More like today than you might think By Brian C in Texas Very interesting book, and very good descriptions of how the baning system worked then - very much as now. Getting into the 19th century banking system in England is kind of difficult; there were a number of nation-wide banks, and a number of banks of issue, with no central bank monopoly - and the nomenclature of banking was different. Once the language problem is solved, though, life then begins to look very like the present.
