Melissa F. Olson was raised in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and studied film and literature at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. By Rawrr Fresh from a trip to LA (which was apparently full of revelations--all of which I have to assume happened separetly in this novella: Malediction: An Old World Story), Lex notices there's something off about the magic in Boulder but she barely has time to wonder why before she's being called in to perform her duties as Maven's "female henchman." As soon as she gets home from trying to solve Maven's problems, she's drawn into the investigation of a man eating reptile. Throw in a couple more convoluted plot lines, and she's suddenly trying to prevent a potential war between the races, all while obsessing about how to best protect her beloved niece and trying to get an a-hole cop off her back.I actually enjoyed this book a little more than the first one but at the same time, there were all these references to stuff that apparently happened outside of book #1 in this series and none of the explanations for why the races would be at war made much sense to me. I'm not sure if it's because I just don't have the full picture due to the fact that I haven't read much of her other stuff (i think I could only stomach maybe the first 1-2 bks in her Scarlett series) or because it's just that convoluted, but either way, this book was a 3 for me bc of these things.I mean, apparently, the witches have never known their own origins or the origins of their own magic? I am to believe the local coven eagerly agreed (or the majority of them) to give up all their offensive capabilities even though they are already so much lower on the food chain compared to the other supes? And if Maven is so freaking powerful why would she even need the witches to give it up? Really, if their magic was that threatening to her then why didn't they just say "no thank you, we're not interested in crippling ourselves" and send her on her way? So many plot holes.I'm also still confused as to why all the witches act like "boundary magic" is so horrible? Aside from Lex having an "affinity" for death, the author hasn't really shown her magic to be any different from any of the other magic (which is to say that all magic has the potential to be good or bad, and i would think that a bunch of wiccans would get this). I also didn't understand any of the motivations for the conflict going on with the vampires, though I have to say, I liked way they dismembered each other over it. The things that I really like about this series are Quinn and surprisingly, Maven. Quinn doesn't fit the typical alpha/vampire stereotype you always run into in a UF like this (and this author's stuff always reads like very stereotypical/cliche UF to me, which is why I've never been very into her stuff). Neither does Maven, though I have to say, her decisions at the end of the story made no sense... I also thought Lex's personality came together a little better in this book, but there are still weird moments where Lex inexplicably turns into a suburban mom-type mother hen (a lot of UF authors tend to do this and personally, I can't stand it). Ultimately, I found this story entertaining enough that I will probably check out the next one but that's not really saying much (i read a lot).

Brilliant By Arnold This fabulous author, who made it into my favourites list with her very first book and has continued to wow me with everything she writes, has done it again. Melissa writes beautifully and her books just seem to get better and better. This is well thought out, extremely clever and has characters that you cannot but help fall for.Lex is a witch, not just any witch but a boundary witch, a pariah of the supernatural community, one in which even those with questionable talents and characteristics consider Lex a danger. Lex's powers are fascinating and we learn more about them in Boundary Lines. The mystery involved this time round had me constantly guessing and changing my mind and I had to find out along with Lex. The twists and turns had me unable to put the book down and this was another very late night!The world is set in the same one as Scarlett, our favourite null, but don't let that fool you, the community is not the same at all and we see the supernaturals in a very different light, with the whole setting of Boulder almost a character in it's own right. Lex has a wonderful family but we see her beginning to pull away from the normal world a little and learn more about her new one. A few characters in particular I was very happy to see more of and I am greatly anticipating where the next book will take Lex, her family, especially Charlie, and her new friends. One thing that stood out to me was how my perception of things can be changed by the author. In Scarlett's series I am not a fan of the wolves, here I might well be seeing them in a different light, without giving away anything!All in all a fast paced completely engrossing book that has me hooked even more of a fan than I was before.

Thank goodness it was excellent because that would suck if i had to write something negative. Melissa Olsen proves what a great writer she is and with each book she writes, her skills increase.I was first introduced to Melissa Olsen after reading her Scarlett Bernard series , which is an amazing new adult paranormal series about a null. Because of this, sometimes i have a hard time warming up to new characters in a different series, or the same series for that matter. This was the case with boundary witch Allison, or Lex as she is called now. the first book she seemed too unrealistic at times and a little over board. However i knew i could trust Melissa Olsen to deliver a great second book regardless , and she did.Lex finds out in book one that she is a boundary witch, a witch that deals with the dead. and that her niece is a null(read Scarlett Bernard series to find out more). other witches in the clan are really upset to find out there is a boundary witch in their town and worse, one who wasn’t brought up knowing what she was. so out of control powers and lack of understanding about the realm make Lex kind of a nuisance.Book 2 is focuses on Lex finding more about her powers and how to tap into them. the story is about the magic being off in colorado and how its disrupting the town and Old world, vampires, witches, and werewolves. lex has to figure out with the help of her friends (yay! character from old world novella appears) whats going on and how to stop it and put everything back in order.i love mystery stories and i love paranormal stories and i love that she Finally added more romance to the story! the last one was seriously lacking in my opinion.this book is not a faced paced story. you read it to really read and get inside the world. thats what i love about her writing. some authors write stories you read in a couple hours mostly because you're skimming it and the worthless content. Melissa’s writing skills are that of an experienced writer, and so everything she writes has a purpose.i really warmed up to Lex’s character in this second book and really like that this is an adult novel, no high school stuff. I am looking forward to find out what is going to become of her niece and her story.
