9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A story of perseverance and heartbreak By KimNY In the end, I really enjoyed this story, translated from the Spanish. Intially, I found it sort of slow going and struggled a bit throughout with the tendency to explain things to the reader rather than to show through dialogue. I am not sure if this is attributable to writing style or to translation. In any event, as I became more used to this writing, it troubled me less and less because at the heart of this book is a story of a love that would not die. In many ways Rebecca has lived a charmed life in Barcelona, attending university, traveling, spending time with siblings she clearly adores and a wonderful father. Her mother is a more troubling issue. The mother seems quite constrained by societal and religious expectations and has put these expectations on Rebecca, who is set to marry a man eleven years her senior who is a partner in her father’s law firm. So strong are the expectations placed on her that Rebecca herself is unsure of whether she truly loves Mario or not, though she begins to feel niggling doubts. She takes a summer trip with two girlfriends – the thoughtful and quietly strong Berta and the headstrong, liberated, impulsive Lola – to Scotland. Lola orchestrates the trip so that she can reconnect with a former lover. A small town in Scotland proves eye opening to Rebecca, particularly when she meets Kenzie, a tattooed musician and mechanic in whom still waters run deep. They embark on a whirlwind romance until reality comes crashing back. The last third or so of the book deals with the aftermath of this affair for Kenzie and Rebecca as well as the changing lives of their friends. This book is by no means a quick resolution to a happily ever after – many years pass before Rebecca and Kenzie confront the implications of Rebecca’s decision to return home to marry Mario and decisions they both later make in their lives. The story was intense, fulfilling and heartbreaking at times. Ultimately the conclusion is satisfying but it was an emotional tumult getting there.I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I can relate with Rebecca in a way because I had a Mother like that and Spanish families are exactly like the book describes, it is comforting but also very annoying. In the story the love they feel for each other is just so beautiful and I could totally feel the way the writer describes the wedding ... it was incredible.... Please write more books like this.

To fine your one love and not to be with that in the moment, I feel everyone has been there. Maturity and life all play a part in this. And the forceful family member behind everyone is here. A read that stayed with me for a long time.
