A powerful witch, Piotr Russell has resigned himself to loneliness, because ordinary humans can’t know what he is, and other witches are intimidated by his abilities. Generations of Russells have lived and died with only their familiars at their side. The presence of a friendly familiar is enough to keep even the loneliest witch sane, and yet Piotr deliberately hasn’t chosen one. He forces himself to keep busy instead, but the emptiness of his house haunts him even more the spirit of Great-Great-Aunt Elysia in the parlor. With Samhain and Halloween approaching, he’ll have much to do, and knowing that, his concerned coven seizes the chance to intervene and sends help to his door in the form of Bartleby Dorchester. The rarest of rare jewels, Bartleby is a human familiar: a witch with no magic of his own, and a desire to find a strong witch to help and serve. In particular, he desires to help and serve Piotr, and everything in Piotr wants to let him. Bartleby was meant to be his familiar; Piotr knows it as surely as he knows when it will rain or when the apples in his garden will ripen. But what Piotr wants from Bartleby, all he’s ever wanted, is for Bartleby to love him, something he thinks is impossible. Russells live and die unloved, and he won’t allow Bartleby to feel obligated to spend his life with him as his familiar if he could be happy in love with someone else. But Samhain is a time for change, when walls come down and borders grow thin, and Bartleby isn’t going to waste what might be his last chance to convince Piotr that they were meant to be. He might have no magic, but love is a power all its own.

Everything I ever wanted By LobsterPhone Delicious baking things, wild weather, the house of my dreams complete with a ghost, a raven and a bewitched garden...and the longing... *happy sigh*. I loved this so much. While the focus is firmly in Piotr's house and his interactions with Bartleby and the non-human occupants, their history and community is still very vivid and present in the background and their motivations. There are no real surprises in the plot and their feelings are pretty clear (to us) from the first time we see them together but this just let me wallow around in the atmosphere and relish every step to understanding each other. Definitely a case of if they'd just had a simple conversation at some point this could have gone a lot easier, but it's easy to see how their own unique situations affected their perspective.

The story telling was great, it flowed really well and the details were spot on. Made you feel like you were there. I wanted to slap the main character upside the head, for being so smart and powerful he was a bit of a dunce. But he got his HEA in the end. over all a good read. Definitely worth the $1

Also witches By Alix A Halloween story full of wistful longing and misunderstanding and love. Also witches, familiars, pumpkins and apple cider. The characters are vivid and relatable. This adorable little seasonal story is about death of what was and rebirth and new beginnings. I recommend it to anyone who loves autumn, witches, or pining.

Losing Weight With Smoothies

There is an important fact you need to know when it comes to losing weight using smoothies. You have to be very careful about the other foods you are consuming along with smoothies. This is due to the fact that some smoothies will be high in fruit sugars and the last thing you want to do is combine that with fatty unhealthy foods. That is a great recipe for getting fatter not losing weight.

Smoothies are not some miracle fat burner but work in conjunction with healthy eating. They work great for meal replacements or for people who just cannot eat enough vegetables. Vegetables are a weight loss plan's best friend so you want to get chummy with them. The point is if you think you can just add a couple smoothies a day and the fat will just melt off you have been misled.

When using smoothie recipes to help you lose weight ensure you keep an accurate count of the calories you are consuming. Healthy or not a couple extra thousand calories a day from smoothies plus your regular food will seriously impede your ability to lose weight.

With the provided weight loss plan you will know exactly how many calories you will need to be putting into your body for maximum weight loss.

Variety Is Key

101 smoothie recipes may sound like a lot but we both know you won't love them all. You should buy a few smoothie recipe books in order to have enough variety that you stick to your goals. Whether that is going green, improving your health or losing weight you will get bored drinking the same thing day in and day out.

When you include variety in your diet it safeguards you against nutritional deficiencies and makes life a lot more interesting. Even if you want to lose weight that does not mean you need to stop enjoying food and life.

The main benefit of including smoothies in your lifestyle is the fact you are consuming more fruits and vegetables. In a society where we live a processed life it can seem difficult to consume enough healthy food.

Terrific everything-you-need-to-know book full of Smoothie recipes By Vikk Simmons Wiggins has provided a really good book with a ton of recipes to try. I bought the book and have gone over the recipes and content and I'm really happy with what I've seen. Can't wait to begin trying the recipes. They are wide-ranging and reflect a variety of benefits from antioxidants to detoxing to digestive health and energy boosters. The Inflammation Booster is one I plan to try. There's even a Chocolate and Acai Booster that sounds pretty good. My mom would have loved the Delicious Date and Walnut Delight. There's a lot to choose from so I don't expect to tire of smoothies any time soon. I also like the section at the back that Wiggins provided on how to incorporate these smoothies into a weight-loss plan. Good content, great range of smoothies, all in all a good book.

Great understanding of the smoothie "process" By June Barnwell As a smoothie nerd, this added some great new recipes to my collection but what I appreciated most was the author talking about how getting into smoothies isn't a one-time thing. When you are new to smoothies, several things may put you off - the color, the ingredients, the texture. Smoothies are so different from the rest of our diet in this way. I know drinking my first green smoothie took me a long time to work up to. Explaining this at the beginning of the book and how our tastes change so that ingredients that seem gross end up tasting delicious demonstrated how the author knows his stuff and is reassuring for a first time smoothie drinker.

By Cathy Wilson Smoothie Recipes is an impressive recipe book that can help you get your mind and body energized and ready to zap fat. I love the fact that Wiggins explained the benefits of each recipe before diving in. Helps you understand why you should be drinking each yummy smoothie!I will say there are some you need to watch for the calorie count, if you are aiming to lose weight. Pushing 800 calories with one serving adds up fast. I was happy to see the majority ring between 200 and 400ish calories. Same as a mini meal would.Bottom line is this smoothie recipe book needs to be added to your book collection! Bravo!

Holding the nozzle, she listened as the liquid gold rushed into her car's fuel tank. Having just arrived in town, her empty gas tank sucked it in. She figured she should fill up before going home. After Mom's frantic phone call late last night, there was no telling when she might get another chance.Home. A white-frame house with blue trim in Bartlett, Idaho. The small logging town where Jill had been raised. So small, it didn't even warrant a single traffic light. Population eight hundred and thirty-nine.Almost everyone here earned their livelihood off of the lush ponderosa pine that blanketed the broad-shouldered mountains surrounding the town. Jill's family included."Hi, Jill!"Lifting her gaze, she looked past the blue pickup truck parked behind her car. Harvey Garson stood outside his grocery store across the deserted street, watering a clay pot filled with purple pansies. The bright flowers did little to hide the peeling paint of his shabby two-story building. Several empty offices lined Main Street, their vacant windows filled with dust and cobwebs. The poor economy hadn't been easy on this community. The bank and county courthouse down the road were new, complete with tan stucco and wide garden boxes planted with yellow tulips. The only modern buildings in town.Jill waved and forced herself to sound cheerful."Hello, there.""You in town long?" Harvey yelled as water cascaded from the spout of his watering can.She hoped not. But that depended on Mom and Alan, her younger brother by two years. "Just a few days, I think.""Hopefully we'll see you at church on Sunday." With another wave, Harvey set the watering can beside the flowerpot and slipped back inside his dingy store.Jill released a sigh of relief, glad the conversation had ended. She hoped she wasn't in town long enough to attend church. She was not staying in this one-dog town any longer than necessary. The dreaded third degree she received from old friends every time she came home was extra incentive not to stick around. You couldn't expect much less in a place this size. Everyone knew everyone else and considered them family. They meant well, but she had no desire to share her life with them. Or explain about her adulterous husband and recent divorce. The pain still felt too raw.Just then, Larry Newton, a boy she'd graduated from high school with, drove by and honked his horn. At the age of twenty-eight, he wasn't a boy anymore. Not with a wife and two kids.Forcing a smile to her lips, Jill lifted her hand. She couldn't help feeling that true love and a family of her own had passed her by. After five years of marriage, she'd discovered her ex-husband had cheated on her. Not once, but many times. And then the harshest blow yet. He'd said he never really loved her at all. What a fool she'd been. So trusting. So naive. But no more. She was an educated professional woman with a special education career she loved. She didn't need a man. She didn't need anyone. Or at least, she kept telling herself that. The cumbersome nozzle clicked off and Jill lifted it back into the holding bracket. With a few quick twists of her wrist, she put the cap back on her gas tank. She was determined not to let the cruelty of the past destroy her future. Determined to enjoy her summer break. Maybe being home was the distraction she needed. She wanted consistency in her life. Boring could be good sometimes. And nothing much ever changed in Bartlett.Nothing except her.Stepping past the melee of pumps and a tall garbage can, she headed toward the small convenience store to pay her bill."Evie! Wait!"A man's frantic yell drew Jill's attention toward the store. Ignoring the man's plea, a blond-haired girl who looked about six dashed from the store and into the driveway.Out of her peripheral vision, Jill caught the streak of another car racing toward the child. Without thinking, she lunged into the driveway, scooped the girl into her arms and darted out of harm's way just in time. The driver slammed on his brakes, his car squealing in protest. Jill stood sandwiched between two gas pumps, clutching little Evie to her chest. The driver, a teenage boy with sandy brown hair and freckles, glared his disapproval, then sped on past.Jill stood there, breathing hard. The full impact of what had almost happened swept over her like a cold, drenching rain. Her heart pounded against her ribs. She tried to swallow, but a dry lump of cotton seemed to have lodged at the base of her throat. Her arms tightened around the little girl as she took a deep, settling breath. Trying to gather her thoughts. Trying to absorb that they were safe.No harm done."Are you okay?" Jill asked against the child's soft hair.Evie didn't speak. She fisted her hands around Jill's neck like a vise and gulped air into her lungs, hyperventilating with fear. Something had really set her off.Jill rubbed Evie's back. "Shh, it's okay. You're safe now."The girl didn't draw back to look at Jill. Didn't let go. Didn't move.Jill tried to set Evie on her feet, but she gave a pitiful whimper and held on tighter. She wrapped herself around Jill the way a baby gorilla hugs onto its mother. The girl's thin body trembled, her breath whooshing in and out of her lungs like a panicked ventilator. When Evie tucked her face against the curve of her neck, Jill's heart gave a powerful squeeze."Evie! Are you okay?" The man reached them, his startling blue eyes filled with panic.Taking a deep inhale, he reached for the girl. Evie tightened her arms around Jill's neck in a stranglehold. She wasn't ready to budge.Jill tried to pretend she didn't see the guarded hurt in the man's eyes, followed by an expression of vulnerability. If this was his daughter, Evie's rejection must sting him pretty hard."She's not letting go," Jill told him, a self-conscious laugh slipping from her throat.Taken off balance by the girl's weight, Jill tottered backward. She bumped against a bucket sitting beside the gas pump. Grimy water sloshed over the sides. A squeegee for washing windows bobbed around in the brackish liquid."I'm sorry about this." The man clasped Jill's arm to steady her before whisking the bucket out of her way. With Evie facing her and literally sitting in her lap, Jill slid down to the ground. She perched on the ledge of cement beside the two nearest gas pumps and tucked her sandaled feet back toward the island in case another car zipped past. The last thing she needed right now was a broken foot."Thank you for rescuing Evie." The man scooped up Jill's purse from out of the driveway and set it beside her. Then, he raked his fingers through his thick, dark hair, making it stand on end.The light stubble on his blunt chin showed that he hadn't shaved that morning. Not surprising, if he was a logger. But Jill knew almost everyone in town. This guy was new and she couldn't help wondering who he was."You're welcome." Jill sat there, stunned. Not knowing what to think about this odd situation she'd been thrust into. Thankfully, as a special-education teacher, her work with autistic and developmentally disabled children in the public school system had taught her patience. Now that Evie was out of danger, Jill knew what to do."Why don't we just sit here and catch our breath for a few moments?" she suggested. The man stepped past the island and leaned one broad shoulder against a gas pump. He towered over her in awkward silence, shifting restlessly, as though he didn't know what to do. Finally, he sat beside her and leaned his elbows on his knees. He stared at her sandals and pink-painted toes for several moments. His handsome mouth quirked into a nervous laugh."She hates gas stations," he said. "I shouldn't have taken her inside the store with me, but I couldn't leave her out in the truck all alone."Jill had no idea why a gas station would cause such an adverse reaction in a young child. For all she knew, Evie was throwing a temper tantrum after her father told her she couldn't buy a piece of candy. But Jill sensed it wasn't quite that simple. She turned her face toward the quivering child, speaking gently. "I hate gas stations, too. They're usually smelly, dirty places."The man shook his head, his beautiful blue eyes creased with sorrow. He opened and closed his mouth, as if he wanted to say something, but couldn't quite get the words out. Finally, he spoke quickly. "Actually, her mother was killed inside a gas station convenience store. That's why Evie doesn't like them."Jill's brain stumbled to a halt and she blinked her eyes. "Oh. I'm sorry to hear that."A surge of sympathy pinched her heart. Knowing this personal bit of information made her feel even more protective of Evie. At the same time, a barrage of questions pummeled Jill's mind. The special-education teacher in her rose to the forefront. She'd like to know more about Evie's problem but didn't think it was her place to ask."I'm Brent Knowles. Evie's father." The man thrust out one of his large, calloused hands.Jill lifted her right hand off Evie's back long enough for Brent to shake it. "My name's Jill. Glad to meet you.""I'm sorry to impose on you like this, Jill." Brent reached to take Evie again, his powerful fingers engulfing the girl's thin arms.In response, Evie's hold constricted around Jill's neck and she shook her head. She didn't want to leave yet."Let her stay with me for a few more minutes. She's still trembling," Jill said.Brent let go and didn't argue the point. Jill fought off a wave of discomfort. After all, these people were complete strangers to her. They were probably passing through town and had stopped to fill up their gas tank. But Evie's behavior wasn't normal for a child of her age. No, not at all."How old are you, Evie?" Jill spoke against the girl's warm cheek, trying to take her mind off whatever had upset her.No response.Jill tried again. "What grade are you in?"Still nothing."She doesn't speak. Not since her mother was killed last year during an armed robbery," Brent whispered reluctantly.Oh, dear. It seemed Evie's problem was more serious than Jill had first thought. And Jill couldn't suppress a desire to help. This was a unique situation she found herself in. Without hearing any more details, she would have diagnosed Evie with post-traumatic stress disorder. Of course, Jill wasn't a medical professional, but she was trained in how to help kids cope with difficult problems in their lives. Even if that didn't translate to her personal life. With her skill set, she should at least be able to manage her own woes. But she hadn't been able to. At least, not yet."Did you see what happened to your mom?" Jill whispered to Evie.In response, the child buried her face deeper against Jill's shoulder. That was answer enough. Jill had no doubt Evie was suffering from PTSD, brought on by witnessing her mother's violent death. Something no child should ever see. No doubt the trauma had caused Evie's selective mutism, too. The girl had been literally scared silent. It was bad enough for a kid to lose her mom, but to actually witness her mother's death made it even worse."Don't worry. You're safe now. We can sit here for as long as you like," Jill told the girl.Evie's hold on Jill's neck relaxed just a bit."You seem good with kids," Brent said. She nodded. "I have a master's degree in special education and teach for the Boise School District."His mouth went slack. "Evie isn't a special-ed kid. She's very intelligent. She just saw something really bad."He sounded defensive and Jill figured he'd dealt with people thinking Evie was mentally challenged because she wouldn't speak. Because of his protectiveness toward his daughter, Jill liked him immediately."I'm sure she's very smart. She's just experienced a terrible trauma, which is why she's chosen to be silent." Jill hugged the girl closer, wishing she could somehow shield Evie from being hurt again.Life could be so unkind."Most people don't understand. They think Evie should just get over it and start talking again," Brent said.Jill shrugged. "Well, I understand. Many disabled people are very bright. They simply have a unique issue they have to work through. And sometimes that takes a very long time. But most people are impatient creatures. They want answers now and aren't always willing to work for it."His blue eyes crinkled at the corners as he looked at her with awe. "You really do understand, don't you?"Jill smiled, thinking it all sounded so easy when she talked about it like this. But real life was actually a very messy affair. Not so easy when you had to wade through the muck and figure things out on your own. If God hadn't abandoned her after the divorce, she might not feel so alone now. But He had and she did."Are you from around here?" he asked."Yes, I grew up here and still consider it home. My family lives in town. Since the school year ended yesterday in Boise, and I'm off for the summer, I decided to come back for a visit.""Ah."For another five minutes, she sat there with Evie's very tall, muscular father hovering over her. She took a moment to study him without appearing to do so. Long legs sheathed in faded blue jeans and worn cowboy boots. He had startling blue eyes and saber-sharp cheekbones. Highly attractive. In his eyes, she saw his concern and anxiety—and all the love he had for his daughter. He was the kind of guy that made her think maybe love hadn't passed her by after all. That maybe she should reconsider dating and give love one more chance. No! She mentally shook her head, telling herself she wasn't interested. Not in any man. Not ever again. Her heart couldn't take it."Evie, can you be really brave and let go of me now?" Jill finally asked the girl.Evie drew back and gazed at her. She had a cute button nose and blue, translucent eyes identical to her father's."Do you feel better?" Jill asked her.Evie nodded, but she didn't speak. She simply looked deep into Jill's eyes, as though peering into her soul. Jill felt as though this innocent child were assessing each and every one of her flaws and determining if she was worthy of her trust.

She likes the stories with love interest but not into the sex content or violence or vampires or sci-fi, or - well, you get the idea.

He is trying to help his daughter who watched as her mother was murdered. She hasn't spoken since the event, and the only person who has ever been able to get through to her was Jill. She's in town to help her family - rumors are going around that her brother is being accused of stealing trees - and it just so happens that Brent is the one she's mad at.There is a hit of suspense in this book as Brent and Jill try to figure out who and what. It's one of those books that just gets to you - watching the little girl suffer and watching Jill kept left in the dark about what's really going on.The romance was okay. The ending was very sweet.

Stars! One of my favourite things about Christmas, is the plethora of Christmas novellas that we as readers have available to us now. It gives me a chance to experience Christmas, time and time again, with a large number of people, and feel the love and relationships grow for them as their stories are told, not to mention feel the seasonal spirit bloom inside myself as I fill my imagination with all things Christmassy. It is also a really good time to discover new authors, and Donna Alward falls into that category for me, and it was an extremely pleasant discovery. As was the town of Jewell Cove and its residents.Although a relatively short novella, nothing is lacking in Todd and Lainey’s story, they have known each other since school, but the timing has never been right in the past, for them to be anything other than friends. Until one massive snow storm leaves them stranded at Evergreen Inn together, and the chance to take things further is provided.”We’ll just have to figure it out one thing at a time.”Lainey having had her heart broken the previous Christmas is wary of romance, not to mention lacking in the spirit of the season, and Todd goes out of his way to help her make new and happier memories.I absolutely adored this couples coming together, having not read any of the previous books in the series (something I plan on rectifying very soon) I didn’t find it detrimental to Todd and Lainey’s story, and it can absolutely be read as a standalone.ARC generously provided via Netgalley, and it was my pleasure to provide the above honest review.

I cannot say that it is my favorite story by Donna Alward. This maybe because I did not become as invested in the character’s lives as I have with the longer books by her. I really wanted to know more about the handsome policeman Todd. Other than his ability to charm the girls through high school not much was told. In the same way mostly what I learned about Lainey is her break up at Christmas last year and how she runs the inn. The length limited what Ms. Alward could give us background wise. However, the present romance is well done even with Lainey’s over reactions. From that perspective Todd is wonderful if positively persistent. The Maine snow storm during the Christmas season is portrayed chillingly well, it makes one start thinking of fires in the fireplace, putting up decorations and celebrating with family traditions. (We’re still wearing shorts and sandals where I live, so I really liked the setting for the holidays.)Quickly the story ends once Todd and Lainey come to an understanding. I would like to see more but I did understand that this story captures a small moment in their lives. Still I’m hoping that in future books, glimpses of this couple will be given to the reader.3.75 StarsThe publisher through Net Galley provided a copy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A charming Christmas romance By Marsha @ Keeper Bookshelf Christmas was a difficult time for Lainey. There had been a time when she loved every single moment of this blessed and magical season. She’d gone so far as to plan a Christmas wedding to combine her personal memories with the season. The wedding never happened, cancelled just days before Christmas. Now this season is a reminder of what never was, of how love could turn on you at a moment and leave you alone and yes, bitter. But since Lainey’s business meant that she was surrounded by the joy and excitement of this holiday she’d learned to pretend a happiness that she never felt. If this season wasn’t one of the most profitable ones she would have been happy to hibernate through the winter months.Todd firmly believes in his job to protect and serve – and if that means that his day off is spent helping out travelers caught in the snowstorm, so be it. It’s Christmas after all and no one wants to be stuck out in the weather and far from their destination. Yet that is exactly what will happen to Todd this wintery storm night. Unable to make it back home safely, Todd is ironically turned away from the fully booked Evergreen Inn. Thanks to the kindness of Lainey, he’s at least got a spot on the couch of her tiny cabin for the night… and maybe a future that’s magical as well.Christmas at Evergreen Inn is a sweet, charming holiday romance between two people who know of each other, but come together with no real past – aside from the memories they bring with them. Sometimes memories, especially bad ones are the most difficult things to fight when one person sees the possibilities of a lasting love and the other only has reminders of what can be lost, again. Todd and Lainey have that special spark, now he just has to convince her that love is always worth a second try, that the gain is worth the risks with the right person.I enjoyed this Christmas novella very much. Even though it is part of an ongoing series, I don’t feel you have to have followed Jewell Cove to enjoy this romance… of course, it’s better if you have but not totally necessary. The romance is charming and believable, the secondary characters always delightful. This is one that will warm up that special Christmas reading spot for you this year and many years to come.*I received an e-ARC of Christmas at Evergreen Inn from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*

Where is Western culture going? What should Christians think about it? Those who already ask these questions often come up with confused answers. Those who do not are, arguably, living in a fool's paradise (or a fool's hell.) In this second edition of Subversive Christianity, Brian Walsh returns to the themes of cultural discernment that he unpacked more than twenty years ago. In a new Postscript, Walsh revisits Francis Fukuyama, Bruce Cockburn, and the prophet Jeremiah and asks, Where are we now? In light of 9/11 and the world economic crisis of 2008, how do we discern the times, and what does that discernment tell us about the calling of the church? "Brian Walsh tackles the central issues head on in this powerful little book. He is well-equipped to do so. On the one hand, he has studied contemporary culture--and a wide range of Christian discussions of it--in great depth. We are here given, in easily accessible form, the fruits of many years of patient academic work. He has also drunk deeply from biblical theology, and provides clear and creative exegesis of several passages in a way which breathes new life into them. Walsh brings together the Bible and the modern world in a way which is as original as it is compelling." --From the foreword by N.T. Wright, University of St. Andrews. Brian Walsh is a Christian Reformed campus minister at the University of Toronto. He is the author of Kicking at the Darkness: Bruce Cockburn and the Christian Imagination, and coauthor of Beyond Homelessness: Christian Faith in a Culture of Displacement (with Steven Bouma-Prediger), Colossians Remixed: Subverting the Empire (with Sylvia Keesmaat), and Truth Is Stranger Than It Used to Be (with J. Richard Middleton).

By Amazon Customer For a relatively short and quite accessible book the scope of the sociological and theological analysis of our current state as the church as well as the extensive biblical grounds for an engagement with a subversive posture and practice as followers of Jesus is quite expansive. I found this book to be a very helpful consolidation of the topic that did not lose the "good stuff" in the process.I would suggest reading this before diving into Ellul or Tolstoy. Though much broader in potential appeal and application I would place this on every would be Christian anarchist's reading list. This is a helpful 'corrective' for any sincere follower of Jesus who suspects they may be bogged down in Western cultural values and assumptions.

Maritain considers the intuitive or pre-philosophic approach and the famous five ways to God of St. Thomas Aquinas incorporated with recent progress in thought and science. Finally, he proposes a ''sixth way, based on the spiritual nature of the intellect, and deals with poetic creativeness, moral experience, and the testimony of the heroes of moral life. In his accessible but thought-provoking work, he shows in profoundly reasoned and beautifully written arguments the value of each approach for there are as many paths to God as there are roads to the human heart. It is valuable to have such a clear statement, written with charm and charity, of the Roman Catholic approach to the reality of God. Even those who do not share this particular kind of philosophical theism will find a study of M. Maritain's work rewarding.... The New York Times, Oct. 31, 1954

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Evidence for God By Gerard Reed Thomists like Jacques Maritain insist there are good, rational reasons for believing God exists. That view is most clearly stated in his Approaches to God, tr. Peter O'Reilly (New York: Collier Books, 1962). This is Volume One in the World Perspectives Series, edited by Ruth Nanda Anshen, which published a series of short treatises by the world's most acclaimed scholars. Maritain first argues for "the primordial way," the "natural or prephilosophic knowledge of God." We just know, deep in our being, that there's a God who sustains our being. I never seriously question my own existence. I also know I have only recently come into being. And I know that "There is another Whole--a separate, another Being, transcendent and self-sufficient and unknown in itself and activating all beings, which is Being-without-nothingness, that is, self-subsisting Being, Being existing through itself" (p. 20).This immediate awareness serves as the foundation for St Thomas Aquinas' famous "five ways" to "prove" of "demonstrate" that God exists. If, like Aristotle and most common sense philosophers, you accept as self-evident the reality of causation, these five cosmological arguments enable you to persuasively demonstrate the necessity of "a cause which is pure Act or Being, itself subsistent in its own right" (p. 33), which indwells the various phenomena we encounter. First, we see all around us things which move. Our world is continually becoming. No one doubts that electrons and planets continually move. And we also know that balls fly through the air when thrown or hit with a bat. So "if there were not a First Agent, the reason for the action of all the others would never be posited in existence; nothing would move anything. One cannot regress from agent to agent without end; it is necessary to stop at a First Agent" (p. 35). Second, the world at hand contains efficient causes. Houses get built when builders (efficient causes) do their work. For the universe to be, and to be explainable, it needs, underlying all the efficient causes we discern, a First Cause which is "first" in sense of creating everything ex nihilo. Third, there is the argument from the contingent and necessary. The world in flux demonstrates contingency. Things come and go; nothing on the material plane is demonstrably constant or eternal. Yet if, only for a moment, something truly is, it reveals a necessary being which allows contingent beings to be. Were all things truly contingent, obviously nothing could never be! Fourth, there are evident degrees in things, qualitative levels of perfection in such things as goodness, love, life, truth, knowledge, and beauty. For us to have any reason to judge something better than something else, we must assume there is, "somewhere, a supreme degree or a maximum (a most)" (p. 51). Here, Maritain says, "the noble Augustinian approach, which rises to God through eternal truths, finds its normal place" (p. 56). Fifth, one reasons to God by virtue of the governance of things. The cosmos seems, to all but dogmatic materialists, to have purpose. As our minds grasp its workings, we almost automatically know it's guided by some supernatural Intelligence. If, as C.S. Lewis so persuasively suggested, we see a garden which seems continually weeded and tilled, full of ordered rows of nutritious plants, most of us assume there's a gardener at work--even if we never physically see him. As Maritain explains and defends St Thomas' five "proofs," he up-dates and effectively demonstrates their perennial validity as metaphysical stratagems. Then he adds a "sixth" possibility, one he found more and more attractive as he pondered it: an intuition regarding "the natural spirituality of intelligence" (p. 70). With my mind I easily transcend the limits of time and space; in my mind I am almost as infinite as the universe. As an intellectual being, I am dramatically distinct from the material world I apprehend--if not, I could only, like a computer, process the flow of data which happens to enter my neurological system. Thus I know, while I think, that I am a spiritual being. But I also know that I have not always existed. So I must, as a spiritual being, be rooted "in a Being of transcendent personality" in Whom my personality has definition and reality. Having discussed some of the "approaches to God" of the speculative intellect, Maritain then turns to some of the ways of the practical intel¬lect. Whenever we see beauty, we encounter "a transcendental, a perfection in things which transcends things and attests their kinship with the infinite, because it makes them fit, to give joy to the spirit" (p. 79). There is a certain eternality in great music and poetry which suggests its tie to some Ultimate Reality. Our moral experience also, on a practical level, points us to God. For unless we are free, as moral beings, to choose what's good, there's no real morality. Yet as we reflect on the reality of personal freedom we find ourselves rooted in a transcendent realm which grants and guarantees it. "God is thus naturally known, without any conscious judgment, in and by the impulse of the will striving toward the Separate Good, whose existence is implicitly involved in the practical value acknowledged to the moral good" (p. 88). Finally, Maritain argues, in accord with Aristotle's dictum, that natural appetites have realizable ends. The fact that we're thirsty proves, rather persuasively, that real liquids exist to slake that thirst. Similarly, since mankind has forever hungered and thirsted for God, there must be a Reality to which that appetite is directed. Though it demands careful attention, Approaches to God is not overly difficult to read. It was written for the general reader and enables anyone who desires to master its basic arguments.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Challenging read with interesting insights By bronx book nerd I found this book for the most part challenging to read. It requires slow and thoughtful reading as Maritain presents his theory of how people come to know, believe in and understand God. He begins by saying that people basically have an intuitive, pre-philosophical grasp that God exists. This is triggered by sensory awareness of beautiful and inspiring things. The next step in understanding involves philosophical understanding which Maritain considers to be Aquinas' five proofs for God. Maritain takes each proof and elaborates through them in his own style. By doing so he reinforces the traditional teaching of the proof while sometimes adding new and insightful perspectives. For example, he notes that all ends must exist in an intellect so inanimate things that have an end must have that end existing in a mind. Another example is his explanation that randomness presupposes something that is not random. This is a different response to the idea that the world evolved out of random events. Maritain concludes with a discussion of knowing God as he is, which he notes is impossible with on a natural level but possible on a supernatural level. He does veer a bit into some Eastern mysticism when he explains how a person's soul existed before he or she was actualized by God in nature. He is on the edge of error here where one can take his writing to suggest that a person is eternally one with God, although I do not think that his subtle and nuanced argument ultimately does not make that claim.

For almost fifty years, much has been written concerning Mark 16:9 20. During the same time period, evidence once counted against Mark 16:9 20 was shown to be otherwise. In this study, David W. Hester surveys modern scholarship (1965-2011) surrounding the passage. He examines the passage itself the external evidence, with particular attention paid to the manuscripts and the patristics, especially those of the second and third centuries; and the internal evidence, featuring details that are problematic as well as those that favor Markan authorship. Finally, a proposal concerning the origin of the passage is presented. The first edition of Mark s Gospel ended at 16:8, resulting in the manuscript tradition that omits the passage, but this was not his intended ending. Later, his associates attached Mark s notes and published a second edition of the Gospel with the last twelve verses. This led to its inclusion. Given that the passage is cited by second- and third-century witnesses and attributed to Mark, along with the biblical prohibition against adding to or taking from Scripture, it is doubtful that an anonymous second-century author could have been successful in adding his own composition and it being widely accepted by the early church.

Does Mark 16:9-20 Belong in the New Testament?, by David W. Hester

Review ''Dr. Hester's position on Mark 16:9-20 differs from the prevailing view that these twelve verses are not part of the original Gospel of Mark. After setting forth his arguments against their authenticity, he passionately presents the case for the other side--citing evidence he is convinced will persuade the open-minded critic that to omit these verses is to omit a part of Scripture.'' --Rodney E. Cloud, Dean of the Turner School of Theology, Amridge University''Though covering well-worn ground, Dr. Hester highlights historical clues often overlooked or even ignored. If Mark 16:9-20 was added to the text, then why did no early Christian writer ever voice any opposition? Why did the early church tacitly accept these verses as canonical? This careful and thorough review of the ancient evidence and of modern scholarship helped me reexamine the whole question afresh.''--David H. Warren, Associate Professor of Biblical Studies, Faulkner University --Wipf and Stock Publishers

About the Author David W. Hester is Lecturer for the V. P. Black College of Biblical Studies and the F. Furman Kearley Graduate School of Theology at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama. He is the director of the Faulkner Bible Lectureship, and the author of two books: Among the Scholars (1994) and Tampering With Truth (2007).

By LemmonsAid Actually, the hard work of reading a book based upon a very technical dissertation is not all that much FUN. However, reading Dr. Hester's book was enjoyable to me because I was confident there would be interesting findings at the end (the reward). Also, I knew Dr. Hester had a very high view of Scripture.Dr. Hester, in his introduction, tells about his Critical Introduction to the New Testament Class being the genesis of his study on the ending of Mark. I sat in that same class at the same institution three years earlier. The ending of Mark has always been of interest to me, as well.I am so thankful for the detail that has been included (even includes photographs of some key Greek manuscripts). Footnotes abound. The bibliography is extensive.I am so thankful that Dr. Hester read the book, PERSPECTIVES ON THE ENDING OF MARK: 4 VIEWS, because he says this book convinced him to get back into the study of Mark's ending after 20 years had passed. I have had a Kindle copy of that book for about ten months now, so I plan to get that book read as well.I believe Dr. Hester's "Proposal Concerning the Origin of Mark 16.9-20" (chapter 4 of the book) is a valid and well-reasoned solution. I recommend that you read the book to find what that proposal was.Excellent work!

While I would classify the book as an academic endeavor in the field of Biblical Studies, this should not deter any Christian from owning a copy. Hester did a great job of merging just the right amount of scholarly debate in terms that every person with a twelth grade education should be able to understand. What was most profitable about this book was the extensive history of the issue at hand. Equally important was a thorough examination of the actual manuscripts and detailed explanation of the Greek text for the proposed different endings of Mark. This book would be excellent for any academic class or investigative Christian looking to shore up their beliefs on a very important subject.

I really loved all of the prayers By suzy q I really loved all of the prayers, as usual...and the supporting Bible verses.....I also loved the unique way that the author illustrates examples of faith from famous Bible stories of great men from the past who were inspired by Christ, such as David...as well relating the incredible real life story of his nephew Luke's battle with cancer. And although in his battle, Luke lost his life here on earth, he gained the greatest gift before he left...the gift of faith which allowed him to receive Christ into his life.
