The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (CBMW) prefers not to use the words "patriarchy" or "hierarchy" when describing their theology. Yet, their theology sounds and looks remarkably like the hierarchy that exists within patriarchy with its insistence that men should always be in charge and women should always obey. But how solid are the arguments in favor of the man’s rule over the woman, and how well do they hold up under scrutiny? “Recovering From Un-Biblical Manhood and Womanhood: A Response to Evangelical Patriarchy” examines the main arguments in an easy-to-read dialogue format that allows the reader to reach his/her own conclusions while enjoying a deep, yet lighthearted, theological discussion.

This is one of the most entertaining books we've ever read. At times it is so funny that you find yourself laughing and having a good time, and totally forget that theology is usually a dull topic to read! What we love most about her writing is that she works so hard to develop a full logical argument, address both sides of an issue and really think things through to reasonable conclusions, all the while staying faithful to the Bible. Many theologians don't like answering questions because they don't really want to think things through because then their conclusions fall apart. But the Bible says "come let us reason together" because we need to really test all doctrine before accepting it. Thats what this book does so well. Plus, throughout this book her deep love for God and strong humility shine through. This book is worth reading just for the entertainment value. By the time you finish it, you'll be surprised at how much you've learned about what Jesus would do!

By Tim Susanna Krizo's title is a take-off from the collection of complementarian and patriarchal essays collected by John Piper and Wayne Grudem in Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood: A Response to Evangelical Feminism. She takes the essays and addresses each of them through a very readable dialog in the chapters of her book. The conversation is between a student and teacher, identified as Christian and Theologian. It becomes clear that both learn from each other as they discuss the problematic reasoning in the essays Piper and Grudem chose for their book.Krizo argues that to give the word “head” in Ephesians 5 the meaning of leadership not only uses it in a way that Paul did not intend nor would his readers have understood it that way, but it places the husband in a role the Bible nowhere puts on anyone in relation to anyone else. As she explains, "If theologians transfer the reality of Christ to the husband [(that is, placing the husband in the role of Christ to the wife in the same relationship as Jesus has with his people)] he becomes literally a Messiah to his wife, and that creates all kinds of problems in theology."This book is helpful and easily readable for those who are looking for insight into the bad doctrine found in complementarian theology.
