Peter Rhea Jones has spent the majority of his career studying and teaching the parables. Studying the Parables of Jesus is a primer on the historical and literary approaches to biblical study. It informs and inspires in dialogue with contemporary methods and contemporary meanings. It provides an introduction to the methods of interpretation of the parables as well as an opening chapter on the recent history of interpretation. The chapters of exegesis approach a select group of parables for a more intensive analysis. While reserving much of the technical details for the endnotes, the text includes discussion of critical issues and alternative opinions. Questions and exercises are appended at the close of each chapter for personal use or classroom discussion.

In twenty years as pastor, Peter Rhea Jones has honed and enriched the scholarly craft he brought with him as a former seminary professor of New Testament. Marked by a rare blend of sterling scholarship and pastoral insight, Studying the Parables of Jesus is an excellent book, freeing the parables from stifling familiarity to challenge our pretensions, subvert our comfortably settled opinions, and goad our religious imagination on matters of life and faith and the kingdom of God. The book is also a lucid primer on historical and literary approaches to biblical study. I intend to make extensive use of it in my Introduction to Biblical Literature course.""-John C. Shelly, Furman University

"I am happy to endorse this fine volume by Jones. He is a great pastor and a fine scholar. His insights into the parables of Jesus are not only excellent, but his life application of the lessons to be discerned from the parables is rooted in the contemporary challenges facing the Christian church and Christians. I commend it to you with genuine enthusiasm." - W. Frank Harrington, Peachtree Presbyterian Church

"Jones is not only at home in both the academy and the church but in this volume helps each to appreciate the other. He guides the reader through the best available literature on his subject but always in the service of the biblical text. Discoveries are made in the biblical text not as an intellectual game but in the mutual nourishment of faith and understanding. In other words, Dr. Jones writes so as to set the parables free to do their work." -Fred D. Craddock, Emory University

Yet when the story of the modern interpretation of the parables of Jesus is followed, the result is impressive. The record is one of creative and constructive outcome in the main. There is marked sense of advance and progress in understanding from historical study to narrative art.

For nineteen centuries interpreters, with a few impressive exceptions, treated the parables as simple allegories, and their interpretations now appear farfetched. These allegorical interpreters used the parables more as an arsenal of prooftexts for current church doctrine than as a source for new insight. The next recognizes that some parables contain a subordinated allegorical dimension, but the positive contribution of recent study has definitely been to take with utter seriousness the original meaning f the parables in the historical context of the ministry of Jesus rather than to indulge in "allegory run riot." Indeed the parables in their original import are better understood today, thanks in no small measure to Joachim Jeremias, than they have been for many centuries-possibly since the first. Implicit in not a little of the critical analysis of the parables is a mildly disguised respect for the authority of the Lord's words.

By BAMA 76 This is one of two textbooks in a graduate level class, Parables of Jesus, I have been taking. The book may not be for the casual reader, but anyone who wants to learn in significant depth about Jesus' parables, it is a winner. Jones gives great historical, literary and hermeneutical detail for each of the parables presented.
