Finding triumph in tragedy By ralphcreative Well written, involving, deeply personal and moving, this books covers author David Malone's life from childhood up to the 1996 and 2000 Olympics. It chronicles his relationships with his mother, father and brother, and the tragedies that affected all of their lives...as well as his courtship and first marriage. The heartbreaking details of coping with a deep and long-lasting depression are affecting and immensely relatable. Also notable and fascinating are the accounts of his work with the Fort Worth Police - additionally intriguing to me as a long-time resident of the area. Honest and unflinching, Malone also relates his transformation from a theologically conflicted ideology to a passionate embrace of Christianity - willing to put himself on the line emotionally as much as he did personally during his years of police work. Highly recommended, this is a book you will not soon forget.

Short-listed for the Man Booker Prize

Long-listed for the National Book Award for Fiction

Brace yourself for the most astonishing, challenging, upsetting, and profoundly moving book in many a season. An epic about love and friendship in the 21st century that goes into some of the darkest places fiction has ever traveled and yet somehow, improbably, breaks through into the light.

When four classmates from a small Massachusetts college move to New York to make their way, they're broke, adrift, and buoyed only by their friendship and ambition. There is kind, handsome Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, a quick-witted, sometimes cruel Brooklyn-born painter seeking entry to the art world; Malcolm, a frustrated architect at a prominent firm; and withdrawn, brilliant, enigmatic Jude, who serves as their center of gravity. Over the decades their relationships deepen and darken, tinged by addiction, success, and pride. Yet their greatest challenge, each comes to realize, is Jude himself, by midlife a terrifyingly talented litigator yet an increasingly broken man, his mind and body scarred by an unspeakable childhood and haunted by what he fears is a degree of trauma that he'll not only be unable to overcome - but that will define his life forever.

In rich and resplendent prose, Yanagihara has fashioned a tragic and transcendent hymn to brotherly love, a masterful depiction of heartbreak, and a dark examination of the tyranny of memory and the limits of human endurance.

On one hand, it's beautifully written in many ways. On the other hand, it's a bit overblown in its writing, too. There are lovingly rendered details that create a lovely mental picture... and then the passage goes on... and on... until sometimes it devolves into lists. Lists that sometimes feel endless in their length and actually don't end up contributing much of anything to the story.I really did come to care for the characters in the book, which I think makes the book all the more cruel. I was prepared for a harrowing story. The book blurb broadcasts that loudly enough. I thought the portrayal of abuse and its consequences and the reverberations of it throughout a life were well done in many ways. The interplay between the characters and how their lives intertwine feels so real. But there is a point in the book where it all just starts to feel like tragedy porn. Tragedy porn that feels a great empathy for all those involved and is filled with well-defined characters... but tragedy porn none the less. In the end, it just feels sort of crassly manipulative... or, at least, misguided.I went from being a bit confused by the book juggling the four main characters (something that, structurally just ends up being kind of weird since two characters are basically dropped for most of the story... though I guess I understand their detailed set-up to an extent) to getting really involved in the characters we WERE following and being absorbed into the book and then, finally... almost hating the book by the end. The sorrow inflicted on the main character (and then to the characters around him) becomes, frankly, almost laughable. But not mirthful laughter. It's the sort of laughter you utter because you're not quite sure how else to react to what's being presented to you. There is a point where the movie in my mind of this book went from an artful indie film to a cheap LIfetime movie. I am sure there are people who have been through this much tragedy and pain or more, but that's not the point. In the context of this book, it just feels like the author was worried we wouldn't understand the main character's pain unless it was magnified x100.The result is something that just feels so over the top it seems to demean so much of the character work that goes on here. It also feels a bit demeaning to people who suffer abuse. I feel like people could be equally as affected and pained in their ongoing life for so much less. The author feels the need to take the abuse to such freakish levels here that it just feels insulting in a way I can't quite pin down. As if this is what is required for someone to be so thoroughly negatively impacted in their life. Or that we, as readers, could not actually empathize with someone if the horrors inflicted on them weren't so over the top.

It is the best book I have ever read about trauma and abuse and is one of the best books I have ever read. It is a brutal book, a deeply wrenching, beautiful book. It is a gentle book with not one false step in its characterization of a young man, Jude, trying to live fully, deeply, morally while haunted and debased by childhood sexual abuse. Sometimes I read in short spurts too disturbed to continue and too teary to see the page and at other times I read late into the night unable to tear myself away. At times I could barely breathe while reading and not just during the horrific descriptions of abuse but also while witnessing the love that Jude's friend and mentors and lover have for him. The author is brilliant at the getting the details right. Whether it is a description of a sumptuous meal, a day at the office, a fight between friends or an everyday conversation it is completely described. I love that A Little Life is so ordinary and extraordinary at the same time and not showy or flashy or manipulative which could easily happen given itsthemes. It is one of the hardest books I have ever read and it is one of the most humane. I thank Edelweiss for giving me this opportunity to read and review A Little Life.

A Reading Experience That Truly Consumed Me By Sarah's Book Shelves I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher (via Netgalley) in exchange for review on my blog.I confess that I had no idea what I was getting into when I started A Little Life. I basically thought it was going to be a male version of The Interestings. And, there are similarities, but A Little Life is much, much darker. It's disturbing, harrowing, relentless, and powerful, but also portrays a strong, hopeful version of friendship. The writing is absolutely gorgeous and it will most likely end up on my Best Books of 2015 list come December. There is nothing little about A Little Life. In fact, it's such a sprawling book that I had trouble distilling my thoughts into a coherent review. Yanagihara threw the kitchen sink at this thing, but she made everything work together seamlessly. To varying degrees, she addressed class, race, sexuality, disability, life purpose / career, secrets, mental issues, and abuse...all overlaid on a foundation of enduring friendship. And, she made all this seem harmoniously complex instead of frustratingly complicated. The lifeblood of this novel is the characters. The four friends met in college, come from disparate backgrounds, and have varying life ambitions. The beginning of the book focuses on introducing each character in bits and pieces (hint: keep a list of key background information on each character as you learn it, because it's hard to keep them straight initially). As the story goes on, Jude becomes the focal point. He's kind, heartbreaking, proud, tough, and maddening. He's a character unlike any other I've encountered in fiction and will stick with me for a long time.I realize that this review is a bit light on plot details and that's intentional. Part of the reading experience, and this book truly is an experience, is peeling back the layers of the characters and gradually understanding what's shaped who they are. Rather, I think the best way to convey the essence of this book is to share the author's thoughts on her writing experience...because I sort of felt the same way reading the book. For one thing, the experience of writing this book was so depleting, so exhausting, so unexpectedly life-altering—as pretentious as that sounds—that I’m still extricating myself from its universe. - Hanya Yanagihara, Slate MagazineWell, I'm still extricating myself and I finished it almost a week ago! A Little Life so consumed me that I had to follow it with a "recovery book" before reading anything else remotely serious. As you can probably guess, A Little Life is definitely not for everyone. It's a great choice for people who appreciate consuming, emotional reading experiences (me!). But, I would avoid it if you prefer the lighter, happier stuff.Check out my blog, Sarah's Book Shelves, for more reviews.

It was fast-paced and action packed. I couldn't put it down." -A Novel Glimpse"It has been a long time since a book made me cry. Considering I read three to four books a week that is saying a lot. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Contains spoilers By J. McCosker Sometimes life shows us our future before we're ready. Like a little glimpse of what is to come if one is patient. This is definitely the case in this story.Alex and Stephanie met when they were in High School, he came over from Russia to play hockey and Stephanie was the one to teach him better english. They fell in love and the next thing you know is he has to go back to Russia, thus breaking the relationship.Fast forward eight years and they are put into each others paths once again. Stephanie has been playing on the safe side of life since Alex left. She thinks she only deserves mediocre love and a job she isn't happy with. Alex sets her soul on fire and reminds her we all deserve the very best.Unfortunately Stephanie has someone else in her life who she has to think about before Alex.Alex has been lost since he left Stephanie the first time, and when he finds her again it's game over. He will do anything to get her back in his life. He's a hot headed jock who comes with many issues. Will he be able to keep his woman once trouble comes? Does love truly conquer all?Firebird made me feel on so many different levels. I got with my husband when I was seventeen so I understood the struggle they had when they were young. I loved how Jennifer Loring showed a different side to the sports aspect then what I've seen before. It was a real story. Is it worth going against the grain in order to achieve everything you've ever wanted? Would you be able to walk away from the only person you've ever wanted for the second time if push came to shove? Here are some of my favorite quotes;“I was so angry because I thought you were rejecting me for your fiancé’s sake. But now I get it. You thought that even if we did sleep together, I’d leave. That’s what I do. And I’d do it to hurt you. Am I right?”“Maybe this sounds stupid, but some people think there are souls that keep meeting in different lives, and in every new life, they search for each other because there’s something they need to learn or do. So if you believe in that kind of thing, we’ve been traveling together for lifetimes, and in this lifetime, we have to complete whatever we left unfinished.”“This is what love is. It’s irrational and extraordinary; it’s pain and sorrow, and joy and laughter. It’s us. It’s always been us.”“Though time can change so many things, I know one thing is true— Time will never change the love I feel for you.”Star Ratings:Plot- 3/5Characters- 3/5Heat- 3/5Writing style- 3/5Overall- 3/5**A copy was provided in exchange for a fair and honest review***Reviewed for SBR Blogs*

Hite 4.5 stars!Okay, so I'm going to get the one negative thing I have to say about Firebird out of the way so that I can sing it's praises like I really want to do. There is cheating and a lot of womanizing in this book. (If those two things bother you, this book is not for you.) It was disturbing to read about the two main characters having sex with other people -- especially when they're thinking about each other. Ewww. BUT I know this stuff happens in real life, so it won't make or a break a book for me. Now, on to the fun part!Besides the cheating part, Firebird was an incredibly good romance. It was fast-paced and action packed. I couldn't put it down. Something new was always happening and the story was constantly building. I was surprised at the twists and turns that took place. Just when I thought the story might be coming to an end, something else would happen to take the story in a new direction.I absolutely loved Aleksandr. To be honest, most of the time he was a big fat jerk. But I kind of loved that about him. He didn't hold back and once I knew why, I appreciated it even more. I don't want to give too much away, but I felt that his story was an important one. I loved the way his character developed over the entire book.Stephanie, on the other hand, drove me nuts at times. One minute, she was a smart and tough chick. The next, she made horrible decisions. I liked her, but at times she made it hard to.Together, Stephanie and Aleksandr were scorching HOT. They couldn't keep their hands off each other! There was a sweetness between the two of them that I loved -- especially from Aleksandr. He was so crude, but he had a secret soft spot when it came to Stephanie. It made me smile a lot.As for the hockey, I liked that Jennifer Loring included some actual hockey plays and not just the players. It added another great dimension to the story. I don't know much about hockey, but it seemed realistic enough to me.I would highly recommend Firebird to adult contemporary romance readers that love sports related romances.**I received an electronic copy of Firebird in exchange for an honest review.

The one good thing about this book is that you actually feel everything that the characters are going thru. You feel pain during the breakups and injury, You feel joy during the happy and love moments. The author has a way of bringing you into the story and loving every minute of it or at least I did.Alex, is a proud Russian and is determined to make his family proud with his hockey career. He's had to sacrifice some things along the way including Stefanie. They were best friends/lovers in school but that ended to soon. He has done some remarkable things like winning the Stanley Cup but also has a reputation of being a bad boy. He is traded to a team that desperately needs help. He is hurt and frustrated but still goes out and plays. He has never got over losing Stefanie.Stefanie, is desperately trying to keep her sports journalist job and lands a job of a lifetime. It has it major throwbacks that she has to deal with all over again.. Sparks fly again but there's a problem, Stefanie is engaged to another man.Alex and Stefanie are good together but have their fair share of problems, just like any relationship does but things go from good to bad in a instant for them. Both are dealing with a bunch of issues, Stefanie runs away while Alex turns to booze and women..not the best but during the healing process both realize that they aren't truly happy unless they are together. It's a roller coaster ride for the both of them but it does end happily for them. I really loved this story! It shows the realness of what can happen in relationships. Everyone has issues and its how we rise above them is how we show our what we're truly capable of. Stefanie and Alex definitely hit the highs and lows but rise above them to find their true selves, which is so remarkable. They find their true callings and where exactly they are supposed to be.

Hessian Roshburg, Hess to the few he calls friends, loves beer, barroom brawls, and breaking into places he’s not supposed to. He also enjoys strolling through the woods—in Kodiak bear form, of course—and scratching his back on trees. After dropping off a stolen file to his friend Dillan, he indulges in one of his favorite pastimes. He visits a gay bar for a few beers and a little dancing. He’s shocked when he bumps into his mate, literally, and it’s none other than a straight-laced, stick-up-his-ass raven shifter named Gilbert. Hess can’t wait to ruffle the guy’s feathers. In an effort to figure out what makes the other shifter tick, he digs a little too deep and uncovers a couple of secrets he shouldn’t, putting not only his own life in jeopardy, but the lives of those in Gilbert’s flock. Can Hess fix his mistake, prove his intentions, and keep his mate and friends safe…all at the same time?

The only thing I didn't find interesting is the lack of transition from a number of paragraphs, it made the book hard to follow. I hope that this will be corrected for the next time.

I enjoyed this one.Hess is a Kodiak bear shifter and the story is mainly told from his point of view. He stands 6' at the shoulder -- No, not when standing on his hind feet but when he's on all fours. That's huge. Hess is military trained, smart, and plans out his visit like a military campaign. With his data all done he strolls into pack territory, scratching his back, ambling along, and thinking of ways to have fun. I loved his easy going character. That was well done.Gilbert is one of a few rescued bird shifters from a lab in Russia. He and his friends live in a converted barn in pack territory. While Gilbert is the main squeeze in this tale, I never got a feel for his raven. Gilbert never has any 'attracted to shiney' moments, hording his 'pretties' or any of that stuff that are associated with ravens. Yes, I did check Wiki -- Ravens are ground horders, playful, and love aerial aerobatics. No, none of that from Gilbert and I doubt being stubborn is a raven traint. Now I realize Gilbert is busy with his flock and still recovering from decades of being in that lab. . . But still. I wanted a bit more from him, to be worthy / a good match / fun / for Hess.Anyway, the story is cute, the relationship has a few hiccups and of course things are happening in pack territory. I'd have liked some feedback on the skirmish. I had a few questions tied up there and if page space was the problem with explaining everything, then I'd have liked less details on the flock. You know, all of their birds, personalities, and what they do in their spare time. Yeah, I felt like feathers were flying in that barn and while I appreciated the background and an idea of where the series is going, I know all those names and attributes will be given all over again in Hector and Rock's story. Just saying.Four stars for the humor, the loveable bear in Hess and his settling down in a barn with the flock. Not quite a fox among chickens analogy, but close. By the way, I'm sure Gilbert and Hess will learn to deal with thin walls . . . - Dan's Wife

I definitely have favorite characters (Jared and Carson by far) and favorite stories. I also love her Loving Nip and Paranormals Love series, also read numerous times. This particular story wasn't one of the best, but was very good because her characters are always interesting. The main reason I'm writing this review is, if the author reads the reviews (and I'm hoping she does), I want her to know I would love to see a story with Borscht's and Tullion's brother Aleksei. Since Aleksei was so against his brothers having male partners, you know we have to see Aleksei find a male partner of his own!! What glorious discord and conflict that would be.

Lee and Leanne were twins - born to British parents in South America where their father was employed by the oil industry. After the double tragedy of seeing her husband murdered and baby daughter dying, mother and remaining son return to Britain, where life becomes bleak for both. In this book Tanya Allan changes direction. No spies, cops, aliens or mystical transformations. This is a tale of one person’s journey from a dark place to a place of sunshine and hope. Although too young to know his sister, Lee is convinced that she is part of him – the stronger part. Rejecting his birth gender, we join the new Leanne on her journey from being someone or something she despised, in a dysfunctional home, to being closer to the person she feels she ought to be. Badger’s is a night club that employs only attractive girls who undertake startling displays of dexterity behind the bars. Indeed, unknowingly, they now employ a boy, admittedly one who looks, sounds and feels like a girl. Badger’s gives the new Leanne a step up, giving her the boost she needs to become the person she knows she should be. With her eyes set on becoming a teacher, she meets some colourful characters along the way. There’s Kathy, a fellow bar-girl who likes boys who look like girls. There’s Adam, a young man with whom Leanne falls in and out of Love. There’s Jessica, her life-long friend who knew about Lee’s secret before anyone else – that she was really Leanne. Finally, there’s Leanne herself – she holds a secret that not even she was aware of. She joins Jessica on a holiday in the USA. In America, Leanne meets a man who will change her life forever, sending her to a whole new world - almost literally.

Yet this wonderful young lady with a horrible childhood, has such a sense of integrity and self worth that she impresses everyone around her, gets a college education and heads to a remote village in Ghana and succeeds and impresses in all she does. If only everyone in the world was likelier there would be peace and harmony. Wonderful story.

True to life by wonderful By Amazon Customer Probably the most realistic of the author's many books, this is an intriguing and hopeful story. The main character discovers not just who she is, but also finds a purpose for her life.I especially enjoyed the last few chapters, set in Ghana. I thought of parallels and differences with the life of my aunt, who trained as a nurse and spent much of her life in Zambia training girls to be nurses.

By Richard Jennings The second half of the book was about her experiences as a teacher in Africa and had little to do with her transgender being. While that was interesting, it was unexpected and not as interesting as the book's first half about her journey to becoming a trans women.
