"Young people need someone who is crazy about them." – Walter Brueggemann “Originally authored by Francis Clark a hundred years ago, Ashley Denton has overhauled the first writing, taking care to update and revise the text to make it more readable for a modern audience of young people. The book will be especially helpful to youth pastors, student ministry leaders and parents of young people.” –Robert E. Coleman (Author of Master Plan of Evangelism) “Francis Clark believed that Jesus was the embodiment of everything that young people longed for. The challenge of every generation is simply to give young people an accurate picture of Jesus Christ. Clark believed that if young people could just see the winsome personality of Christ, they would naturally be drawn to him, like a magnet is to metal.” –Ashley Denton

By Brian Harvey “The Personality of Jesus” is a little book compared to many on my shelves, but its lack of size does not mean it lacks substance. Denton’s reworking of an old book helps to bring new life and a new audience to a book that, sadly, has been forgotten. The premise of the book is that young people are naturally attracted to Jesus; that his personality makes him someone worth knowing. It would be hard to argue against this when you read how Jesus is described in this book. With fourteen chapters in less than 100 pages, you know the chapters are going to be short. Each chapter also has a number of questions for reflection. This helps to make the book something that can be easily shared with a small group of teenagers, or a group of youth leaders in your church. Having said that, I don’t think this book should be considered to be exclusively for ministry to youth. Anyone who is wanting to learn something of Jesus will find this book helpful. Naturally it won’t tell you everything about Jesus, but it will give you some important insights into him.I have known Jesus for over forty years, and have been teaching people about Jesus for well-over twenty, but reading this little book has made me see some things clearer. The humility of Jesus is a stand out aspect of his personality that this book has shone a bright light on.I’m pleased that I read this book. I hope many others will read it too.

A "Handbook" of the personality traits of Jesus By Jay Denton Cruising through this easy-to-read, updated version by Ashley Denton was an enjoyable tour of the personality characteristics of Jesus that I appreciated having distilled in this format. Every once in a while - but not often enough - a seminal work connects the dots from a variety of viewpoints into what can be called a "handbook", and this book does just that. As a fitting tribute to the 100 year anniversary of the original writing, and knowing firsthand about Ashley's calling and noteworthy success in leading youth ministry around the world, I can't help but think that if Francis Clark were alive today, he would find in Denton and Robert Coleman (Master Plan of Evangelism) two contemporaries cut from the same cloth. With four children of my own - two teenagers and two recent "ex-teens", I fully agree that the key personality traits describing Jesus are those that resonate with our youth. Authenticity, approachability, humility, courage, enthusiasm, commitment, etc... they are what draw impressionable young people looking for role models to people living out those traits in their daily lives. This book is great reinforcement and a quick, handy reminder (for those of us who need frequent reminding) that proclaiming to be a Christian means following Jesus' example - and this is what it looks like.

Canales,D.Min., Associate Professor A nice little exposition about Jesus of Nazareth, but with a contemporary "twist" to engage and empower adolescents. It is a good book for any youth minister or high school theology/religion teacher to read and implement into their curriculum. The book does an excellent job of presenting the various attributes of Jesus of Nazareth as an approachable historical and present-day person. I think this book could be best used in various settings and programs within a comprehensive youth ministry: as a supplement to a Bible study, as part of a Christology curriculum, and a way to introduce early adolescent to the person of Jesus. One of the advantages of integrating Denton's work into young people's lives is to discuss the questions at the end of each chapter. I enjoyed this book quite a bit.
