Shotgun Rider:Restoring Your Passion for the Ministry Trail is about thriving in ministry, no matter your position. It's about being at peace in the second seat . . . or the forty-second. Though the ministry ride usually begins with a spiritual and emotional high, riders soon discover there are valleys as well. With an honest and sometimes raw look into the state of ministry life, Pastor K. Douglas Brown helps riders find their way back, guiding them in rediscovering a love and passion for the ride.  Chock full of how-to advice for handling conflict―from the seemingly smallest concerns to the greatest issues of staff and church division. With keen insight, Brown shows how to invite God's heart into conflict, challenging riders to own the Great Commission as their goal, and compels them to the task of shepherding followers, with an impassioned plea to lead them, love them, and build them. The Grand Prize winner of Deep River Books ' 2014 writer's contest, Shotgun Rider is for anyone in ministry who is not in the driver's seat; a valuable resource for churches and individuals.

Shotgun Rider: Restoring Passion for the Ministry Trail, by K. Douglas Brown

Review "For over forty years, I have been a Shotgun Rider, that is, an associate pastor working alongside the Senior Pastor. There are thousands of Shotgun Riders, serving in churches around the world.  They bear different labels, but they are not the Senior Leader; they don’t make the final decisions. I have never read anything more helpful than Doug Brown’s book, Shotgun Rider: Restoring Your Passion for the Ministry Trail. It is written specifically to pastoral leaders who are on the team, but are not Senior Pastors. I highly recommend it."  -Gary Chapman, PhD, author of The Five Love Languages “A must-read book for anyone working on staff in ministry. Shotgun Rider will challenge you to embrace the significance of your role and keep your heart in the right place in spite of your circumstances. A much-needed book, written by someone who has succeeded at living out these principles.” -Mark Jobe, lead pastor of New Life Community Church, Chicago; author of Unstuck: Out of Your Cave into Your Call "Shotgun Rider packs a big punch! Crammed full of great stories, insight, and wisdom that will benefit veteran and rookie ministry workers alike. I found myself re-reading most sections because they are all packed with so much good stuff. Share the word; Shotgun Rider is a GREAT read!"  -Kurt Johnston, Pastor to Students, Saddleback Church

Bengtson Doug Brown targets his book 'Shotgun Rider' at those in ministry, but it's treatise on leading others in grace and love. At one point he states, "What I'm talking about is standing in the gap where you're needed and honoring God by providing godly leadership without expectation." He shows us the principles this is founded on, and lifts the hood on HOW to do this with hard won practical advice and liberally sprinkled anecdotes from his own time in ministry. A pithy volume that will be instantly useful to any leader.

" I found it as much about good leadership as ministry By Loren Reno The subtitle of this very enjoyable read is "Restoring your passion for the ministry Trail." I found it as much about good leadership as ministry, but they are so similar. Doug writes, "If there is one thing that people want, it's to be led." This is true of servants and leaders alike. Again, he writes, "Lead your leaders, and those you are serving, by loving them." Not many think about leading up the chain. Then, "Lead others by building into them." This is so practical and helpful...and written with experience and humility. Doug writes about loving God and others way before loving self. His style of leadership in a different ministry than where the Lord has called me is inspiring and so applicable. If "read to lead" hearkens to you, you'll want to get a copy of this. Expect to come back for more for gifts. 5-stars!
