By Sandy Warner I have all of Gesine Bullock-Prado's other cookbooks, and "Let Them Eat Cake" is like visiting an old friend who moved into a new house. Each chapter is filled with familiar favorites but also new iterations - but that's not all. Each recipe also includes adjustments to make each recipe either vegan, gluten free, or simply healthier. We're talking cookies, pies, cakes, ice cream, candy, muffins, scones, biscuits, and quick breads. Baking classic, vegan, gluten free, or healthy using real ingredients that the end result tastes good. I don't have dietary restrictions, but know plenty who do. And being a home baker, having this book at my fingertips when I need to accommodate for someone's diet will be a saving grace.Update 3/20/15: I have made the following recipes:- Chocolate Chip cookies (healthy version) - the recipe is very straight forward and easy to swap out from the original though I did have to constantly flip the page between the two variations to make the adjustments. A very, very minor hassle but the final end results are fabulous!!- Whoopie Pies (original version) - I LOVE whoopie pies and this recipe is a classic!! Deep rich chocolate cake with a cream cheese filling. These were sooooo good!!- The Big Winooski (original version) - If you love chocolate than this a cookie to try! It's dense, and rich, but not in an overly sweet way. A big winner!- Rugelach (original version) - These are excellent!! I halved the recipe because I only had one brick of cream cheese and it still an made ample number of cookies (2 doz). I also swapped out the red currant filling for raspberry and swapped the pistachios for almonds. This is an easy recipe to make and make adjustments to. The final result was delicious!- Linzer Heart Cookies (original version) - another delicious cookie!! I had a little trouble transferring the cut cookie shapes to the sheet pan because the dough was getting soft and sticking to my counter top. If I rolled it out on parchment and chilled it periodically this would solve the issue. I blame my impatience, not the recipe for this. The end result was still tasted wonderful, even if a few cookies didn't look perfect.I'm really enjoying this cookbook. The more I am learning about the benefits of healthier ingredients -- and having great results with the healthy version of the chocolate chip cookie recipe -- I want to try making the above recipes in healthy variations.

I am reviewing this beautiful book as a long-time, gluten free vegan By Evelyn Getchell I preface my evaluation of this cookbook by letting other home bakers know that I am reviewing it as a vegan of more than three decades. And as a vegan with a diagnosis of celiac disease and multiple food allergies for ten of those thirty plus years I've been a gluten free vegan. I also have many, many years of pastry experience in professional kitchens under my belt.First I must praise Gesine Bullock-Prado for this high quality and truly gorgeous publication. As I do with all my new cookbooks I read LET THEM EAT CAKE compulsively from cover to cover as soon as I had it in hand. I stayed up late that night just to hungrily finish it. I spent many long moments devouring every picture. This book is in every way a thoroughly satisfying reading experience and Gesine shares her expertise and anecdotes in a most charming fashion. But it is the pastry photographs by Tina Rupp that made me swoon. This is some of the best food photography I have seen in a long time. And the concept of offering in a traditional baking book gluten free, vegan and healthy variations is nothing short of brilliant.But to be honest I have found the vegan and gluten-free variations of the traditional recipes to be somewhat disappointing. The recipe adaptions I've tried are good but nothing exceptional. With the exception of only a few recipes which have the traditional recipe along with the method and the vegan, gluten free and healthy variations on the same or facing page ( and these are mostly cookie recipes) - I do not find the format of this cookbook practical or user friendly for someone like me who would be referring exclusively to the variations of the traditional recipes. I am obsessively particular about the condition of my precious books and I always keep my cookbooks in a stand with a plexiglass cover while baking to keep them clean. However you can imagine the hassle of my having to flip to the next page for so many of the gluten free and vegan options and to keep turning back and forth to refer to the procedures. The truth - it irritates me to distraction.However I do admit that some of the recipes are well worth the trouble, like the Fudgy Wudgy Brownies, the Figgy Pistachio Upside Down Cake and the Fudgy Chocolate Bundt Cake.What I really liked best about this book is the cookie section. All the cookie recipes are gluten free vegan winners. I also adore the Butter Crunch Pecan Toffee recipe in the Ice Cream and Candy chapter.As far as the pies, cakes and ice cream go though, I have other, much better gluten free vegan references, such as Allyson Kramer's Sweet Eats for All: 250 Decadent Gluten-Free, Vegan Recipes--from Candy to Cookies, Puff Pastries to Petits Fours, Cybelle Pascal's The Allergen-Free Baker's Handbook, Elizabeth Gordon's Allergy-free Desserts: Gluten-free, Dairy-free, Egg-free, Soy-free, and Nut-free Delights, Cara Reed's Decadent Gluten-Free Vegan Baking: Delicious, Gluten-, Egg- and Dairy-Free Treats and Sweets and Hannah Kaminsky's Vegan a la Mode: More Than 100 Frozen Treats for Every Day of the Year.Having said all that I would still give this fine book a five star rating for the traditional recipes and the stunning photography. But for the gluten free and vegan options I must assess with three and a half stars only. I do applaud and shout "Brava!" to Gesine for presenting 80 of her best recipes with such healthy variations. But for now my final rating is four stars. As I prepare more of the gluten free vegan variations in this book, I may circle back and reevaluate accordingly. I wouldn't be surprised if I end up changing my rating to five stars.

I took a class with Gesine Bulock-Prado at the King Arthur Cooking School last year and enjoyed it so much, I wanted to get the book. Her recipes are easy to understand, have great tips, and her writing style is very personable. I am vegetarian, tending toward vegan, and I have friends who are gluten free, diabetic and dieting. I've made the GF chocolate chip cookies, which are amazing. Most friends ask for the recipe, but mine just ask me to make more! I'll be buying the cookbook again as a gift for a friend who loves to bake but has 2 grandchildren with food allergies.

By Amanda Explicit Leadership challenged my way of thinking about my role in leadership. The book opens with a Explicit Leader Creed that includes statements such as " I refuse to live passively. I Refuse to point the finger at someone else. I Refuse to use my words to tear down, undermine or destroy." The author challenges the reader to take a look at their role in leading a team. He encourages the leader to look at what drives them/ what there passion is what there vision is. Once the leader has examined the type of leader they want to be the author gives us things to consider in leading a team. He talks about establishing trust in your employees and believing in what they are doing. He mentions ways to build them up as people first then employees.He gives us practical ways to celebrate and encourage our employees to show them they are valuable. I loved how the book related relevant Biblical principles into how we should treat employees. The author challenges the reader with thought producing questions at the end of each chapter which challenge us to examine where we are heading as a leader and then gives us practical steps to get there. I found Explicit Leadership to be a book that I keep referring back to help me be the leader that others want to work alongside.

It showed me quite a few things that I need and want to work on; letting people around me know they are loved and appreciated, serving others, celebrating others, using my words to build people up and not tear people down, believing who God says I am (His redeemed beloved adopted son) and living accordingly. Gonna try to apply these principles one chapter a week so I can get the full benefit.Here are some things that hit me in reading."Where do you lead from? ... Leadership starts with love; receiving the love the Father lavished upon us in Jesus so our cup overflows. ... As we respond to Jesus with faith, we are a new creation, adopted into the family of God. We are forgiven. We are secure. We are free. We are affirmed. We are celebrated by our eternal Father""Be better at home. Be better at home than you are at work. ... Our children need the passion, encouragement, and celebration that explicit leadership can bring"

The leadership principles are applicable to anyone, whether in leadership positions or not. Focusing on leadership principles as they relate to God's word and His gifting for each of us is an excellent partnership. Plus, with shorter, manageable chapters, you can really dig deeply into each one. I've read a few chapters twice just to get all of the great content to sink in. I'd highly recommend this book for anyone in a leadership position.....which really means, I'd recommend this for ANYONE. We all lead somewhere...work, family, etc. Give it a shot, apply the principles, and enjoy the journey.

About the Author

From 1965 to 1970 Michael Aaron September was a legal services attorney representing people living in poverty for the federal Office of Economic Opportunity.

In 1970 he entered private practice and for over thirty-eight more years he engaged in many aspects of law, from criminal defense to personal injury. During the last thirty years of his practice he specialized in divorce and family law.

He represented people in hundreds of civil and divorce cases and established a reputation as an effective, aggressive, and formidable courtroom advocate for his clients. He has now retired and lives with his wife in New Mexico.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. The seed for this book was planted by an indirect compliment from my husband, Hugh, about my cooking. Knowing I was an enthusiastic home cook, someone had asked him what my “specialty” was. He and I both know I don’t necessarily have a favorite cuisine. Through trial, error, and money wasted, I’m mediocre at cooking meat. I am too unconventional for perfect baking and err on the side of health nut for classical dishes. What I do well is what I care most about, which is produce.  I have an affinity for seasonal vegetables and whole foods with bold dressings or sauces. I crave healthful, colorful foods that taste good. My specialty, per se, is food in a bowl—combinations of vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, big salads—texture and flavor that go together to make a simple, nutritious meal that makes sense composed in one vessel. “Bowl foods” was Hugh’s answer to the question. First I took offense, then I laughed about it, and after telling the story, I came to realize that this is the way a lot of whole foods–focused eaters cook: a dish colorful enough to serve when friends are over for dinner, the kind of meal you can bring to the couch with nothing but a spoon or fork, or where leftovers can be packed up easily for the following day. One could argue that food in a bowl has an aesthetic gentleness to it that feels stark on a plate—ingredients nestled within each other, tangled to make most sense as a sum of their parts. I am using the bowl as a point of inspiration for the recipes shared here.  I grew up in a home where eating together—but not necessarily cooking—was emphasized. We laugh about it now, especially given the style of food I lean toward, but most things were frozen, canned, or mixed from a packet. One of my mom’s standbys was frozen taquitos sticking out of a bowl of microwaved Ranch Beans (they came in a can, sweet and barbeque-ish), or my dad made us blue box mac n cheese with hot dogs in it . . . and I am not referring to the organic, grass-fed kind. My childhood is reflected upon fondly—I have great parents who made life fun and gave my sister and me every opportunity to succeed, but my career now is an ironic juxtaposition to the eating habits we had growing up.  I went to college in San Luis Obispo and, out of curiousity, started working at the organic farm on campus. I was paid in vegetables, and in my best effort to live on a budget, I taught myself how to cook given what I was sent home with. I watched shows, scoured magazines and cookbooks, and learned by trial and error. It was then that I fell in love with knowing where my food came from and how it was treated and tended to. I witnessed the full farm-to-table circle, firsthand, and cooking and eating became a lot more personal. Working on that farm, be it a small chapter of my life, is largely responsible for how passionate I am about seasonal produce today. I learned the stark difference between a fresh summer tomato and the kind you get from a conventional market in December—simple, nutritious food made sense when you paid brief attention to what was in season and timed it right.  After school, I took an internship in Tuscany, Italy, at an olive oil farm and cooking school called Villa Lucia. There, as seen in most of Italy, I learned more of the emphasis on using excellent ingredients and well-executed preparations to make uncomplicated, delicious food. I worked hard and woke up early to prepare breakfast for the guests. I watched and listened—that is how I have become a better cook, by watching and listening to what people like, how food makes them feel, what aesthetically makes them respond. To feed people is an act of service and generosity—there is more to it than just filling your belly. I dated and married my sweet husband among all this—a man who prefers cheeseburgers but loves to be fed regardless. He is a talented photographer and we started Sprouted Kitchen, a food journal, as a place to document thoughts on life, recipes, and his dynamic photos. We figured out how to work together as a team, amicably as possible, and in time, acquired opportunities for freelance work, teaching classes and workshops, and publishing two cookbooks.  Writers and entrepeneurs use the word journey loosely and often when referring to their careers, as this path proves surprising and unpredictable, but I really feel that is the best word to describe the ride Hugh and I are on with food writing and photography. It has led us to meet some incredible people and provide a lifestyle of doing work we enjoy. I aspire to always share pieces of a life being figured out alongside my delight in making food with those who share a similar enthusiasm for both. Having an online space to do so has been incredibly rewarding. We have a little boy who will be sharing a seat at our table as well. He’s mini. I don’t know if he’ll prefer cheeseburgers or salad, but I’m excited to feed him. Through feedback from journaling on Sprouted Kitchen, teaching classes, and consulting friends on dinner plans, I’ve found that the recipes people want are the ones I make as part of our everyday life. People are busy, time is limited, and while there are Sunday afternoons for a meal with a longer list of steps and more dishes to clean, the resounding request is practical—delicious, healthful, and practical. I am not classically trained nor do I have a culinary school degree on my resume. My experience and authority comes from feeding people and paying attention. My style is quite simple. It is colorful and thoughtful in its combination of textures, colors, and hints of flavor with cheese, nuts, or an herb-packed dressing—but it’s simple to prepare. The advanced cook may find it overly so, but my goal is to speak to the everyday home cooks who desire to prepare wholesome, vibrant foods at their tables. I depend on using fresh, seasonal produce at its peak for the food to taste great in its natural state. Most instruction you will find here is straightforward and the ingredients easily found at a farmers’ market, health food store, or wellstocked grocery store. There are phenomenal books that teach skills like braising, roasting, or grilling; you can even find ones on entertaining and crafting a lovely tablescape. While cooking as a hobby continues to grow in popularity, you will be able to find a cookbook on just about any facet of the process. But this book is a collection of recipes inspired by the marriage of flavor, color, texture, and wholesomeness that compose a dish—nestled in a bowl, in particular. The naysayer could argue a number of these recipes may also be served on a plate and I wouldn’t disagree. The title is bowl+spoon, yet many are better eaten with a fork. In the name of cooking and pleasure, let’s leave the literal and pragmatic aside. Much like painting or writing, the process of writing a cookbook is deciding on a thesis, and food in bowls, whether served family style or individually, is essentially the thesis of this cookbook.  We’ll start with breakfast, of course, and continue with small bowls of sides and dips, then big bowls, which stand alone as an entrée, and seal the deal with a few sweet bites. I’ve included a number of my favorite dressings and sauces as well—something to have on hand when you’re throwing a quick meal together. Whether you're looking for a crisp green salad for a dinner on the porch with friends or a hearty tortilla soup for a cold night in, there is something satisfying and healthful for everyone in here. I am often asked about altering recipes to accommodate allergies or specific diets. If you cannot eat cheese, don’t scratch a recipe for that reason. Adjust these recipes to accommodate how you cook and eat. If you can’t do nuts and they’re used as a topping or garnish, leave them off! I don’t often follow recipes to a tee, and I expect the reader to take some authority here as well. In a generation of busyness and schedules and desperate convenience, I hope to encourage people to eat at home with people they care about, to compose produce-focused meals, and to value their health, through the food choices they make. My contribution to that is accessible recipes that take more time to prepare than eating out or microwaving, but reward you with the joy there is in feeding people well. I’m honored you’re reading this book and allowing me to share a piece of my life via the foods I cook for my family. We have to eat; it is a basic need. Inviting people to your table, be it online, through a book, or in a literal sense, is where the point of need and community get blurred into something quite beautiful. Wishing you many great meals in good company.-------------------------------------------Golden Quinoa and Butternut Breakfast Bowl My favorite breakfast spot in Los Angeles is Huckleberry Bakery. They have a glistening pastry case filled with rustic baked goods and treats of all kinds and a big chalkboard that lists a very fresh, yet somehow decadent, menu. I will never forget the first breakfast I enjoyed there and how impressed I was with their savory breakfast bowl. This is how I recreate it at home, simplified from theirs, but still a beautiful bowl for chilly fall mornings. I use quinoa, but any cooked grain will work—try bulgur, spelt, millet, barley, and the like. The style of eggs on top is up to you. I love the nuttiness of Manchego, but Parmesan works too, either way be generous with the cheese. Herb oil 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives ⅓ cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 teaspoons fresh lemon zest Sea salt and pepper — 1 small butternut squash (1½ pounds), peeled, seeded, and cut into ½-inch cubes 2½ tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil or coconut oil ¼ teaspoon cinnamon  ¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg Sea salt and freshly ground pepper 2 cloves garlic, minced ¼ of a yellow onion, finely diced 3 cups coarsely chopped baby kale 2 cups cooked quinoa 1 tablespoon maple syrup Pinch of cayenne pepper, to taste Juice of ½ lemon 8 eggs 1 cup shaved Manchego cheese For the herb oil, in a food processor or high-powered blender, blitz the parsley, chives, olive oil, lemon zest, and a pinch of salt until mostly smooth. Set aside. Position rack to the upper third of the oven and preheat to 425ºF. Spread the squash cubes on a large rimmed baking sheet. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a few pinches of salt and pepper. Toss to coat and spread in a single layer. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the edges are browned and caramelized. Remove to cool slightly. In a large frying pan over medium heat, heat the remaining 1½ tablespoons of oil until shimmering. Add the garlic, onion, and a pinch of salt and sauté for 1 minute. Add the kale, quinoa, maple syrup, and cayenne and sauté until the quinoa starts to get crispy, 6 to 8 minutes. Transfer the quinoa mixture to a bowl and stir in 1 tablespoon of the herb oil, the squash, and lemon juice. Serve each bowl with a scoop of quinoa, eggs of your choice, a drizzle of herb oil, and shaved cheese.

By I Do The Speed Limit Strictly bowl food—and such an assortment that this book should appeal to everyone. Great ideas, great creativity, so many interesting recipes. So many that I want to make right now—they are all fighting for my immediate attention. And I like that! Veggies, grains, beans, fruits, some fish and chicken--all combined to compliment each other. Nothing heavy, and we're not talking stews in this cookbook, either.When first looking through the book, I was immediately drawn to the diversity of the dishes. In the Morning Bowls chapter I found eggs and fruits, greens, grains and veggies. There is savory and there is sweet, there is soft and chewy and crisp and juicy. I found mushrooms, leeks and eggs on one page, goat labneh on another page, “Cabbage, Fennel and Apple Slaw with Smoked Salmon Toasts” on another page. What that told me? Getting acquainted with this cookbook was going to be interesting, exciting and would definitely get my creative juices flowing.I think the publishers did a great job preparing the “Look Inside” feature for this book. So good, that it’s a better review than I could ever write. If the glimpse of the book from the “Look Inside” appeals to you, the rest of the book will too.There are loads of fresh, creative salads—both raw and cooked--as you would expect from this author. And her thoughts on “Building A Bowl” will inspire you to do great things.Page layout seems a bit crowded to me: It was not always easy to glance back to the page and find my place in the recipe. Typestyle and point size for ingredient lists mingled too easily with instructions. Check the “Look Inside” and you will see examples of the page layout.Instructions are well-written and easy to understand. They follow logically, too. Introductions (in paragraph form) at the top of each recipe are interesting and worth reading (not just filler). Lots of pictures: Of foods, finished dishes, family life, growing things. (Not a picture for each recipe, though.)What I’ve tried and really liked:--Baked eggs on greens with flavors of Dijon mustard, rich cream and butter, Gruyere.--The author’s green harissa is a real “keeper”.--A scramble of egg whites, zucchini, spinach and scallions, served with black beans, arugula, avocado, chive, salsa and sour cream.--Roasted butternut squash with cinnamon and nutmeg, tossed with sautéed kale, onion and garlic, quinoa, maple syrup and cayenne—plus an herb oil. Wow!--A salad of sliced sugar snap peas, edamame, cabbage, scallions and mint—with a miso dressing.--Herby Picnic Potato Salad foregoes the creamy and goes for a zingy oil and vinegar dressing with capers and red pepper flakes.--Like a carrot salad? You will enjoy this one with garbanzo beans, dates, and two onions in a cilantro, lime dressing. Plenty of other spices, pepper flakes pistachios and feta cheese, too.I found this cookbook highly appealing. And I am totally enjoying it!*I received a temporary download of this cookbook from the publishers.

I recently made the sweet potato chips for the Firefighters and Paramedics of The Los Angeles Fire Department Station 67 in Playa Vista, CA. The crew raved over them and want me to make them again and again. I found the book to be an easy way for me to get the typical Firefighter "Meat and Potato" eaters to enjoy tasty, natural, and healthy foods. Making healthy food choices, such as the recipes in Bowl + Spoon, keep firefighters healthy and in good condition to answer the call. The ingredients are easy to find and the preparation is easy when time and big flavor is an issue. Not your typical Firehouse meal, but definitely one to "put into the rotation." Thank you Sara and Hugh Forte for inspiring the firefighters at LAFD Fire Station 67 to eat great food and be overall healthier "Meat and SWEET Potato Eaters." By Tina in Florida This cookbook was the inspired from Sara Forte’s website The Sprouted Kitchen. The photography in this book is exceptional as is the photography on her blog. Her husband Hugh Forte is a very good photographer in my humble opinion. When I ordered this book I expected soups, salads and deconstructed casserole type dishes such as beans, rice and a protein. That’s what one eats from a bowl, right?I was surprised to see the number of meals that, in my opinion, would be better suited on a plate. Salmon, roasted carrots and stuffed peppers come to mind. Sure, you can put anything in a bowl and no one said it had to be traditional fare.Pros: The recipes are divided up by category. Morning Bowls, Side Bowls, Big Bowls, Sweet Bowls and Dressings. The beginning or introduction gives good tips on organizing a kitchen and suggestions on what items to stock in your pantry.Very health oriented ingredients although the use of cheese and dairy can be excessive.For my sample dish I choose the Cocoa Banana Cup. Yes, I know I ought to have gone with a dinner bowl but my sweet tooth was intrigued.The Haricot vert salad is one I want to make this week and Chickpea Deli Salad I may make this weekend.Cons: Some of the breakfast bowls or morning bowls as she calls them would take too much time for me on a workday. Also, some of the choices for breakfast do not appeal to my palate. Black beans, arugula and spinach (Popeye Protein Bowl) is indeed a great source of protein and screams “healthy ingredients” – but I couldn’t abide it for breakfast. The same goes for salmon and apple fennel slaw. Nope, not for breakfast. 5:30 a.m. is too early for those food items. Again, this is my personal preference.I have so many cookbooks in my collection causing the poor shelves to groan under the weight of them. Because I can’t justify taking up more room by adding another shelving unit, I have been very selective about the books I like to keep. The ones I use repeated obviously have a permanent home but ones such as Bowl and Spoon won’t be staying. It’s a pretty book. It has wonderful photography. There are just too few recipes that I will prepare.

"I knew she'd be trouble." -- Antonin Scalia By takingadayoff The emphasis on politics is what stands out most in Breaking In, as its subtitle suggests -- The Politics of Justice and the Rise of Sonia Sotomayor. Journalist Joan Biskupic, who has covered the Supreme Court since 1989, looks at how Sonia Sotomayor rose from childhood in the projects of the Bronx to become a justice on the Supreme Court.It's a good story, but one that's been told in Sotomayor's autobiography, as well as in numerous news reports at the time of her nomination to the Court. Biskupic runs through it quickly, not slowing down until she gets to where Sotomayor's career started taking off. It was never a straightforward trajectory, there were ups and downs, victories and setbacks.What struck me most was how political her road to the Supreme Court was, and how it was quite typical in that respect. She was noticed early on by Senators Alphonse D'Amato (R-NY) and Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) as a future prospect for high court. As her circle of acquaintances grew, thanks in large part to her initiative in reaching out to help Hispanic community groups, she became a more attractive prospect for Supreme Court, especially as both Democrats and Republicans realized the political benefits of nominating a Latino for the post.Paying back political favors, holding up congressional votes until some concession is made, the timing of elections, it all goes into the equation. The candidate has to be known to the powers that be, so shrinking violets can forget it. Luck plays a big role as well.The good news seems to be that since it's a lifetime appointment, once the politics of getting selected and approved have been accomplished, the justice is free to stop playing politics and consider cases on their legal merits. That's why you see justices who were thought to be reliably conservative or liberal defying expectations.Breaking In is a short (230 page) and punchy look at Sotomayor's path to the Supreme Court and her most notable decisions so far.

14 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Nicely complements the Justice's autobiography. By Ronald H. Clark This turned out to be a somewhat different book than I had anticipated. I had read with great benefit the author's two judicial biographies on Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Antonin Scalia, so I assumed that this book would be another judicial biography. In fact, it is something quite different, and I am glad it is. In her own words (at p. 7), the author declares, "Rather than biography,it examines the cultural and political shifts that merged with Sotomayor's life and led to her appointment." This is not to say there is not a good deal of biographical material here--but its focus is far broader. The Justice's well-received autobiography, "My Beloved World," opened to me the story of Puerto Ricans in America, both the good and the challenging. It was an important education for me. This book is concerned with the political, social, and economic factors, coupled with Sotomayor's own incredible drive and talents, that she maneuvered through to secure her Supreme Court appointment. That is, why was she right for the times when the Court vacancy arose? For those really interested in the Justice, I recommend that the two books be read in conjunction.Particularly interesting is the discussion of Puerto Rican interest groups dedicated to promoting the appointment and advancement of Hispanic candidates for the judiciary. The author recounts how years of effort had preceded Sotomayor's arrival on the scene. Judge Jose Cabranes in the opinion of many had the best chances for the Court--yet he aged out of contention because of the lack of Hispanic political muscle. Political factors were clearly at work in the denial of a D.C. Circuit seat to Miguel Estrada, which the author discusses in a highly insightful chapter.Yet Sotomayor made it and why this is so constitutes the central recurring theme of the book. Once again, the book reminds us of how bizarre sometimes the process of selecting nominees for the Court can be, especially in these days of intense partisan warfare. One need only read John Dean's book on Nixon's selection of Rehnquist (whose name he could not even remember at times) to see a further example. Here the author effectively traces the final competition between Sotomayor, Judge Diane Wood, and Elena Kagan to secure President Obama's nod for the nomination. Confidential letter writing to the White House; activating long-term contacts with White House and DOJ staffers; the use of published articles and books (I had forgotten about Jeffrey Rosen's harsh "New Republic" appraisal of Sotomayor) all played a role here. Sotomayor's offhand "wise Latina" statement and its impact is thoroughly reviewed by the author. The famous "Ricci" firefighter qualification case, where Sotomayor's Second Circuit panel was accused of devoting insufficient attention or analysis before denying the appeal, also played a role in the nomination battle. And of course, facing some confrontational GOP members of the Senate Judiciary Committee injected yet further unusual elements into the process.In short, the Justice's autobiography is her view of her challenging pathway to the Court, focusing as it should upon her own battles, talents, and successes. This book is concerned with the environment in which Sotomayor developed from a poor Bronx childhood, into degrees from Princeton and Yale Law, a stint in Robert Morganthau's district attorney's office, years in private practice, and her appointments to the Southern District of New York and the Second Circuit (some 17 years worth of judicial experience). But why her time had come had much to do with the context of what was going on external to her own efforts--the increasing political influence of Hispanics; the particular outlook of Obama; her contacts, colleagues, and other influential supporters. This book melds the personal Sotomayor together with the context of American politics to fully explain how she made the leap to the Court.The book cover a lot of ground in 260 pages. There are helpful end notes; a brief selective bibliography; some pictures and illustrations; and a helpful index. I only wish that the author had chosen to discuss a few more Court cases, but the ones she discusses are certainly important, though it is hard to say how representative they are of the Justice's oral argument techniques and ability to influence her colleagues. The book also raises the issue implicitly as to whether the Justice is too publicly active outside the Court, or just a much-needed breath of fresh air in a stodgy old institution. Quite a masterful study that adds much to our understanding of this most unique Justice who has a long career ahead of her.

A Good Brief Account of Sotomayor's Career Before and After Joining the Supreme Court By timcon1964 With Breaking In, Joan Biskupic provides a concise readable sequel to Sonia Sotomayor’s autobiographical My Beloved World (2014). Biskupic, who has a law degree as well as journalistic training, has covered the Supreme Court since 1989 for several news organizations, and has published a number of books about the high court. Among these are biographies of Antonin Scalia and Sandra Day O’Connor. And, whereas her biography of Scalia appeared 23 years after he joined the Court career, and her biography of O’Connor appeared 24 years after O’Connor joined the Court career (O’Connor retired the year after the publication of Biskupic’s book), Breaking In was released only 5 years after Sotomayor was named to the Court. Although more time must pass before anyone can write a definitive account of Sotomayor’s career, widespread interest in her personal story and her judicial opinions up to this time justify the sort of preliminary description we find in Breaking In.Biskupic’s book may be divided into three sections. The first traces Sotomayor’s life up to the time she was first considered for appointment to the federal bench. This section is largely a recapitulation of what Sotomayor wrote in her own book, but it is nonetheless worth reading because it draws on various other sources.The second section, the longest in the book, provides the back story on the selection of Sotomayor as a judge for the District Court for the Southern District of New York and as a Justice for the Supreme Court. Biskupic’s account reveals how the selection process depends on academic training, legal experience, judicial philosophy, ethnicity, networking, influential advocates, timing, and sheer luck. Biskupic devotes two chapters to concerns that arose when Sotomayor was under consideration for the Supreme Court. The first deals with Sotomayor’s comment that a “wise Latina” might reach a better decision than a white male (in fact, her comment reflected the “hope,” and not necessarily the expectation, that this would be the case). The second describes Sotomayor’s role in the Ricci case (in which white New Haven firefighters sued city officials who threw out the results of promotional tests that were deemed to be discriminatory).The third section is devoted to Sotomayor’s performance as a Supreme Court justice. Her courtroom demeanor antagonized some lawyers and some of her fellow justices. She was noted for directing sharp questions at attorneys, occasionally interrupting other justices to do so. She sometimes seemed less interested than other justices in persuasion and consensus, and was quite willing to write lone opinions. Biskupic discusses Sotomayor’s role in cases involving corporate spending in political campaigns, gun ownership, immigration, a suspect’s right to remain silent during police interrogation, affirmative action, and voting rights. After considering the implications of digital technology, Sotomayor suggested that such technology might necessitate special vigilance to protect personal privacy from government intrusion. Sotomayor has been on the Supreme Court for only a few years, but these years may prefigure her future decisions.In writing Breaking In, Biskupic could have relied exclusively on books, periodical articles, and newspaper accounts. Instead, she has delved into archival records, manuscript collections, Congressional hearings, and court decisions, and interviewed some of the major players in these events. The extent of her research is suggested by the fact that this 274-page book includes 25 pages of notes. Occasionally, there is a statement for which no source is cited, but this may be the fault of the copy-editor, rather than the author. Another concern is that the Internet sites cited in some notes may not be available some years in the future. Biskupic’s book features 8 pages of photographs, and contains a good 14-page index. This is a brief but valuable description of the inner workings of our government.

I am a huge fan of the zombie genre and I have read many zombie books. I feel this book stands out as it is not only a great read, but it is also very creative and has characters that I really loved. It has lots of great action. If you are a fan of stories like the Walking Dead, you will definitely love this book.

I read the first book, which I downloaded for free and it was awesome too. This series is about an elite military unit, sent on a mission in the middle of a zombie outbreak. The characters are really great and there is a lot of conflict, suspense and action. The zombies are believeable. Overall, this is a book that ranks high among all zombie books.

I'm an avid reader and this is one of the best books I have ever read. Loved the Christian story with no bad language. Want all my Christian friends to hear about this book. Can't wait for the next one .

It is a wonderful Christian novel with such depth & lots of twists that keep your attention. Have to admit, I loved the dog too. I did cry a bit in places in the story & laughed some too. Can't wait for the next book to come out to find out more of the story. I'd recommend this book to anyone.
