Review "A page turner." - Bill Jebb

About the Author GILBERT H. MACKIN is a master of word craft with a profound knowledge of the sea, salted by many years off shore. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean twice as a researcher on board an oceanographic research ship. For five years, the author honed his skills as a writer while living on a fifty-foot ketch on San Francisco Bay; then he single-handed along the Pacific Coast to the Puget Sound in Seattle. Later, he sailed south to sunny San Diego. Born in New England, the writer earned his living for a time on a commercial fishing boat. During the Vietnam War, he served on active duty in the Pacific in the US Navy on ships of the “Alligator” or “Brown Water Navy,” part of the Seventh Fleet. He was a Frogman in UDT-11, a precursor to the Navy SEALs. His expertise in amphibious warfare and his personal experience on ships shines through in the chapters of this novel that are set in the Mexican-American War. The writer holds a doctorate from the University of California and bachelor degree from Trinity College, Hartford. He previously published Zen for a Frogman, Other Tales and Poems. His other work includes Sons of Marbert, an unpublished three act play, short stories and poems. When not writing, Gilbert sails his sloop Trinket with one of his two sons on the Chesapeake Bay.

By Archibald M Gallup As someone who has sailed my whole life, and spent a career in the military, I found this book fascinating in the detailed description of a pivotal period in the history of the United States. The two protagonists are followed through their development growing up during the tumultuous period that encompassed the war with Mexico and the evolution of the clipper and steam powered ships. The action is fast paced and the descriptions of places and events are accurate and detailed. The Naval involvement in the Army's landings in Mexico was extremely well done, with a wealth of detail on an important military action that is glossed over in most histories. The development of the clipper ship as a response to volatile commodity markets and the California gold rush was extremely well done, with the competition between the main characters adding excitement. This book is hard to put down once you start reading.

By Mark Dishner “The Great Clipper Ship Gamble,” is a story of two boys that grow up together, go to sea, and compete in business, as well as for the hand of a girl. The novel is a page turner as has been mentioned by other reviewers, and is certainly worth one’s time reading. The novel is set is the mid-1800’s and is historically accurate. This period of American history isn’t well covered and it is truly refreshing to have new ground to enjoy. Also, the writing is descriptive and the characters have a depth that transports the reader into the story.Perhaps the best part of the novel is that the author is not afraid to break convention with a lot of novels – expect some surprises! This kind of writing is bold and most books aren’t brave enough to break new ground.

The Great Clipper Ship Gamble gave me extraordinary insight into the world of commercial and military sailing in early 19th century America. The settings were meticulously accurate and detailed, and I felt I was getting the double benefit of a great story and some real historical perspective. The story is really about two young men growing up in that era and the impact on their lives of tall ships and those who crewed them and lived their lives on them. Tall ships are gone, now, but here for a few hours I was able to be there and share the remarkable experience of a race around the Horn. A great read.
