By Mark Snyder This and the first book give a great and historical account of how God worked wonders within the African American community during trying times, as well as transforming times within the African American tradition of Methodism. It's wonderful to read Methodist history through the lens of Mr. Jason as he presents the details of the Delaware Conference and its struggle to be faithful despite societal influences. As a historian, Mr. Jason helps us to see snippets of struggle, ambition, success, and faithfulness of the people we call Methodists. It's best to buy both volume 1 and volume 2 together as volume 2 picks up where volume 1 leaves off.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A good book on low carb diet By The Learner It’s a great book I found about low carb diet. Before this, I tried a few other low carb diet books but this book is different from them. That’s why I am giving it a 5 star review. The book has a variety of foods with low carbs and has easy to make recipes in it. Ingredients used in the recipes can be easily available at your home; you don't need to go out of your way to buy a bunch of specialty foods and ingredients for that. It's more than a cookbook, and it worth’s more than 99 cents. I loved the recipes given in the book and images used are also very clear and attractive. It will make your mouth water and you cannot stop yourself to eat that recipe. Looking forward to try all of the recipes given in this book. It is also loaded with tons of interesting and tasty low carb recipes. A must recommended cookbook for low carb diet recipes.

It's only 68 pages total in large print, and 33 pages are generic recipes available on the net. Recipes are incomplete and misleading. In one, it says start with skinless chicken breasts but at the end says remove meat from chicken wings.Other recipes call for artificial sweetener even though book lists artificial sweetener as forbidden. I am suspicious about all the positive reviews.

I should have paid attention to the page count - 92. The book is barely 1/4 inch thick. There is nothing great about this book.

Aha Moments in the Bible: Finding Your Purpose in the Bible, by Della Stewart

Review Many other books of Christian inspiration cherry-pick from the Bible, however, especially from the Old Testament. Stewart, though, is adept at working to create a calm, inclusive message--a vision of Christianity that seeks to put others before self and find a centering peace in communion with God. Prayer groups will particularly find Stewart's numerous Scriptural references to be instructive. By martha pekins I have been reading this book as a devotional because after I read a chapter I feel like I need to meditate on it and let it sink in. It seems like every day the chapter that I read is exactly what I am needing for that day. I truly believe that the author allowed The Lord to use her in writing this book. I plan on starting over when I'm finished because it is really speaking to me and I know that I can benefit from reading it over and over.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Five Amazing, Inspiring, Challenging, Reassuring Stars! By kiki This is the best “self-help” book out there. It is a devotional, a study guide and eye opening look into God’s Holy Word. This powerfully written book provides example after example of how the Bible can impact your life and judgment for the better. Whether you are looking for inspiration or guidance on how to get through a difficult time, this book has the answer; and that answer is provided using the unfailing advice and teachings of God. I often struggle with anxiety and found several passages helpful to me including:“We can change our lives by truly living by faith in God. Life is too short to squander it only worrying and wishing for impossible, unrealistic, and unsatisfying desires. Things can make you happy for a short time, but truly immersing ourselves in the love of God and His will is when we can really seize happiness.”“Matthew 6:27: “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” (NIV)”This book is the best kind of cliff note, it provides you with scripture after scripture that you can use to educate yourself and it’s as easy as looking under contents to find the subject you need. Whether you are struggling with accountability, bitterness and anger, feeling lost and in need of perspective during a difficult time or negativity in your life this book has scriptures to help guide you out of the dark. There are also countless opportunities to learn the way to live a happy life, how to avoid the pitfalls of being judgmental, seeking vengeance, reigning in that ego and fighting our ever-growing sense of entitlement. You will want to read this book over and over and will most certainly have more highlighted passages each and every time you read through it!

Just what nobody wanted on the day before Thanksgiving."Not if we get to her in time," said her partner, Jamal Lincoln."Why us?" Tilda grumbled to Cherie, the dispatcher. "This is a job for animal control.""Chief said you'd say that," Cherie told her. "He also said to tell you that today it's a job for you and to bring a rope and get to work before somebody ends up hurt.""I don't believe this," Tilda muttered as Jamal turned on the look-out-here-come-the-cops lights and shot their patrol car out of town toward the highway."We're in Icicle Falls. Believe it," Jamal said. "You still got that rope in the trunk?""Yes. It's there from the last time." Tilda frowned. "You know, this really isn't the job of the Icicle Falls Police Force. I don't care if Stumpy Hodgkins is best buds with the chief.""You gonna tell that to the chief?""Yeah, I am. As soon as we get back to the station."Jamal grinned. "That's what I love about you, partner. You're fearless. You should've been a man. I swear you've got more balls than most guys.""Thanks. I think."Tilda knew she was a tough cookie, and she liked being tough. She liked being a modern woman, able to stand up for herself and hold her own against any man. But she also had a feminine side and, secretly, she fantasized about some man tougher than her, pushing her up against a wall and having at it.She'd thought she'd found that man, but it hadn't worked out. He'd never bothered to look beneath her tough exterior and check out her sweet, soft side. Instead, he'd fallen for the kind of woman Tilda thought of as a cream puff. Maybe that was what all men really wanted, someone as sweet as honey and as elastic and bendable as warm taffy. Tilda wasn't a bending kind of woman. Sadly, there were very few men who appreciated that.Jamal did, but he was her partner. Then there was Devon Black, town bad boy, the king of speeding tickets and barroom brawls, who thought he was God's gift to women. In fact, he thought he was God's gift to her. Christmas might have been just a month away, but she had no intention of unwrapping Devon Black. She frowned, thinking of their last encounter. "What the hell?" he'd said angrily when she'd pulled him over a week ago for a broken taillight. "I wasn't speeding.""No, you have a taillight out."Instead of showing some respect and thanking her for letting him know, he'd flashed her a cocky grin and said, "You're looking for excuses to see me." As if she had nothing better to do than chase after wolves dressed in blue jeans."If I wanted to see you, I could just wait till the next bar fight," she retorted. It was how she'd met him when he moved to town. Trouble followed Devon around like a lost puppy. "Now, do you want me to let you off with a warning or do you want to keep flapping that big mouth of yours and up the ante?"That had shut him up—until she gave him his warning and turned to leave. "I'm working the bar at the Man Cave. Come on by after you get off work and I'll give you a beer on the house." As if he owned the place. It was his brother's. He just filled in on weekends."In your dreams," she'd called back over her shoulder."And yours, too, I'll bet. I can show you some new uses for those handcuffs.""Oh, there's an original line," she'd muttered. Fifty Shades of Devon Black. No way, even if he was ridiculously gorgeous. So was a hot-fudge sundae, but look what it did to your butt."There's Stumpy," Jamal said, bringing her back to the present.Sure enough, the short, old guy was hobbling as fast as he could down the side of the snowbanked road in his jeans and cowboy boots and leather bomber jacket, his hunting cap mashed down over his ears, a lasso dangling from his right hand and Daisy's halter from his left. And there, half a mile farther up the road, trotted his horse, the escape artist. Loose again. Not a good thing, considering the fact that the old paint was deaf."You can turn off the lights now," Tilda said, and Jamal obliged. They pulled up beside Stumpy and Tilda lowered the window. "Stumpy, this is the third time this month she's gotten loose.""I know, and I'm sorry. Daisy!" he hollered at the horse. "Dang it all, come back."Sometimes Tilda wondered how deaf Daisy really was. Either she was faking it or she was psychic because the darned beast tossed her head as though she was saying, "No way." Then she started across the road. Oh, great. An SUV came over the rise and Tilda sucked in her breath. The car skidded to a halt and waited while Daisy stood in the middle of the road, trying to decide what to do. The driver soon tired of waiting and honked. The noise didn't faze Daisy. She stood there, watching Tilda, Jamal and Stumpy as if wondering what they were doing out here on a cold winter afternoon. Then she strolled back to her own side of the road and continued her journey, probably looking for some other horses to spend Thanksgiving with."Give me the rope and get in," Tilda commanded. With Stumpy safe inside and the rope in hand, they set off in hot pursuit. Well, semihot, not wanting to end up hitting the animal."I'd'a gotten her," Stumpy insisted from the backseat. "I don't know why Mildred keeps calling you guys.""Because she's seen the way you drive," Tilda said. They were lucky that Stumpy hadn't taken the horse trailer. The week before, he'd attempted to rope Daisy from behind the wheel, skidding into Dan Masters's truck and effectively blocking traffic for a good forty minutes while they sorted things out. Daisy, naturally, had gotten away and wound up at the llama farm. They'd almost reached the horse. "Stop here," Tilda told Jamal. "We don't want to spook her.""Everything spooks her," Stumpy grumbled. The natural retort would be, "Then why do you keep the dumb critter?" But Tilda didn't say it. She knew why. Daisy had been their granddaughter Willow's horse. Willow had died two years earlier from a brain tumor. Stumpy could no more get rid of the horse than he could throw out the pictures of their only granddaughter that filled their living room.Tilda got out of the car and shut the door as Daisy moved down the road a few paces."Go get 'er, cowgirl," Jamal teased."Ha, ha," Tilda muttered. Jamal was the size of Texas and could take down three men single-handed, but he was a city boy and no use whatsoever in capturing a deaf horse.Tilda moved away from the patrol car. Daisy, sensing pursuit, trotted a few more feet, then stopped and looked around. Neener, neener, neener. You can't catch me.Oh, yes, I can. You may be big, but you've got a brain the size of an onion. Tilda squatted next to the freshly piled snow on the side of the road and waited. She'd done her share of ropin' and ridin'. Gone to horse camp at the nearby guest ranch all through high school. She was not going to be outsmarted by a horse.Daisy tossed her mane and then, to show that she wasn't even remotely worried about Tilda and her rope, decided to enjoy a little roadside snack, pulling up a mouthful of snow-tipped grass.Tilda slowly stood and sneaked forward a few feet.Daisy raised her head and Tilda froze. This was like playing Red Light, Green Light when she was a kid. Daisy went back for seconds. Okay, green light. Tilda moved forward again.Daisy lifted her head and checked to see where Tilda was.Frozen in place, of course. The next time the horse went for some grass, Tilda moved in, and this time when Daisy lifted her head, Tilda swung the rope and…missed.Daisy shied away and trotted off down the road, and Tilda swore."You rope about as good as you shoot," Jamal called from the patrol car.Tilda gave him the finger and started the whole process again. Horses were such foodies. Tilda could have lured over any other equine simply by shaking a can of oats. Was there such a thing as horse hearing aids? If so, it would sure make catching Daisy a lot easier. It took two more tries before she got the rope around Daisy's neck, although the third try wasn't exactly the charm. Daisy neighed and pulled away, and even though Tilda had planted her feet, the horse still managed to yank her over into the snow. "Oh, no, you don't," Tilda growled, struggling back to her feet. "Bring the halter," she yelled.Stumpy climbed out, holding it. "We got her now," he said gleefully.We. Yeah, right. Finally Daisy was haltered and rewarded for cooperating with the police with a pat on the neck. "You'd better stop this escape-artist stuff or we're gonna ship you off to become dog food," Tilda threatened.Daisy just tossed her head yet again. She knew Tilda was all talk and no action.Tilda was equally stern with Stumpy. "You make sure your fence is well mended and you keep that barn door shut," she told him as she handed over the escapee. "We can't keep coming out to help you catch her." She felt bad about being mean to the old guy. He was in his seventies and had arthritis in both hips, and maintaining the house and barn on their five-acre spread was getting to be too much for him. His wife was ready to downsize. Maybe being in trouble with the cops would motivate Stumpy to find a home for Daisy and move someplace smaller.Stumpy hung his head. "I know, Tilda. You guys have better things to do.""In Icicle Falls?" Jamal cracked as they drove off, leaving Stumpy and Daisy to make their own way home."Right.""Hey, you want action? Go to New York or LA," Tilda said, and turned up the heat. They'd have to swing by her place so she could get some dry pants."No, thanks," he said with a grin. "No horses to chase in LA. Anyway, I'd probably get stuck riding with some clown who farts all the time. Besides, where am I gonna find a lady cop as cool as you?"That made her smile. "If you're trying to flatter me…"He snorted. "Like that would get me anywhere." He shook his head. "It sucks when the best woman in town also happens to be your partner.""Okay, now it's getting really thick in here." She had a pretty good face and her body was in mint condition but, sadly, there were too many good-looking women and not enough men in this town. She glanced out the window at the snowy firs and pines. "Sometimes I think I should've moved to Seattle." Except that Icicle Falls was her home and her roots ran too deep. Hmm. Maybe she was root-bound.Jamal grunted. "You should've thought of that before you bought a house. Hey, we still on for Saturday?""Yep. When are you coming back from your mom's?""Friday morning.""Good. You can help me finish packing.""You know, some of us have to fill in for you and work that day. Who takes vacation on Thanksgiving weekend, anyway?"Somebody who had a lot of vacation days piled up and more seniority than half the guys on the force. Tilda grinned at him and played the world's smallest violin on her fingers."All I gotta say is you better feed me.""'Cause you're a growing boy?""Order something from the deli. I don't wanna get poisoned," he joked. "Where'd you not learn to cook?""From my mom.""Come on, your mom owns Pancake Haus. She can't be that bad a cook.""She hires people to do stuff in the kitchen, you dope." Tilda sighed. "The turkey will probably be dry and we'll have stuffing out of a box. But I like stuffing out of a box. And Mom's great with pickles and olives. And at least Aunt Joyce and the cousins will be bringing the candied yams and casseroles.""What are you bringing?""Pumpkin pie.""From?""What do you mean 'from'?""I know you ain't bakin' it."Busted. Tilda shrugged. "Gingerbread Haus.""Yep, you're gonna make some lucky guy a great husband someday.""Oh, ha, ha."He shook his head. "Somehow, I just can't picture you in a house.""What should I be living in, a yurt?""More like an army barracks.""I do have a feminine side, you know.""Sure you do."She did, and she could hardly wait to get everything all squared away in her new house on Candy Cane Lane. She'd have dried flowers on the dining table and she was going to give that quilted wall hanging her cousin Georgie had made for her a place of honor on the living room wall. The house had three bedrooms, two baths, a big living room with a fireplace and a den, which she was going to turn into a kick-ass party room where her pals from the force could come over and play Call of Duty and World of Warcraft. The kitchen was bigger than the one she'd had in her condo. Once she put in new flooring, it would be great. Lots of room to…heat frozen dinners. Or make cookies. She made a mean chocolate chip cookie. Maybe, with her fancy new kitchen, she'd graduate to cake or pie or something.Expanding her cooking skills would have to wait, though. The house needed some serious work. It had been a bank repo and the previous owners had done a fair amount of damage. Walls would have to be repainted, gutters replaced and, of course, the kitchen set to rights. And she'd have to replace the carpeting, which was badly stained and a little on the smelly side. Well, okay, a lot.She hoped she could afford to give herself new carpeting for Christmas, at least in the living room and den."I don't know, Tillie girl," her mom had said when they'd first gone to see the place. "Sure looks like a lot of work. You really want to mess with that?""Yes," Tilda had replied. "It's in a great neighborhood. It'll be a good investment.""It'll be a pain in the patootie," Mom had corrected her.Yeah, but it would be her pain in the patootie and she was ready for it. For the past five years she'd been envisioning herself in a house with a great guy and a couple of kids and a big, friendly dog. The guy thing hadn't happened and she'd decided there was no point in waiting around. She was going to get her house and the dog, too. Heck, maybe even a kid. These days you didn't need a man to have kids. These days, it seemed you didn't need a man for much of anything.Tilda wanted one, anyway. There were still some things nobody did better than men, and she was darned tired of being the only one who ever saw the lacy bras and matching thongs she wore under her uniform.A man with a handsome, swarthy face and an admirable set of pecs suddenly appeared at the back of her mind. Oh, no. Devon Black was not in the running for that cozy life with the house, the kids and the dog. Devon Black did not deserve to see her in her bra and panties. Or out of them.Someday she'd find the right man. New people moved to Icicle Falls all the time. Maybe Santa would bring her the perfect man for Christmas next year. This year it was a house. And that was enough to ask for. After all, there was only so much the jolly old guy in red could fit in his sack.

There is no place in town that's as crazy as Candy Cane Lane. This is the story of three women, each trying to juggle the stresses of life, deal with crazy neighbors, and stay sane enough to still have a life!I absolutely adored this book. It had me chuckling all the way through and really helped rev me up for the holiday season ahead. This one needs to go on everyone's must read list. I highly recommend it.

Tilda Morrison the towns cop just bought her dream home a fixer upper on Candy Cane Lane. What would really make her life complete is a nice man in her life. There is one man that makes her heart skip a beat, and that is bad boy Devon Black, who happens to be interested in her, but she won't have anything to do with him. Living next door to Tilda is Ivy Bohn, who she knew in High School, and found her to be a spoiled brat. Has she changed, or do they still have nothing in common? Ivy Bohn is newly divorced, with two small kids. Ivy's husband rob left her a year ago for another woman, which left Ivy very bitter. She's trying to make Christmas happy for her kids while running her family business. Rob is missing his family and is trying to win her back. Then there is Maddy Donaldson who is responsible for the street name Candy Cane Lane, so it is her duty to make sure the street lives up to it's name. Maddy makes sure all the homes are decorated just so, and someone plays and dresses up as Mrs. Claus every night and hands out candy canes when people drive their cars down their street to look at the beautiful decorations. Maddy also owns the Spice Rack Shop, working full time and worrying about Candy Cane Lane is taking away time she would love to spend with her 13 year old daughter Jordan. Jordan is feeling neglected by her mother. On top of everything, someone is vandalizing the Christmas decorations on Candy Cane Lane. Who would do this? Of course Maddy expects Tilda to find out who is destroying their decorations, since she is a cop living on their street. Will Tilda find the romance she's looking for, and will it be with bad boy Devon Black? Will Ivy have a Merry and Bright Christmas with her kids, and will she forgive Rob? Will Maddy have a relaxing Christmas with her family and not worry so much? I loved going back to icicle Falls, especially at Christmas time, and you will too. To quote Ivy Bohn "Christmas in Icicle Falls is truly magical".

This is the latest installment in the Life in Icicle Falls series. I have been a HUGE fan of Ms. Roberts for more than five years now. There are three central characters of the novel; Tilda (previously appeared in The Cottage on Juniper Ridge) the town cop, who moves next door to single mom and nemesis, Ivy. And both of them live on the same street as perfect mom Maddy. Maddy has had the street renamed Candy Cane Lane and has personally launched a campaign to make the street perfect (following Thanksgiving) for Christmas. The women volunteer to dress up as Mrs. Claus every evening and hand out candy canes to visitors gazing at the decorations. Every neighbor is expected to do their part by decorating, even Tilda who moved in right at Thanksgiving. To complicate matters, Tilda is being pursued by bad boy, Devon Black. Hormones are happy dancing all around, but he’s clearly all wrong for her, because he’s not a cop or fireman. At the previous holiday season, Ivy’s husband told her that he wanted his freedom and now, he’s decided he was a fool and wants her back. But he’s broken her heart and she is not willing to forgive. In the meantime, Tilda seemingly has a vendetta against her, pulling her over for speeding and the like. Ho, ho, ho! Maddy is also having difficulties juggling her family/neighborhood/work responsibilities, and her in laws have announced that they are coming to stay for the holiday, which is just great; her mother in law could teach Scrooge *and* the Grinch a thing or two. To top it all off, someone is vandalizing the Christmas decorations. Who would do that? And the street’s residents expect Tilda to single-handedly catch the vandal(s) with little or no clues, even if it is her day off. Each chapter of the book starts with pearls of wisdom from Muriel Sterling’s book, Making the Holidays Bright: How to Have a Perfect Christmas. I’m still waiting for a publication of her books to be released! Of course I always enjoy visiting Icicle Falls, meeting all the new characters and catching up with some of the ones from previous books. You will too. And of course, I am looking forward to the next installment, Home on Apple Blossom Road, which is due out on 3/29/2016!In the interest of full disclosure, I'm part of Ms. Roberts's street team and have been so for several years. I got this book for free from the author in exchange for my honest review.

In retracing the second and third missionary trips of St. Paul, Father Richard Rohr breaks open the life of this saint, recasting him as a mystic and as the first Christian theologian. Rohr presents Paul's revolutionary and all-embracing vision and invites us to enter into the mystery of Christ and be transformed. Rohr breaks new ground by applying up-to-date theories of our universe, integrating them with Paul's revolutionary thinking about sin, saints, and spirituality.

In his own voice, as he and other pilgrims travel in October 2014 from Athens and Corinth to Berea, Thessalonika, Philippi, and Patmos in Greece to Ephesus, Istanbul, Miletus, and Pergamum in Turkey, Richard Rohr presents Paul's revolutionary and all-embracing vision and invites us to enter into the mystery of Christ and be transformed.

If you would like to travel at a walking pace with someone who will graciously impart their inspired and kindly insights on some of the occasionally pesky subjects in life, pull up a soft chair and a warm cuppa. From many different approaches, including gentle humor, the central issues of disentanglement are kept always in sight- in fact more and moreso. Have a chuckle, have a tear, have a sigh. You might feel generally uplifted.( btw and with respect- I haven't been inside of a church in decades.)

Cooking Healthy With Slow Cooker

Healthy crock pot cooking allows families to prepare their meals, have it cooked and be ready at dinner time with little effort. Once all the ingredients have been combined into a slow cooker (crock pot) you can easily set the meal to cook while away at work, or out enjoying other activities. In fact, foods cooked in a crock pot tend to have more intense flavors because of the extended cooking time. Having the ability to control all added ingredients can enhance the nutrient content of every family meal.

The first slow cooking crock pot was manufactured in the early 1970s. By the end of that decade, manufacturers had made them easier to clean. Within the first few years, hundreds of quality cookbooks dedicated to slow cooking became very popular with home chefs.

Aside from healthy crock pot cooking results, there are other significant benefits to using a slow cooker. These include:

A Timesaver - Most meals prepared in the slow cooker require only the single pot. There is only minimal initial preparation required, and the slow cooker will perform all the work while the family is away.

Reduced Energy Consumption - Slow cookers are manufactured to use substantially less electricity than through conventional ovens and stoves.

Easy Cleanup - Manufacturers now create crock pots that are easy to clean. The pot simply lifts out of the cooker and can be placed in the dishwasher, or cleaned at the sink. With the exception of cutting utensils and a cutting board, all meals are prepared in the crock pot.

Useful during Every Season - Because the slow cooker does not emit high levels of heat inside the kitchen, it works well for year-round cooking. There is a huge variety of recipes available including comfort foods for the wintertime, and easy to repair meals for the summer.

With the ability to use less expensive meats, cooking at lower temperatures, and controlling nutrient content, preparing meals in a slow cooker makes sense. It offers convenience, because it cooks the meals while the chef is away.

This book is not an exercise in either theology or historiography. It s more an exploration of simple affection and/or repulsion. The book seeks to find out, by looking at one account of Jesus the Gospel of Matthew whether we can like him. If Jesus is actually God, then our emotional reaction to him, as opposed to our intellectual response, becomes tremendously important: would we like God if we met him, heard him speak, and saw him in action? Would Jesus teachings and his personality move me to affection for him, so much so that I would change the priorities of my life? Would I like what he has to say? Would I like him?

Would that such a warning were a requirement for all books! Mind you, the writer is a prudent man: the reasons for disliking the book he lists later as reasons for liking it. Would I like Jesus? lives up to its early promise. It represents Fleming's response to Jesus as he is presented in the stories of the Gospels. It has swagger — take the chapter headings, which include 'New Man on the Block', 'Going for the Jugular' and 'The Dislikable Jesus'. Fleming also brings to his writing an unencumbered and free mind, a sharp feel for contemporary culture and history, and an uninhibited style. Fleming is a playwright. That shows in the distinctive gifts he brings to his writing: his ability to read himself into the Gospel stories, to be bowled over by the implications of the simple details that we might miss, and to share with us his excitement.

By Judith Baggio This is a book for both believers and non-believers, written in an accessible and humorous style. It is a terrific basis for discussion of how one might view Jesus if you met him at a party or through friends. Perfect for religious studies classes.

Celebrate the magic of Christmas in Haven Point with New York Times bestselling author RaeAnne Thayne, where hope, home and happily-ever-after are as close as your holiday stocking…

Christmas is the last thing on Cole Barrett's mind this year. He's barely hanging on trying to care for his two grieving children since his ex-wife died in a tragic accident. For the reclusive Cole, this is no time for gift-giving and celebration—and certainly not for a sunny-natured optimist to blow into his screwed-up life.

Physician Devin Shaw has long researched the curative powers of Lake Haven's mineral waters. Unfortunately, the hot springs are on Barrett property, forcing Devin to strike a bargain with the ranch's attractively gruff owner: she'll give Cole's children a magical Christmas, and Cole will allow her patients access to the springs. But can she work her holiday magic to heal the Barrett family's battered hearts—and her own?

Devin Shaw was bored. She supposed that particular state of affairs wasn't necessarily a bad thing in her current role as substitute attending physician at the Lake Haven Hospital emergency department. While a juicy trauma might be professionally stimulating and serve to break up the monotony, she adored all her neighbors in Haven Point and the greater Lake Haven area too much to wish that sort of stress and pain on anyone.Better to be stuck at the nurses' station of the small emergency department trying without success—and not for the first time, alas—to learn how to knit."No. Your problem here has to do with the amount of tension on the working yarn," Greta Ward insisted. "If you don't have the right tension, you'll end up losing control and making a huge mess you will only have to undo."The scarily efficient charge nurse of the emergency department at the Lake Haven Hospital leaned over her and tugged the yarn around her fingers in some kind of complicated way that Devin knew she would never be able to replicate."There. That's better. Try again."Devin concentrated, nibbling on her bottom lip as she tried to work the needles that seemed unwieldy and awkward, no matter how she tried. After her third time tangling the yarn into a total mess, Devin sighed and admitted defeat. Again. Every time they happened to be assigned to work together, Greta took a moment to try teaching her to knit. And every time, she came up short."People who find knitting at all relaxing have to be crazy. I think I must have some kind of mental block. It's just not coming.""You're not trying hard enough," Greta insisted."I am! I swear I am.""Even my eight-year-old granddaughter can do it," she said sternly. "Once you get past the initial learning curve, this is something you'll love the rest of your life.""I think it's funny." Callie Bennett, one of the other nurses and also one of Devin's good friends, smirked as she observed her pitiful attempts over the top of her magazine."Oh, yes. Hilarious," Devin said drily."It is! You're a physician who can set a fractured radius, suture a screaming six-year-old's finger and deliver a baby, all with your eyes closed.""Not quite," Devin assured her. "I open my eyes at the end of childbirth so I can see to cut the umbilical cord."Callie chuckled. "Seriously, you're one of the best doctors at this hospital. I love working with you and wish you worked here permanently. You're cool under pressure and always seem to know just how to deal with every situation. But I hate to break it to you, hon, you're all thumbs when it comes to knitting, no matter how hard you try.""I'm going to get the hang of this tonight," she insisted. "If Greta's eight-year-old granddaughter can do it, so can I."She picked up the needles again and concentrated under the watchful eye of the charge nurse until she'd successfully finished the first row of what she hoped would eventually be a scarf."Not bad," Greta said. "Now just do that about four hundred more times and you might have enough for a decent-sized scarf."Devin groaned. Already, she was wishing she had stuck to reading the latest medical journals to pass the time instead of trying to knit yet again."I've got to go back to my office and finish the schedule for next month," Greta said. "Keep going and remember—ten rows a day keeps the psychiatrist away."Devin laughed but didn't look up from the stitches."How do you always pick the slowest nights to fill in?" Callie asked after Greta left the nurses' station."I have no idea. Just lucky, I guess."It wasn't exactly true. Her nights weren't always quiet. The past few times she had substituted for the regular emergency department doctors at Lake Haven Hospital had been low-key like this one, but that definitely wasn't always the case. A month earlier, she worked the night of the first snowfall and had been on her feet all night, between car accidents, snow shovel injuries and a couple of teenagers who had taken a snowmobile through a barbed-wire fence.Like so much of medicine, emergency medicine was all a roll of the dice.Devin loved her regular practice as a family physician in partnership with Russell Warrick, who had been her own doctor when she was a kid. She loved having a day-to-day relationship with her patients and the idea that she could treat an entire family from cradle to grave.Even so, she didn't mind filling in at the emergency department when the three rotating emergency medicine physicians in the small hospital needed an extra hand. The challenge and variety of it exercised her brain and sharpened her reflexes—except tonight, when the only thing sharp seemed to be these knitting needles that had become her nemesis. She was on her twelfth row when she heard a commotion out in the reception area."We need a doctor here, right now.""Can you tell me what's going on?" Devin heard the receptionist ask in a calm voice.Devin didn't wait around to hear the answer. She and Callie both sprang into action. Though the emergency department usually followed triage protocol, with prospective patients screened by one of the certified nurse assistants first to determine level of urgency, that seemed superfluous when the newcomers were the only patients here. By default, they automatically moved to the front of the line, since there wasn't one.She walked through the doorway to the reception desk and her initial impression was of a big, tough-looking man, a very pregnant woman in one of the hospital wheelchairs and a couple of scared-looking kids."What's the problem?""Are you a doctor?" the man demanded. "I know how emergency rooms work. You tell your story to a hundred different people before you finally see somebody who can actually help you. I don't want to go through that."She gave a well-practiced smile. "I'm Dr. Shaw, the attending physician here tonight. What seems to be the problem?""Devin? Is that you?"The pregnant woman looked up and met her gaze and Devin immediately recognized her. "Tricia!Hello."Tricia Barrett had been a friend in high school, though she hadn't seen her in years. Barrett had been her maiden name, anyway. Devin couldn't remember the last name of the man she married."Hi," Tricia said, her features pale and her arms tight on the armrests of the wheelchair. "I would say it's great to see you again, but, well, not really, under these circumstances. No offense."Devin stepped closer to her and gave her a calming smile. "None taken. Believe me, I get it. Why don't you tell me what's going on."Tricia shifted in the wheelchair. "Nothing. Someone is overreacting.""She slipped on a patch of ice about an hour ago and hurt her ankle." The man with her overrode her objections. "I'm not sure it's broken but she needs an X-ray."At first she thought he might be Tricia's husband but on closer inspection, she recognized him, only because she'd seen him around town here and there over the past few years.Cole Barrett, Tricia's older brother, was a rather hard man to overlook—six feet two inches of gor-geousness, with vivid blue eyes, sinfully long eyelashes and sun-streaked brown hair usually hidden by a cowboy hat.He had been wild back in the day, if she remembered correctly, and still hadn't lost that edgy, bad-boy outlaw vibe.In a small community like Haven Point, most people knew each other—or at least knew of each other. She hadn't met the man but she knew he lived in the mountains above town and that he had inherited a sprawling, successful ranch from his grandparents. If memory served, he had once been some kind of hotshot rodeo cowboy. With that afternoon shadow and his wavy brown hair a little disordered, he looked as if he had just climbed either off a horse or out of some lucky woman's bed. Not that it was any of her business. Disreputable cowboys were definitely not her type.Devin dismissed the man from her mind and focused instead on her patient, where her attention should have been in the first place."Have you been able to put weight on your ankle?""No, but I haven't really tried. This is all so silly," Tricia insisted. "I'm sure it's not broken."She winced suddenly, her face losing another shade or two of color, and pressed a hand to her abdomen.Devin didn't miss the gesture and her attention sharpened. "How long have you been having contractions?""I'm sure they're only Braxton Hicks.""How far along are you?""Thirty-four weeks. With twins, if you couldn't tell by the basketball here."Her brother frowned. "You're having contractions? Why didn't you say anything?""Because you're already freaking out over a stupid sprained ankle. I didn't want to send you into total panic mode.""What's happening?" the girl said. "What are contractions?""It's something a woman's body does when she's almost ready to have a baby," Tricia explained."Are you having the babies tonight?" she asked, big blue eyes wide. "I thought they weren't supposed to be here until after Christmas.""I hope not," Tricia answered. "Sometimes I guess you have practice contractions. I'm sure that's what these are."For the first time, she started to look uneasy and Devin knew she needed to take control of the situation."I don't want to send you up to Obstetrics until we take a look at the ankle. We can hook up all the fetal monitoring equipment down here in the emergency department to see what's going on and put your minds at ease.""Thanks. I'm sure everything's fine. I'm going to be embarrassed for worrying everyone.""Never worry about that," Devin assured her."I'm sorry to bother you, but I need to get some information so we can enter it into the computer and make an ID band." Brittney Calloway, the receptionist, stepped forward, clipboard in hand."My insurance information is in my purse," Tricia said. "Cole, can you find it and give her what she needs?"He looked as if he didn't want to leave his sister's side but the little boy was already looking bored.Whose were they? The girl looked to be about eight, blonde and ethereal like Tricia but with Cole's blue eyes, and the boy was a few years younger with darker coloring and big brown eyes. She hadn't heard the man had kids—in fact, as far as she knew, he had lived alone at Evergreen Springs the past two years since his grandmother died."You can come back to the examination room after you're done out here, or you can stay out in the waiting room."He looked at the children and then back at his sister, obviously torn. "We'll wait out here, if you think you'll be okay.""I'll be fine," she assured him. "I'm sorry to be such a pain."He gave his sister a soft, affectionate smile that would have made Devin's knees go weak, if she weren't made of sterner stuff. "You're not a pain. You're just stubborn," he said gruffly. "You should have called me the minute you fell instead of waiting until I came back to the house and you definitely should have said something about the contractions.""We'll take care of her and try to keep you posted.""Thanks." He nodded and shepherded the two children to the small waiting room, with his sister's purse in hand.Devin forced herself to put him out of her mind and focus on her patient.Normally, the nurses and aides would take a patient into a room and start a chart but since she knew Tricia and the night was slow, Devin didn't mind coming into her care from the beginning."You're thirty-three weeks?" she asked as she pushed her into the largest exam room in the department."Almost thirty-four. Tuesday.""With twins. Congratulations. Are they fraternal or identical?""Fraternal. A boy and a girl. The girl is measuring bigger, according to my ob-gyn back in California.""Did your OB clear you for travel this close to your due date?""Yes. Everything has been uncomplicated. A textbook pregnancy, Dr. Adams said.""When was your last appointment?""I saw my regular doctor the morning before Thanksgiving. She knew I was flying out to spend the holiday with Cole and the kids. I was supposed to be back the next Sunday, but, well, I decided to stay."She paused and her chin started to quiver. "Everything is such a mess and I can't go home and now I've sprained my ankle. How am I going to get around on crutches when I'm as big as a barn?"Something else was going on here, something that had nothing to do with sprained ankles. Why couldn't she go home? Devin squeezed her hand. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves.""No. You're right." Tricia drew a breath. When she spoke her voice only wobbled a little. "I have an appointment Monday for a checkup with a local doctor. Randall or Crandall or something like that. I can't remember. I just know my records have been transferred there.""Randall. Jim Randall."He was one of her favorite colleagues in the area, compassionate and kind and more than competent. Whenever she had a complicated obstetrics patient in her family medicine practice, she sent her to Jim.As Devin guided Tricia from the wheelchair to the narrow bed in the room, the pregnant woman paused on the edge, her hand curved around her abdomen and her face contorted with pain. She drew in a sharp breath and let it out slowly. "Ow. That was a big one."And not far apart from the first contraction she'd had a few minutes earlier, Devin thought in concern, her priorities shifting as Callie came in. "Here we are. This is Callie. She's an amazing nurse and right now she's going to gather some basic information and help you into a gown. I'll be back when she's done to take a look at things."Tricia grabbed her hand. "You'll be back?""In just a moment, I promise. I'm going to write orders for the X-ray and the fetal heartbeat monitoring and put a call in to Dr. Randall. I'll also order some basic urine and blood tests, too, then I'll be right back.""Okay. Okay." Tricia gave a wobbly smile. "Thanks. I can't tell you how glad I am that you're here.""I'm not going anywhere. I promise."

This is the story of Devin Shaw and Cole Barrett.Devin is a doctor, who lives in her childhood home with her two cats. She is a strong and compassionate woman with many friends. She is also a cancer survivor, which still greatly impacts her life.Cole Barrett is, in his own mind, a "struggling, out-of-his-depth single father". He avoids going into town because he believes that people whisper behind his back that he's an ex-con, washed up disaster. He is all of those things, but he's also a loving father to his children, Jazmyn and Ty, and a wonderfully overprotective brother to Tricia. They meet when Cole brings his sister to the emergency room. Tricia and Devin were in school together, so they have an instant rapport. Devin learns that Cole is in a bind with his kids and has no one to take care of them while he works. Devin shows up at his home with enough food, cooked by friendly townspeople, to feed him and his kids for a month. She proceeds to build snowmen, decorate his house for Christmas, entertain Jazmyn and Ty and burrow her way into Cole's heart. Devin and Cole have issues to work through, but they have enough love in their hearts to give to everyone around them and each other.Evergreen Springs is a wonderful holiday book that will be added to my list to read again in December. In fact, I enjoyed this book so much that I one-clicked books one and two in the series almost immediately.

Roberts What a joyful way to dream of Christmas, with white snow falling over the mountains and Lake Haven, located in Haven Point, Idaho. Evergreen Springs is no exception, with the fir trees, barns, horses, farm house, and one that also has hot mineral springs. Cole has two children, ages 8 and 6, to care for full time, as his ex-wife is now deceased, and he hardly ever had the chance to see them in their young life. With his busy farm life, he is stressed, has been a loner for many years, and has been very hard on himself due to his past, not so innocent life. His sister, Tricia, pregnant with twins, has left her husband back in California and is staying with them to help Cole with both his daughter, Jazmyn, and his son, Ty. A fall sends her to the hospital, and due to the late stages of her pregnancy, she has to stay until her son and daughter are born. Devin, a general practice physician, works at the hospital and there, Cole and Devin meet. There are so many incidences that have taken place in both Cole's and Devin's life. Both are broken in their own way. Read this beautiful novel. There are many fun, loving, caring people that live in the area. I fell in love with the characters, and it is written with love.
