“A propulsively well-written trio of novellas linked by a sense of loss and an inquiry into the impossible past.” —Kate ChristensenIn his three novellas, “In Short Measures,” “Strong Conspirators,” and “Sally Forth,” Michael Ruhlman delves deeply into the nuanced complexity of romantic and sexual love—and the inevitable evolution of the heart over the span of years and decades. Each novella asks questions about the nature of love in terms of loyalty and fidelity—what are one’s obligations toward one’s spouse, one’s family, and one’s heart? In the first novella, “In Short Measures,” these questions are bound up in a writer’s work and a long-ago love. In the second, “Strong Conspirators,” an unforeseen, cataclysmic event calls for responses from a husband and wife that have never been rehearsed because they have never been required nor even imagined. In “Sally Forth,” a pair of old friends is forced to explore lost youth and lost love relative to maturity, marriage, and the passage of time.Profoundly thought-provoking and satisfying, these novellas are beautifully written with plot twists from beginning to end that will captivate the reader.Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. Review "A bestselling food writer tries his hand at fiction. . . . The rarely seen but quite enjoyable novella form serves this maiden effort well." —Kirkus Reviews"Ruhlman's trio is a worthy read." —Publisher's Weekly"Ruhlman dispels the notion that novellas don’t allow for a well-developed narrative. In Short Measures is rich, textured, and carefully constructed not only for surprises, but also with a powerful love of language and description throughout." —Washington Independent Review of Books"Fans of Michael Ruhlman's nonfiction and new readers alike will marvel, as I did, at his fictional debut. Ruhlman writes with intelligence and grace about the things that matter: love and loss and redemption. This is a literary achievement of the first order." —Ann Hood, award-winning and bestselling author of The Knitting Circle"In Short Measures is a propulsively well-written trio of novellas linked by a sense of loss and an inquiry into the impossible past. Ruhlman's voice is poetic and visceral, and his characters feel both familiar and strange in the way of the best fiction. This is a richly layered book, full of surprises and pleasures." —Kate Christensen, author of The Great Man, winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction"In his fictional debut, Michael Ruhlman gives us three intriguing novellas about loss, regret, and the passage of time: how we lose each other and ourselves, and what we do when we reach the outer limits of the commitments we've made." —Lily King, bestselling and award-winning author of Euphoria"The three novellas in In Short Measures take on the joys and sorrows of romance, especially middle-aged nostalgia for the lost, seemingly perfect loves of the past. 'We can't hold feelings for this long, can we?' one character wonders. Yes, Michael Ruhlman answers, we can, and just look what it does to us." —Stewart O'Nan, author of West of Sunset

All three novellas were engaging in their own ways, but with some consistency of character and pacing that pulled them together. I especially admire the way that, in all 3 novellas, Ruhlman effectively switched between current time and flashbacks; they were very well-timed and paced."In Short Measures", the title novella, was my least favorite. In my opinion, it went on too long. Plus, the female protagonist seemed to have taken the message of "The Giving Tree" way too much to heart; her beloved did not value her the way she did him, and yet she made all kinds of sacrifices on his account. Now, this is something women are encouraged to do... but here, it's not got any irony; she's just smitten and sacrifices. Nonetheless, the pacing is good and the characters very real."Strong Conspirators" is the best here, in my opinion. It's got an edgy and plausible plot, and kept me turning the pages to find out what happens next. Again, the pacing was excellent, and the characterizations solid. In some ways it reminded me of a couple of Westlake's novels, like "The Axe" and "The Hook"- but not quite as dark- and that's a huge compliment. Very recommended!"Sally Forth" has probably more appeal to those of us who are aging than to the young'uns. Life has both satisfactions and regrets, and one does not always know everything, even about those we love. Again, the pacing is brilliant and the characters very well-drawn.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. he's a fantastic writer. And hey By Donna Schorer As a huge fan of Mr. Ruhlman's food writing, I was surprised when I discovered that he had published a work of fiction. By "surprised", I don't mean that I thought he was not capable of it - on the contrary, he's a fantastic writer. And hey, it worked for Bourdain, right? What surprised me was the subject matter - stories of relationships, lost loves and regrets. Really deep stuff - this isn't about roasted chicken (although roasted chicken does make a cameo appearance). Nor are these stories standard dramatic fare (it isn't chick lit).As previous reviewers have mentioned, the second story, "Strong Conspirators", is the most dynamic, in that most of the action occurs in "real time" - it's the most linear of the bunch, and definitely a page-turner. I don't want to include any "spoilers" here, so let's just say that it's the kind of story that has you living it right along with the characters, wondering what you would do in a similar situation. And it's a difficult situation, to put it mildly. There are some twists here, and an unexpected ending that left me reeling. The other two stories have similar themes, both exploring past relationships that are re-addressed. They are told through the present tense and also through flashbacks, which, instead of being confusing, gradually builds each of them into a stunning and heartbreaking conclusion. This was just so well done - the characters are all completely realistic, and the choices that they make throughout each story are completely understandable; again, you feel as if you are living it with them. Mr. Ruhlman has remarkable insight concerning human nature, and pulls no punches as to the consequences of those choices. Both of these stories have twists as well - you won't see them coming, believe me. You may, however, be left with an awareness that you may not have previously had - and this is what Mr. Ruhlman has always done well in non-fiction. He makes us aware.Highly recommended reading.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Brave and poignant! By Sandra Bergsten Hauntingly beautiful and emotionally turbulent. Ruhlman delves into the complex psyche of relationships. His voice resonates as he explores the complex attachments his characters have to one another and to each of their pasts. Moving deftly from the interpersonal to the introspective, the pages of these three novellas read at times like a suspense thriller. Each story has twists that cannot be forecasted. Poignantly and painfully he writes of love, loss and salvation. Each novella contains a heartbreak that is palpable. Moving from those first true loves in college, to the hopeful commitments of matrimony, the complacency of the mature relationship, and the heart stopping spark when love seems to once again light and enliven even the weary and middle aged. “In Short Measures”, “Strong Conspirators” and “Sally Forth” are beautifully crafted and once read will echo and reverberate. For Ruhlman weaves a web that ensnares us, as readers, in front of own mirrors. Leaving us to examine the pieces and fragments of our own lives, the choices we've made, and the dark dreams that we don't dare share.
