The Dutch Oven - A Classic Camping Luxury

If you grew up camping with the Boy Scouts, you've probably got fond memories of meals and desserts cooked on a hot bed of coals in a Dutch Oven. But I have found that many people today don't know a lot about Dutch Ovens and how they can improve camp cookery. And many people think that the Dutch Oven is a relic from pioneer days. Luckily, this venerable implement is alive and well and helping to provide tasty campfire desserts for today's campers.

Dutch Ovens are traditionally are made of cast iron, although there are some Dutch Ovens that are made of aluminum. The oven is basically a large deep pot with thick walls. It also consists of a thick lid that nests snugly with the pot. The lid has a rim along the outer edge that enables hot coals to be placed upon the lid. The bottom of the pans often have three or four legs that allow them to stand in the coals rather than directly on the hot coals. Some models are designed without legs and sit directly on the coals or on some type of rack in the fire pit. A sturdy wire handle is attached to the main pot to allow it to be lifted off of the coals.

Versatility is the name of the game for Dutch Oven cooking. They can be used like any other pot for general cooking or frying. But they are best used for baking and roasting a variety of dishes. When using the Dutch Oven for baking or roasting, a bed of coals is prepared. If I'm camping where I have the ability to build a proper fire, I will find a level spot to use my Dutch Oven. However if I'm unable to build a large fire or I don't have the time to build a fire to have proper coals, I will use charcoal briquettes for my cooking. This provides me the ability to enjoy my Dutch Oven even in my backyard for cookouts. I use an old iron plow disc to hold my bed of charcoal.

I have found that it's best to preheat my the oven before I actually add my ingredients. Preheating the oven creates a much more uniform cooking temperature for your culinary creation. Cooking with a Dutch Oven is not an exact science. The heat is regulated by adding or removing coals from the top lid or by moving the entire setup to an area with fewer coals. Sometimes it is necessary to rotate the lid or the pot to eliminate hot spots where the heat has been focused on a particular spot.

It is necessary to check the progress of your dish during the cooking process. This requires lifting the lid up. The lid has tab protruding from the center with a hole in the middle of the tab. You can use a pair of pliers, a multi-tool, or a specially made hook to lift the lid. For the sake of safety, be sure to utilize a sturdy tool for lifting the lid. During cooking, the lid will have actively burning coals on top of it and will be extremely hot.

Your imagination is your only limit to what you can cook with this classic camping implement. You could bake a chicken or a roast, make a hearty stew, bake homemade buttermilk biscuits, or prepare a multitude of desserts. I have found that recipes that have more moisture in them work best for this type of cooking. The drier the recipe, the higher the risk of burning the bottom of the food. It is tempting to put too many coals under the base, thus causing the bottom of your dish to be burned.

There is a rim around the lid to allow you to put burning coals on it. The pot has legs to set down in the coals on the bottom. Heat from 2 different directions making a convenient oven. The book contains recipes for this kind of pot and the one that you can use stove top or in home oven. There are recipes from all around the world. You should be able to find a good meal for your family.

I can honestly say that there was never a dull moment and I had the hardest time putting this book down.After the way Hate to Love You ended, I was dying and I mean dying to get my hands on this book. I had to know how things played out. Chase and Ari’s journey to HEA was definitely a difficult one. My heart really went out to the two of them. I felt like they could never catch a break. Just when things seemed like they would be ok and they got back on track, something would happen to mess things up. So, yeah, their journey was a difficult one, but I feel like everything that had to go through made them come out stronger and my opinion the rough road was totally worth it.Love to Hate You was such an entertaining read. The anticipation for this book was killing me I jumped right in and didn’t come up for air until about 2AM! Yes you read that right 2AM in the morning! Once I started I couldn’t put it down. Since Hate to Love you, the first book, left me wondering where this will book would take me I was ready to get in! I Hated to Love this book. In the absolute way possible!Chase and Ari’s relationship and story is amazing. The dynamic of the story is unbelievable. The uncertainty I felt when started slowly fading away. I felt like everything was right at the moment then….BAM! I was hit with so much emotion I was crying ugly tears! I was broken but as good as Isabelle is it took me awhile to get over that event. She sucked me back in and I was happy again! I had no idea where the story was going to go because it was sooooo good at the moment. I love Ari and Chase. On a side note I have to mention Charlie and Spencer, I love these two, they are the best like seriously if they were real we would be together all the freaking time! Charlie is hoot and I love the relationship she has with Chase and especially the one she has with Ari. Spencer when he gets involved is hilarious. Always giving Chase crap because he got it from him for YEARS!Time to really grab the tissues. Big fat ugly tears! I just knew something was going to come out of this and it wasn’t going to be good at all. What is life? What is life? Gosh I don’t even know how to exactly explaining what I am feeling half way through the book. The rollercoaster is far from over and I am ready for this to go down! I was on the edge of my seat from this moment on. I don’t know how many times I wanted to throw my kindle at the wall and then there were times I just wanted to hug it so I could hug Ari personally! Isabelle you really do this to me EVERY. SINGLE. TIME!!Towards to end of the book I was so freaking happy my cheeks hurt from reading it! Especially the running photography part! I can’t believe that was actually in there! Facing fears and breaking down walls is exactly what Chase and Ari did thru the whole book. Overcoming what is thrown at you and the downfalls and the struggle to get back to where you want to be. Gosh I have so many things I could say and it wouldn’t be enough for this book!Chase and Ari story is a journey that I will go through over and over again as I re-read this book. I found this novel somewhat interesting because as I was reading I found out that this was three stories in one that seemed to tie altogether. I loved how this author presents us with Beverly who manages the Orange Blossom Inn in Pinecraft, Florida and their has been a robbery where now she must call Eric the owner and tell him of this situation. It seems like since Eric had met Beverly some time ago he had feelings for her, so he leaves Pennsylvania and moves to Pinecraft Will this bring him closer to Beverly? What secrets did Eric have than may destroy any feelings Beverly may have for him? Will these two people be able to find common ground and love? But where there is 'forgiveness, mercy, happiness and good will to all men' will there be any good from all of the unexpected obstacles that are put in front of them? Well, this is a Christmas novel so what will happen after the robbery at the inn? Be ready for a read that will give you humor, tears and even finding yourself cheering your favorite character on as you will see 'such fear, faith, love. devotion, redemption and second chances' that is displayed in this well told story. The main questions.... Will Beverly be able to face her fears and move on after the robbery? Beverly has gone to a lots and when it looks like she may even love again will her faith be put to the test? How will this Amish community react to a marriage between Beverly and Eric? Enchanting Book By Cara Ross So it has been a while since I have read an Amish/Mennonite romance, which is guess is pretty ironic as I live close to one of the biggest settlements in America, but I guess I have been so wrapped up in contemporary and historical romances that I forgot about this subgenre. But then I saw this story and I don’t know why, but the story seemed to speak to me. SO I delved into this book and I am so very glad that I did as this book opened my eyes up to what I had been missing.The Christmas bride in Pinecraft is really three stories in one, but they are all tied in together. But I am only going to tell you about our main characters and leave the rest as a surprise. So we start with one of our main characters Beverly Overholt. Beverly runs the Orange Blossom Inn and has done for the past 3 years since her Aunts death, at one time she thought she owned the whole business, but that turned out to be untrue and she was shocked to find out that englisher Eric Wagler owned the building. But this was 3 years later and she has not only become very comfortable with her role of manager and her relationship with Eric has blossomed too. But now Beverly has to call Eric in Philadelphia to tell him that the inn had been robbed!Eric has been in love with Beverly since he met her that one fateful day, when he inherited the inn and now he is selling up his life in Pennsylvania and moving to Pinecraft to see if Beverly cares for him. But Eric has secrets of the past that will come back to haunt him and possibly destroy any feelings Beverly has for him.But this is a Christmas story and Christmas is a time of forgiveness, happiness and good will to all men and Eric, Beverly and the people of Pinecraft are reminded of that and good things come from such sorrow.I have not read a Pinecraft story before, but it honestly didn’t matter one little bit! This story is truly a standalone and I love every minute of it! This book really does remind you of humility and that not everything is as it seems. I honestly loved every single one of the characters in this book, because they honestly didn’t feel like characters in a book, but friends that are a vital part of my life!So, down to the basics; the story was beautifully written, with no potholes and flowed smoothly. The book really provokes you to this about the hardships of people, not only in the story, but also in real life, but she does it in such an amazing way that it leaves you breathless and filled with joy by the end of the story.The Christmas Bride in Pinecraft is such an enchanting book and that is why I give it 10 out of 10!

Donelson The last book in the Amish Brides of Pinecraft series was worth the wait. Manager of the Orange Blossom Inn, Beverly Overholt faces a challenge this holiday season. Inn owner Eric comes to help her, but his feelings are more than platonic. Beverly learns about Eric's past but even that is a good thing because it can help two local boys. Will Eric and Beverly admit their true feelings? Will this be a holiday to remember in Pinecraft? Shelley's characters feel like my friends and I was eager to catch up with them. Beverly has done a lot of maturing throughout the series and especially this book. I'm sad to be done with the series but the ending was great. I'm part of Shelley's group "The Buggy Bunch" and received a complimentary copy but I also purchased a copy.
