Discover 17 essential secrets of what it is really like to become a missionary! I stood there in the bookstore saying to myself “God, please don't make me become a missionary!” I hoped there would be a book on the shelf that said 'Read this to make it all better.' That's the book I wrote. 'Read this to make it all better.' There are too many books about how to become a missionary. None of them say the things written inside these covers. Join me on my own personal journey of becoming something I never aspired to be, a missionary to Papua New Guinea. I've read plenty of books on the topic and none of them were nearly as insightful as sitting down with someone who has actually been there, and asking them the hard questions. Did you face hardship? What was the grossest part of living there? What was the best part? Would you do it again? Aspiring missionaries, missionary supporters, missions minded people, frustrated missionaries, families of missionaries, friends of missionaries …. all of you need to read this book. Don't Call Me Missionary is humorous, candid and a little bit irreverent. If the only thing holding you back from becoming a missionary is the fact that you don't like other missionaries, then you need to read this book. I might be the first missionary who ever wrote a book inspired by the fact that I never wanted to become a missionary in the first place. I'll point out the silly and the ridiculous. I'll warn you about dangers that others failed to mention to me. In this book, you'll see the naked underbelly of the missionary life. I purposely avoid politically correct terminology because it is confusing. Too many books are trying to make missions attractive. This one isn't. The way I see it, if God is putting a call on your heart, you have to obey. This book is about giving you the information so that you can obey to the best of your ability. I tell plenty of stories in this book. For some, the stories about my journey to becoming a missionary will be an encouragement to you. I tell stories about life in Papua New Guinea. If you're interested in learning about Papua New Guinea, this book will share a few stories you won't hear elsewhere. I tell stories about life as a missionary overseas. If you're looking to become a missionary than this book will encourage and inform you. If you're a family member concerned about their soon-to-be-missionary, this book will give you insights as to how to love them through it. The cold hard truth is, if you've decided to become a missionary your life is about to get very hard. Don't bother reading any books that say that becoming a missionary is easy and fun. Don't bother reading any books about living overseas that make it all seem like a tropical paradise. This book will help prepare you for difficulty. Becoming a missionary is the hardest choice you'll ever make, and it could be the most rewarding one. Nothing worth doing is easy. Don't Call Me Missionary will be an encouragement to anyone who is curious about missions because there is nothing so helpful as good honest, no punches pulled, truth.

About the Author Chad Owens lives in Papua New Guinea with his wife Kendal and two children, Calvin and Sydney. They moved to Papua New Guinea in 2007 and have lived there since. In 2004 God put the call on his heart to move to Papua New Guinea and he simply didn't want to leave his comfortable life in the Silicon Valley, CA. Along the way, while others were looking around thinking 'this is great, I'm finally becoming a missionary' Chad looked with different eyes. He and his family now call Papua New Guinea home, but it wasn't always that way.

By bookworm This is a heart warming, soul lifting, funny and inspirational journey of how the Lord lead the author (and his family) to the point where he knew he needed to become a missionary in PNG and what he has learned during the journey. It is an honest down to earth look into the author’s soul and his deep desire to follow the Lord’s calling. I found myself laughing with him one moment and very concerned for his (and the families) welfare other moments. It definitely gives you a bird’s eye view of what it can be like living in a 3rd world country thousands of miles from home. This book can touch the hearts and lives for any believer who is searching for a deeper relationship with Him. Through the stories in this book you can see God’s heart and love for all of us that trust Him. It also paints a picture for those of us who can’t travel to a 3rd World Country to see what it could be like.

A Unique Account of Serving God Overseas By Clare K Do you want to know what it's really like to live overseas and use practical skills to support mission work? Would you like to find this out from a great story teller who will leave you rolling on the floor laughing rather than bored to tears? Do you want to hear about the realities of the challenges and joys of this life from someone who is honest and real about himself and his experiences? Are you planning to serve overseas and would like to know how better to prepare? Would you like to understand better the lives of friends who are serving overseas? If the answer to any of these questions is yes then I would recommend 'Don't Call Me Missionary'. If you answered 'no' to all these questions then this might not be the book for you.

Chad has a wonderful way of saying things By Harold Huntley A very readable book that is very engaging and interesting to read; Chad has a wonderful way of saying things, from the very funny "The Toilet Prayer" to the concluding comments on how wonderfully God works in his everyday life in Papa New Guinea. His reflections on the need for flexibility and the sensitivity to a different culture are important. The humor is wonderful, but his serious sections on family, home and the four D's as well as getting through the "lows" are intriguing reading. Chad states in his "outtroduction" that 'since 99% of the people reading this book' will know him -- I encourage anyone who does not know Chad to read it and see if we can get that number reduced (sort of like golf -- the lower your score the more you win:-)
