Visiting Cottonwood Creek By Colleen "By the Banks of Cottonwood Creek" explores the unique culture, customs, and landmarks of North Dakota through the eyes of Kelly Jorgenson. On a quest for peace, Kelly reflects on the tragedy in his past as well as the spiritual and emotional journey that has led him to North Dakota and his first pastorate where he experiences a warm welcome characteristic of rural communities. We watch as Kelly befriends a cat named Mildred, gets acquainted with his new parishioners, learns to adapt to a new culture, endeavors to understand three very different women, and tries to heal relationships that were wounded at his brother's tragic death. The story thoughtfully delves into ways people deal with grief and consequences of avoiding the grieving process after experiencing a great loss. The author skillfully introduces us to interesting and even quirky characters in the story without letting them get lost in the mix. Her beautiful and descriptive writing brings the people and places to life, allowing the reader's imagination to picture every detail. "A half moon hung in the sky, a willing partner with the stars in lighting the night sky.....Indeed, the sky seemed like a bowl tipped over with a million stars twinkling from horizon to horizon."I was amused with passages like, "Dunderweder. That's German for we're going to get a thunderstorm." Equally amusing were Kelly's empathy and his friend Tiny's apathy for minnows being used as bait while Kelly showed his ineptness as a fisherman. For those who have never visited North Dakota, this book will allow you a glimpse into the everyday life and places of North Dakotans, perhaps even planting a seed of desire to visit and experience it for yourself!

The prairie and the pastor By Sandi Lee Although I was born in North Dakota and have come to love it's scrubbed beauty, there were many things I learned after reading this novel. I always feel as if God has just swept the landscape leaving it clean and free of non essentials and the author puts the unique scenery into poetic words. The beauty of nature isn't the only evocative language in the book - much of the novel is sprinkled with word pictures giving the reader a vivid look into rural life. The small dying towns of the region are given their place and the complicated life of a modern farmer is revealed. Kelly's lack of knowledge about the state is a perfect vehicle for describing the old customs and the changes that have come about through the past generations. After reading the book, I am determined to visit the Peace Gardens. The story of Kelly and his journey are interesting to the reader partly because he is a young man living the Christian life (to the best of his ability) in an unfamiliar place while problems crop up around him. His thoughts and actions are refreshingly wholesome, a somewhat rare occurrence in today's youth. The good citizens of ND are portrayed as solid hardworking folks, people you can rely on. I am reminded of the Jan Karon books and can see a series about the young pastor, his wife and their neighbors. My only critique would be that the story wraps up very neatly; perhaps because the author is finished with Pastor Kelly? North Dakota is an area largely unexplored by novelists and could provide more interesting story lines as the oil boom continues and the state continues to grow in national importance.

Just I’m a prairie girl - always will be. It doesn’t matter that I have lived in an urban center for 45 years. I make regular trips back home to get my prairie fix. Now there is a new book that can transport me back to the prairie whenever I pick up Gayle Larson Schuck’s new novel, “BY THE BANKS OF COTTONWOOD CREEK”.The cover photo introduces the reader to a bucolic prairie scene complete with gnarled trees, a bridge covering a meandering creek, framed with prairie grass. Be prepared for an engaging story of joy and fulfillment along with sorrow and pain-of-loss while you follow young Kelly Jorgenson to his first parish assignment in North Dakota.Reeling from the loss of his twin brother in a tragic accident some years before, young Pastor Jorgenson leans on his relationship with God to help him understand his new flock while continuing to process the loss of his brother and the estrangement of his parents. This story flows beautifully. The reader will find poignant moments that anyone can relate to. Find me a family that hasn’t had to deal with chronic illness or the sorrow and pain of losing a loved one.The author has developed interesting characters within the story. Like most of us they are flawed, carrying their own baggage and just trying to figure out their own journey. Pastor Jorgenson brings a humble presence - a mixture of self doubt and a keen desire to help others, along with a sense of humor and regular dialogue with his higher power as he seeks guidance in his new role. If you like Pastor Tim in Jan Karon’s Mitford Series, you will enjoy this book.I especially love the North Dakota places described so lovingly – any reader from another part of the country will have a new appreciation for the beauty of the state.

He takes the mystery out of cooking, with clear directions and lots of helpful hints. Bruce Mackenzie Victoria Times Colonist Many of the recipes in a new cookbook by Eric Akis list the cooking time as none. How does he achieve this kitchen magic? He starts with store-bought cooked rotisserie chickens. Laura Robin Ottawa Citizen The breadth of flavours and types of dishes gives the book wide appeal. Gwendolyn Richards Calgary Herald Praise for Eric Akis:"Anyone who cooks and eats in Canada should have Eric's cookbooks in their kitchen. From the Author Pardon the pun, but the idea for The Great Rotisserie Chicken Cookbook has been spinning in my head for many years. When I was a chef's apprentice, just starting my cooking career in the 1980s, the first hotel I worked in had a rotisserie oven right in the dining room. When a customer would order a chicken, a chef would slide it off the spit and bring it into the kitchen for carving. While that was happening, it was very hard for me to not run over and rip off a wing before it was served to the customer. There's something about the juicy flesh, incredible skin and wonderful aroma that make's rotisserie chicken irresistible. From that moment on I've been enjoying rotisserie chicken everywhere I can get it, from your standard supermarket kind to those from more interesting locations, such as the Portuguese neighborhood shops selling it in Toronto, to farm markets in France and San Francisco, places where vendors were selling it from a specially fitted trucks. Over the years I also become fond of cooking my own rotisserie too, and in this book I offer 10 internationally inspired ways to do that. I've learned that, and as you will see in the book, with the right equipment and a bit of time, it's not that difficult, but taste wise, it is very rewarding. I've always seen rotisserie chicken as the starting point to a fine meal. Add a few tasty side dishes and you'll have a great dinner. That's why in this book you'll find a section filled with awesome side dish recipes to serve with rotisserie chicken, including great salads, hot vegetable and grain dishes and breads, such as moist and marvelous cheddar and green onion wedge biscuits. After eating so many rotisserie chickens over the years I've also discovered that it is actually a great ingredient to carve, or slice, shred and dice, and use in another recipe. That's why in this book I've dedicated six chapters of recipes that do just, from quick midweek meals ideas, such as pulled chicken sliders and mac and cheese with chicken and peas, to special occasion dishes, such as shrimp and chicken paella with chorizo and olives. In brief, this book is designed for people who routinely eat rotisserie chicken and are looking for ways to create complete and flavorful meals with or around it. Eric Akis

This book is full of ideas to make the most of it, from appetizers and side dishes, to creative ways with leftovers, even soup! My favourite is the Spicy Chicken, Mango and Cucumber Salad, so yummy in my brown bag lunch! And I am tempted to get myself a rotisserie gizmo for my barbecue, as the different flavour combos suggested in the book all sound way too good, especially the Piri Piri Chicken! The photos really get your mouth watering, too. What a great book!

Sailing into New York Harbor, Sigmund Freud stood on the deck and gazed upon a statue that was meant to symbolize someone else's vague notion of freedom. The embryonic field of psychology--so very interested to hear this theory, which excavated the depths of the psyche--anticipated his arrival in America with lamentably eager fanfare. Whether out of hubris or prescience Freud could only whisper, "They don't realize we are bringing them the plague." It was a theory that undercut our creative justifications for every action and belief, and it suggested our anxious identities are charted by a big Other--one we cannot begin to comprehend. As psychoanalysis undergoes a resurgence of interest within religious studies, political theory, and cultural criticism, its innovative and peculiar claims remain difficult to grasp without any guide for the perplexed. In God Is Unconscious: Psychoanalysis and Theology, Tad DeLay explores the provocative teaching of psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan and its implications for Christianity. Partly an introductory exposition of Freud, Žižek, and Lacan, and partly an application of psychoanalysis to religion and politics, this book is organized as a theological meditation on an incendiary theory. "Slow reading can bear fruits that are inaccessible to those who merely skim an author. DeLay has read Lacan diligently and searchingly, and he has come up with some important insights into the complex relationship of psychoanalysis, religion, and theology. Students of religion will profit from his clear and careful exposition of Lacan's rich and provocative thought. And students of Lacan will come to understand why only theologians can be truly atheistic: Our loyalties for deities come and go, but the true Other is neither in need of defense nor threatened by our disloyalties." --Ingolf U. Dalferth, Danforth Professor of Philosophy of Religion, Claremont Graduate University "Tad Delay has bravely explored and mapped the notoriously difficult territory of Lacan that others have only dared to read about second-hand. We should not only salute his courage, but be hugely grateful for the gifts he has returned with in this rich and important book at the bleeding edge of psychoanalysis and theology." --Kester Brewin, author of After Magic "God is Unconscious is a brilliant and accessible overview of Lacan's thought, demonstrating how it directly applies to religion and politics. Delay develops an original understanding of perversion, and how it applies to contemporary conservative Christianity. Anyone interested in understanding how religion works in social, political, and psychological terms should read this book." --Clayton Crockett, Professor and Director of Religious Studies, University of Central Arkansas Tad DeLay is a PhD student of philosophy of religion at Claremont Graduate University and holds an MA in theology and Biblical studies from Fuller Theological Seminary.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An excellent engagement By Patrick Frownfelter A fascinating and often startling look at the overlap between theology and Lacanian psychoanalysis, Tad DeLay has done an excellent job bringing Lacan's plague to the theological table, joining a host of intellectuals (e.g. Zizek) who take Lacan's writings and engage them from their standpoint. DeLay demonstrates masterfully patterns in American Christianity that line up eerily well with Lacanian thought, from master signifier to Big Other, deconstructing and burning away the chaff that obscures what exists at the Symbolic level in much of what we think about God, forcing the reader to face the Real.I won't lie to you; this book is difficult, especially if you don't know much about psychoanalysis (in all honesty, I want to tackle it again to try to dig deeper), but DeLay does a good job helping the reader understand what he is referring to and tying things together at the appropriate time. There were many moments where I couldn't put together what his thoughts were, only to have them become clear a page or two later. All in all, an excellent effort!

By @BrianMacArevey It's hard for me to give a serious judgment or critique of the author's presentation of Lacan, being that I am just a beginner. But I did find the book itself very readable, and insightful with regard to the ideas presented in it.After reading this book, I do feel like I have a foundation upon which to build up my understanding of Lacan's concepts; although I might have to read through it a second time to make sure that I have a truly solid grasp. Lacan is complex, but the author did a nice job of making him more accessible to a lay reader like myself.Reading "God is Unconscious" has, furthermore, had the effect of increasing my desire to study Lacanian psychoanalysis (and the philosophy of Slavoj Zizek, for that matter). Very thankful that I came across it.

Reads as a bit of a phd thesis, some wandering discussion, non sequiturs, rants. Glad I read it just for the Lacan presentation.

Twilight is getting ready for Christmas but is Gabi really ready for Twilight. This is the story of 2 lost souls searching for who they really are. Gabi trades apts with a stranger they both need to get away from their lives and Joe comes back to town to help his ailing grandfather. Little do they know las they find their true selves they will find their one true love. I love the journey Lori has taken them on and the holiday celebrations that the whole town shares in. Of course the holiday books are my favorite but no matter what the setting this is a book worth reading.

Adorable & Heartwarming Holiday Read By Presea What I loved about this novel was how the synopsis delivered its promise of a charming, sweet, and swoon-worthy story with a little bit of steam thrown in for good measure. The story’s heroine, Gabi Preston, switched homes over the holidays with a woman she barely knew for certain reasons. This part alone could have broken the deal for me if the heroine didn’t have character backbone, but I found Gabi to be complex and endearing despite her issues. When she met Joe Cheek amidst the backdrop of the Christmas card-perfect town of Twilight in Texas, she had no idea she was in for the ride of her life.Gabi’s character exposition was done well that it made me appreciate her motivations, including the spur-of-the-moment decision to switch places with Joe’s sister. I knew she had personal issues but she didn’t come off as wishy-washy or indecisive to me. If anything else, she had conviction and integrity, and her back story was something that got me teary-eyed in the middle of reading the entire thing. I love flawed characters, and I think Wilde did her justice. I’m glad it wasn’t one of those trust fund babies who had nothing else to do but whine and lament over the sorry state of their lives (like being filthy rich is a huge problem).Joe Cheek was another interesting love interest, and I was extremely fascinated by this character who had ADHD. I haven’t encountered that very often in the books I read, so this was something fresh. He was portrayed as a person who couldn’t stay put, someone who preferred to live fast and furious. But when a family emergency pushed him to take the reins of his grandfather’s Christmas tree farm, he found himself staying longer and getting to know his hometown’s new guest.Joe was my kind of guy—the type who can sweep any woman off her feet. He was genuinely warm and caring, and he dealt with his restlessness issues with a certain level of calm and maturity. He was what Gabi exactly needed: someone who saw her for her true worth. My only beef with his character was that he wasn’t as fleshed out as Gabi was. He was too good to be true. It would’ve been more interesting if he’d sometimes lose his cool or get riled up. I had to wonder if he ever got seriously pissed off at one point in his life. He was a bit two-dimensional in that aspect. While I enjoyed reading the story and I found myself turning page after age, the latter part of the novel felt like everything was being rushed. The issue with Gabi’s parents (who were a pair of douches if you ask me), Joe’s beef with his ex, and Gabi’s need to figure out feelings made me feel like the stakes weren’t raised to a level that would’ve made for a better conflict and resolution. Twilight seemed like a cozy and amazing town with wonderful people, but it was too good that it was almost unbelievable. It’s like everybody was nice all year round. Seriously?Wilde’s novel was charming and romantic, but you’d have to suspend your belief a bit because Twilight could be too fairytale-ish for most people’s liking. But if you’re looking for that cozy, satisfying, and swoon-worthy read this holiday season, I’ll Be Home for Christmas is your best bet.3.5 out of 5 starsReview posted on WillReadforFeels.com

In one book Lori Wilde creates a Christmas snow globe town of residents full of love for all who need its healing. Gabi Preston is lacking her own identity, having formed her self-image from her duty to others. Joe Cheek, affected by ADHD, returns to his hometown searching for his place in life, his true home. Enter his ex-wife and daughter with their own problems. And the Cheek family is on hand to support all of them.Never have I seen so many emotional issues intermingle in one book, but love triumphs in impressive ways.I loved this story. It was humorous (I had to stop and reread parts out loud), sexy, exasperating, and poignant. Most of all, it was hopeful. It will be on my list to read every Christmas season. This book was gifted to me by the author in exchange for my honest opinion.

Dasher gains life as a human, but she is missing a connection. She wants a mate and is willing to do whatever it takes to find one. One of nine reindeer that pulls Santa’s sleigh, Dasher wants nothing more than to find a partner, a mate, someone to be with. With the restrictions in the workshop, she has only one choice—she goes to the human world and starts trying men on for size. The down side to mating with a human is that they don’t remember her the following day. The depressing point is that none of them have the stamina to keep up with her and there are no second chances. Every time is the first time with a human. When she is assigned to a shop that needs an emergency audit, she enjoys the thrill of digging through the messy paperwork, and she has plans for the proprietor. One time might be enough if it was with him. Argus has been sent to bring back a reindeer, but the woman with smouldering dark eyes is more than he was banking on. She seems nice, but he wants her naughty. Excerpt: Ru calmly walked another stack of files to the cabinet and slowly sorted through it as she sought the alphabetical corollary. Her band and the bands of her siblings rattled on her arms under her sleeves. It made it hard to concentrate. For the last two months, she had managed to keep management at bay while her sisters were out in the human world. It was her job to be the decoy, as she was the only one who was bound to Santa’s sleigh. With the way the bands were buzzing, it was likely that someone wanted to do a briefing regarding this year’s path through the changing global weather patterns. Ru promised herself that she would ignore them until it wasn’t possible. Unfortunately, she knew that that particular moment was here. She could hear footsteps in the archive. There were never footsteps that didn’t belong to a reindeer in the nice and naughty list archive. There was only one reason for someone to make their way into the territory of the team—Santa wanted an audience. “Hello? Where is everyone?” Ru whistled sharply. The footfalls headed her way. She kept filing. It was what the reindeer did during the off-season. They were confined to the archive and did all the paperwork for the previous season. It was terminally boring and the reason for the visit today. She could feel the presence of the elf behind her. “Where are the others?” Ru continued to file the verifications of the fulfillment of the nice or naughty requirements. “Rudolph. Where are the others?” Administrator Rin wasn’t shrill, but he wasn’t completely calm. She turned when she finished her batch and looked at him with her hands folded in front of her. “What others?” He lifted his monitor—the flat display that told him where the reindeer were at any given time. Rudolph’s glow was red; the others were gold. She shrugged. “He is going to hear about this.” She shrugged again. “Come with me.” That was surprising. “Leave the archive?” “And the stables. Santa needs to know about this.” Ru walked with him to the upper level and through the crystalline gateway that normally blocked her progress. With Rin’s hand on her shoulder, she slid through the gateway and into the main hall. Santa was sitting with his mail and flipping through the letters that the elves had selected for special consideration. Rin cleared his throat. “Boss, I have Rudolph for you.” Santa looked up, his pretty elven features glowing brightly in the reflected light of his crystal palace. “Rudolph. Come and have a seat. I have been trying to contact you and the others from the team. Where have you been keeping yourself?” Santa patted the chair next to him and smiled. Ru moved toward him and took the seat. “I have been where I always am. I am in the archive or the stable. Isn’t that where I am supposed to be?” She tried to hold in her frustration, but it lashed out. Santa put the letter he was reading aside. He waved his hand and a pot of tea appeared between them. “Tell me wh

But at 3 bucks each, these short, and I do mean short, books are just not worth the cost. Wait until they go for a buck or come out in a set.

It makes for a very intriguing idea when the break out and head into the human world. I do wish we had a bit more back story on each one and the whole ages/time bending were better fleshed out. It isn't enough to keep me from enjoying the read, just left me with questions.I liked the whole feel of this romance. It was quick but it felt genuine. At least a beginning to a lasting love. The steam was really yummy. Just enough detail to bring up the temperature!! You can bet I will be eagerly awaiting the next book each week! I afford a little holiday romance magic.

I am completely hooked on Noelle Stevens books and can't wait for more. I loved these two characters and the different obstacles they had to deal with. The love, heartache and uncertainty. These two show that your background doesn't matter. Your past is just that, the past. I really disliked Grace (Brody's mother) but I was happy with the outcome with her in this book. And Reese's mom ... ugh I think she was the worst. The ending of this series was perfect and all came together nicely. I wish there was more but I guess I'll have to sit back and wait on the next series Noelle Stevens decides to do.

So glad Brody found out what his mother was doing and set her straight. And that he didn't let his love for Reese waiver wih all the obstacles they faced. Reese's mom was just hateful and I was glad Reese walked away from her. This story was so sweet. I was sad that it had ended. But it ended in an awesome way! Way to go Noelle Stevens!!

Brody's mom was horrible but I'm glad in the end, Grace apologized to Reese for her behavior. I'm hoping Ms. Jersey writes a book about Seth and him getting together with Avery.
