This interactive study book is designed to provide practical, biblical wisdom that can be applied immediately, and meaningfully passed on from one man to another through discipleship, mentoring, and most importantly, fatherhood. Designed for individual use or within a small group, the goal of this book is to provide interactive practical guidance for everyday life rooted in the classic virtues. So why should you care about the virtues as a man? Do carelessness, fear, gluttony, injustice, uncertainty, despair, and indifference sound like a summary of what plaques the modern male? The virtues are nothing new, in fact, these 7 virtues and associated properties or sub-virtues not only trace back to the Bible, but to Aristotle, and Plato. The four cardinal virtues of prudence, fortitude, justice, and temperance are part of natural law and written on the heart of every man, whereas the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity are infused by the Holy Spirit into the heart of every disciple of Christ. The theological virtues give the cardinal virtues power as faith provides men the motivation, charity the implementation, and hope the destination. Man’s Ultimate Challenge will equip you to live as men of: (1) FORTITUDE and not FEAR; (2) PRUDENCE and not CARELESSNESS; (3) TEMPERANCE and not GLUTTONY; (4) JUSTICE and not INJUSTICE; (5) FAITH and not UNCERTAINTY; (6) HOPE and not DESPAIR; (7) CHARITY and not INDIFFERENCE. This book is interactive in that throughout the book you will have opportunities to engage with the text through diagnostic questions, study, memory tables, and even Internet research. At the end I hope that you feel equipped, challenged and encouraged to be the man God called you to be.

Review "Pete has resurrected a simple truth, "You can't become a Godly man without becoming a man of virtue." I have worked with young men for the last forty-five years. During that time I prayed for a book that would help define what it means to be a man of virtue. This book goes a long way toward filling that void. Every chapter will cause a thinking man to stop and ask himself, "Is this true of me?" Every man seeking to live a Godly life needs to give it a careful read."Timothy C. Tatum, EdDChaplain (Colonel), US Army Retired Pete Lackey delivers a powerful and convicting story line of unchanging principles that endure every level of scrutiny. His book interviews the soul and either unsettles our conclusions or affirms lifestyle decisions. This book speaks to us like an interactive GPS coaching us to that destination with our true self--our soul-- and equips us to answer the question: Are we connected or disconnected with God? The journey is narrated with the literary voice of Proverbs-the original sound bites of life- and holds the course perfectly. Mike Hoyt, Chaplain (Colonel), US Army Retired
From the Author Are you ready to take your small group to the next level? This book is theologically rich, apologetically rooted, yet incredibly practical. Why is this book needed? We have unintentionally changed Christianity into a message of "don't" for men and we wonder why we are not growing. The "don't" message that we get at most men events sadly causes us to focus on the flesh which in turn makes you a slave! Romans 8:6 clearly tells us that "For the mind set on the flesh is death" so why would we leave a men's event encouraged by a message of "don't" that places our mind's focus on the flesh? God calls us to be FREE and in our freedom we are called to be men of action who "do!" "Do" activates the Spirit of God and makes freedom in Christ a reality! Christianity is not a religion of "don't" but a redeemed life of "do!" On the other hand, without any tangible target at which to aim, we end up wandering in the dry desert paralyzed by a half message of "don't." As we know all to well, merely a focus on "don't" creates in us a self-fulfilling prophecy of a life of defeat. So, instead of forward progress toward an objective, we settle in place making the chains of slavery more comfortable. Men, we have to move forward away from "don't" in regards to the vices in our life and direct our focus ahead at the virtues of "do." "Do" gives us a real purpose, and having a tangible objective activates that wondrous sense of duty that have motivated all great men throughout history. The virtues are the "do" and this book is your guide. In addition, listed are the top 10 popular Christian myths busted in this book:Myth #1: "The Bible says do not judge"Myth #2: "Faith is subjective & separate from reason"Myth #3: "Sin is sin!"Myth #4: "Anger is bad"Myth #5: "Christianity is simply being nice"Myth #6: "God is sexual prude & a cosmic kill joy"Myth #7: "A Christian who sinned is a hypocrite & this proves Christianity is wrong"Myth #8: "Drinking alcohol is sin"Myth #9: "Forgiveness & reconciliation are the same"Myth #10: "A Christian should never take medication for mental illness"
About the Author Since accepting Christ in 1995, Pete Lackey has dedicated his life answering questions that serve as true barriers to the knowledge of Jesus Christ. He has built an impressive research library over the years to equip himself and others with topics spanning philosophy, science, various world religions, and the mysterious worlds of the cult and the occult. His specific specialty is comparing and contrasting different belief systems with the Christian worldview in order to demonstrate why Christianity is true. Pete has taught on these topics in numerous venues around the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Pete attended Southern Evangelical Seminary and served on staff at McLean Bible Church for seven years as the Director of Marriage & Family and as the Director of Preparing for Marriage where he taught with his wife of over 18 years. Both he and his wife as adult children of divorced parents bring a unique passion and perspective on the importance of a strong marriage built around a Christian worldview. Pete has been part of the McLean Bible Church family for over 18 years and has earned the reputation as the man to come to when it comes to questions of the faith. With his library, passion, and experience answering questions, he will either have the answer or know where to go to get the answer to your questions. Moreover, he skillfully knows how to get to the real question behind the question. Pete believes that only the Christian worldview provides truly satisfying answers to the deep questions of every human heart; questions of origins, meaning, destiny, and purpose. Pete Lackey is the Founder of "Man's Ultimate Challenge" a ministry that equips Fathers with a powerful up-to-date "rite-of-passage" tool to strategically call his son into authentic manhood. First, it was a book that had a basis in the author's challenge to his son. I have no son, so I wondered about its applicability to me and my daughters. Second, the name of the book gave me pause as the VERY last thing I need is something else on my plate for me to deal with or worse case....fail at.... challenge NOT accepted! I can state that both these hesitations were not an issue!I divided the book into two sections, the positive and my preferences. There really were no negatives, so the things that I disliked or rubbed me the wrong way were more preferences than outright things wrong with the book. For example, the author had the Introduction which talks about the ceremony in the very front of the book, where my preference for that would be at the end. Not a biggie. I keep my books for a long time, and not just that but also go back and re-read them. The one thing that strikes me in books that are dated is their references to things that are historical that many/most people would not get. I was reading a book the other day and they talked about Listservers. Unless you were on the internet in the early years, this would be meaningless. For that reason, I found the author's references to things like kindles, Michael Jackson, and on pg 58 the comment "this past summer" to be relevant in this time and place but would date the book prematurely. Again, all preferences....I like red and you like green. For the positives, the book was outstanding. Nothing frustrates me more than books giving direction or encouragement with no examples or real world applicability. The author was able to weave biblical truths with real-world examples which gave you a means to understand what was meant. I've also read books where there is page after page of scripture without the author tying in context. It felt I was reading another Bible! Not the case in this book! Some of the chapters were so deeply unpacked that I know I have to go back and read them again since I know I missed things. The chapter on Virtue and the circles of friends was incredibly insightful. The tendency to assume the negative had me questioning if that section was written just for me. One simple drawing with comments was the fence of freedom, which captured exactly the dichotomy I was trying to explain to myself. Finally, the very brief section on sex and alcohol was profound. Finally, I like how the author talked at a easy level without insinuating I was stupid. He explained things in words and often had a picture of diagram that also explained. I bought the book to learn, so I appreciate the author making sure things are explained different ways.My only complaint is I wish I could give the book 4.75 stars (my preferences have to count for something), but will round it up to 5. While I expected much less from this book, I often stopped reading to reflect on something that was written and be amazed at such insight and wisdom. I can't give this book a high enough recommendation.

Phoenix AZ This book is a great read for anyone who is looking for a Biblical framework for their lives. The author obviously put a lot of effort and great thought into it. It can be used a very effective tool for straightforward and biblically founded truthful living.

I heard Pete give a talk on the virtues within these pages and was encouraged to speak to my son about what it truly means to be a man of faith and virtue. The challenges Lackey puts forth are important to men personally, but also very helpful as we connect with our sons and helping to equip them to be strong men of character. Every man should dig into this book and then engage with their sons and other men.
