Divorce doesn't have to be devastating. Reject the idea that you'll be damaged by the process. In fact, if you do it right, you'll grow from the experience. You'll start your new life better than you were before.

Divorce is difficult. There's no avoiding the emotional, financial, and legal challenges associated with divorce. Each member of the family will be marked by the experience in one way or another.

What we've learned, through working with thousands of families going through divorce, is that some people come out of the experience devastated. For them, wallowing in the aftermath for years becomes the norm. Their divorce impacts their day-to-day life for decades after the end of the marriage. Many of these people never let go of the negativity surrounding the end of their marriage.

Other people have a different experience of divorce. They bounce back. They cope with the process as it happens and then they recover. These people move on to live bigger and better lives. They're happier, healthier, and more prosperous than in the past. They enter into new relationships, and they thrive. They don't deny the challenge presented by the divorce, but they don't let it define the rest of their lives.

How is it that people can be impacted so differently by a divorce? We're not experts in psychology; we're lawyers. But, we've absorbed some lessons as we've observed our clients going through this process.

We've found that some people learn from their divorce. They gain new insights. They turn the negatives into positives by maturing and evolving. We think the've figured out the way to divorce smartly. We wrote this audiobook to help you divorce in a smart way.

This book made divorce a lot less daunting, especially the part about separation agreements. It was very helpful. It really opened my eyes about the whole thing. I'd definitely refer anyone planning on getting a divorce to this book.

However it was full of information that could potentially help you if you're thinking of divorcing or you're in the early stages of a divorce.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent reading! By PammyD This book provides a great deal of information for anyone that may be in this situation. The title of the book definitely fits the information inside (the end of a marriage is NOT the end of the world). I would highly recommend this book!

Best Ebook Divorce in Missouri: The Ultimate Guide to a Show-Me State Divorce, by Alan Freed, Alisse Camazine, John Pavese

This is the original Divorce in Missouri that has received state-wide praise from judges, lawyers, clients and the Missouri Bar Magazine. Now completely updated with all the latest information. Don t be fooled by a book that copied the Divorce in Missouri title, but does not come close to delivering the quality of detailed, user friendly information that has made the original Divorce in Missouri so popular and respected by everyone. This easy to read and understand book explains the divorce laws of the Show-Me State and suggests strategies that can result in a successful settlement. It now includes information on how divorce can affect non-US citizen permanent residents. This is not a book that generally covers divorce for all 50 states. It gives clear and detailed information only about the things a Missourian considering a divorce needs to know. Every page is focused just on the laws, processes and likely judgments by a Missouri court if a settlement cannot be reached. Table of Contents Introduction Authors' Note Chapters: 1. Grounds for Divorce, 2. Missouri's Divorce Process, 3. Finding and Using a Lawyer, 4. Mediation, 5. Collaborative Divorce, 6. Legal and Physical Custody, 7. Child Support, 8. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Guide for those who need it! By Kindle Customer This book is a wonderful guide for those working through a divorce. It does caution those going through a divorce to try to solve problems before coming in front of the judge. This is very wise. It gives many suggestions for the person seeking a divorce to think about. What it doesn't tell is, the judges in Missouri can be very partial to one side of the divorce. It does not say what attorneys know, a judge can take away a parent's visiting rights for no reason. That is the only flaw for the book.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Read this BEFORE you file for divorce. You will save time and money. By Jennifer Bahr This book is a must read if you are either getting divorced or thinking about it in Missouri. In fact, I would recommend you read it BEFORE you see a lawyer for the first time. You need to know what you are getting into and what to expect. I am helping a friend divorce her abusive husband, and she would have done a lot of things differently if she had read this book first It explains the law in Missouri, and what process you will go through before your divorce is finalized. It also gives tips on what the court typically grants in a standard no-fault divorce, so you can have a reasonable idea of how much custody/child support etc. you may pay or get. Reading this book will save you thousands of dollars in lawyer fees and costly mistakes. Well worth the investment.

Between the Dark and the Daylight explores the concerns of modern life, of the overworked mind and hurting heart. These are the paradoxical - and often frustrating - moments when our lives feel at odds with everything around us. Only by embracing the contradictions, Chittister contends, may we live well amid stress, withstand emotional storms, and satisfy our yearnings for something transcendent and real.

By delving into the chaos, this audiobook guides us through the questions that seemed easier to avoid and enlightens what has been out of focus. With simple and poignant meditations, Between the Dark and the Daylight reveals how we can better understand ourselves, one another, and God.

Between Darkness and the Daylight covers many topics and contradictions that relate to our faith walk. Those interested in failure and success will want to note chapters nine and ten. This book reminds me of something I learned from one of my mentors that has stuck with me. Young people often see things in black and white. That way of thinking and the pressure for academic achievement results in high rates of teenage suicide in Japan. Closer to home we have that same problem in our communities. An important part of transitioning to adulthood is learning to recognize the grey areas. If someone does not get accepted into an Ivy League school their lives are not necessarily doomed for failure. Adolescents who don't learn to recognize the gray areas end up narrow minded and resistant to change. Sometimes they cannot recognize God's larger purpose for their lives. For more on that go to page 63. Joan is culturally intelligent and knows a lot about the frailty of the human condition. This book provides insights and more importantly a coping strategy. Some of what I have learned I will share with a child from Nicaragua I am sponsoring.Dave Baker, School Accounts, Diversity Initiatives, Baker Book House

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. A Great Read By Mellissa Thatcher I actually really enjoyed reading this book. Every night I would curl up in bed and read a couple chapters. Joan had a good way of writing that made it easy to understand and enjoy even though it wasn’t a fiction book, which is usually what I read. Sometimes the chapter was actually perfect to read after what went on during the day. Her writing did get a tad repetitive and I feel her analogies sometimes made it harder to understand, such as the chapter “The Place of Tsunamis in the Ocean of Life.” I feel that that chapter just did not really get to a point and I think Joan just expected you to understand where she was going with it, and I don’t think I did. Joan Chittister did leave a lot to interpretation for you and did not just spell some things out for you. However, there were a lot of times while I was reading that I just thought “Yes!” and wanted to shove the book at someone else so they would get the point too. I actually wanted to write down so many quotes, which made it hard because then I was writing more than I was reading. I hate to mark books, or else I would have just underlined the sentences. But again, then I’d be underlining every other sentence. Joan Chittister did have a lot of great points in the book. Like I said, I was writing down so many quotes. This is a book that I would recommend to many people, because it’s easy to read and has a lot of good things that people really should read. It’s not a deep book, and each chapter is only a couple pages. So really it’s up to you how much this book speaks to you. “Frustration lies in what we decide we have a right to demand out of life rather than in concern of what life demands of us.”

23 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Gets to the heart and soul of the matter...and quickly By Belle As always, Chittister's words are both an ringing alarm and a hope-filled balm to the soul. Outstanding. One to read and read and read once more.

I did not know that. But, more importantly, it offers solid advice and practical advice on how to recover financially from a divorce. Solid read.

BEST RESOURCE for easy-to-understand truth on the mystery of baptism By Huskernew Baptism Pictures of Grace is a book for everyone - yes, everyone! I highly recommend this book in either the electronic version, or softbound. It's an easy read that won't put you to sleep with theological jargon. Eric Sahlberg has captured the mystery of baptism in thoughtful easy-to-understand conversation-style language. When reading, I was enlightened by truth yet felt like I was having a conversation with a trusted friend. This book is not denominationally biased, rather lets the Bible speak for itself. This book is designed:1. for those contemplating baptism for themselves or for their family (at any age, children to senior)2. for new parents and/or godparents3. for pastors or leaders who would like a great lay-resource for teaching their flock4. for missionaries wanting clear easy to understand language5. For individual or group study

It's an easy-to-read introduction that I highly recommend for everyday men and women who want to understand the significance of what God does through baptism. As a pastor I appreciate the need for 500 page theology books on baptism--but also believe that we need 50 page books like this that you can easily read in an evening. His conversational approach will help you gain a good understanding of Biblical examples of baptism, historical references in the early church and the powerful way lives are changed by God's grace. I encourage you to read it personally or with a small group--and keep some on hand to give away when people you know ask questions about baptism. I've ordered a bunch of copies and am thankful to have it as a resource to share.

A Must Have By Shari Stinnette Eric cleverly employs anachronisms and imagery as he leads the reader to take snapshots of grace filled moments in scripture. His little book takes a light hearted approach on a very serious subject--membership in God's family through baptism. Eternal life or death is on the line. Thank you, Eric, for the journey through scripture, making sure not to get the reader stuck in the mud of doctrinal theses. Anyone, pastor or lay member, could pick this book up, open it and lead a wonderful Bible study. Everyone, Christian or not, would benefit from Sahlberg's pictures of grace.Eric StinnetteM. Div. Dear Lord,I need Your help and sooner would be better than later. Wouldn't you know it, just as soon as I decide to attempt the 5-Day Bible Study Challenge, my parents start heaping on loads of pressure to get me into Julliard. My friend Amy isn't any better, urging me to ask Luke Ryan to homecoming. As if the cute, transfer jock would actually go out with me. I mean, we're kinda friends, and I've enjoyed our Geometry study sessions, but in case Amy hasn't noticed, I'm the invisible one at Aubrey Christian Academy, and I like it that way. On top of that, I have a feeling Luke's concealing something behind those chocolate-brown eyes of his. I know I can be self-centered and a bit melodramatic, but I really do want to seek Your will for my life. Then maybe I'll even figure out which direction points up.Sincerely,    Andrea JamisonHigh School JuniorChange-o-phobic & complete neurotic EXCERPT:"Well, looky there." Amy lifted her glasses and peered down the hall before returning her specs back to her nose. "Is it me or does Luke look like a mild- mannered reporter type?"I glared at her.
It was as though she'd read my mind.
"It's you," I snapped back. Seven thirty-eight in the morning was way too early for all my synapses to be able to process this information. I was being rude and didn't even know why."He's like your Romeo in cargo pants.""He's not wearing cargo pants. And don't compare him to Romeo. That story is way too depressing.""OK, then he's Mr. Darcy come to sweep you away from your mundane existence.""Amy, seriously, it's time to lay off the romantic fiction. Besides, didn't you tell me that crushes were for immature adolescents?""Crushes maybe, but Luke might just be the one for you. You know, the One." She did the quotes in the air thing to emphasize her statement."Are you missing your macaroons or something? I'm only sixteen." I must have been missing mine because I hadn't used that expression since sixth grade. I covered my face with my hands."Whatever, Andi. Here he comes. If you ask me, he's trying to woo you. Don't do anything I wouldn't do." She tapped my shoulder before she traipsed away.I barely took notice of her absence because I had mere seconds before Luke Ryan arrived. He didn't even give Stephanie a glimpse as he passed by her down the hall. His gaze remained focused on me. I swiveled my stance to face my locker and pulled out the daisies, forming a half-dozen bouquet in my hand. How did he know daises were my favorite? Had I mentioned it?
 More importantly, was Amy right?
Could Luke really be trying to woo me like some totally romantic gesture straight out of medieval, courtly love? I must have accidentally inhaled window cleaner or something because that just wasn't possible. His note had only been meant as a thank you. Yes, that was it. He'd even said just that.Sneaking a peek out of the corner of my eye, I could see he was almost upon me. My evil, impossible heart did a somersault in my chest. Oh, my gosh! Did I remember to put on deodorant this morning, because I was really starting to sweat. As if suffering from some horrifying form of hysteria, I stuffed my books into my locker as fast as I could. I had to get out of this hallway before he caught up to me."Hi."Too late.

Fast-paced and Entertaining By Elise Abram When Andrea promises to complete a 5-day bible study and journal, she isn’t sure if she will be successful or how it will affect her life. But as the week wears on, she faces a number of seemingly insurmountable challenges, most of them concerning school and her crush on new guy Luke Ryan, not to mention Luke’s crush on her. Then there’s the piano recital and the potential to be scouted for Julliard. To make matters worse, mean girl Stephanie is also interested in Luke. Will Andrea survive the week, let alone see her 5-day challenge through to the end?Cindy K. Green’s Andrea and the 5-Day Challenge is a quick and entertaining read, one which I finished over the course of 4 days. The story is fast-paced and the characters are believable. Poor Andrea is stuck feeling like such a hopeless failure as she tries to please everyone around her: her parents, whose only dream is to see her be a successful pianist, her friends who want her to let loose and have fun with Luke, she neglects to please herself. Rather than embrace a chaste relationship with Luke, she spurns him several times, but by the end of her 5-day challenge, she learns how to communicate and negotiate and that, if she’s simply honest with the people in her life, there is a way to make everyone, including herself, happy.Though I’ll admit I was a bit wary of the religious aspect of this text, Green manages to work in the importance of prayer and God in one’s life without hitting the reader over the head with it. The Bible passages are short and relevant to what’s happening in Andrea’s life. In addition, Andrea uses the passages she chooses on each day of the challenge to find solace in her life and to become a better person, which is kind of cool. Young girls will be able to identify with Andrea’s search for her identity, her soul, and for a way to have it all.Note: I was gifted a free eCopy in exchange for an honest review.

As Andrea tells her story from a teen girl's perspective- everyone in the world is more smart, pretty, funny, . A new boy comes to the school and actually finds Andrea all those things she could not see in herself. Her friends keep assuring her that Luke really is interested in her. Realistic scenarios play out with skirting the rules and interaction with her parents who are against her dating until she is 18, and want her to focus on getting into Julliard. As soon as she starts her 5 day Bible challenge, it seems like everything is working against her. I would have liked to see more integration of the 5 day challenge as it was part of the title, but other than that, this was an enjoyable book. I was given a copy of this book for my honest review.

It dove me back into some of my high school memories and "crushes." It is a "fairy tale" romance complete with the too-good-to-be-true Prince Charming that she falls in love with. The ending was a little too predictable, but a happy one. Maybe it has been too long since I have been a teenager, but her emotions seemed to be ridiculously all over the place - which is probably all too normal! One disappointment - the book builds up to this BIG piano recital throughout the whole story. But then when it actually comes to it, it gets skipped over with a, "I did it! It's over." There could have been a lot done with that section of the story. All in all, I think teenagers will love it!As reviewed on www.thestubbypencilslibrary.com

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. (2) The prayers are the unique and very useful contributions here By D. Philip Veitch Almovodar, Nancy. Prayers of Comfort: Daily Petitions from the Heidelberg Catechism. CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform; First Edition edition. March 5, 2015. http://www.amazon.com/Prayers-Comfort-Petitions-Heidelberg-Catechism/dp/1508751250/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1432060037&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=nancy+almovodar+prayers+of+comfortI will proceed along five lines. (1) The dedication page, (2) A few preliminary observations. (3) Certain notable titles. (4) Certain notable phrases. (5) Wrap-up and recommendations.First, Nancy Almovodar dedicates this volume to Roberto, her husband, God, her mother, her FB friends at “Old Paths for Today’s Women and her Pastor, Jonathan Van Hoogen. Of note, the Pastor offers this salutary challenge: “…better in the arena” fighting imperfectly than “yelling in the bleachers” but doing nothing. A vintage and memorable challenge from the Pastor as well as Nancy herself, especially in this day of declension of doctrine, worship and piety.Secondly, some preliminary observations. (1) The volume is 91 pages of text—the Heidelberg Catechism with full questions and answers, select Biblical texts, followed by a prayer. (2) The prayers are the unique and very useful contributions here. (3) The volume does not have a table of contents, index, bibliography or exposition of the Catechism itself. The prayers themselves are expository. The idea is devotion based directly and closely on the catechetical content. It works. It has the profound inter-mutuality of the tri-axis of doctrine, worship and piety. (4) This volume is written by someone who has worked her way out of the anti-intellectual morass of charismania, the loud hoopla, the gassy Word of Faith sorceries, and other neo-Montanist features of our time—she worked through all that and into her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. work in systematic theology. As a reviewer, it has been marvelous to watch Nancy’s change and development since those earlier years. In addition to the doctorate, most commendably, she is working on her MA in church history. I can only hope this leads to a second doctorate—an exemplar and benchmark for all. This is most heartily endorsed and appreciated by this reviewer. So, we are not dealing with an uneducated enthusiast and pumpkin-patch rhubarb, but one who has followed the Biblical mandate to learn, read, mark, learn, inwardly digest, meditate, conserve, advance, defend, speak and hand-on…the varied and many injunctions of His Majesty to speak slowly, but deeply and wisely. (5) I will say more on the usefulness of this handy 91-page volume towards the end, e.g. private home devotions, family devotions, catechetical classes in the parish, classical Christian schools, graduate schools (seminary) and I’d add to the Book of Common Prayer. But more on that dimension later. For now, a long list in points three and four. The third and fourth points will read more like a list—long, but suggestive. We cannot enter into the details. We recommend a quick read on points three and four, long enough to gather the flavor of the orthodox, Confessional, Protestant and Reformed flavor—yeah, of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church. It’s here in the prayers. So, thirdly, a sense of things. Some are from the titles and a few are our own musings on the titles. They are included to give reader the lead ideas.• 1-Comfort (our vintage Q/A 1-2)• 2-Necessary Things• 3-Misery• 4-Justice• 5-Man’s Deliverance• 6-Christ our Substitute• 7-Particular Redemption (notable here for the (1) inclusion of the Apostles’ Creed, most needfully and helpfully given the national amnesia and neglect and (2) the important term, “particular redemption” for the definitive, sure, effectual and abidingly valid redemption in accordance with election)• 8-“Our Most Holy Faith”• 9-God our Father• 10-Providence of God• 11-God the Son• 12-Jesus Christ• 13-Only Begotten Son (delightfully with the Nicene Creed that classical Anglicans, Lutherans, Romanists and the Greeks use, but so infrequently used otherwise in worship…so was good to see here)• 14-Virgin Birth (delightful to see the “Nativity of our Lord” from the 1789 Book of Common Prayer, known only to old school Anglicans)• 15-Suffering Servant• 16-Humbled to Death• 17-Raised with Christ• 18-Ascended to Heaven• 19-Ascended to Heaven• 20-Of God the Holy Ghost• 21-The Holy Catholic Church (a notable phrase, a phrase that includes the Gospel but excludes that false gospel of that deceiving gasser in Rome)• 22-Raised with Christ• 23-Why Such Faith?• 24-Good Works• 25-Means of Grace: the Sacraments (notably two, not seven)• 26-Holy Baptism• 27-Washing Away of Sin• 28-Lord’s Supper• 29-Bread and Wine• 30-Means of Grace (a notable question on the “popish mass”)• 31-Key of the Kingdom• 32-Thankfulness• 33-True Conversion• 34-Law of God (the catechumen must—yes—must memorize the Ten Commandments here, a long lost project in the nation’s churches)• 35-Rejection of Images• 36-Right Worship• 37-Keep His Name Holy• 38-Keep the Sabbath• 39-Honor Those in Authority• 40-there was no title here, but the 6th commandment was under review• 41-Keeping Ourselves Pure Unto Marriage• 42-Thou shalt not steal• 43-Speak the truth• 44-Being content in all things• 45-Necessity of prayer (and yes, the child must memorize the Lord’s Prayer)• 46-Our Father• 47-First petition: hallowed by Thy name• 48-Second petition: Thy kingdom come• 49-Third petition: Thy will be done• 50-Fourth petition: daily bread• 51-Fifth petition: forgiveness• 52-Sixth petition: deliver us…Amen. In this third observation, even a quick and cursory review indicates the big issues are covered including comfort, law, misery, guilty, redemption, thanksgiving, and an explanation of the Apostles’ Creed, the Ten Commandments, and the LORD’s Prayer with a robust Trinitarianism throughout. This is not just in the catechism, but the prayers. In the fourth observation, we will do much like the third observation. The third looked more at topic and leading themes and “titles.” The fourth observation picks up a few memorable “phrases.” The object is the same: give the reader a flavor. Most of these phrases are found in the prayers.Again, this 91-page volume is a collection of prayers based on the catechism (although this review might suggest otherwise).• The standard and wonderful Q/A 1 and 2 stand like a mountain top with comfort, sin, miseries, but also deliverance and gratitude• Total inability with “grant us repentance”• “…by the Words of Your most holy law, no flesh shall be justified…”• The “”greatness of the Fall” (7)• “Our inability to obey stems from our own hatred of You and Your law…” (8)• “Son of God has stood in our stead” (9)• “…Your Son, the Incarnate Word of God, Blessed Second Person of the Holy Trinity, Jesus of Nazareth…” (13)• “Particular Redemption” for Lord’s Day 7 (15). We noted this distinctive and important title earlier.• Apostles Creed (16)• “O God, most high, most glorious, the thought of your infinite serenity cheers me, for I am toiling and moiling, troubled and distressed, but You are forever at perfect peace” (21)• “…let me live near to the great Shepherd, hear His voice, knows its tones and follow its calls…” (21)• Christ—“ordained,” “anointed,” “Chief Prophet and Teacher,” “our only High Priest,” “eternal King,” “governs and preserves us,” “eternal and natural Son of God” while we are “children adopted of God” (23, 25)• Entire Nicene Creed is cited (25-26)• “The Nativity of our Lord” from the 1789 Book of Common Prayer (27)• “…very God and very man…with respect to His human nature, He is no more on earth, but with respect to His Godhead, majesty, grace and Spirit, He is at no time absent from us…” (33). An important Reformed position that is not—repeat, not—Romanist, Lutheran or Anglo-Tractarian. This also was Thomas Cranmer’s view and one for which he was murdered.• Our “advocate…in heaven as a sure pledge…” (34)• “HOLY CATHOLIC CHURCH” (38). Caps in the text.• “…grants and imputes to me” (41) Christ’s “righteousness,” satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness (42)• “…with Martin Luther we pray, `Lord Jesus, You are our righteousness and we are Your sin…” (43)• “Thrice Holy One” (44)• “…but by grace alone, you have given us true faith which looks to Christ alone for righteousness, obedience, and satisfaction…” (44)• “Means of Grace: The Sacraments” (45).• “…the Holy Ghost works faith in our hearts by the preaching of the Gospel and confirms it by the use of the sacraments…” (45)• “signs and seals” (45)• “food and drink” (46)• We are “admonished and assured by holy baptism” (47)• “…the washing is not our promise to You, nor a public statement of our desire to follow You, but it is a sign and seal You have given to the Church and to all who believe and their household” (48). This section entirely upends the Baptacostalist definitions.• We are “admonished and assured” in the Lord’s Supper (50)• “…certain signs of the body and blood of Christ” (51)• “Christ is in heaven” (51). Again, there is no room for Rome, Lutherans or Tractobates here.• Surprisingly and delightfully, a Prayer of John Knox (52-53, 54-55)• Delightfully, in Q.80, the “Lord’s Supper and the Popish mass” with its outstanding answer (59)• “…that no doctrine of the devil will be established” (59)• “...against vain things, strange fire, heretical teaching” (59)• “…wicked and ungrateful lives….unchaste person, idolater, adulterer, thief, covetous man, drunkard, slanderer, robber or such like shall inhabit the kingdom of God (61)• We get a quote from the Book of Common Prayer (61). It appears to be from the American 1928 BCP for Morning Prayer rather than the English 1662 BCP.• Question 92—requires the catechumen and young scholar to memorize the Ten Commandments (63).• Questions 94 to 115 deal with the exposition of the Commandments (60-80)• The Lord’s Prayer, Questions 116-129 (80-91)Your eyes might have glazed over for points three and four. However, even a cursory glance gives the flavor and sense for the classical loci of theology. It should be remembered that these 91 pages cover 52 Lord’s Day. Hence, just under 2 pages covers 1 Lord’s Day with the Q/A and the prayers themselves. Again, this is a volume of prayers. So, how might this volume be useful?• Private and personal devotions of about under 2 pages per day• This is clearly very useful for children. I’d recommend unison prayers out loud with the children.• Although this reviewer is committed to Morning and Evening Prayer with the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, this could be handily inserted right after the Apostle’s Creed. This scribe uses the Westminster Shorter Catechism as an insert to the BCP. However, these HC Q/A’s and prayers could be used there as well. It is most unlikely there will ever be a revision of the BCP. Currently, on the American, English, Scottish and Irish fronts, the Anglicans thus far are not teachable on this point--Reformed Catechisms. They've essentially tossed their 39 Articles. That’s just a fact. It shows too. Nevertheless, for the more advanced and Reformed Anglicans, this could make sense. For the others, put the expectation at zero. Again, while this reviewer uses the WSC with the BCP, this little volume would work as well.• This volume would be very useful for catechism classes and Christian schools. In fact, if running a catechism class, I’d have the students read the prayer in unison either before or after the session. Although, regrettably, there has been a large stream of Reformed people who have been anti-written-prayers. Not everywhere or always, but often. It makes little sense (e.g. hymnbooks, Confessions, etc.), but it has existed. Not everywhere, but in places. If it weren’t so serious, it would be humorous. (E.g. We have a complex Confession, 700 hymns in the hymn book, and big libraries but no written prayers, please.)• I think a Professor of Systematic Theology or even Church Historian could use these each semester with graduate students. That is, for a 3-hour class per week, each class could begin by reading the Q/As (responsively) with the seminarians praying in unison. 3 times per week = 48 times over 16 weeks. 6 times over 3 years. This was never done at Westminster Seminary. The suspicion and expectation would be—I’d surmise—that this would be “Sunday Schoolish” when, in fact, many of their men have never been catechetized from youth. It would take about 1-2 minutes and would connect the deeply inter-mutual tri-axis of doctrine-worship-piety. Furthermore, it would begin to show prospective Pastors the value of catechesis. But, then, liturgical worship did not shape the chapel experience at Westminster in my day—it was basically 1 hymn, 1 prayer and another theological lecture. For an old school Anglican, the worship at WTS was impoverished and was just another class room lecture. This little volume could be used for systematics classes. But, they probably think they are too smart for these “little catechisms” in a graduate course with a “little written prayer,” truth be told.Thank you Nancy for this. May God help the lads and lasses. As Luther said somewhere, “A Doctor of Theology is not a theologian unless he can sit on the ground with the children and teach them the catechism.” Would that Professors of Systematics and Church History would literally sit with the children like Luther and teach good theology with good prayers. Barring an outbreak of that, let the parents use this volume to learn, read, and pray with children. This volume is in that vein.

Simply the Best By Joan Hallford I always look forward to new Taste of Home cookbooks because I know I can depend on them to have delicious, easy to prepare recipes with easy to find ingredients by home cooks like myself. And this cookbook is no exception. I’ve already picked out Cinnamon Breakfast Bites, Turtle Chips, Simple Sesame Chicken with Couscous, and Zesty Crouton Salad to prepare soon. But, I am adding to this list every day. The title says it all – Simple, Easy, Fast.

Definitive By Phillip Taylor MBE COURT OF PROTECTION PRACTITIONERS: NOTE THE RADICALLY AND EXTENSIVELY UPDATED EDITION OF THIS DEFINITIVE WORK FOR 2015 – WITH FREE SUPPLEMENT AND ACCOMPANYING CD ROM.An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green ChambersWith an aging population, and instances of dementia increasing, together with other illnesses that impair cognitive ability, public awareness of the existence of the Court of Protection has certainly increased in recent years. Its remit and its functions are extensive and manifold as evidenced by this latest edition of ‘Court of Protection Practice 2015’ recently launched by Jordan’s.As President of the Court of Protection, Sir James Munby notes in the Foreword, this in an essential volume for those who work in, or appear before the Court and indeed ‘essential for every judge and practitioner in the Court of Protection.’If any aspect of your professional work places you in the above categories, you’ll need to refer to the wealth of new material contained in this book which comes with a free supplement -- and of course the accompanying CD ROM -- provided by Jordan’s.It is the supplement, however which contains the most up to date material. Just after the main volume went to press, the amendments to the Court of Protection Rules 2007 were put in place and have been incorporated in their entirety in the supplement. As the publishers have explained, the Court of Protection (Amendment) Rules 2015 (SI 2015/548) amended the Court of Protection Rules 2007 with effect from 6 April 2015 for certain rules and 1 July 2015 for the remainder, subject to transitional provisions. The amendments and the dates of commencement are clearly indicated.Because of its currency and importance, the supplement should receive special attention, certainly with respect to the revocations and the overriding objective, which stresses that the court must be enabled to deal with a case justly, ensuring for example, that it is dealt with expeditiously and fairly and that the parties are on an equal footing.Within this surprisingly compact volume of some 3,000 pages, there is much else that is new for 2015, too diverse to mention in detail here. But suffice to say, all the narrative chapters in Part I and the procedural guides in Part II have been comprehensively updated, with all the relevant updated legislation included in Parts III to V.Among the important updates are the latest Deprivation of Liberty (DOL) forms contained in Part VII. These will appear online as fillable PDF’s which can be saved and reprinted and which will also allow changes and correction of errors. New precedent orders, including those pertaining to DOL matters, are to be found in Part VIII. Part IX contains the latest case law summarized under topic headings which is excellent for the advocate, and in Part X you’ll find the full range of updated international questionnaires. The book also provides extensive research resources and directories, including tables of statutes, statutory instruments, cases, practice directions and codes of practice, plus a table of EC and international regulations.Without a doubt this is the complete and definitive work of reference on the Court of Protection. And in a bit of an understatement, one must say that this book is a monumental achievement and certainly a credit to the general editor, District Judge Gordon R Ashton and his team of eight expert contributors. Thank you.

Soup To Die For By JulieW THE MYSTERY WRITERS OF AMERICA COOKBOOK REVIEW[...]The Mystery Writers of America Cookbook appeared in my mailbox the other day, and I had no idea why it had been sent to me. Fortunately, the mystery was solved with the included letter: I’d won it on a LibraryThing.com giveaway. But were the recipes any good? I began my investigation.(And just because I won this book, I’m under no obligation to give it a good review. Heavens knows not all cookbooks are created equal.)First I looked at the 175-page hardcover book. It’s published by Quirk Books who claims the cookbook features “hard-boiled breakfasts, thrilling entrees, and cozy desserts…” While I know Lee Child, Mary Higgins Clark, Harlan Coben, Sue Grafton, Scott Turow, James Patterson, and others can write like nobody’s business, can they cook? Or write a recipe to satisfy my curiosity? I perused and selected a handful of recipes to explore.Grand-Mere Marie’s Root Vegetable Vichyssoise by Wendy Hornsby takes some patience what with cleaning the leeks and chopping celery, carrots, and other root veggies like turnips, parsnips, winter squash, and rutabagas. But with a base of thick-cut bacon, a splash of white wine, and a dash of butter, this soup is a winner. Perfect for a late spring when there are brave crocus blooming amidst a spattering of light wanna-be snow. No, more than that. It’s to die for.I couldn’t help myself. It really IS that good.Likewise the Latvian Solstice Squares while perhaps not totally authentic to Latvia culture, deserve a place in your dessert back pocket. With preparation similar to Eagle Brand’s illustrious Magic Cookie Bars. This version uses a mixture of German chocolate cake mix and butter as a base, then throws in semisweet chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, butterscotch chips, and almond brickle chips. Heck, my German chocolate cake mix included a pouch of dry ingredients to create that luscious coconut frosting – I threw that in with the base mixture and was delighted with the results. Oooeee gooey goodness. The Mystery Crackers by Sandra Brown are as easy as can be, and certainly tasty. Definitely something you’d want to make if you hate to cook and have some time to spare. Or, as Brown writes in the introduction, “I can make Mystery Crackers while I’m writing. And I keep them in the fridge of my office for snacking. If I’m in a lull, I can nibble a few to ‘spice things up!” While I didn’t go for the suggested cayenne pepper, I did try them with a smoked paprika – yum!I was also intrigued by the Farfalle with Fennel and Pine Nuts on page 62; this recipe is by author Leslie Budewitz. Unfortunately, my local super-duper mart did not have fennel. I improvised with shredded brussels sprouts and walnuts for me. And with the guidelines in the recipe it still turned out really good. Who knew brussels sprouts worked so well with raisins and cinnamon? And finally, I implore you to make Sue Grafton’s recipe for Kinsey Millhone’s Famous Peanut Butter & Pickle Sandwich on page 87. While Grafton urges readers to avoid improvisations, sometimes a tight situation requires quick thinking. I did what I had to do:Creamy PB, the toasted lower half of an “Everything” bagel, and a five perfect bread & butter pickle chips completed my snack. And I’d do it again.Case closed. Perfect for Mystery Book Lovers By Jill Before I can even start my review of the actual book itself, I'd like to mention how beautiful this hardcover is. It's a textured cover with a cute pattern of skulls, knives, and forks on the side and a golden ribbon placeholder. It looks very old school murder mystery novel, which is a perfect homage considering what book this is!The Mystery Writers of America Cookbook is a collection of recipes from dozens of just that- mystery authors. I'm familiar with more than a few of these authors (Charlaine Harris, Joelle Charbonneau, and Gillian Flynn to name a sample), and the ones I haven't heard of have still made an impact on the mystery genre. There's even a special bonus recipe from the one and only Richard Castle of the show "Castle" which I thought was a great touch. The recipes are divided by course for easy navigation, and each course chapter has its own index so it's easy to find your favorite author or your favorite recipe, whichever it may be that you're looking for. There's also really cool facts and tips sprinkled throughout the book. But what's really awesome about these recipes is that they each have a back story. So many of them are pulled from the author's book- a character who made this dinner for another character or a character who owned a bakery, things like that. I love seeing fiction brought to real life like this, especially since more than once I have looked up recipes after reading a book (like The Hunger Games and Beautiful Disaster for example). If the recipe isn't from a book, there's still a nice personal story about why the author included it. It feels like I'm in a book club or something, like I'm really casually friends with these amazing writers who are giving me new dishes to try. It's a cool, cozy vibe to the whole book.I also really like that at the end of the book, there's charts for weight/measurement conversions. That's a really overlooked thing in cookbooks, in my opinion. I wish there had been more pictures, but that being said there's a fair amount of photographs in here to help you along the way. Some of the dishes that I'm most looking forward to making are Male Chauvinist Pigs in the Blanket (Nelson DeMille), Grandma Maria's Pasta Puttanesca (Lorenzo Carcaterra), and Latvian Solstice Squares (William Burton McCormick). There's also a cocktails section, for the perfect night in.Plus, proceeds go to the MWA, which is pretty cool too.I think this book is fantastic, and any book lover (especially a mystery book lover) would love to have this recipe collection. I also think it'd make a perfect gift, due to both the delicious content and the gorgeous presentation. Thanks so much to Quirk Books who provided me with a copy in exchange for my honest review.

By OutlawPoet From some of your favorite mystery writers, this book is a wonderful mix of recipes, anecdotes, and fun little facts. The authors span different types of mystery sub-genres - from David Morrell of Rambo Fame to Charlaine Harris, you're sure to find something from an author you love. Now, unfortunately, there aren't pictures of every recipe. For me, that's a bit of a fatal flaw in a cookbook, as you feast with your eyes first. However, the pictures that do grace the book are lovely, fully color, and inspiring. As for the recipes, some have direct connections to the book, some are just some of the author's favorites, and others are passed down in their families. So far, my favorite recipe that I've tried was Margaret Maron's Baked Toast. Easy to make and yummy! There are also a few that I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole - that pickle and peanut butter sandwich, for example. (Note: There's a full color picture of this one and it doesn't help. It looks horrid.) However, even these recipes are tied to the author and his/her books and are a fun, though somewhat nauseating, addition to the book.Simply put, the book is fun, inspiring, and does feature a lot of really great recipes. It's also inspired me to read some of the authors I hadn't read before!
