , sweet potat0 muffins , the ever popular avocado toast, various smoothies, or my favorite as it is both simple to make and delicious - the blistered tomato and spinach scramble . It is also worth noting that this book does detail calories, fat, carbs, fiber, protein, sodium and vitamin / mineral content of each meal which is great for those with various dietary restrictions. The soup and salad portion is diverse with items such as a basic tomato and basil soup to the more adventurous sea vegetable soup; and the salads are superb using fresh produce in an easy to prepare manner. We tried their take on caprese with cashew chevre which even with 2 steps - one for the chevre and one to compose the salad was still easy enough for me who is a self professed mediocre cook! There are some great quinoa salads and the ranch detox salad is a simple lunch idea. The mains are also very diverse; and also unique. All too often healthier cookbooks all seem to have their versions of various meals that are not new and appealing; but this stands alone for example : cauliflower steaks and gremolata or the lentil and whole beet stew with rosemary and red onion; there are pasta dishes, risotto, veggie meat loaf, a meze platter with all the components. So many great choices! Finally the good and sweet includes kale chips, ice cream and ice pops, poached pears or chocolate bark; even a chocolate mousse featuring hemp hearts as opposed to the usual take involving avocados. It is worth noting for those that like desserts that this section is very small in comparison to the rest. The ending featuring the meal planner has three weeks of meal plans, that are very low calorie ranging from 1022 to 1418 calories a day ; offering a great option for those who are counting calories. This is truly a great book, that does not require a pantry filled with peculiar ingredients that can only be found at a health food store (there are a few recipes that require special ingredient but with emphasis on "few"); it is based around in season , easy to find produce. The pictures are beautiful and inspiring; and best of all, this is not overly complicated or fussy! If I can make these than anyone can!If you can get past the fact that this book is difficult to manage in terms of the rigid spine and having to prop it open; it is an excellent book with a diverse set of recipes that are attainable, healthy and from the few that I have tried -delicious!

- Affirmative Consent Laws - “This book contains an up to the minute, and thorough discussion of the 'affirmative consent' laws passed in California” - John Davis, BA, JD, LLM (Author) This book is a quick study for sexually active men, for men who are in constant contact with women in work or social environments, and, for men going to college. Studies indicate that over 60% of accusations of rape, that women make against men, are false. There are no known cases of men falsely accusing a woman of rape. Women make false accusations of rape against men most commonly for the following reasons: 1. To extort money from the man 2. To gain attention 3. Revenge 4. To coverup sexual activity with someone else The book is written by a noted former prosecutor who has prosecuted rape and sexual assault cases. It is designed to be a quick guide to inform men, and especially male college students, of the hazards of dating in an age of feminist rape hysteria. The book explores the current climate that encourages women to falsely accuse men of rape, and the dynamics which reward women for falsely accusing men of rape. The book offers some insightful and practical means of avoiding false accusations of rape for sexually active men of all ages.

8 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Every Man's Pocket Guide to Life and Liberty By Stanley Rains We have entered a deadly and dangerous time for men. We are hunted as a prize for the self-aggrandizement of any woman who wants attention, sympathy, to live out a rape fantasy, or for even more dark and sinister reasons. Due process is denied men in the face of even the most ludicrous or impossible allegation. Allegations can come from third parties and be just as dangerous. Men can be denied access to even the allegation, denied the right to question witnesses or even the complainant. Decisions can be made in secret with secret data. Lives are destroyed.“How To Avoid False Allegations of Rape” is a must read for any man involved with women whether intimate relations, at work, school, or even in your marriage. It is the relationship primer every young pubescent male should receive as they enter a life differentiated from their parents. It is a deadly serious topic for all males of all ages in this Brave New World. This book is a road map through dangerous territory. It provides basic information on the types of women to avoid. He addresses what some of those disturbed women’s motivations are. John Davis describes the methods used to entrap; the laws and source of the political impetus behind the current pogrom against men. He suggests what can be done to protect from false rape allegations. And, finally Mr. Davis provides good sound advice on what to do if you become a victim of one of these numerous predatory women.Mr. Davis has written a survivalist manual for males of all ages as they tiptoe through the minefield of society's rules, laws, and attitudes that have been subverted to support the extreme misandry of radical feminism. John nails it.

4 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A great standout for justice! By Timothy G. Patten An important book that can help men. There is an epidemic in our country of women yelling rape! But they are simply lying in order to hurt a man and men in general, usually vindictively. Women are even being coached by feminists to claim rape, physical abuse and even child abuse against men, they once claimed they loved. When women fight, they fight with intention to hurt emotionally. And that pain runs deep, but when men hurt no one cares.

Review “Crackles with superb writing, brilliant performances and snappy direction, and does it all while somehow managing to be oddly faithful to the original source material.” (San Francisco Chronicle)“Not just another Sherlock Holmes . . . a strange, fascinating, and sometimes brilliant contemporary take on the father of forensic crime-solving.” (Boston Globe)“A sharp, funny, clever series that remains faithful to the spirit of Doyle’s stories while infusing them with a vibrant spirit of modernity.” (USA Today)“Deftly straddles the material’s literary essence and the dictates of modern-day entertainment, trading fog and gaslight for a sleek 21st century London that’s equal parts gloss and grit.” (The Hollywood Reporter)

By JMM [[VIDEOID:137ff56e769d11946b02939c398a7a33]]The BBC's "Sherlock" television series is my favorite on-screen version of the detective, and it's great to have a book like this which celebrates the show. "Sherlock Chronicles" takes an in-depth look into the first three seasons. It has just about everything you'd want in a book like this - including profiles of the cast/characters and information about the show itself as well as the production. The book begins with a Foreword by Mark Gatiss (plays the role of Mycroft and also a writer for the series) and a brief introduction about the series. After that, each chapter corresponds to one episode of the show. There is a lot of interesting information about the making of the series, all compiled in a very pleasing layout with plenty of high-quality photographs. Below is a detailed list of the things you can find in the book:- The "Series Bible" written by the showrunners.- How the writers draw from the history of Doyle's novels.- The original BBC press release announcing the show.- Casting the series leads, with complete filmography of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.- Casting Andrew Scott as Moriarty; Lara Pulver as Irene Adler; and other supporting characters- "Holmes from Holmes" segments, which compare the screenplay to pages from the books.- Deleted Scenes from the scripts.- Constructing and designing the 221B Baker Street interior.- Profile on composer David Arnold and his great music for the show.- Discussion about editing the show- Dozens of on-location photos- Concept art and visual effects work on the Hound- Breakdowns of key scenes, including the Reichenbach Fall.- Storyboard sequence for Sherlock's fall.- Graphic design for the show, including the newspapers/headlines and text on screen.- John & Mary's Wedding Album- Full Episode listings (incl. cast/crew, duration, air date, and audience numbers)If you are a fan of the series, then you're really going to want to read this. "Sherlock Chronicles" gets my highest recommendation.

By Mike O'Connor Steve Tribe's SHERLOCK CHRONICLES is a fun, fascinating guide to the hit BBC series on history's most famous - and beloved - fictional detective. Stylishly written, it's brimming with fascinating details about the show's development and production, first-hand reminiscences by cast and crew along with tons of color and b&w photographs and illustrations. A 2014 Dey Street release, it should prove catnip to SHERLOCK fans of all ages.Tribe's book takes the reader from the show's origins courtesy of co-creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat through Series Three. It's fascinating to read how the show evolved, how the different roles were cast, bios of the different actors, production details, graphics and visual effects, music and so on. The book is jam-packed with sidebars including deleted scenes and side-by-side comparisons of Doyle's original text versus the dialogue from the companion show. The many personal comments by Gatiss, Moffat, Cumberbatch, Freeman, Stubbs and other production members are especially enlightening. SHERLOCK CHRONICLES is one fun read!In short, SHERLOCK is just about as entertaining as the show itself. Tribe's book is a lively, well-illustrated, 'behind-the-scenes' history of and guide to the latest re-imagining of Doyle's classic character. Highly recommended.

In the Mormon community of Draper, Utah, seemingly perfect families have deadly secrets. Linda Wallheim is a devout Mormon, the mother of five boys and the wife of a bishop. But Linda is increasingly troubled by her church’s structure and secrecy, especially as a disturbing situation takes shape in her ward. One cold winter night, a young wife and mother named Carrie Helm disappears, leaving behind everything she owns. Carrie’s husband, Jared, claims his wife has always been unstable and that she has abandoned the family, but Linda doesn’t trust him. As Linda snoops in the Helm family’s circumstances, she becomes convinced that Jared has murdered his wife and painted himself as a wronged husband.Linda’s husband asks her not to get involved in the unfolding family saga. But Linda has become obsessed with Carrie’s fate, and with the well-being of her vulnerable young daughter. She cannot let the matter rest until she finds out the truth. Is she wrong to go against her husband, the bishop, when her inner convictions are so strong?Inspired by a chilling true crime and written by a practicing Mormon, The Bishop’s Wife is both a fascinating look at the lives of modern Mormons as well as a grim and cunningly twisted mystery. From the Hardcover edition.

Review Praise for The Bishop's WifeA National BestsellerAn ABA IndieNext Selection for January 2015An ABA IndieBound BestsellerA PLA LibraryReads Selection for January 2015A Publishers Weekly Most Anticipated Book of Fall 2014“The Bishop’s Wife has good reason to draw a large readership. It places heavy emphasis on domestic abuse and on the question of how dangerous fire-breathing extremists really are. The man who inveighs against women as whores and sinners may or may not be anything worse than a crank. The man who speaks sanctimoniously of them may be much worse . . . That’s why Ms. Harrison’s Linda is such a welcome character: In her role as Sister Wallheim, she encourages women to speak freely, at least to her, and to escape the shame that has burdened some of them since childhood."—Janet Maslin, The New York Times"Sane, wise, likable . . . [The] solution is nicely surprising, and Linda has an engrossing voice, at once modest and assured."—Charles Finch, USA Today"Excellent . . . Watching Linda Wallheim take on the church and its entitled male members as she unravels the mystery of Carrie's and Helena's disappearances is one of the chief pleasures of this richly detailed debut." —Los Angeles Times “Critically acclaimed author Mette Ivie Harrison's mystery debut is an insider's nuanced look at the workings of the Mormon church. Beautifully written, and spellbinding in its unflinching examination of marriage, family and faith, The Bishop's Wife is an absolute must-read!”—Julia Spencer-Fleming, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Through the Evil Days"Eye-opening . . . A novel so far from my reality I needed a telescope, but I think that's why I enjoyed this debut so much."—Carole E. Barrowman, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel"Intelligent and wry. In Linda’s dealings with her husband’s flock, author Mette Ivie Harrison gives us a rare neutral treatment of Mormonism . . . Refreshing." —The Raleigh News & Observer"Poses interesting questions about community in scenes that unfold against local backdrops."—The Salt Lake City Tribune"A novel so far from my reality I needed a telescope, but I think that’s why I liked it . . .  Gives an insider’s view of a patriarchal community where strict adherence to God’s rule is the path to an afterlife (with a similar patriarchy). While investigating the disappearance of a neighbor, Linda confronts the sins of her community." —Minneapolis Star Tribune"[The] Linda Wallheim novels are worth reading, and not only for their uncompromising plot lines and compelling conclusions. They should raise important and necessary questions about Mormonism itself in every thinking Mormon’s mind." —Association for Mormon Letters “Set against the unusual backdrop of a tight-knit Mormon congregation, The Bishop’s Wife is both a terrific crime novel and a wrenching story of faith, doubt, and personal tragedy.”—Michael Wallace, Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author of The Righteous“Don't be deceived by the unassuming heroine and quiet start of The Bishop's Wife. In this gripping and contemplative mystery, a woman who most people would identify as living an ordinary life discovers she is the only one willing to pursue a dangerous puzzle. As she uncovers layers of deceit she struggles to remain true to her deeply courageous self.” —Kate Elliott, bestselling author of the Spiritwalker Trilogy"Harrison has an eye like a Nikon camera and an educated ear. I was amazed at her perfect pitch in her choice of words and gestures . . . Her book will do well nationally. It may even spawn a series of mysteries starring the bold and benevolent bishop’s wife. But will the book be too tart for conventional LDS tastes?" —The Deseret News"As the author offers insight into the patriarchal structure of the Mormon Church, readers also are introduced to a strong woman who strives to bring justice to those who are wronged."—Missourian"A great mystery . . . A novel that’s well worth reading, either all night long or during a particularly boring Sacrament meeting."—Standard-Examiner"With a plot that is ripped from the headlines and an insightful look into Mormon culture, The Bishop's Wife is the perfect combination of mystery and intrigue."—Bookreporter.com"A bit like an Agatha Christie mystery: a missing woman, a detestable husband, and a little girl caught in the balance . . . The Bishop’s Wife takes readers behind the glossy exterior of the Mormon Church and directly into the Bishop’s private—and not-so-private—home and office." —Salt Lake Magazine"A very intriguing and captivating mystery . . . [I] just wanted to read it without stopping." —Fresh Fiction "Harrison carefully crafts the clues to lead organically to a big plot twist and a change in direction later in the book that feels earned and believable. Not every writer is skilled enough to pull that off!" —Unshelved "Even without the two mysteries the book would have been an interesting read as readers follow Linda's struggles with her faith . . . Because of the broader scope of this book, I would strongly recommend the book for book groups—the discussions could last a lifetime."—Reviewing the Evidence"I highly recommend The Bishop’s Wife as a great work of women’s fiction. It would be an excellent choice for a book club as Mette Ivie Harrison digs deep into issues that face all women providing substantial material for discussion."—Luxury Reading"Do not avoid reading this book because you fear being bogged down by theological rambling. You won't be. Instead you'll be drawn into a story about a very interesting woman whose conscience will not let her stand idly by. Like so many other characters in crime fiction, Linda will not rest until she's found the truth." —Kittling Books"One of those stories you can’t stop reading until you find out what happens next . . . Harrison weaves a tale of deception and treachery that takes the reader on a twisting and mysterious path."—Oceana Herald-Journal“A wonderfully written mystery . . . The Bishop’s Wife is not only a great story, but a revealing look at Mormonism and its followers.”—New York Journal of Books"Harrison makes her adult debut with a stunning contemporary mystery set in Mormon country . . . [She] easily transports readers into a world most will find as unfamiliar as a foreign country."—Publishers Weekly, STARRED Review"The mystery surrounding Carrie drives the plot, but Linda herself is the most compelling thing about young adult author Harrison’s debut adult mystery about a world she knows well." —Booklist, STARRED Review"Adds twists aplenty to an insider's look at a religion replete with its own mysteries."—Kirkus Reviews"A novel that is comfortable with leaving us uncomfortable. Or, rather, that manages to leave us comfortable in our discomfort. Which is to say that I found The Bishop’s Wife an honest book."—A Motley Vision"Turns a critical eye toward some long-held norms of a historically patriarchal religion. Throw in a wickedly twisted mystery—actually, two—and you have the makings of a page-turner that is revealing and thought-provoking."—The Hutchinson NewsFrom the Hardcover edition.

Chapter 1   Mormon bishop’s wife isn’t an official calling. “Bishop’s wife” isn’t a position listed on ward documents; there’s no ceremonial laying-on of hands or pronounced blessings from on high. But if the bishop is the father of the ward, the bishop’s wife is the mother, and that meant there were five hundred people who were under my care. I was used to the phone calls in the middle of the night, to the doorbell ringing far too late and far too early. I was used to being looked past, because I was never the person that they were there to see.          This morning at the six thirty doorbell, I shook Kurt. “They’ll be wanting the bishop,” I said. I was already out of bed and putting on my robe.         “I’ll be there as soon as I can, Linda,” he said sleepily. He hadn’t been to bed before midnight last night, I was sure. I hurried downstairs, sure that something terrible had happened. It was late January in Draper, Utah, and as picturesque as the snow on the mountains was, it did not mix well with our modern lifestyle. My fear as I stood hesitating at the door was that someone was here to tell us that a teenager from the ward had skidded off the road and was on his way to the hospital. The doorbell rang again, and then the door was knocked on, impatiently.         When I finally opened the door, I saw Jared Helm, one of the newer members of the ward, carrying his five-year-old daughter, Kelly. She had curly blonde hair that always seemed messy, no matter how often it was combed. The remains of breakfast (oatmeal) were all over her chin. She was still in her pajamas, but she’d been bundled into an inside-out snowsuit. How her father had figured out how to get the zipper up without putting it on the right way around, I didn’t know.         “Can I see Bishop Wallheim?” asked Jared.         Not an accident, then, I thought with relief. “Come in from the cold. He’s awake, and he’ll be down in a minute,” I assured Jared. So would Samuel, the youngest of my five sons, who was a senior in high school; I could hear his alarm going off upstairs and knew he’d be rushing out the door soon.         I led Jared and Kelly to the front room, where my neglected piano waited for me to practice. Mostly, the room was used now for people waiting to go into Kurt’s office.         Jared Helm looked terribly strained, though he was well-kempt. His hair was darker than his daughter’s, but it was clear where she got the messy mop. His was wet now, the curls ruthlessly combed around a side part. He was dressed in a button-down striped shirt, cable sweater, and neatly pressed khakis. I wondered if his wife did that pressing or if he did it himself.         I wished I knew the Helms better, but I had only a general impression that he and his wife were unhappy, although devoted parents to Kelly, and that they were struggling financially, as a lot of people in the ward were currently. Maybe he was here because he was in money trouble? Kurt could send him to the bishop’s storehouse for some basic food supplies, but many people were unwilling to take that kind of help. The stigma wasn’t insignificant. More often, people wanted Kurt to write them a check.         I got out a toy for Kelly to play with, but she held it limply in her hands, uninterested. They were all trucks and building toys, things my sons had enjoyed. I’d never had a chance to build a collection of toys for girls, though I sometimes imagined what I would have bought for a daughter. Dolls? Faux cooking supplies and a tiny stove?         I found a picture book and read it quietly to her, but after several pages I put it down. Kelly’s eyes were wandering all over the room. I finally sat her on my lap and let her plunk on the piano keys, which she seemed to enjoy. None of my boys had been interested at this age, except for Samuel.         But after a few minutes, Kelly’s piano playing earned the attention of her father, who had been staring silently at his lap. “Stop that noise,” he snapped. “You know how to behave better than that.” He didn’t seem to see me at all.         The little girl immediately went still and folded her hands together. The moment Jared looked away, Kelly slipped her thumb into her mouth, her eyes intent on her father, and I had the sense that she would be in trouble if he caught her doing that, too.         I moved slightly to the side, protecting Kelly from her father’s critical gaze with my body, and I thought, as I so often did, about the daughter I had lost. Too often, I knew I judged other parents for not treating a daughter as I imagined I would have treated mine, had she lived.         I could hear Kurt’s feet thumping on the floor of the bathroom. He was out of the shower. “The bishop will be down in just a minute, I’m sure,” I said again to Jared. It wouldn’t take Kurt long to dress. He had become quite efficient at putting on his daily suit. He didn’t used to wear one to work every day, but since he became bishop last year, it had seemed that there was no time when he could wear casual clothes.         Samuel rushed past Jared Helm and out the front door, hair still wet, a piece of bread between his teeth. “Love you, Mom,” he mumbled as he headed out to the bus stop.         “Love you,” I said, still seated with Kelly on my lap. I gave up on the hope of giving my son a hug and kiss goodbye this morning. He wasn’t exactly unwelcoming if I was waiting by the door and it was easy for him to stoop over me, but he wouldn’t kiss or hug me back.         After Samuel had gone, I noticed that Jared was wiping tears from his eyes. He was in distress, that much was obvious. Where was his wife? If this was a financial problem, as I had first thought, why weren’t they here together? I had seen Carrie Helm last Sunday at church and she had been sitting a clear distance from her husband, with Kelly between them. It had been obvious that they were in the midst of an argument, but I hadn’t thought much of it at the time. Married couples fight.         Carrie Helm was one of the voices I most enjoyed in Relief Society, the church women’s group. Carrie was intelligent and she wasn’t afraid of saying something that might sound controversial. She was earnest about what she said, too, and didn’t do it purely for the sake of causing a stir. But I’d always had the feeling her husband’s viewpoints were more conservative than hers, and had wondered how that affected their marriage.         Last week in Sunday School, with Jared sitting beside her, Carrie had made a comment about the priesthood not belonging to men, but rather being God’s power that men had access to. Jared’s expression was livid. He’d leaned over and whispered something to her, and after that, I saw her flinch when he tried to touch her. Four days later, and apparently Jared Helm had still not apologized to her sufficiently.         And now he sat here crying silently in the hall at 6:50 on a Thursday morning. “Are you hungry?” I asked. “I can get you something to eat.” Food is the first thing we Mormons tend to offer. Sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn’t, but the offer is a way of showing concern, at least.         “No, thank you,” said Jared, clearing his throat. “I’m fine.”         “I’m hungry,” said Kelly, taking her thumb out of her mouth.         “You don’t need to eat again. I already fed you breakfast at home.”         Kelly looked at her thumb and said nothing.         “Growing children are always hungry,” I said. “I don’t mind fixing her something. It will make me feel useful.” I put Kelly down, covering up the hand with the damp thumb as I led her into the kitchen.         “Behave yourself, Kelly,” said Jared.         I wasn’t sure if he was always like this with her or if he was simply overly anxious about being in someone else’s home. I hoped it was the latter, and I could show him that I didn’t mind the trouble.         In the kitchen, I set Kelly on a stool by the counter and set out six separate jams for her to choose from as I made toast. A few minutes later, I heard Kurt come downstairs. He spoke briefly to Jared in the front room, then invited him into his office. I breathed relief and focused my attention on Kelly. After she had chosen a separate jam for each slice of toast and worked through three full pieces, the little girl drank a glass of milk and burped.         “Are you too hot? Maybe I could help you get that snowsuit off,” I offered.         “Daddy put it on wrong,” said Kelly, glancing in the direction her father had gone, as if she wanted to make sure he couldn’t hear her.         “I can see that,” I said, fighting a smile.         “Mommy never puts it on wrong, but Daddy always does.”          I smiled at the echo of Carrie’s spunky attitude. “Daddies are sometimes good at other things,” I said.         “I know. But Daddy says Mommy is bad,” said Kelly. Her lips quivered. “He says that I shouldn’t want her.”         “But all little girls want their mothers,” I said. “Of course they do.” Was Kelly telling me that her mother had left them? I supposed this was the answer to the question of why Jared was here. Poor Jared. Poor Carrie. But most of all, poor Kelly. The children were the ones who always suffered the most when parents had problems. “Your daddy loves you very much,” I said.         Kelly put her hands to her hair. “He forgot to brush me,” she said.         “Well, let’s deal with that right now,” I said, and led Kelly to the upstairs bathroom. I didn’t have any ribbons or hair elastics suitable for a young girl, but I used what I could. In the end, the hair was well brushed, and I had a few tiny braids in it that were holding. By the time her father came out of Kurt’s office downstairs, Kelly was giggling and making faces at herself in the mirror.         But then Jared called for his daughter and Kelly tensed, all the happiness erased from her face. Just like her mother at church last week. What was going on here? I’d thought it was simply a case of an unhappy marriage, but was it more serious than that?         “I have to obey Daddy,” said Kelly.         “Yes,” I said, and led her downstairs to her father’s arms.         Jared didn’t say a word to her or to me, simply took his daughter and left.         Kurt closed the door behind them.         “Can you tell me anything?” I asked. Most of the secrets Kurt found out were to be held in confidence, but there isn’t the same kind of strictness in a Mormon bishop’s counseling session as there is with Catholic confession.         Kurt shrugged. “It will come out soon enough. Carrie has left him.”         “Last night? Did they have an argument? Why he didn’t come then?”         “Apparently she left him in the night. He woke up and found her gone. She left a note saying she wasn’t coming back.”         “I’m surprised she left Kelly,” I said. I was more than surprised. I was in knots about it. A mother leaving a child, it was—unfathomable to me. What pain had she been in? What had she been thinking? It was one thing to file for divorce and to ask your husband to leave the house. Or even to take your daughter and find an apartment. To leave her behind, and in the middle of the night without a proper goodbye . . . I shivered.         “It’s hard to know what goes on in the mind of a woman,” said Kurt.         I hated when Kurt said things like that. “It is not that hard. Women are just as sensible as men,” I said. “If you understand what their lives are like.”         “Then how could she leave her daughter? I never would have thought it of Carrie Helm, of all people. She loved that little girl so much.”         Yes, she had. She had always walked Kelly to Primary and made sure she had a big hug. “She might not have felt she had any choice.” It was the only answer I could think of. Kurt, as bishop, was the one who should know more of the inner workings of their relationship than I did. But then again, Carrie and Jared had never come to see him together, so now all he would have was Jared’s side of the story. Jared had a calling as an instructor in the elders quorum and fulfilled it faithfully every month. As far as Kurt was concerned, he was the one who was reliable and trustworthy.         “I asked him if there was any hope they might still reconcile. I wish they had come to see me earlier. I might have been able to help.” He looked toward the kitchen, the smell of toast and jam drawing him, and we moved in that direction. I put new toast in the toaster and he got out a plate.         Along with his big appetite, Kurt had enormous faith in the power of prayer. He thought any marriage could be saved with enough work and help from God. I am sad to say I am not as believing. Some marriages aren’t meant to last, and it was quite possible that Jared and Carrie Helm’s was one of these. They did not seem like a particularly good match. There were marriages that worked despite disparities in character, but not many.         “He said she was very final about it. She said she was never coming back. He thinks there may be another man involved.”         “I see,” I said. If Carrie Helm had realized how mismatched she and Jared were, and she’d found someone who was less of a mismatch—well, it almost explained things. It was selfish, but people are sometimes selfish. Sometimes even mothers. Perhaps mothers especially, since they spent so much time being unselfish.         “He’s going to have to deal with divorce papers and child care issues, along with custody agreements,” Kurt was saying as he opened his favorite jam jars and began to stir the contents. Why he did that, I never knew. “But he wasn’t up for talking about any of that. He just wanted to hear me say that he wasn’t to blame for what had happened, and that God still had good things for his future.”         Well, I was glad that Kurt hadn’t insisted on reconciliation, as most bishops would have felt obliged to do to keep the family together. “Poor Kelly,” I said.         “The whole ward will have to band together to help Jared and Kelly. She’ll need a lot of substitute mothers.” Kurt was looking at me then. I would do what I could, of course, but I wasn’t sure I knew what Kelly needed.         “I’d like to talk to Carrie. Do you think Jared might have a number for her?” I asked.         Kurt shook his head. “He said she didn’t leave any way of contacting her. We’ll have to wait and see what happens in the next few days.” He stopped short of saying he hoped that she came back, and that all of this could still be fixed.         “Carrie is a good woman,” I said, hoping it was true. I had thought I knew her, but obviously I had not known her well enough.         “Well, I suppose God can find good in any of us,” said Kurt. That was as close as he came to saying he considered this situation to be Carrie’s fault.         Didn’t he remember those years when I had been at home with all five boys, Adam, Joseph, Kenneth, Zachary, and baby Samuel? I had never said it aloud, but there were times when I had had fantasies of walking away, going out and getting a job, finding a life of my own again, where I wasn’t on call twenty-four hours a day and responsible for tiny lives. It was too much for any one person. Maybe more so for someone who had reconciled herself to not being married and never having children. And then Kurt had come along and changed all my plans, made me believe again I could have the whole Mormon dream. Husband. Children. Temple sealing. And all that went with it. We lived in a city that had once been known for the state prison at the point of the mountain and was now known for the Mormon temple that had just been built. But it seemed that the Mormon plan of happiness with a perfect family full of forgiveness hadn’t worked out as well for Carrie Helm.

Addressing The Complaints Reviewers Have Made By Lisa Shafer Stuck home with a nasty cold yesterday, I was intrigued by the polarized reviews of Mette Ivie Harrison's recent mystery, The Bishop's Wife, so I bought a kindle copy and read it.Basically, it's a step up from cozy (it's been edited, for one thing!) but not a real crime novel. It still features a middle-aged female protagonist, but there's no romance sub-plot, as she is happily married. Also, this woman is not stupid (as in most cozies) and she has no "in" with any cops. Linda, the protagonist, is indeed the Bishop's wife, and the main plot begins when her neighbor, a young mother, leaves home without a trace. At the same time, another neighbor's husband is dying -- and he keeps raving about his first wife, a woman whose death is also clouded in mystery.I really liked this book, but people are going nuts with negative reviews. So, instead of giving a regular review of my own, I thought I'd comment on a few recurring themes in the negative reviews.Negative theme #1: "It moves too slowly."Yeah, it kind of does move slowly. I agree. However, I think it's because Harrison gave it a Mormon setting, and, while an author can explain ordinary cozy hooks like baking or antique hunting with a few references, giving the non-Mormon reader some clue as to what life is like for Utah Mormons takes a fair amount of explanation. There just had to be a good deal of backstory. I'm not sure how Harrison could possibly have done otherwise.Negative theme #2 "It misrepresents the Church."A reviewer (unfortunately) named Lisa gave this book low ratings on goodreads, stating, "My chief complaint is that the book misrepresents the Church in some ways.... " Hers is a common complaint.Several readers objected to the fact that Harrison omits the Stake President in the story, which I found odd, because that position is completely irrelevant to the plot. Why would Harrison complicate things with even more Mormon backstory? I think that's also why she left out visiting teachers and home teachers; they aren't necessary to the plot, and the reader doesn't need to know every single thing about Mormons. Harrison also left out fast offerings, baptisms for the dead, and ward bulletins -- because they are necessary to the plot.Negative theme #3: "It's feminist."Yeah, it is. And that's a good thing, not a bad thing. Get over yourself. One Amazon reviewer who goes by "mindful" calls the book "a wolf in sheep's clothing." He identifies himself as a former Mormon bishop and is clearly offended by the fact that Harrison shows a lot of the turmoil Mormon women face. But it is precisely that realistic turmoil that makes the book work! Linda deals with everything from blatant misogyny (Alex Helm) to benevolent patriarchy (her own husband and every other "good" man in the plot) -- and she struggles with it. She also struggles with the eternal polygamy (in the afterlife)which still exists in the church. I know NUMEROUS women who are very, very troubled by this. I don't know a single man who worries much about it. Therefore, this "mindful" and the reviewers like him who pat women on their heads and tell us not to trouble ourselves with all this feminist thinking are EXACTLY the reason why books that deal with these issues need to be read.Negative theme #4: "The men aren't like real Mormon men."Several reviewers commented that there are no "good" men in this book. Huh? Linda's husband, her five sons, Tobias, Cheri Tate's husband, and her new son-in-law are all good men. But the book is about a crime, so it naturally focuses on the "bad guys." What do you expect in a mystery novel?Amazon reviewer L. Hawkins, who appears to be "Lisa" on goodreads, said, "In my forty-plus years of Church membership, I have never met anyone who believed that women are inferior as several of the men in this book do." My response to that is that in my lifetime, I've met many, many men who have no problem with women as second class Mormons -- as well as a fair number of men who've hid some pretty nasty stuff behind a facade of church righteousness, some of whom were never even reprimanded for it. Thus, I find Harrison's characters to be fairly plausible, given that this IS a mystery novel. So, would I recommend this book? Yes, I would -- to readers who can get through all the necessary backstory about Mormons and to Mormons who already know that backstory. If you're an impatient reader who needs constant action, if you couldn't make it through The Scarlet Letter and all its introspection, skip this one.

Introspective, character-centered novel By Kathy Cunningham On one level, Mette Ivie Harrison's THE BISHOP'S WIFE is mystery story about the sudden and inexplicable disappearance of a young wife and mother. But at its core, the novel is less about the mystery (or about the vanished woman) than it is about the narrator, a middle-aged Mormon woman struggling to find her place in the very patriarchal Mormon Church. Linda Wallheim has always been the kind of woman she was expected to be - a loyal wife to her husband (the ward Bishop), a devoted mother to her four sons, and a caring and committed "sister" to those in need. But she has been troubled by her lack of real position in the Church, as well as by how little her thoughts and opinions matter to the male leadership. So when young Carrie Helm suddenly runs out on her husband and five-year-old daughter, Linda can't help but wonder what could possibly have pushed Carrie to do something so drastic. Could her husband have been abusing her? Could she have been murdered?Reading this novel, I was reminded of the television show "Murder, She Wrote," about a middle-aged woman solving murders among her small-town neighbors. How could so many nefarious acts be happening in Jessica Fletcher's little town? Well, that's pretty much how it feels here. As Linda begins investigating Carrie's disappearance, she stumbles upon several other marriages with shady secrets. And it isn't long before she's wondering whether all women are at the mercy of tyrannical men up to no good. At one point, she even asks herself whether her own sons could be abusing their wives! As the story progresses, Linda becomes very attached to both Carrie's daughter Kelly (who reminds Laura of the infant daughter she lost twenty years earlier), and a recent widow whose husband may have kept secrets about the death of his first wife. She's also drawn to another young couple who seem to be having fertility problems, but may be having much more serious issues. Through it all, Linda is a caregiver, a confidant, and an amateur detective, going way beyond what her husband thinks is appropriate.Ultimately, Linda must come to terms with her own sense of self - what is her role as a woman and a mother within the Mormon Church? She can listen to people's problems, she can offer comfort and solace, but she can never be a Priesthood holder, she can never give blessings, and she can never be a Bishop of the Church, as is her husband. She realizes, at one point, that mothers have a hard time finding themselves because they spend so much time taking care of others. By the end of the novel, she may be ready to take care of herself. While I enjoyed reading THE BISHOP'S WIFE, it wasn't really the mystery novel I expected. Instead, it's a very introspective character study about a woman in search of herself. I was a bit put off by the proliferation of criminal activity Linda discovers in Draper, Utah (population around 40,000) - it seemed almost ludicrous by the end. But I appreciate Harrison's efforts to make Linda a likeable and believable protagonist - additionally, it was refreshing that many of Linda's assumptions prove to be untrue (it's one of the things she learns, both about herself and about the people she judges). If you enjoy leisurely-paced, character-centered stories, this one is worth a read.

As the wife of a Mormon bishop (a position that to my non-Mormon mind seems to be approximately equivalent to a lay pastor), Linda’s life is a constant stream of people who need help, temporal and spiritual. Nonetheless, when she sees Jared Helm cradling his 5-year-old daughter in his arms, she knows this is no routine call to the bishop. Jared says his wife Carrie has disappeared, leaving behind all of her possessions. The community rallies to support Jared and his daughter, and when no trace of Carrie can be found the police are brought in. As Linda learns more about the situation, however, she becomes convinced that Jared has murdered his wife. She undertakes her own investigation, all the while trying to juggle her life as wife and mother of five boys and “ward mother” to five hundred people.I love mysteries that teach me about some subject and was drawn to this book to learn about Mormon life and practices, which Harrison should know, as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She gives the reader a vivid portrait of Mormon life and societal structure, especially the strong support systems in place to help fellow Mormons. It was not surprising that Jared would turn to his bishop before the police when his wife disappears. There is not a lot of discussion of Mormon theology except for the vision of the after-life, which is very different from that of most other mainstream religions in the emphasis it places on eternal bonds with those we love on earth. The author does a good job of conveying the information about Mormons through characters’ actions and comments rather than through long expository passages. The title for this book is extremely appropriate. Linda’s life as the bishop’s wife dominates the pages. She sees the ward members through weddings and funerals and other milestones of their lives and squeezes her investigation of Carrie’s disappearance (as well as another odd mystery she discovers later) into her all-too-precious spare time, despite her husband’s restrained but clear disapproval. The mystery element is handled well and has some twists and surprises, but it does not really drive the book.I was ambivalent about how many stars to give The Bishop’s Wife. Many mystery fans, especially male readers, will feel there is too much emphasis on personal relationships to suit their taste. I would give the publishers at most 2 stars for the book description, which sets up expectations of a book that belongs more solidly in the Mystery genre. Despite the fact that the mystery element is handled well, it takes a back seat to the human relationships, much more in the vein of Jodi Picoult than Conan Doyle or even Louise Penny. Caveat lector, but for the right lector, this is a well-done book.

Delicious, simple recipes such as Green Drinks, Beet Treats, Avocado shakes, Watercress Juice and many others are included for any activity whether your detoxifying, dieting or just living a healthy lifestyle. Home canning puts the pleasure of eating natural, delicious produce at your fingertips year-round. Preserving food in mason jars might sound old-fashioned, but it is as modern and practical as the latest health food trend or gourmet creation -- and it's really quite simple! Home canners enjoy the rewards of numerous homemade meals and snacks, created from just one preserving session. When you preserve food at home, you create products that save you time in day-to-day food preparation, a real blessing given today's hectic lifestyles. Individual home-preserved jars can be opened and served as is, or used to simplify on-the-spot meal and snack preparation.

A Simple Step Beyond Cooking

Like baking, preserving food is a simple step beyond recipe preparation. For home canning, this step is called "heat processing." It is neither difficult nor time-consuming. In fact, the most popular home-preserved foods require less time than baking a cake or a casserole. Unlike baking, the results of home canning sessions do not require space in your refrigerator or freezer. Properly home-canned foods can be stored in your cupboard for up to a year.

During heat processing, mason jars filled with food and fitted with two-piece metal closures are heated, destroying harmful microorganisms that cause food spoilage and creating an airtight seal that prevents contamination during storage. Precise processing techniques, times and temperatures are determined by the acidity of the food being preserved. A full description of the process of home canning, with step-by-step instructions and all the details you need to know to preserve food safely, can be found in The Art and Science of Home Food Preservation, beginning on page 409.

If you're eager to jump right in, the Getting Started chapter (pages 8-18) gives detailed instructions on preparing five versatile home-canned foods: strawberry jam, mint jelly, salsa, corn relish and dill pickles. If you prefer to know all the details before you begin a project, take some time to peruse The Art and Science of Home Food Preservation, and especially the section called Boiling-Water Heat Processing, Step by Step (page 415), before you begin one of the Getting Started recipes.

Happy canning!

Great book, no matter your skill level By kidnugget I got this book about three weeks ago, having never canned or preserved, and I was completely impressed. Using the recipes inside, I've made pickled ocra, green beans, brandied cherries, sweet asparagus, and the hands down best pickle relish I've ever had in my life. It has hundreds of recipes, and they are all wonderful. If you're into fruit preserves or jams, sweet or dill pickles, slasas, relishes, chutneys, condiments, you name it, there are dozens of recipes of each type of food. I'll be tackling some home made wine and cranberry mustard next week. The first batches of pickles I made were with utensils I already had on hand. All you need is the mason jars if you have a well stocked kitchen. I've sense bought some bottle clamps to get the jars out of the hot water, but that's about it.Here are the pros:*) Thorough discussion of the steps of preserving.*) Discussion on foodborne illness and how to kill it through preserving.*) A look at high acid versus low acid canning.*) A handy guide of produce weight and volume (for example, one pound of cherries equals 2 1/2 cups of cherries, so you know exactly what to get at the store).*) Amazing, easy recipes for all levels of skill and tastes.*) Dozens of variations on recipes (not just one type of cucumber pickle, but several!)Buy this book if you're thinking of starting or even an old time pro. It's great fun, and it can produce pickles, ketchups, and preserves where you controll all the ingredients (and can even go organic!).

By Barb S It was my lucky day when happenstance led me to this exciting new book. There are more than 400 recipes within, basic ones for new home canners and sophisticated recipes for more experienced canners and those newbies with sophisticated palates. New preservers and experienced canners alike will appreciate the section (with lots of illustrations) titled "The Art and Science of Home Food Preservation."The authors and their supporting cast know their stuff and impart that knowledge with clear language and instructions as well as helpful tips in sidebars for nearly every recipe, whether a special use for the preserved product or tips for selecting the best produce and ingredients for the recipe. They've answered the call for "ethnic" recipes and provide recipes the likes of harissa, 14 salsas, and five different chili sauce recipes as well as regional specialties like okra pickles. Among the eighteen chutney recipes, there's sure to be at least one blue ribbon winner for ambitious State and County Fair competitors around the country. While the first 378 pages are dedicated to recipes processed in a boiling water bath, there is also a small section about pressure processing for vegetables and combination foods like beef stew and chili. There are not many photos; I don't mind that. Those photos that are included are taste-tempting and colorful - I'm pretty sure I can taste that Thai Hot and Sweet Dipping Sauce just looking at the picture of it.As a prize-winning Fair competitor for more than 25 years, I am really excited about this book and look forward to trying some of its innovative recipes for my family and my friends. I salute the authors and thank them for the newest addition to my preserving library.
