Since the global financial crisis, government debt has soared globally by 40 percent and now exceeds an astonishing $100 trillion. Not all countries, though, have fared the same. Indeed, even prior to the financial crisis, the fiscal fates of countries have been diverging, despite predictions that pressures from economic globalization push countries toward more convergent fiscally conservative policies.

About the Author
Gene Park is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Loyola Marymount University. Dr. Park has researched and written extensively on the politics of public finance in Japan.
Eisaku Ide is Professor in the Department of Economics at Keio University. He is also affiliated with the Center for Risk Management and Safety Sciences at Yokohama National University. Dr. Ide is an expert on Japanese fiscal and financial policy.

Mainstream analysis of tough political and economic challenge By Moshe Yanovskiy (1) The choice of the issue is perfect and it is the greatest advantage of the articles' collection presented by the book; (2) Attempt of the authors and editors to write on the issue which is so "politically incorrect" in the framework of mainstream, politically correct vision of the welfare state turned to be missed opportunity to reason sound policy advice how to manage the problems risen by the authors. (3) I believe, the problem analysis would be more fruitful as long run retrospective (very long run, since 1800-ties) study to compare census (taxpayers') democracy with the modern Universal Suffrage Democracy.Conclusion: the book is a rather expensive, so it meet my expectation eventually, only because the issue is perfectly coincided with my research program. I can't recommend to buy the book if you not going to study the issue of lasting deterioration of old Democracies ability to balance the budget in depth.
