5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A very well written urban fantasy that remains entertaining while bordering on the profound. By Underdog I don't usually bother to post a review on a book that already has more than ten reviews. In general, it seems like a waste of time because few people are likely to ever wade through all of the other reviews to get to mine. I am, however, making an exception here. This book managed to catch my attention and to hold it. It remained interesting and, at times, bordered on the profound without being overbearing.This is a coming of age story, a story of redemption, and a story of magic, wonder, and even evil. The protagonist is a sixteen year old boy. His three friends also feature prominently in the book so the reader should be aware that there are occasional moments of teenage angst and romance. Those elements were relatively rare and did not overwhelm the story line. In my opinion, they added a nice dose of reality to the story.My major fear for this series is that I can see how it would be easy for the books to degenerate into pale imitations of Harry Potter if the author doesn't keep his eyes wide open and a deft grip on the plot line. For now, however, I congratulate the author for writing a fine book.I also congratulate the author on managing to avoid the spelling and grammar errors that are so prevalent among e-books.

By WS A four instead of a five because it didn't hold me as riveted as the first books in the series did, and because after bringing it to a satisfying close, the author drags on through another chapter or so of unnecessary feel-good stuff. But I love this author, and will be watching for his next one. Chance is a great character. Can't wait to see him grow up a bit. He'll be awesome as an adult character.

Watching Chance and his reactions to situations is like watching what a young Harry Dresden might have done. I can't wait for the next adventure!
