2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I would definitely recommend it By S. Gregory Annabel and her family are stuck in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. They have a plan to move to their grandfathers farm where they will be relatively safe. Their trip is harrowing and they face many horrors along the way. Annabel learns that her grandmother may have known it was coming and appear to Annabel in dreams to warn her. Using a notebook of her grandmothers and the lessons she learned from her, Annabel learns of a way to possibly cure the zombie virus.This was well written, with strong interesting characters. There were a lot of them so it was hard to keep track sometimes, but the journey was great and how they all worked together. There was a mixture of religion, ghosts and mythology in this book which worked well. I did think that some of this could have been explained a little more in depth for people who know nothing about it, but otherwise it was a great book. I would definitely recommend it.

Help from God, the end times, yeah, yeah, yeah. I waswrong. The whole wanting measure antidote was executed brilliantly.Help from God? Hardly. This was no tired rehash of the end times, noreinterpretation of biblical passages here. Help did arrive, but theblend of western and eastern beliefs obscured any obvious connectionwith God as we know it.Annabel is an unlikely heroine. Intelligent and moody her diminutivestature belies the hidden strength in her. In every way she seems illfitted for the destiny which awaits her, but Mr. Sharp manages to pullit off.I was afraid that this was going to be another bash them in the headtype zombie book. It isn’t. Yes, there are zombie encounters, a fewserious, but in the main, the books idea of blending into theenvironment so the zombies don’t take note serve the characters well.Except once, when they let their guard down. Guerilla style zombiecombat is how I’d describe it.No, this is an epic adventure filled with moments of tenderness,sadness, and more than its fair share of grief. Family, friends, love,and duty define these folks as they strive to survive and reach theirjourney’s end. The book’s end is guaranteed to bring a tear to one’seyes.Mr. Sharp excels at character development and dialogue. There were afew places where he slips into a narrative role, but they were briefand in the overall context of the book easy enough to forgive. I’mcertainly waiting for the next installment of Second Dead.

Maric ‘Second Dead’ features a feisty main character in Annabel, a 17-year-old Asian American (her mother is from Vietnam) stuck in a post-zombie-apocalypse America. She’s supported by a cast of unique and quirky secondary characters as she and her family battles thousands of zombies to reach a sanctuary identified by her father. As well as having a relentless pace and plenty of action, ‘Second Dead’ also has a touching love story and believable, often poignant interactions between the various family members. The author has obviously spent a lot of time on planning and world-building, which left me with the feeling this story is just one snippet of the world Sharp has invented – sequels to follow, I’m sure. I particularly liked the sprinklings of Vietnamese culture throughout the story, and the way the ancient wisdom of Annabel’s deceased Vietnamese grandmother proves pivotal to the plot. An exciting and original read.
