Maw Maw was my mother. My daughters, Megan and Shannon, named her Maw Maw when they were very young. My mother, Maw Maw, had a very special box in which she kept many of her favorite recipes. It was constantly in a shambles, but somehow it worked for her because she always managed to find the recipes that made our daily lives and yearly holidays so special. Now I am a grandma and my grandchildren named me YaYa. This book is for them as well as for my daughters and all the other moms of yesteryear and today, as well anyone who knows how special a family memory can be through the recipes of their loved ones. Memories that make the air in the room turn a golden color and that play sweet music from another time so endearing you find a tear on your cheek as you embrace them. It is what life is all about and what makes going back in time so worth the while. I have always felt so incredibly lucky to have the childhood and adult life that I shared with my parents for many years. I lost my mom in 1994 and my dad in 2011. Of course, I miss them every day, but part of their legacy to me, my brother, and my sister is the ability to carry on the family traditions and knowing we will all be together again someday. My parents met their senior year in high school, fell in love at first sight, and never looked back. They were a real team the way a married couple should be and they put many of us, including myself, to shame in their devotion to each other. We grew up in an era where everyone knew his or her neighbors and where you could walk or ride your bike on a sidewalk. When you were not in school, you were allowed to leave the house right after breakfast to go out and play. You only came back for meals or a snack and you went right back out and stayed out until dark. You always met with your friends to see what each other's mom was fixing for dinner that night so if your mom was fixing liver and onions you had somewhere else to go. Your mom played bridge once a month with the girls on Thursday and both your parents played couples bridge once a month on Saturdays. These gatherings were always an event. Thursdays included some kind of sweet punch, coffee in a large percolator, maybe a fancy tea drink in another percolator, fancy glass plates for dessert, and plenty of bowls of mixed nuts and chocolates on each of the bridge tables. Saturday bridge meant everyone dressed for the occasion and everyone brought a dish. The host and hostess were in charge of the main dish and the cocktails. Cocktail hour was of the utmost importance and always included some kind of special drink like a Manhattan or a Martini and no kids were ever allowed! I think you will find that many of these recipes reflect those times, although I find that many of them easily translate into today's world.
