About the Author A native of Alabama, Tasia Malakasis has had a varied career path that ultimately brought her back to the South. After a 15 year career in the high-tech industry in New York City, her passion for food led to her acquiring a degree from the Culinary Institute of America. The book is a mix between time of day eating (breakfast) and event eating (A Nibble Here and There). I have tried about 15 of the recipes in the book from entree to side to salad dressing. All were okay. Nothing sensational. Nothing awful. Just middle of the road. It's a very southern - but fresher/healthier/newer southern - approach, so no heavy biscuits, gravy or casseroles. Most recipes are relatively simple. I did like the menu approach to show what to serve together if one is/was entertaining. The photography is very nice. Quite a few drink recipes, which I like. Her narrative pages are good reads. I will try more recipes from this book. If you are a person who likes 10 cookbooks or less in your library, this is not one of them. But, it's a good option, especially for summer recipes, if you have about 100 cookbooks like I do.

Simple Yet Elegant By Becky Fields I bought the book because last year my family and I were traveling through northern Alabama and stopped by the Belle Chevre creamery. We got a tour and one thing the tour guide started to talk about was how prepared food takes on the emotions of the maker. The owner, Tasia, walked by and continued on the theme, saying that her cheese is so good because her place is full of happy people. She said more stuff about families cooking meals together, but by that time I had just about stopped listening. My husband had zoned out too.But my teenage daughter hadn't. She wanted a copy of Tasia's first cookbook so we bought it. A few days later we made a meal together, at my daughter's request, from the book - no TV, no phones allowed - and we all loved it. Was it the recipes? Was it that we had made it together without any outside distractions? A combination of the two, perhaps. We did it one or two more times, but then life got in the way.We haven't made anything from this book yet, but when I saw it was out it was a reminder of what we should have continued doing. It is beautifully photographed, and the recipes look straightforward yet elegant. It has a bit more narrative than a traditional cookbook. There are a number of drink recipes (that makes my husband pay attention), and full meal plans that we are going to dig into. My favorite part after an initial flip-through are the tips, on cooking, entertaining, and food shopping. It is as much a lifestyle book as a cookbook.

The recipes are easy to follow and turn out great every time - and I have made quite a few of them already. And the recipes seem very healthy (which can be a challenge for us who like our traditional Southern food). This also makes a great gift.
