1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sweet and Savory, easy and original recipes By Joanne I like the simplicity of the recipes and the unusual variety. Had it not been for a lot of company I had staying this week, I would have used it by now, but I will be using it soon and report back. I just thought I'd weigh in with a few 'headlines' on this book. It has the simplest marmalade recipes I have ever seen. I have never attempted marmalades before bc quite honestly I am lazy and they are time consuming...I have too many other projects going on at the same time to deal with that. But this book will change that.There is no pectin used in her fruit preserves, which I don't particularly like myself, but others might like that. (like I said, I admit I'm trying to work smart, not hard!). She has a handful of recipes using "jamming sugar" which I had never heard of before. It supposedly helps with the jam/jelly setting altho' you can use granular sugar. I just ordered some today on Amazon. With every book I read or cooking show I view, I am always glad to learn some new tricks.Some of the more novel recipes are: Pickled Poblano Peppers, Pickled Raisins, Heartbeets, (a play on words bc red beets are shaped into hearts (w/a cookie cutter) and preserved--adorable, also. Cucumber Syrup with Mint and Lime, Raspberries in Syrup, Susie's Apple Bourbon Toddy Jelly. There are a few recipes with odd ingredients I will never be able to find yet alone make...and there are the tried and true recipes of dilly beans, dill pickles, pickled brussel sprouts, etc...There are recipes to use up yours preserves too, with an assortment of colored pictures throughout. Also some refrigerator preserves. I tried the Bananas Foster Jam and it is very good...it uses the gel sugar mentioned above. I will try the Pickled Pobano peppers soon as I just purchased the peppers today.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A DEFT HAND! By Missymaam Not only is this a beautiful book, it is entertaining too! I just made the recipe "French Revolution 1789". It is just beautiful. The kitchen is redolent of summer fruit, wine and rosewater and after the preserves are in their jars, the empty pan looks like the bucket under the guillotine. Brilliant red and beautiful! And in the winter when outside is gray and frosty I will be able to vividly remember this hot August day and how bright red-licious it was. Keep rockin' Camilla!!
