The Rancher's Daughters Book One By Jutzie Finally a Hero by Pamela TracyThe Rancher's Daughters Book OneJesse Campbell's life had been tough and it was about to get tougher. He was leaving prison a changed young man. He had a job waiting for him and he was now a Christian. Nothing is ever as easy as it seems. His first challenge walking through the gate was the woman waiting for him. His mother. And she had a big surprise for him.Eva Hubrecht needed to get their ranch in the black and her dad wasn't helping much. For instance, hiring an ex-con was not in their budget. Especially this man. Eva's two sisters had moved on and it was up to her to keep things going.I loved this story. Jesse faced the real struggle of facing the world after being in prison. Being prejudged before he had a chance to prove himself. And on top of that, he finds out he has a son he never knew about. What a great journey this story takes the reader on as it shows the different struggles of the characters.

Just released from prison, Jesse Campbell is determined to "make good" but he is met with challenges from the start. The mother who abandoned him years ago turns up to offer him a ride - and to introduce him to the 5-year-old son he didn't know he had. She stops at a restaurant for lunch and, true to form, slips out the back to stick him with the check and dump the scared little boy into his arms.Although Jesse has been promised a job on a dude ranch, a young child was not in the plan. How will Jesse care for horses, help out around the ranch, and give riding lessons while tending to a child who has special needs of his own?Eva, the boss's daughter, is concerned about finances and wishes her father wouldn't give second chances to so many ne'er do wells. Jesse knows he has no right to long for a "Hallmark life" but he hopes he can make his son feel safe and loved.A feel-good tale about redeeming the past and making all things new. Highly recommended.

First, Jesse is released from prison and is met by his estranged mother and a kid he didn't know he had. Then everything snowballs from there. I loved how Eva, who was so against him working at the ranch, became his biggest cheerleader and watching Timmy's journey from a scared little boy to a boy willing to stand up and help his dad brought tears to my eyes. Everything about this story tugged at my heart and I couldn't stop turning pages. Beautiful story, beautiful setting (I'm a little partial to AZ stories) and beautiful ending.

Despite Jack's murky marriage status and the disapproval of Ethan and the town, they are immediately drawn to each other. As Jack and Ellie struggle with their budding relationship, they unearth shattering secrets long buried and discover the two cases Jack is working, though fifty years apart, share a surprising connection that will rattle the town to its core.Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. Stillwater: A Jack McBride Mystery, by Melissa Lenhardt

Review Named Debut of the Month (November 2015) by Library Journal(*) "Seeking to get away from his soon-to-be-ex-wife and his disintegrating career with the FBI, Jack McBride moves to the small east Texas town of Stillwater with his son, Ethan. Unfortunately, on his first day as the new police chief, there is a double homicide at a trailer park; Rosa and Gilberto were hardworking but undocumented laborers who may or may not have uncovered something worth killing for. Then another body is uncovered, buried for more than 50 years under a tree down by the creek. Something is definitely rotten in Stillwater. VERDICT: A finalist for the 2014 Whidbey Writers’ MFA Alumni Emerging Writers Contest, this debut crime novel, spanning decades of Stillwater’s history, features an ingenious plot and a complicated protagonist with inner depths worth plumbing. Readers who miss Donald Harstad will appreciate this well-done police procedural, which is also a good choice for fans of Terry Shames’s “Samuel Craddock” mysteries, Lee Martin’s “Deb Ralston” series, or Tricia Fields’s “Josie Gray” novels." —Library Journal, starred review"With a twisting plot, nonstop action, and a sexy, complex protagonist you’ll root for from page one, Lenhardt brings the town of Stillwater, Texas (pop. 2,436), and all its long-buried secrets, to life. Fast-paced and tightly-written, Stillwater is a must-read for anyone who loves great crime fiction. Book two can’t come soon enough!" —Wendy Tyson, author of Killer Image and Deadly Assets"Stillwater runs deep with intrigue, passion, and long-buried secrets. Melissa Lenhardt weaves a rich tale of suspense as hot as the east Texas town in which it's set." —Annette Dashofy, USA Today bestselling author of the Zoe Chambers mysteries"Small-town loyalties and long-simmering secrets combine for a compelling page-turner! A fish-out-of-water lawman and his adolescent son try to escape the past in not-so-cozy Stillwater, Texas—but soon they're battling corruption, revenge, and murder. Fast-paced dialogue, an authentic setting, and engaging characters—Stillwater is a one-sitting read." —Hank Phillippi Ryan, award-winning author of Truth Be Told"Crisp and pacy writing pulls you in deep from page one, when Jack McBride strides into a crime scene and a world of trouble. Stillwater is the perfect combination of a tightly plotted tale peopled by rich, complex characters (plus one or two deliciously hateful true baddies). Slashed budgets, racial tensions, messy pasts—this small town is anything but cozy. The mystery itself is a classic puzzle, though: clever and convincing. Roll on Jack #2!" —Catriona McPherson, Agatha, Anthony and Macavity–winning author of the Edgar-nominated The Day She Died"Dangerous things lurk beneath the placid surface in Stillwater, Texas. Secrets shunning the light of day, decades-old betrayals, lies that have taken on a life of their own. Moody and atmospheric, utterly compelling, you don’t want to miss Melissa Lenhardt's marvelous debut novel." —Harry Hunsicker, former executive vice president of the Mystery Writers of America, author of The Grid"Secrets, lies, and betrayals run through Stillwater like irrigation through dry land. Melissa Lenhardt’s writing drips with detail to create a story that rushes like a wave toward an ever-twisting ending. Don’t let the name fool you; Stillwater's threats lie right below the surface." —Diane Vallere, bestselling author of the Material Witness, Madison Night, and Style & Error Mysteries

About the Author Melissa Lenhardt writes mystery, historical fiction, and women s fiction. Her short fiction has appeared in "Heater Mystery Magazine, " The Western Online, and "Christmas Nookies, " a holiday romance anthology. By Amazon Customer Stillwater is my favorite kind of book, it's one that focuses on characters and their development. I especially like the array of characters Lenhardt introduces in this novel. There are clearly lots of back stories, lots of depth and dynamicism where these characters can go and continue to tell stories that not only explore those back stories but intertwine with each other to keep continuity. After reading quite a few novels or even watching tv shows (I.e. Castle and the XFiles) where the writers enjoy beating you over the head with will they/won't they angst, I rather enjoyed that there was an immediate attraction between McBride and Ellie and it's progression. Most of all, I liked that there were twists I didn't see coming. That always keeps me turning pages and this is one of those books that will keep you thinking about the characters and the town Lenhardt has created after you've closed the book. A great debut novel form a promising writer, I look forward to reading more of her work!

Compelling mystery with well-drawn characters By Eva Scalzo Stillwater straddles the line between mystery and romance, but it is more than that too. The characters are well-drawn and engaging, from the lead, Jack McBride, his teenage son, Ethan, to minor characters such as Diego Vasquez, who's mysterious appearance and disappearance remains a question mark even after you've finished the novel. That isn't a problem, because the central mysteries--an apparent murder-suicide and a 50-year old skeleton in the woods--are resolved and mostly explained away by the end of the book. But Stillwater, TX is a place that has many secrets, and not all of the are brought to the surface in the novel, but just as things seem to creep toward resolution more questions and new avenues for story arise. It's a good thing that this isn't the last novel to be set in Stillwater. And I look forward to reading more from Ms. Lenhardt. Definitely a wonderful debut from this author.

Keeps you turning pages into the night By abigailmarie Moving to Stillwater, Texas, may have sounded peaceful for ex-FBI agent Jack McBride, but as he takes over in the town as chief of police, life is anything but dull. McBride and teenage son, Ethan, are looking to settle down and get away from the suspicions about his missing wife. Within a week, however, a young couple is found dead and a decades old skeleton is found. The scene of the deceased couple looks like an open and shut murder-suicide. But McBride has a sense it was anything but. McBride develops an intriguing relationship with local bookstore owner, Ellie, and begins to discover that Stillwater is not as quiet as it seems; rather, it runs thick with corruption, mystery and deception. Lenhardt’s voice is outstanding, her characters pop off the page and keep you turning pages deep into the night.

By Happy Camper I have the original South Beach book and this really doesn't have very much material compared to the original book. I guess that's fine for a free book. My biggest complaint about the book is the lack of nutritional information for each recipe. There is nothing to tell a novice if the recipe is suitable for the phase you are in. Also as noted by others, this book could use some serious editing.

Love this cookbook By helena I love this cookbook...I have tried so many different cookbooks that were supposed to have healthy recipes to help me with my diet and none of them worked I still struggled everyday but with book I truelly found some of the best healthy recipes that are working for me not against me...happy to say since I bought and started using this cookbook I have lost 20 pounds...I'm one very happy girl

Makes you wonder whether there are other inaccuracies. If you take the time to write and book and (hopefully) test the recipes, why wouldn't you take the time to re-read the book to check that it says what you meant.

In 2006, four years after the illegal prison in Guantánamo Bay first opened, the Pentagon finally released the names of the 773 men held there, as well as 7,000 pages of transcripts from tribunals assessing their status as 'enemy combatants'. Andy Worthington is the only person to have analysed every page of these transcripts. Drawing on these documents, as well as news reports and interviews with lawyers and released detainees, this book reveals, for the first time, the stories of all those imprisoned in Guantánamo. This book does not make for easy reading. Deprived of the safeguards of the Geneva Conventions, and, for the most part, sold to the Americans by their allies in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the detainees have struggled for five years to have their stories heard. Looking in detail at the circumstances of their capture, and at the coercive interrogations and unsubstantiated allegations that have been used to justify their detention, 'The Guantánamo Files' reveals that the majority of those captured were either Taliban foot soldiers or humanitarian aid workers, religious teachers and economic migrants, who were caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. The book also uncovers stories of torture in Afghanistan and Guantánamo, and contains new information about the process of 'extraordinary rendition' that underpins the US administration's 'war on terror'. Who will speak for the 773 men who have been held in Guantánamo? This passionate and brilliantly detailed book brings their stories to the world for the first time.

The Guantanamo Files: The Stories of the 774 Detainees in America's Illegal Prison, by Andy Worthington

Review This is an important book. If you care about our Government's complicity in these illegal and horrific acts then this book provides the evidence. Carefully researched and documented, it reveals a story of appalling brutality. The people are not mere ciphers but, as their stories unfold, their pain becomes our concern. -- Ken Loach Extraordinary rendition, false imprisonment, inhumane treatment ... has forever destroyed and reshaped the lives of hundreds of men, of whom I was one. The subject matter of this book is imperative, being the first of its kind to collate and describe accounts from the prisoners themselves and pitting them against the purported reasons for their incarceration - without charge or trial -- Moazzam Begg, former Guantanamo detainee and spokesman for CagePrisoners The [book] is a meticulous piece of documentation about torture. ... It recalls the age old story of the willingness of both governments and ordinary people to inflict pain upon each other for financial and political gain while exercising a misguided sense of power over those peoples perceived as inferior to themselves. This is an extremely vital and important piece of work. -- Marty Fisher, Co-Producer of Alex Gibney's "Taxi to the Dark Side", a film about the U.S. torture activities in Afghanistan, Guantanamo and Iraq

About the Author Andy Worthington is a freelance historian. He is the author of two books on modern British social history, and his work has also appeared in the Guardian and the Idler.

Putley British journalist Andy Worthington is perhaps the world's leading expert on Guantánamo Bay and its inmates. Basing his research mostly on the Pentagon's own documents, obtained under freedom of information legislation, Worthington has produced a unique compendium of individual histories, combining them with a narrative of events in the "war on terror". The overwhelming case made by the book is that, amongst the great numbers of prisoners who were swept up in Afghanistan, the majority were either completely innocent men caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, or were unimportant foot-soldiers whose involvement in an inter-Muslim civil war both pre-dated 9/11 and had no connection with it. The treatment of these captives has been wholly disproportionate.Helpless men, of whom some have subsequently been released, were tortured before arriving at Guantánamo Bay, the torture producing forced - and untrue - confessions of their links with al-Qaeda. In a number of cases the torture was "outsourced" to selected countries. The conduct of the CIA and the US military towards their prisoners recalls in some instances the fate of prisoners at the hands of the Gestapo in World War Two. Not coincidentally, perhaps, the term adopted by the US authorities, "enhanced interrogation techniques", expresses in English the Nazis' identical euphemism for similar forms of torture.Following rendition to Guantánamo Bay, prisoners receive brutal treatment in supermax lockdowns. The majority of US "detainees" in Guantánamo Bay are being kept isolated in long-term solitary confinement, in high-security facilities. While there appears to be no operational necessity for such long-term isolation, one consequence of it is permanent psychological damage. In plain language, the detainees are being driven insane by the conditions of their incarceration. According to the normal meaning of words this is "cruel punishment" which the eighth amendment to the US Constitution specifically prohibits. The US appears to think such revenge against captives in its war on terror to be its moral right. Unfortunately for the Guantánamo detainees, because they are not US citizens, and not held in "the sovereign United States", the US Constitution does not operate for their protection.Medical opinion is that the incarceration of prisoners in indefinite long-term solitary is a form of mental torture. As such it is contrary to the 1984 Convention Against Torture ratified by the United States. The supermax prison at Guantánamo Bay has been described as "harsher than any of the Death Row prisons" on the US mainland. On the evidence provided by Andy Worthington, the judgment has to be that the US just over-reacted to the events of 9/11. Quite apart from the perverse decision to go to war in Iraq, what other verdict could there be, considering its adoption of torture as a method of punishment, and torture as a technique for the gathering of faulty intelligence?

Underlying evil By John Fisher This is a very detailed volume that takes a painstaking effort to detail, details of the various individuals who have been caught up in this so called war on terror. It puts a human face to those incarcerated and a human story as to who they are.And it is true there are some bad buggers in there, I think that I can account for perhaps 4 or was it 5 out of some 800.But this is primarily the story of who the others are. There is an underlying story in this volume, it sits just in the background and that is the bit that will really disturb the reader. That there is an extraordinary incompetence in who was captured and an unbelievable naivety in the screening process of these people it does not surprise. I think that to most outside the US of A, this would be taken as a given; recent history allows us to draw no other conclusion. The underlying story:When I was a young lad in the early 60's our books and reading material often included stories of Nazi Germany and the prison systems that operated during that period, I well remember the revulsion I felt at that time as a 12 year old reading these stories of the abject cruelty of the guards toward those in their charge. In reading Andy's story of the Guantanamo detainees, I suddenly realised that I was reading stories about those same cruel, or should I say evil, sadistic people. The German prison guards; only this time they were Americans in Afghanistan, Iraq and Cuba.Which then makes me wonder, how is it that a very religious nation, primarily Christian to boot, preaching goodwill to all, a nation that is going to rid the world from evil can be responsible for such evil. There is no question in my mind that the deeds mentioned in Andy's story will stand up to scrutiny. The evidence from all sources of the many evil deeds are overwhelming. So where does this evil-sadistic nature come from. How does a nation create such evil creatures to do its bidding. That approval for the level of conduct heads right up to the administration so what conclusion do we draw about the US of A."Erfing" as is carried out at Guantanamo to this day. What sort of training goes into getting 5 to 8 thugs with shields, batons etc to enter a cell or gage and belt the living daylights out of the single inmate? What type of people, cowards in the very essence of the word, are able to behave in this manner? In uniform, representative of all that is supposedly good of the US of A army. What type of soldiers does the US of A army train. The "peroneal strike" and the story of Dilawar the taxi driver will bring you in for a reality check and not a good one.The underlying story is the most frightening aspect of this book, a story that must be read.

A handy resource By Dienne Andy Worthington's "The Guantanamo Files" is an invaluable resource to anyone who wants the truth about the "detainees" (i.e., prisoners) at GITMO, mostly straight from the horse's mouth (or, well, the government's anyway). Chapter after chapter he explodes the myth that these "hardened al Qaeda/Taliban fighters" were all captured on the battlefield and represent the "worst of the worst". Quite the opposite, in fact. Apparently the worst of the worst either managed to slip away or were let go by U.S. and coalition forces. It was mostly just poor unlucky saps that got caught up in the net of Arabs captured by Northern Alliance and Pakistani forces and sold to the U.S. for handsome bounties.Worthington begins the book with an account of the "uprising" at Qala-i-Jangi. At first glance, it would be hard to argue that these prisoners were not captured "on the battlefield". However, Worthington does a remarkable job of bringing to light details that make it clear that this was no uprising of hardened jihadists determined to fight to the death, but rather a brutal betrayal and massacre of low level foreign fighters who had already surrendered on the belief that they would be disarmed and allowed to return to their country. The suicides and "riots" happened only after it became clear that the captors planned to kill the captives anyway. In response to the "riots", coalition forces bombed the fortress with daisy cluster bombs, poured oil into the basement where the captives were hiding out, and later tried to flood the basement. Of the 400+ bodies found in the aftermath, at least 200 had their hands tied behind their backs. The fact that 86 men survived this massacres is evidence, in the government's eyes, that they must be hardened fighters. Much like if a woman survived being held underwater during the Salem Witch Trials, it was "proof" that she must be a witch. From there Worthington goes on to list, in almost mind-numbing detail, the capture of various ethnic and other groups in Pakistan, Afghanistan and elsewhere at different time periods. Most of these men were captured in mosques, guest houses ("safe houses" in government lingo), at their homes or homes of friends, family or strangers, and even in hospitals - all far from any "battlefield", no matter how liberally the word is construed. Worthington details the government's allegations against these men and compares them to their own stories. Many claim to be humanitarian workers, teachers or merchants, yet the government has never made any attempt tofollow up any possible evidence for or against these men. Often Worthington lays out the most egregious examples of government absurdities and overreaching.Worthington also details the conditions at some of the prisons and camps (many secret) to which these men were initally taken, the brutal treatment they received along the way, as well as the sheer confusion among U.S. forces as to who these men even were. Interrogation and screening mechanisms were so chaotic that efforts to determine who should be released and who should be shipped to Gitmo were almost haphazard. By the time they arrived in Gitmo, they were a motley collection of conscripted cooks and foot soldiers mixed with humanitarian workers, taxi drivers and even teenagers. Few if any high-ranking al Qaeda or Taliban members were among the mix. Finally, Worthington explores the situation at GITMO itself, including the legal challenges, the hunger strikes and the suicide attempts (as well as the three successful "suicides", which the evidence now indicates may have been murder). He explodes the myths that GITMO is some kind of "terrorist resort" where the prisoners are eating racks of lamb while having their feet massaged. He relates testimony after testimony of abuse and degradation suffered by the prisoners, including an in-depth look at the torture of Mohammed al Qahtani.Worthington was one of the first to do in-depth research based on the government's own documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. More and more evidence is coming out that supports Worthington's early conclusions: the unlawful indefinite detention under harsh conditions of so-called "enemy combatants" at GITMO without allowance for them to prove their innocence is a blot on America's human rights records. If there is further evidence that these men really are the "worst of the worst", the government should release it. But from the evidence so far, most of the prisoners at Gitmo appear to be, in Biblical terms, the "least of the least".

With this blow Jeb loses the desire to live, until he meets a man even more severely injured than himself. Taking strength from this unfortunate fellow soldier's misery, the newly discharged Jeb makes plans to head home. It's not an easy road, and Jeb is hampered by his injuries, the dangers of bushwackers and Union soldiers who are raiding the countryside. Ironically Jeb befriends an old slave—now a runaway heading north to freedom. Together they stand a better chance of surviving the chaos and they team up in their travels. Challenges and heartache await them on the dusty trail, but the pair set out for Montana with little more then their courage and dreams of a better tomorrow. Another exciting historical adventure, and story of friendship and bravery from best selling western author W.R. Benton.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Silently Beat the Drums is an Excellent First Book in a Series that, I Hope, will be Keeping us Entertained for Years. By Bill Anderson Length: Print 316 pages; Audible, not available but it definitely should be.This book is targeted to .Action-Adventure, this is a Western with a twist. What was the Amazon Rank on the date this review was published? 12,720.Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first?.Yes, this is the first in a series. Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures? No. I do think, though, that it would be a better read if the author had stayed with the recommendations of Stephen King and other proven writers, when writing dialogue. As you can see by the below excerpt, the writer chose to write dialogue in the manner in which the ear records the sound, so as to indicate the ethnicity or geographical background of the speaker, using ‘ya’ instead of you, and so forth. There was a time when this method was common, but it is a bit confusing to readers. Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read? This is a definite page turner and a fast, easy read. What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made? Adult English. Although there are no f-bombs, and only a few sh-words, I consider the language and the topic to be Adult, although certainly, if it were a movie, it would probably be rated NC-13 for language and, perhaps, for graphic violence. My biggest pleasure or disappointment was? Other than trying to capture accents and ethnical differences through spelling of the spoken dialogue, I have only praise for this first installment in a series that I hope will not stop at three, four or five books. Down the road, in fact, I expect to see spin-offs to what could well rival Matt Bolan’s The Executioner series of books. My biggest disappointment is that it has not been converted into an audiobook for release at Audible. I reckon Jeb Patton could become a viral hit with just the right promotion…maybe even a movie someday.EXCERPTJeb took a seat on the same log as the man started to prepared dinner. He looked at the girl and saw big tears running down both cheeks and her nose was running. She had not moved once since he’d first seen her. Taking a piece of cloth he carried from his rear pocket, he handed it to the girl.“What brings ya here, girl?” he asked in a soft voice as she took the rag from his hand.“Yankees kilt my pa yesterday. They kilt him because they wanted to rape me and pa tried to fight ‘em.” she replied and started crying again.Jeb let her cry, because he knew from experience that sometimes crying was the best medicine, or that’s what his momma always told him anyway. He watched as Moses skinned the rabbit and cut it into chunks of tender white meat. Then the old man placed the greens, onions, roots, and rabbit into the pot of boiling water. Jeb was always surprised how the old man could make a meal out of almost nothing.“They hanged him, the Yanks did. Why did they do that to him? I thought the Yankees came to make us free! My daddy never hurt nothin’. He was a kind and hard workin’ man. Why would they kill him, suh?” the young girl asked between sobs.“I ain’t got answers to that, girl. I don’t understand a lot of things goin’ on in the world these days. Ya got a name? Or, do I keep callin’ ya girl?” Jeb asked. He didn’t bring the rape up, because the thought of discussing it embarrassed him.“My name’s Faye, but I ain’t got no last name. Slaves never have a last name, unless they take the masters name.” Faye said and then gave a big shudder and a loud groan.“Well, Faye, nice to meet ya. If ya are goin’ to be with us tonight, ya have to do your share of the work. If ya don’t work, ya don’t eat. Okay?”“Sounds fair ‘nough, but what can I do?” she asked and then sniffled loudly.“Go gather up all the dead wood ya can find, because it is going to be a cold and wet night. Ya’ll sleep warmer with a fire goin’ all night. Then, when yer done, we’ll all have dinner.” Jeb watched as the young girl walked into the woods to get the wood. It had worked, at least for the time being. He hoped by keeping her busy over the next few days her grief would be kept to a minimum and she would start to heal. She is a strong one to take what she’s experienced and even keep moving, Jeb thought as he pulled out a plug of tobacco and took a bite. As he worked the chew in his mouth he gave thought to her situation. He considered adding her to their small group, knowing it would only cause problems for them. After all, he was already traveling with one black and there was no way he could see himself taking on another one, especially one this attractive. Jeb knew having a beautiful young woman along would eventually lead to trouble. I need to give this some serious thought, before I ask her to travel with us.Jeb learned the hard way, a long time ago, that physical attraction could cause a lot of serious trouble between a man and a woman. He learned it when his girlfriend, Edna, had gotten pregnant after a few rolls in the hay with him. He tried to marry her to make things right, but her daddy wouldn’t allow that to happen. As a matter of fact, her father had tried to kill him. Jeb was forced to leave a good paying job in St. Louis and head back home to avoid a fight. No, the girl would be helped and then she would be sent on her way.Moses was humming “Rock of Ages” as he cooked and as usual, Jeb was still amazed at the quality of the old mans voice. He felt a dull pain in his missing leg and repositioned the stub on the log.“This stew will be done in ‘bout ten minutes. It ain’t much food fer three people. How come ya didn’t get us a deer or a bear?” Moses grinned.“Well now, I guess the good Lord decided that we should be eatin’ rabbit tonight and not deer, and I ain’t hardly strong ‘nough to take on no bear either. I took what was offered.” Jeb said and then chuckled.“I’ll be doin’ me a heap of prayin’ tonight that the Lord will let us have a deer tomorrow then. Mayhap we can find one, jes’ like that chicken back a ways, that can talk to us.” As soon as he said it, Moses burst into a loud laugh.Jeb was still laughing with Moses when Faye returned with her fifth load of squaw wood. It was all wet due to the recent rains, but she laid the wood out near the fire to help it dry out.“Faye, that’s enough fire wood, this will last us the night.” Jeb said as he took two plates out of his saddlebags. “Ya and Moses eat first and then I’ll eat. I ain’t as hungry as ya two look to be.”“Ya gonna eat off the same plate after a slave girl?” Faye asked.“Faye, when yer hungry enough, you’ll eat after anybody. I’m hungry, so ya just eat fast.”Benton, W.R. (2015-10-31). Silently Beats the Drum (The Drum Series Book 1) (Kindle Locations 579-616). Loose Cannon Ent.. Kindle Edition.Bottom Line:This author has dabbled in other stories, but in Silently Beat the Drums, I suspect, this author has found his niche. At least I will follow him. I got this book through Kindle Unlimited but will be purchasing a copy later this week.Comments?
