By JS-P Blessings for my Grandchild is a beautiful and thoughtful book intended to be given by a grandparent to his/her grandchild and personalized, not only by writing the child’s name into prayers or by signing it as a gift, but there is also room to add a personal, spiritual family history, and to tell the story of how they kept their faith and how God answered their prayers. This book is written from the heart. It is Trinitarian in the sense that marriage is Trinitarian as it explores the relation of the grandparent with God, the grandchild with God and the grandchild with grandparent so that each relationship can merge into one deep Love. It opens with the wisdom of a grandparent looking upon the principals by which one should live, the personal imperfections and repentances that mark life and God’s great mercy. This is followed by a prayer for the grandchild. After this, the grandparent explains our faith in very simple and straightforward terms, laying the foundation for a child’s growth over time. Each page or set of facing pages is a “chapter” often with a biblical quote or citation. Each chapter sets the stage for the grandparent/reader to share and elaborate with a child, such as “How to Listen to God’s Word” or “Be a Doer.” And, as every teacher knows, one comes to know one’s own faith better by explaining it. Last, as the back cover explains, this book is “a quest to leave a tangible affirmation to my grandchildren…of the depth of our family’s faith and trust in Jesus Christ, so that the truth of the Eastern Orthodox faith is preserved in their lives. It is intended to create a connection, “a remembrance of our love and Christ’s love for them, especially when we are part of the Church Triumphant.”
