By Amazon Customer The only reason I purchased this book, was to read the short story by Bentley Little, who even outshines Stephen King at times with his short stories. Usually, I prefer to read full length novels, finding short stories unsatisfying due to not being able to lose myself in the story. But Bentley Little is a genius, and anything he writes is awesome. His short story alone is worth purchasing this collection.

Rogers I purchased this anthology so I could read the short novella by Mick Garris, "Everything You've Always Wanted." There are other stories in this collection by Kealan Patrick Burke, Bentley Little, Julie Kenner, and Del James. These are all excellent writers, but it was Mick Garris' story that I wanted to read. Maybe I even needed it to read. You could actually say I'm addicted to his fiction, which generally mixes the reality of Hollywood with stark horror or in-your-face crime noir. When I read one of his stories, I'm never disappointed. It's fuel until the fix becomes available!Such is the case with his newest one, "Everything You've Always Wanted."This is the story of Jack Tarrington, who directed two horror films over twenty-five years ago: Taxed & Gigantic. His first feature, Taxed, was done as a low budget, independent film, but made millions at the Box Office. His second feature, Gigantic, was financed by a Hollywood studio and tanked for various reasons. Jack, however, is still remembered for his one success, Taxed, and is occasionally invited to conventions to speak about the movie. This time the invitation comes from a convention being held in Indianapolis. Now, Indiana is certainly better than Ohio; but still, who in their right ever goes there? Here, as Jack quickly finds out, he's treated like royalty...like a king, and it makes him feel proud of himself and his accomplishment.Jack even manages to hook up with beautiful, but deadly Goth chick, who may be more than she appears. She talks him to watching her own self-made film on DVD as an excuse to get into his room. After the film has been viewed by them (and it may deal with the reality of death in more ways than it seems), she spends the night with Jack. They have the most passionate, memorable sex ever experienced by the one-time director. Unfortunately for Jack, it's now time to pay the piper, and the payment will be worse than even he could ever imagine.Mick Garris has a background as a film director, a writer of screenplays, and a producer. What few of his legion of fans appear to know is that he's also an extremely gifted writer of horror fiction. His works during the past several years include My Life in the Cinema, Development Hell, Tyler's Third Act, Snow Shadows, and his most recent, Salome. Most depict the dark side of the entertainment industry with a touch of horror thrown in. There's no way you can come away from one of his pieces of fiction and not feel cut to the marrow by the razor-sharp edge of his fabulous words. Mr. Garris is definitely a master of the written word, and his stories are beautifully written, delving into the dark side of humanity. For me, it's almost like reading poetry. There is much here that a novice writer can take away as a learning experience, if he pays attention. You definitely won't go wrong by giving the fiction of Mick Garris a read, but be prepared to take a long, hot shower afterwards to wash away the dread that always seems to catch you unaware within its tight, unforgiving grip. Like Jack Tarrington, you won't feel clean until you've washed away the gore and blood.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A compilation of horror. By Carolyn Hertz Dark Screams: Volume Five, from Brian James Freeman and Richard Chizmar with Mick Garris, J. Kenner, Kealan Patrick Burke, Del James, and Bentley Little bring horror to life. This is a five star anthology of stories that kept my attention.Included in this frightening volume:Everything You've Always Wanted by Mick Garris was a truly horrible story. He's being feted for the anniversary of the one film he made. He's in a hotel suite in Indianapolis. He showers & looks in the mirror at his naked body. "That stomach: How & when did it grow like this? It was like some kind of flesh luggage."Later he meets the former star of a different older movie. "This creature was obviously female, as she had enormous round breasts climbing out of a scanty silk-and-sequin peekaboo gown that revealed more than anyone would want to see of her. Her arms crinkled like crepe-paper gift wrap when they bent, at odds with the smooth immobile skin of her face & breasts....She was quite monstrously sexualized in her presentation, but about as desirable as a camel in a skirt."The One & Only by J. Kenner was a haunting tale that took place in New Orleans, a voodoo capital. "But when he looked at her--when he got lost in the hot ice of her eyes--he knew that she was right. That she was his future, his past, his present."The Land of Sunshine by Kealan Patrick Burke had a mute wife & a troubled husband tortured by her silence. ..."though it had never bothered him before, her muteness now more than ever seemed like an infirmity destined to compound the inevitability of their dissolution."Mechanical Gratitude by Del James will do anything to protect his '68 Camaro & does just that. "It took corners like a shark cruising on asphalt."The Playhouse by Bentley Little was a haunting little tale about a real estate agent who makes life changes by visiting a playhouse on a property she's listing. "Wait a minute, she thought. Mud? Lois frowned. The property had been foreclosed on close to two months ago. It was summer. The mixture of dirt & water should have long since dried out."I would like to thank Random House Publishing Group - Hydra & NetGalley for a complimentary kindle copy of this book. It did not change my opinion for this review.Link to purchase: Dark Screams: Volume Five
