2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful, Sentimental Romantic Comedy. Great Prescription to Get Me in the Christmas Spirit. By Bill Anderson Length: Print 139 pages, Audible; not available in audiobook format. This book is targeted to people who enjoy romantic comedies and Christmas. I think this is the sort of story women will love. I, myself, probably would not have read it except that I was nostalgic for Christmas stories. In fact, one quote at the heading for December 23, grabbed me. Christmas is a time of year when you get homesick, even when you’re already home.Although the author's ownership of a Yorkshire Terrier has nothing directly to do with the story, her declaration of her love for the dog hooked me, because my wife and I also have a Yorkie, Egyptian born and raised, but his daddy was born in Britain. Okay, a flaky reason, perhaps, but it's as good as any for me to choose this story at this time of year...What was the Amazon Rank on the date this review was published? 18,284.Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first?.Yes, but to fully appreciate the nuances, it would be better to read the previous stories about Clara by this author. Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures? No, this is well edited. Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read? This is a quick, easy, leisurely read that gets the reader more in the mood for Christmas. What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made? Plain spoken English, but more in the line of that spoken by people in the UK or Australia. My biggest pleasure or disappointment was? The writer narrates the encounters of the star, Clara, in an upbeat, quick-paced style that kept me glued to the story throughout.I loved the humorous quips that set each chapter (each day). Most were laugh out loud quality.EXCERPTChristmas is cancelled. Apparently you told Santa that you had been good this year... he died laughing.December 11th‘Are you kidding?’ I cross my arms and stare at Marc in disbelief. ‘What if something gets damaged?’ I glance over at Oliver who lets out a little chuckle. ‘I’m being serious!’‘Clara, it’s a Christmas party for a bunch of thirty something women, not an all out rave in a mosh pit.’ Marc rolls his eyes as he always does when he thinks that I am being dramatic.‘Erm... thirty something?’ I raise my eyebrows accusingly. ‘I think you will find that some of us are still in our twenties.’ Smiling smugly, I flash Marc a cheeky wink.Feeling rather pleased with myself at being the baby of the group, I fold my arms and sit back in my seat. Due to the huge budget cuts this year, the Suave Christmas party is being held right here in the office. Personally, I think plying people with alcohol and festive cheer around thousands of pounds worth of office equipment is a total recipe for disaster, but what do I know? With Marc and Gina flying out to Australia on the 22nd, the party is being held on the 20th. Five days after Lianna’s birthday and five days before Christmas day. Perfect timing. Now, if I could only get my head around our parents coming to stay and transform into Nigella Lawson to cook a traditional Christmas dinner for seven hungry people, everything would be A-OK.As Marc fills Oliver in on his big Australian adventure, I try not to feel envious at him jetting off to the sun. Passport disaster aside, it sounds like they are going to have a fantastic time. It wasn’t that long ago that Oliver was pushing for us to spend this Christmas across the pond too. Being a Texas boy at heart, Oliver is used to sipping a beer in his cowboy boots and toasting marshmallows on an open fire. A little different to cradling a glass of Bailey’s and a classic mince pie. It’s not very often that the cultural differences come between us. Aside from the odd argument over him drenching my morning bacon in maple syrup, we actually get along really well.Leaving the boys to talk, I slip out of Marc’s office in search of Lianna. The entire floor is buzzing with festive cheer. Even the grumpy mail man is smiling. Noticing that her desk is empty, I am about to return to Marc’s office when I spot her pushing her way through the sea of desks with a mountain of magazines. I can tell by her red nose that it must be below freezing outside. Not surprising considering that it is almost Christmas. A quick glance out of the window confirms my suspicions. It’s not even 3.30pm and already the sky is a magical shade of black. It’s hard to believe that in six short months we will be basking in sunshine way into the evening. Shaking my head to erase the image of gin cocktails and sunburnt shoulders, I turn my attention to my best friend.London, Lacey (2015-10-16). Clara at Christmas (Clara Andrews Series - Book 4) (Kindle Locations 791-818). SSO Publishing. Kindle Edition.Bottom Line:There once was a time when I was absolutely certain you would never catch me dead reading so sentimental a story as Clara at Christmas. That was then, this is now. I very much enjoyed this quaint, Hallmark Channel style of story. I am unlikely to read any others, though, because this genre is not really my cup of tea. Despite that, this did so nourish my sentimental side that I am rating this as a five star novella. For books such as this, I am grateful Kindle Unlimited presented me the opportunity to read something I would probably never purchase.Comments?
