It is helping me to use natural sweeteners in ways I had never even considered. What I love is that while there are some recipes that feel "healthy" (as you might expect!), there are equally as many recipes - if not more - that are decadent and fun. But no matter the type of recipe, I know I can feel good about eating it and serving it to my family.

I actually had no idea about some of the sugars she talks about and uses in these recipes. I am excited to try new things instead of the regular brown and white sugars in my baked goods!

I got to know her on her blog, and in the past years feel like I've forged a full blown love affair with her books Marshmallow Madness and Pure Vanilla. Real Sweet is no exception. Don't go into this thinking the use of natural sugars means this is health food... it isn't, which makes me love it more. Real Sweet DOES use natural sugars, but in inventive and delicious "real dessert" ways. Not only have a gained a better understanding of alternative ways to sweeten desserts, but I can't wait to start experimenting on my own! I've already made 2 recipes from the book with great success using turbinado sugar, and I have some Muscavado sugar on it's way. I can't wait to start baking with it! The idea of using less processed more natural sweeteners is intriguing, especially if it adds more flavor. A must for any baker!

An ambulance screams through the Jerusalem’s quiet streets. Inside, a toddler fights for his life, his parents nowhere to be found. With profound shock, an emergency room doctor realizes that the child’s mother―a young American―is already at the hospital, sitting at the bedside of yet another child with traumatic injuries. Devoutly reciting Pslams, she stubbornly refuses to answer any questions, cautioning her children to say nothing.

Brought in to investigate, Jerusalem detective Bina Tzedek-herself a young mother- carefully peels back layer after layer of secrets and lies, following a dark, winding path through Jerusalem’s Old City, kabbalists, mystical ancient texts, and terrifying cult rituals, until she comes face to face with the horrifying truth which has held a young American family captive.

From internationally bestselling author Naomi Ragen, THE DEVIL IN JERUSALEM is a chilling tale of the paths that so easily lead us astray, and the darkness within us all.

It begins with two young children admitted to the hospital ER, one unconscious, both obviously the victims of severe abuse. Their mother, Daniella, refuses to admit this possibility and plays dumb when questioned by the two detectives assigned to investigate this case. Detective Bina, herself a mother, is disgusted and horrified, a reaction the reader almost certainly will share, as more details emerge, and it appears that Daniella and her husband, after moving to Jerusalem, have gotten involved with a charismatic and amoral (is there any other kind?) cult leader who has primary control over disciplining their children ranging in age from a toddler to teenagers. Both Daniella and her husband are separated from their families, struggling financially and personally, and thus are easy marks for being seduced by this man. Much space is also given to the backstory, beginning when Daniella herself is in college but must give up her dreams of being a doctor to have her first child. Crucial to punishing the leader and his flunkies is testimony from the children themselves, but will they be able to detach themselves from their harsh treatment and tell the truth? The subject matter is undeniably grim, though that is not the main reason for my rating. It is likely that the reader, upon reaching the part where graphic abuse is described, may share the reaction of one detective and feel nauseous. The descriptions are brutal to read, as just about form of abuse is perpetrated on these innocent victims without anyone intervening for a long time. If the author set out to shock, disgust and horrify the reader thoroughly, she has more than achieved her goal. The writing quality itself, however, is uneven. There is much showing instead of telling, as well as some purple prose. I was surprised to learn that this wasn't the author's first or second book, as those kinds of mistakes are more common (and forgivable) then. Overall, it does take an unflinching look at a difficult subject, but flaws in the execution keep it from being as powerful as it could be.

A story that needs to be told By Israel Drazin This is a very well-written, gripping, and suspenseful novel that is based on true horrendous events among Jews, Christians, Muslims, Atheists, and indeed all people. Although depressing, the story needs to be told to protect vulnerable and insecure people from falling into the grip of cult leaders who lead innocent victims into believing that the cult leader is a “messiah,” a “god-like” figure, a man or woman who knows the ultimate truth, who is in conversation with angels and God, who is defending his gullible flock from demons, and aiding them to climb to loftier heights, to become what he or she claims God desires them to become. Some of these cult leaders milk their followers of their wealth or part of it, leaving them to live in harsh conditions that is “better for them,” which “helps clean them,” while the cult leaders live in huge mansions in luxury, even flying in multi-million dollar planes. Many of these leaders are sick psychopaths who derive unnatural pleasure from being able to control and manipulate people. Some, as the “messiah” in this tale enjoy hurting their followers and getting others to hurt people as they watch, or, as an American cult figure did, he poisoned hundreds of his flock. While this book does not address it, there are many, too many, “ultra-religious” leaders, who although not reaching the level of a cult leader, also take advantage of insecure, often insufficiently educated people leading them to think that what they are teaching is true religion, while what they are saying is untrue. They attract many followers, even well-educated men and women, and cash in on them by taking donations and ego-bursts. They demand the observance of practices that reasonable religious leaders consider absurd and demeaning, even demonic, behaviors that cut off their congregants from friends and neighbors.Naomi Ragen’s tale of a Jewish cult leader in Jerusalem is based on some true events that occurred in Israel, but while Jewish it is an unfortunate universal tale. Irony is too weak a word to describe the striking similarities of the Jerusalem cult leader to what occurred in ancient times in Jerusalem’s Valley of Hinnom, called Gehinnom in Hebrew, which came to be the word for “hell,” where pagan priest were able to convince their followers to deliver their children to burn them as sacrifices to their god.Ragen’s tale is the story of a loving couple, an educated woman and her loving husband who is not as educated as his wife, who is a well-meaning luftmensch, a man with his head in the clouds, who does not like to work. They are Americans from good families who moved to and settled in Israel because of their love of Judaism. He thinks that he should spend as much time as possible studying Talmud for he was told that this is what God wants. However, he soon becomes attracted to the study of Kabbalah, Jewish mysticism, which he really does not understand, and falls under the influence of the “messiah,” a charismatic, bearded, highly disturbed rabbi with a restricted group of followers who teaches practical Kabbalah. Although the husband spends time “studying,” he finds time to produce children. Soon, with half a dozen kids, and with little or no help from her husband, tired, feeling lost, and confused, she also falls under the “messiah’s” control. What follows is bizarre, cruel, and unbelievable. She is led to do things no rational person would do. Brainwashed and convinced that what she is watching is good for her and her children, she looks on as her children are tortured, beaten, burned, forced to eat vomit and feces. She allows the “messiah” to do tormenting things to her and to her husband, and to cause her to afflict her husband, and he her.

Bukowsky "The Devil in Jerusalem" is a cautionary tale about the ways in which persuasive frauds prey on susceptible victims. Naomi Ragen based this book on true cases of self-proclaimed religious leaders and their acolytes who committed horrific acts of child abuse. The novel opens in Jerusalem with an ambulance rushing to Hadassah Hospital. The paramedics are trying to save the life of an unconscious boy who has suffered terrible head trauma. Meanwhile, the toddler's mother, Daniella, sits at the bedside of her older son, who was admitted to the hospital with third-degree burns. Daniella sways back and forth, praying from the Book of Psalms. What happened? She refuses to talk to the authorities.Ragen flashes back to the marriage of nineteen-year-old Daniella Whartman to Shlomie Goodman, a Talmudic scholar with no marketable skills. The two move to Israel, where they start a family without delay. Daniella is a doting mother who lavishes love and attention on her beautiful children, while Shlomie seeks a mentor who will teach him how to get closer to the Almighty. Tragically, Shlomie naively allows himself to be manipulated by a psychopathic and charismatic individual with evil intentions.Unfortunately, Ragen's prose style is awkward and heavy-handed (Shlomie had "an overflowing sweetness that was as clean and pure and wholesome as a glass of milk. It came out of his eyes, blue, happy pools, like waters in the Bahamas."); her dialogue does not ring true; and, in her eagerness to deliver a powerful message, she neglects the basics of effective storytelling. Instead of creating three-dimensional characters, Ragen settles for caricatures. Daniella, who starts out smart and independent, becomes so inexplicably passive that we no longer recognize or empathize with her; Shlomie, although basically kind and well-meaning, is a "luftmensch," or "impractical contemplative person having no definite business or income." The villains are all brutal and malicious. The sole voices of reason are Daniella's brother, who lives in America, and two Israeli detectives, Morris Klein and Bina Tzedek, who try every method at their disposal to break down Daniella's resistance. This is a dismal and dispiriting work of fiction. If Naomi Ragen's name were not on the cover, and if "The Devil in Jerusalem" were not based on actual events, one wonders why anyone would want to read it.

From the author of National Book Award finalist American Salvage comes a dazzling and suspenseful new story collection.

Named by the Guardian as one of our top ten writers of rural noir, Bonnie Jo Campbell is a keen observer of life and trouble in rural America, and her working-class protagonists can be at once vulnerable, wise, cruel, and funny. The strong but flawed women of Mothers, Tell Your Daughters must negotiate a sexually charged atmosphere as they love, honor, and betray one another against the backdrop of all the men in their world. Such richly fraught mother-daughter relationships can be lifelines, anchors, or they can sink a woman like a stone.

In "My Dog Roscoe," a new bride becomes obsessed with the notion that her dead ex-boyfriend has returned to her in the form of a mongrel. In "Blood Work, 1999," a phlebotomist's desire to give away everything to the needy awakens her own sensuality. In "Home to Die," an abused woman takes revenge on her bedridden husband. In these fearless and darkly funny tales about women and those they love, Campbell’s spirited American voice is at its most powerful.

Review “Like the women in her stories, Campbell’s prose can be watchful and viscerally alive.” (New York Times Book Review)“Bonnie Jo Campbell is a master of rural America’s postindustrial landscape…. Shine each story does, just like two laughing showgirls who, Campbell writes, ‘without wigs and makeup, dressed in their jogging shorts and tanks…seemed like carefree teenage boys.’” (Boston Globe)“The book thrums with powerful young women.” (Chicago Tribune)“It's a hard-luck, hardscrabble life in the world of Bonnie Jo Campbell's stories, a landscape that's as fertile as it is unforgiving, where families crop up and wither with the weather but manage some piquant humor and moments of worthy reckoning along the way.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)“With grit and reverence, this story collection is gorgeous in its honesty.” (Marie Claire)“Mothers, Tell Your Daughters is filled with shifts…when a turn of fate, a moment in nature, brings surprises and revealing insights. And within the turmoil and the troubles, the demands and the limits of life, Campbell reminds us, there are possibilities for moments of grace.” (NPR Online)“What it comes down to, in Campbell’s world and in ours, is that to be female is to fight all kinds of trouble with all kinds of strength.” (Oprah Magazine)“Campbell grounds us in such graphic grit, making these lives so bitterly, relentlessly real, we want to reach through the pages and pull them to safety―aware, alas, that many would firmly refuse rescue.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

About the Author Bonnie Jo Campbell teaches in the low-residency MFA program at Pacific University. The author of Once Upon a River and American Salvage, she lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Bonnie Campbell's book, Mothers, Tell Your Daughters is my most recent experience with short stories, and just reinforces the fact that I should read them more often.Campbell's stories center around women- women who often have been dealt a tough hand in life. From drinking, abusive men, unwanted pregnancy, and struggling to get by, these women have all had their share of challenges. Campbell does a great job representing the lives of financially challenged women in rural America.Because I'm not someone with a great deal of experience in short story reading, I'm never sure if a book like this is meant to be devoured in one sitting, or read and savored more slowly, one story at a time.Typically I read books quickly, and this was no exception. The one problem in this case was that many of Campbell's stories were similar, and felt a little repetitive. This didn't cause me lose interest and the stories continued to be enjoyable, but I am wondering if I would have liked them even more if I read one each night before bed instead of devouring the entire collection in one afternoon.Mothers, Tell Your Daughters is a great story collection that won't disappoint readers and reaffirms my experience with this genre.

Stories of women, young and old; happy and not so happy - each equally real and alive By Eugenia If it was up to me this collection of short stories should be a required read for every high school student. While girls would benefit from the stories the most, it would be a good education for boys too on what happens to young girls and women, how vulnerable they are and what it means to have a casual sex that can lead to a lifetime of poverty and misery. For any mothers too shy to talk to their daughters about coming of age, addressing issues such as rape, teenage sex, abuse (verbal or physical) these are the stories that bring it all to life. All of these stories are set in Michigan, with exception of one that is taking place during vacation in Romania and protagonists are all Chicago residents. Most people in the stories are middle class people some even belonging to the class of poor and neglected. Each and every story is strong and power and I was drawn to every story from the very first story I read. I was shocked when I realized that the first story was less than 2 pages long and yet it shook me to the core of my being. I re-read it three times and simply could not shake it off my mind. The favorite story of all in this collection is "Daughters of the Animal Kingdom". But it is "Somewhere Warm" that touched my heart. It is simply a story of so many human beings, who at their core are good, kind and caring. As author says, those people (like Sherry who is the main character of the story) are like the sun. To quote : "Loving was as natural for a good person as shinning was for the sun, and the sun shone whether the plants appreciated it or not. Some people, like Josh, could return your love, and other could only absorb it, the way black hole took in all the light and agave nothing back, but that didn't diminish the shinning."Author Bonnie Jo Campbell created a fine collection of stories that definitely deserver attention and praise and hopefully there will be reading audience out there to truly appreciate it. Ms. Campbell teaches in the low-residency MFA program at Pacific University and lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She published four more books prior to this one and it is a fine storyteller. I loved this book for start to finish.

Whether it features a battered wife finally getting what revenge she can, a daughter repeating the mistakes of her mother, or a mother watching her own mother's end of days even as she makes choices that she never thought she'd make, each story comes alive with unexpected vitality, displaying a consistent virtuosity that never falls short.

He is a pastor at Shadow Mountain Community Church and founder of Turning Point Radio and Television Ministries. Although he is a familiar on-air voice, he did not narrate his book, Answers to Your Questions about Heaven. The book was narrated by Bob Souer. This is a book of firsts for me - the first book by David Jeremiah and the first book I've heard read by Bob Souer. The narration was well done. The format is questions and answers. The questions read with good pauses before the answers were presented. Souer's voice was an easy listen. Every once in a while, it felt like a computer narration, but not for long sections. Souer has a very straightforward approach to reading an audiobook. I would listen to him again. The content of Answers to Your Questions about Heaven was okay. Jeremiah talks about heaven, angels, demons, and the millennium. The most thoughtful section of the book was when he answered questions about angels. To briefly sum up, our impressions of angels are vastly different from how they are described in the Bible. I would agree. For the most part, the millennium section stood out because it was a very different take on the end times and heaven. I know people have questions about heaven and I appreciate Jeremiah sharing Bible verses with the readers.I was intrigued by the questions shared in the Answers to Your Questions about Heaven, but I would not need to read it again. This book made me go back to the Hebrews 11:1 - "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." Faith builds hope and trust and removes worry. So I don't need to worry about heaven. God has kept his promises for ages past, I know he will keep his promise of heaven to me.I received this audiobook for free from christianaudio for this review.

" The Table of Contents provides easy access to these questions and many more By Roberta Rhodes Book Review - Answers to Your Questions about Heaven - David Jeremiah (Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. THREE WOMEN AND A BABY DADDY...

“A trio of eccentric women and the city of New Orleans come vividly alive in this diverting debut!...Quirky, irreverent and irresistible.” —Publishers Weekly You just know a book titled green eyes delivers all the good stuff--seduction, envy, Southern charm with all the accompanying treachery (Scarlett O’Hara had them); and shopping. You heard right—we did say shopping— in Darby Cooper’s case, for the perfect human studhorse, a man who can pass along the gene that gets you into grad school along with the prettiest emerald orbs in Louisiana. Who wouldn’t want that for her kid? If you're a fan of Too Jewish, you’ll remember Darby as the smart, sad kid from the royally messed-up Cooper family, the only daughter of a Holocaust escaper. Now that it's the 70’s, she’s grown up to be a hoot— still shy and depressed, still baffled and reclusive, in truth still pretty much a trainwreck, but for all that, a woman who knows her way around a sardonic turn of phrase and who dares to become a single mom before it's cool. The good news? Meet Darby’s precious baby daughter, precocious, green-eyed Honor. And the bad? Oy vey! That’s in the book too. It’s the perfect read for any woman who’s ever felt ignored, rebellious, under-appreciated, and a little bit green-eyed—hmmm, shall we just say any contemporary woman? Who in particular will like it: Those who enjoyed the movie “Trainwreck” and perhaps identify a bit too much; fans of Lena Dunham and other screwed-up outsider heroines; everyone who loves New Orleans! And women (men too) partial to dark humor, Jewish fiction, family dramas, and slyly humorous literary fiction. Because the humor here is subtle, the characters sharply drawn, the prose razor-honed; the laughs chuckles rather than guffaws. So...not a fun chick lit romp. Those craving “a quick, easy read” or other mental vacation should probably look elsewhere. (We’re not being condescending—just trying to help you make a good decision. For fun chick lit romps, we recommend choosing from our very own booksBnimble website!) One more tip: Green Eyes was originally published by Viking Press as The Exact Image of Mother; and it was also briefly called Too Jewish: The Next Generation. If you've read either of those, great news--you can move right on to Book Three in the trilogy. Do Not Open For 50 Years, The final volume of the Cooper Family Saga, is now available. AUTHOR’S NOTE: Green Eyes, was first published in 1991, almost a quarter of a century before its prequel, Too Jewish. I wanted to tell more of the Cooper family’s story, which meant it got sandwiched between a prequel and a sequel. So it's a bit different-- I was quite a bit less experienced. But it’s the first novel I ever wrote, so please be kind! –-Patty Friedmann PUBLISHER'S NOTE: I was a fan when it first came out and I still am. Take a chance on it! -- Julie Smith, booksBnimble

I had trouble with the multiple choice answers to amazon.com's questions asking me to describe this book because I need to use more than one adjective per question! The plot has "some twists," is "full of surprises," but is also fascinating (which wasn't one of the options, but I added it. The "mood" of the book? I need "dark," "funny," and "nostalgic." Patty Friedmann's book are always all of those and more. And I mean nostalgic in the sense that all of us can identify with her characters from people we have known and/or the person we were or are now or will be. As for "dark" and "funny," dark humor is one of Friedmann's strengths and her appeal."Pace"? It's the kind of book you can read at your own pace. It keeps your attention, but you want to read more as you go along; but you need to read it a little more slowly because you want to roll the words and the descriptions around on your tongue before continuing. As for the "characters"? Let's just call them "people": "developed," "complex," and like us in so many ways.

This story is about three generations of women introduces us to Darby, who feels like an outsider in her own city, and, in fact, to her own narcissistic mother. Her need for love and acceptance moves between her grandmother, who has begun to lose her grip on reality, to her increasing desire to have her own child (husband not a necessity. ) The author portrays these eccentric characters brilliantly, and she captures the "real" New Orleans in all of her novels--not the romanticized version one sees in so many stories. I've read all of Patty Friedmann's novels, some of them twice. You should too.

Unique Characters Abound By Ray Wright Patty Friedmann’s latest, TOO JEWISH: THE NEXT GENERATION, is another great read with her dysfunctional unique characters making all the wrong choices in colorful New Orleans. As usual, I had to look up a few words – this time it was solipsistic and kitsch. I actually knew that Catahoula eyes were the warm look of a breed of dog common only in Louisiana. Katrina chased me out of that area, but I still try to keep up with Patty Friedmann’s latest publications.

SHE LOST SO MUCH AT A YOUNG AGE BUT SHE FOUND SO MUCH IN HER NEW LIFE By Dorothy Hendrickson Hope, her parents and her seventeen year old brother had a terrible accident during the time of rainstorms and a swollen river. The bridge fell and their carriage with it. She was the only survivor. She answered an ad for a bride in Texas to be the wife of Josh Atkins. She got off the coach and was rushed into the stage depot by the driver and there stood a handsome young man and the preacher. She had to get married immediately because he was into cattle drive. She wanted to sleep in a bed for the first time in months but she is now going to sleep on the ground outdoors for another month or more. This is a beautiful story.

Hope, the main character, is afraid of the water with good reason...she almost drowned. When her new husband takes her on a cattle drive she is not much interested in helping. She has to deal with horses, cattle and her own feelings about her new husband. Eventually she decides how she will help him with his job instead of fighting against him. This is a great pioneer romance set in the old west. I am really enjoying the stories I've recently come across by Katie Wyatt because they are actual romances that deal with love and commitment. I'd let my granddaughter read it.

By Ruby Slippers My word, what drama, tragedy, sadness, fear, uncertainty she went through it all.Even though Hope was thrown into a rushed marriage, a cattle drive, stampede, and nearly drowned for the second time, she never gave up.No matter what we suffer, if we struggle and rely on God things will always work out. We must endure, we must fight to survive, and sometimes we even have to fight to love and be loved.Wonderful story Katie!Starr

Two Steps Forward: A Story of Persevering in Hope (Sensible Shoes), by Sharon Garlough Brown

Review "As in the Bible itself, there are plenty of flawed people here. Sometimes, Brown lovingly shows, God doesn't clean up the messes of life. Sometimes he calms the storm, but sometimes he just calms his child." (Billie Rae Bates, Foreword Reviews, Winter 2016)"Once again, Sharon Brown has provided an inspirational story that allows readers to shadow four women as they continue their spiritual journey. Each facing specific challenges, the friends learn that God is with us, even now, even here, in the midst of our own mess. With a powerful companion guide for prayer and conversation, this book is ideal for anyone dealing with loss, abuse, fear, anxiety or insecurities. It reminds us all with a gentle touch that we are born in the image of God and we are worthy of being loved." (Julie Cantrell, New York Times bestselling author of Into the Free and The Feathered Bone)"Two Steps Forward is a wonderful continuation of Sensible Shoes as they share life with their spiritual director and each other. I became totally engaged in the thoughts, actions and process of the gals struggling in their own formation. Sharon shows that the narrow road does lead to life, or to put it differently, God does his deepest work in the darkest night. Read, weep and celebrate with the four women of Kingsbury who want to be more like Christ." (Rachael Crabb, coauthor of Listen In)"I couldn't wait to dive again into the lives of the four friends I got to know in Sensible Shoes. I was not disappointed as I laughed, cried and thanked God for the sisters in my own life walking the journey with me." (Anita Lustrea, executive producer/host, Midday Connection, author, speaker, spiritual director)"Have you ever wondered what it would be like to meet with a spiritual director to talk about your spiritual journey? Sharon Brown does a masterful job of giving the reader a glimpse of what that process is like through the stories of four different women looking for peace and hope. For me, these women have become sacred companions on my own journey. I learned and pondered things with them like: What are you afraid of? Where do you want control? What agitates you? Learn to linger with what provokes you. What is God stirring in your soul? It is as though you enter into spiritual direction yourself, and it's life transforming! My own heart has been enlarged for more of Jesus as a result of Two Steps Forward!" (Marilyn Hontz, author of Listening for God)"With her characteristic wisdom and grace, Sharon Garlough Brown gives voice to hope in the stories of Hannah, Charissa, Mara and Meg. Their spiritual journeys during Advent are marked by darkness, waiting and even heartbreak. Yet in Brown's honest and tender narrative, their friendship with each other and their openness to God's work in their lives continues to draw them toward light and new life, bearing witness to light in the darkness. To read this book is to learn to hope. In the lives of these four women, Brown reveals a God who calls us beloved even through our tears, who faithfully keeps his promises and who sends a Savior to bring joy to the world. Two Steps Forward offers spiritual insights of the rarest beauty about both the pain and the peace at the 'growing edges' in our life with God. Like Sensible Shoes, this book is a gift and blessing to all who long for Emmanuel." (Rebecca Konyndyk DeYoung, Calvin College, author of Glittering Vices)"When I received the advance reader's copy, I gobbled it up, reading it far too fast while not wanting the experience to end. I loved reading about Mara's trip to London―her description of a Tube ride is spot on―and the other women's support of each other through their various struggles. The way the author conveys the transforming nature of their spiritual growth is brilliant and compelling." (Amy Boucher Pye, Woman Alive, February 2016)

Great to catch up with these ladies By Paula Vince The first book in this series, Sensible Shoes, was one of my favourite books of 2014, and this picks up where that one left off. The four main characters are so different from each other, once again I was amazed by how easy it was to relate to each one of them. I especially like the tension between how they think they should behave and whether it's the response their heart tells them is right. These are definitely Christian novels, with God's subtle workings in the hearts of individuals at their own heart.Christians are often counselled to put others' preferences ahead of their own, and Meg is a natural at that, but how is it meant to play out when you're chafing inside? When you know the other person will resent you for speaking up, but you can't sweep aside your point of view this time, especially when it's a person you care deeply for?Christians are told that we should be Jesus' hands and feet, which would seem especially the case for a pastor like Hannah, but when is a line crossed into self-appointing yourself as God's rep or deputy? I like her revelation, 'My words declared Jesus was Lord but my life declared I was.' And also her paradigm shift that she'd been putting all of her confidence into her ability to hear from God, instead of his ability to speak to her in a way she'd recognise and understand. What a big potential stress relief for many of us.It's great to see Mara, the under-appreciated mother with her history of rejection, learn to keep soaking in the truth that no matter whether or not her outer experiences reflect it, she is beloved! We are all beloved. What a simple, but revolutionary truth to remember each morning. How great is her relationship with her son, Jeremy! For a little while, I was concerned that she was showing favouritism, but no, her interactions with Kevin in this story show that's not the case. Then there's Charissa. What hope is there for a control freak who even wants to control how she's going to give up control? She asks that question herself. Her's is a wake-up call for those times when we want to separate our sense of self from our achievements and reputations. Her story helps us step back to question our motives when we ask, 'Why am I working so hard on this project anyway?'I like the chance to probe the deeper questions these ladies' stories raise. They may even be different for each of us. For me, one of them was 'to what extent should we accept our knee-jerk reactions as part of our natural make-up, and to what extent should we desire to temper and change them?' It would seem the experiences of the four main characters bear out my own; it's a bit of both. Even though mentally beating ourselves up for our perceived shortcomings does no good whatsoever, if an ingrained reaction is holding us back, it's possible, with God's help, to work on overlaying it with new attitudes. While some of the particular episodes in this story are neatly wrapped up, it's easy to see that the wider issues are still unfolding, making me hope for a third book.

Where the first book "Sensible Shoes" taught Spiritual practices, "Two Steps Forward" showed the characters wrestling with holding onto them in their messy lives. I'm glad that Brown doesn't sugar coat Christianity to make it seem as though all is ironed out and clean. Instead, she pointed at the weaknesses of her characters and demonstrated how God filled their void with His power and love and provision.Highly recommended for book clubs, study groups, people looking to dig deeper into their Spiritual lives. Readers would do best to read Sensible Shoes first, though.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An Enjoyable Continuing Journey By Amazon Customer This sequel to Sensible Shoes is both engaging and delightful. Set during the Advent season, the characters' story continues almost immediately following the conclusion of the first book, and, now, we find them attempting to live out the spiritual lessons they were taught in the last book. In the midst of very plausible life challenges and struggles, the characters each weave into their lives spiritual practices they previously learned, as they try to navigate new ways with God in the middle of messy circumstances. Brown does an excellent job showing just how knowing and practicing spiritual disciplines doesn't miraculously change your life, but rather, they are tools to assist you down the winding path with Jesus. Yes, the Holy Spirit does bring change, but not always in the ways or in the timing that we prefer. Book clubs, small groups and individuals who simply want to go deeper, would do well to note the "Companion Guide for Prayer and Conversation" in the back of the book. This 8 week guide is rich with reflection questions, spiritual practices, and discussion questions, all drawn directly out of the narrative, giving readers a chance to go two steps forward in their own spiritual lives.
