I enjoy a good urban fantasy especially when there are no explicit sex scenes to detract from an otherwise good story line. I liked the idea of a vampire hunter, who is also a vampire herself (ala Selene from "Underworld"), joining forces with an ace reporter. This had a nice balance of characters where each main protagonist strive to achieve a goal for their own personal reasons. The story line itself was enjoyable with a nice twist of conspiracy, betrayal, and subterfuge. I found the overall story arch to be well done for the most part, enough so that I may pursue the series.Cons: Two main protagonists written by two authors in first-person. I found this to be exceedingly confusing, especially if I had to put the book down in the middle of a chapter. On more than one occasion I had to stop, back up, and figure out who the "I" was that was telling the story. This is really noticeable early on before the two meet up. This style can work and has done so in books such as the old "Thieves World" series, but then again, that particular series closed out one story before starting another so you always knew who was telling their tale. A couple of instances where a particular scene just 'stopped' while the characters moved on. Coming out of a building with people firing at them.. so they hop in a car and calmly drive off.. no chase, no rounds impacting the car.. just *poof* scene closed. A bit of bad weapon terminology.. Safeties are 'engaged', 'disengaged', 'toggled' "taken off / put (the weapon ) on" safe, etc. but not 'switched" or "turned" off like a light switch. Semantics I know, but as someone who is very familiar with firearms, that drove me nuts. (I'll admit, I'm nitnoid about some things.) There was also a bit of inconsistency. Does Lea carry a 'stake' or a knife in her boots? It's termed a 'stake' but she slices with it at least once as if it had an edge. A bit of description of some of her specialized gear may help minimize confusion.Overall, not a bad read and has the potential for a really nice story line.

So far I have not yet read anything of Denise Grover Swank but I do now intend to rectify that based on this book. I was very curious how this book would read, being written by 2 authors, each with a character in alternating chapters, but I truly felt it was seamless. There was a flow and consistency that did not make me feel I was reading 2 separate stories. What I did really like is that this book featured 2 very different female characters. Often in a story we get the main character and her side kicks, this put them on a very even footing, a unique feature to a book. Lea and Rachel were fabulous and each brought something different to the table and I hugely enjoyed this. To have one character an old vampire and the other just finding out the existence of the supernatural was a really fun way os seeing the story. The only downside that I can think of is that the background needed a little more fleshing out, but I am left wanting more which is better than the info dump trap that some first books fall into, which this did not.The story was fast paced and I had to carry it round the house with me as I was anxious to see how things were going. A little like Rachel, at one point in the story I had no idea who to believe or what was really going on. What made this story quite so eery was the fact that if things really did go bump in the night you can bet the government would have a secret facility for it and I am really wanting to know where things lead after this book with how the story played out. I am looking forward to more of this world, finding out how it works and what the rules of the vampires are and what other supernatural creatures there might be. But most of all I look forward to meeting Rachel and Lea again, they were kick ass and memorable and made a fabulous team.

By Amazon Customer I have been really impressed with the duo writing team of Shannon Mayer and Denise Grover Swank. I am a religious cult follower of all things Shannon Mayer and I have been impatiently waiting for DGS to please, please release book 4 of The Curse Keepers.I do think that Shannon's writing style is definitely edgier than DGS and depending on the reader, this will either please them or turn them off. I however love edgy, smart-assy, kick ass lady heroine's so I was just thrilled with this new series. In recombinant we follow bad-ass Vampire Hunter, Lea. Lea has been a vampire/vampire hunter for the last several hundred years. Lea was trained as a vampire hunter by Catholic priests and since being turned against her will, she has promised to destroy every last one of them. I was honestly pretty disappointed with Lea's take on her own kind. She has never once tried talking to any other vampire to determine if they are good or bad, it's just wham, bam, Stake you ma'am. There are a few hints in the book that Lea is starting to question her kill first and never question later philosophy and she starts to realize that the vampire world is much larger and more organized than she first thought. I was really confused how she had never once talked to another vampire to see if they were good or bad before and that she had no idea that the vampires even had a ruling council. After several hundred years of hunting vampires, how has the vampire council not attempted to talk to her or take her out? Despite these issues, I thought Lea was a very well-written, kick-ass lady and I can't wait to read more about her. I shamelessly admit I am really glad her previous sidekick will not be joining us in book 2, I really disliked him and have no idea how or why she stuck with him for the last 50 years.Rachel is a reporter who is investigating a string of really strange murders when all of a sudden she runs into her ex-best friend (who is still in love with her) and her ex-boyfriend all in the same night and both are somehow connected to the murders she is investigating. Rachel is not quite as edgy or as potty-mouthed as Lea, but she is really brave and loyal and that loyalty is constantly putting her in danger.I'm not going to give away any more than that because, "spoilers!" (must read in Riversong voice, btw). Just trust that this a really well-written and interesting new take within the vampire genre. Each chapter switches perspective between the two characters and is really seamlessly written. If we were not told that the book was written by two authors, I don't think anyone could have possibly guessed it. Truly a powerhouse duo that I cannot wait to read more from. I am hoping that Shannon's writing style will rub off more on DGW and that her writing of Rachel will be a little edgier in the following books.I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
