Rick has spent all his life under Alpha Erskine’s thumb. He was forced to become part of the man’s inner circle when his father died and to participate in things that still give him nightmares. He’s used to being shunned, beaten, and derided for his stutter, and he doesn’t think things really can change, not even with Kameron as their new alpha. Cole is part of the council, but he’s really a wandering soul. He hasn’t stopped in one place in years, but meeting his mate while visiting the Gillham pack changes that. He knows Rick hasn’t had an easy life, and he intends to make his mate happy, no matter what it takes. Rick struggles with his stutter and his past but slowly starts healing from the years of abuse. Cole is an important part of that healing, but what will happen when someone tries to take him away? Will Rick be strong enough to protect his mate, or will he lose him to greed?

This one can be read as a stand alone yet if you want more background and a deeper look at the characters, read at least Zach's story. Zach (Gilham Pack Book2)As I started the story, I was trying to place Rick. The name didn't jump at me. Then I remembered. Rick was part of Alpha Erskine’s inner circle, the alpha that Kameron defeated and killed. When Rick was introduced he wasn't as blood thirsty and mean as the other leading wolves and he was allowed to stay in the pack instead of going off to prison. I didn't get enough of a feel for him until starting this story. I pictured an older wolf for some reason. So Rick was born and raised in the Gilham Pack, under an evil alpha's rule. He was targeted by Alpha Erskine and suffered both mental and physical abuse. Not because he was gay. Simply because Rick needed 'toughening up'. Not that bullies need an excuse. I will say that this story has no torture scenes or any violence. All that is in the past. So when this story starts, it's months into Kameron's leadership and Rick is still struggling. Just because one threat is gone doesn't mean life is easier. So Cole is introduced to Rick in the first chapter. He is a bear shifter and the representative for his species on the Paranormal Council. He's used to traveling, has no family, at least those he doesn't recognize, and when meets Rick, Cole is ready to settle in one place. Cole asks Kameron for permission to settle there in his pack. Build a house. Build a life with his mate, Rick. The story is a slow gentle relationship, focusing mainly on Rick and Cole. Very few past characters are mentioned although Zach makes the most page space. The patience on Cole's part and his putting Rick's feelings before his was wonderful. Cole is not a hardcore councilman. Oh no. I assume Cole was an older bear as Rick was only 19. I have no idea what 'rank' Rick's wolf is even if his father was an alpha. I do know Rick has those fighting instincts and Cole. . . Well, Cole doesn't seem to be a bear that fights very well. Of course all that didn't matter to these two, I just had a thought about that as the story unfolded . .. And staying in pack territory. . . . . And a side note there. I wondered why Rick would want to stay with a pack that has so many bad memories.I wondered about the psychiatrist that lost his mate. . . And that lone wolf that befriended Rick. Could those two? (I kept waiting for one to smell the other on Rick or Nick . . . . ) The process for Rick to be able to talk, accept, cope, and come out stronger makes this story into a really rewarding and worthwhile read. - Dan's Wife

Book Review by Brandilyn By PrismBookAlliance 4 of 5 StarsFor original review, please visit the Prism Book Alliance® blog online. There is a definite theme to the Whitedell Pride and Gillham Pack books by Catherine Lievens. They are about fated mates who face roadblocks to their mating. Usually, one mate is all for the mating, and one is not for whatever reason. The other theme common in these two series is mates you don’t necessarily expect. In the case of Rick (Gillham Pack #5), the aforementioned roadblocks seem complicated, but boil down to one thing. Confidence. Cole has enough for both himself and Rick, but Rick has to find some of his own as well. Cole is just the.. err bear to do it.Rick and Cole make an unusual couple on the outside. However, like all the fated mate pairs in these two series, they each have something that the other needs to be complete. They complement each other. They make up for each other’s shortcomings.Rick is a character we have seen a few times in the past. We knew he had a story, but we didn’t know if we were going to love or hate him. While I will leave that up to you decide for yourself, I will say that Craig is one of my favorite characters in the Pack. You will notice that when I talk about the history of this series, I talk equally about Whitedell and Gillham. These two series are so tightly linked; I recommend reading them together. Gillham starts after Andrew of the Whitedell Pride series, and they alternate from there timeline wise. Before reading Rick, I did a complete re-read of both series. If I remember correctly, Rick introduced a new baddy for the council to hunt, since Nysys (Whitedell #13) basic put the Glass Research Lab story arc to bed.

By Heather Leonard Another awesome installment in the Whitedell Pride/Gillham Pack universe. Rick is such a sweet character, and I was so happy to see him get his HEA with Cole. As always with this series, there was the right blend of elements to bring it all together for a very enjoyable read. This one was written with more heart and less drama, though there was still more than enough action to keep you glued to the pages. Highly recommend this series and the Whitedell Pride books.
