What if you could ask God anything? What would you ask? And how would He answer?
Chelsea Chambers is on her own. After a public split from her NFL superstar husband, Chelsea takes a bold step out of the limelight and behind the counter of the Higher Grounds Café, an old-fashioned coffee shop in dire need of reinvention. But when her courage, expert planning, and out-of-this-world cupcakes fail to pay the bills, this newly single mom finds herself desperate for help. Better yet, a miracle.
Then a curious stranger lands at Chelsea’s door, and with him, an even more curious string of events. Soon, customers are flocking to the Higher Grounds Café, and not just for the cupcakes and cappuccino. They’ve come for the internet connection to the divine. Now the café has become the go-to place for people in search of answers to life’s biggest questions.
When a catastrophe strikes and her ex comes calling, Chelsea begins to wonder if the whole universe is conspiring against her quest to make it on her own. Review “Fans of Lucado's comforting stories of hope (e.g.,The Crippled Lamb) will delight in this tale of love, loss, and redemption, coauthored with Eric Newman and Candace Lee. Its likable, sympathetic characters and several surprising plot twists make it a charming and inspiring read. Reminiscent of the movie It's a Wonderful Life with the accessible religious undertones of writings by G.K. Chesterton (The Book of Father Brown), this captivating novel will also appeal to readers who believe in the afterlife and angels.” (Library Journal)“With his coauthors, bestselling inspirational author Lucado brings his trademark blend of familial warmth, spiritual struggle, and saving grace to this imaginative novel. Readers will relate to the tough questions Chelsea and her family ask, and they will delight in the faith that brings communities together and leads Chelsea into the most fulfilling time of her life.” (Booklist)“Lucado has penned a sweet, uplifting novel about God’s love. This book is a treasure with a surprising glimpse into the spiritual realm with angels and warfare. There’s also romance, family relationships and a quirky small town to round out the picture. … a great choice for encouraging the soul.---4 stars (Romantic Times Book Reviews)“Readers will enjoy spending an afternoon sipping a latte and reading this winsome novel. The authors succeed in bringing depth to their characters and in crafting a story that is both lighthearted and filled with spiritual significance.” (CBA Retailers + Resources)

I really related to the main character and found healing within the pages of this book By Melinda Lancaster I'm not new to the work of Max Lucado but this was my first time reading one of his fictional books. At first, just ever so briefly, it seemed a bit hokey. If you are tempted to put it down at first, do yourself a big favor and wait.It took a chapter or two for me to warm up to the story. By then, I could not put the book down. I actually read it in one evening. I suppose I should have anticipated that from this author.I really love it when a writer uses fiction to speak powerful messages of truth. "Miracle at the Higher Ground Cafe" is one of those books you could easily pass to an unbeliever or someone struggling with their faith. I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't benefit from reading it.I was reminded, while reading, that there is a battle raging between darkness and light. Wrong and right. And not only that, but God is on our side. He has a plan and purpose which we can't always see and is always working in our lives. Things can look "messy" from our earthly perspective but the "heavenly view" is much more accurate and clear.Another of the many messages that I took away from this book is that prayers are never wasted. They are powerful and God hears every single one. While He may not act on them immediately, our petitions are never forgotten.I saw so much of myself in the main character of this book. I believe that most readers will. Life is a challenge. We all have hurts. There are times when we harbor unforgiveness. So often we can't see the whole picture. But, as this book reminded me, we can ask God for greater understanding and a sense of His presence and He will answer. He doesn't miss anything in our lives and we never walk alone.I really enjoyed this book and found the message to be encouraging!

By Shelf-Esteem Coffee house cozy and uniquely uplifting are the best way I can describe Max Lucado’s new fiction title Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe. From their seats in heaven, angels have an amazing view of life on earth and of the “light” emanating from holy places and people. One of those places just happens to be San Antonio’s Higher Grounds Cafe. Preparing for it’s grand reopening this Victorian style home turned cafe was established on the principles of hospitality and prayer. The cafe’s new owner, Chelsea Chambers, hopes to start a new life apart from her adulterous husband, former NFL superstar, Sawyer Chambers. What she can’t see is the sinister darkness that threatens to envelope both Chelsea and the cafe. Her dire circumstances require divine intervention.Lucado has created a few particularly likable characters for this story. My top three are Chelsea, Bo, and Manny. I’ll start with Manny, he made me chuckle a number of times due to his complete disregard for fashion and his propensity for disaster. Through all of his fumbling and bumbling, he is humble, thoughtful, and always there when Chelsea finds herself in a pinch. Chelsea, as the main character, has the most growing up to do–readers will see an inspiring transformation take place in her life. Rounding out my favorites is the cafe’s long time patron Bo. A bedrock of faith, Bo lends wisdom and perspective to Chelsea’s troubles.I found Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe to be reminiscent of two other great Christian books. The first is The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. Where The Screwtape Letters highlight the subversive efforts of demons, Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe gives the opposite view by portraying the efforts of angels on our behalf. My absolute favorite scene depicts angels rejoicing over a life newly surrendered to Christ. The second title I am reminded of is Max Lucado’s newest non-fiction title Before Amen. Because this title is still fresh in my mind, I noticed the presence of a simple prayer of surrender “God I need help,” and deeper prayers which follow the “Pocket Prayer” structure seen in Before Amen. Readers who have enjoyed either The Screwtape Letters or Before Amen will also enjoy this book. The importance of prayer, the presence of unseen spiritual forces, as well as God’s willingness to hear and respond to prayer are major elements of the book. Furthermore, it possesses spiritual lesson in faith, forgiveness, and reconciliation which make for a very encouraging and heart-warming tale. I give Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe 4/5 stars.I received this book free as a member of the Litfuse blogger program. I was not required to write a positive review. With a mix of coffee, faith, pastry yumminess and a tale of redemption, Max Lucado "Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe" takes place in the backgrounds of San Antonio where newly separated Chelsea reopens her moms' coffee shop while trying to make sense of the chaos that had become her life. The story is very whimsical though at times sometimes, the interplay between Chelsea and Manny, her newly hired employee whose all thumbs and left leg, seemed to come across convoluted during various moments in the story.Chelsea complicated relationship with her husband along with trying to keep her business and financial situation afloat, captures the modern day turmoil that many todays often experience. For all that, though, the story, however, comes across as not just a message of hope but in keeping the faith (and communication) alive with God and sometimes, it simply means trying to let go of trying to be in control and simply trusting in God enough to let the situations go and placing it in His hands. Not a very easy message for many these days.Chelsea character was developed enough to capture the readers interest and move the story along; Manny, though serving as the interloper in the story, sometimes came across a little confusing and forced and the initial set up could have used a little more character development. All that aside though, this is at the same time minor details, as the story is centered on the importance of hope, forgiveness and faith, particularly when faced with deep hurt, as many of the customers come to Higher Grounds Cafe, looking for and often finding it, along with good coffee and pastries as well. This is a book that will leave an impression on seeking God; It's a story at the end and the focus shouldn't be on the side story of Chelsea dealing with the situations that have brought her to Higher Ground, instead, reading this, it's a warm and fuzzy fictional tale that when one looks beneath the surface, discovers in a story form, a tale of the importance of being strong in faith, even when we feel our weakest, seeking God even when the answers may not seem clear and as the story weaves through it's tale, the importance of forgiveness in order to be free.Unforgiveness is shown how broken and it binds all who suffers in its shadows and with the "Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe", the reader is drawn in to touch the surface of what does it mean and what can it look like.Overall, this is a nice summer or in cases of bad weather, reading to be done with a nice cup of coffee (or tea) and your favorite pastry and an open heart to the miracle and healing of God.***Thank you to Litfuse Publicity for the opportunity to read and review this book in exchange for my personal opinion***
