30 of 35 people found the following review helpful. A Thoroughly Mixed Bag By Jeremiah I purchased this Psalter as a gift for a friend who said they "REALLY REALLY" wanted it. As an Orthodox Christian, the Psalter is a book that is close to my heart and the basis of many of our church services. I spent some time reviewing this translation because I'd never heard of Brian Simmons or his new product.Firstly, as the product description says, this translation is a dynamic equivalent. In a nutshell, there are two extreme forms of translating the Bible, one is literal (KJV, RSV, ASV, etc) in which they seek to translate from the original language word for word. On the opposite end of the spectrum you have idiomatic, aka dynamic equivalent (The Message, New Living Translation, etc) which attempts to translate "thought for thought." Some translators try to aim for somewhere in the middle, which the old NIV did.I will state my slight biases upfront: I appreciate the more literal translations most of the time. I also prefer the Psalter from the LXX (Septuagint), while this translation appears to rely mostly on the Masoretic text.With every dynamic equivalent translation you run into one big problem: the line between scripture and commentary inevitably gets blurred because you are reading someone's translation of the original text as well as their interpretation of the meaning of that text.I found that to be the case with Mr. Simmons translation in several areas. An example is Psalm 91. Verses five and six in the ESV say,You will not fear the terror of the night,nor the arrow that flies by day,nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.Mr. Simmons in the Passions Psalms translates and interprets the meaning of it as follows:You will never worry about an attack of demonic forces at night,Nor have to fear a spirit of darkness coming against you.Don't fear a thing! Whether by night or by day,Demonic danger will not trouble you,Nor the powers of evil launched against you.For God will keep you safe and secure; they won't lay a hand on you!Firstly, I appreciate the fact that he brought out that this passage can largely refer to demonic attack. This is how Christians throughout the ages have understood it.However, where I differ with him is that the Bible actually says that we have no reason to fear demonic attack, not that the attack won't come, which seems to be what Mr. Simmons is implying. Nearly every Christian who is attempting to live a God-pleasing life realizes that God allows a certain degree of demonic warfare to challenge us and make us grow along the way. In fact, Christians throughout the ages have said that if one is not seeing some level of opposition in their lives then it could be a sign that they have strayed off of the "straight and narrow."Bottom line: There are many passages that Mr. Simmons translates and interprets beautifully, bringing the text a fresh new approach while maintaining the original intent of the passage. If you are intimately familiar with the Psalms and are looking for a fresh approach to help you read it more attentively for a season, this may help. However, there are too many areas for my liking where he writes something that is too "rosy" or he simply takes some generous liberties and crosses the line between translating and providing commentary.The psalter that I use is called A Psalter for Prayer: An Adaptation of the Classic Miles Coverdale Translation which is beautifully formatted, very large print, and uses formal language "Thou," "Thee," etc.

New Depth to The Psalms By Mary Lou's Reviews The Passion Translation is a new translation that includes the Aramaic, Greek and Hebrew underpinnings of each word and phrase in the Scripture. The Psalms are called Poetry on Fire, and it is an apt title. The Passion Translation uses more expressive language than the historical translations (NIV, ASV, etc.), or the NLT. It uses more imagery and analogies that provide new depth in contemplation and meditation. This language and use of imagery make it easier to hold on to the truths in the Scripture and to unpack the deeper levels in these words. There’s also more focus on one’s personal relationship with God and its implications. My review from the Passion Translation is from a devotional perspective for those who read the Bible to draw closer to God. From that perspective, it’s a must read!
