Visiting Cottonwood Creek By Colleen "By the Banks of Cottonwood Creek" explores the unique culture, customs, and landmarks of North Dakota through the eyes of Kelly Jorgenson. On a quest for peace, Kelly reflects on the tragedy in his past as well as the spiritual and emotional journey that has led him to North Dakota and his first pastorate where he experiences a warm welcome characteristic of rural communities. We watch as Kelly befriends a cat named Mildred, gets acquainted with his new parishioners, learns to adapt to a new culture, endeavors to understand three very different women, and tries to heal relationships that were wounded at his brother's tragic death. The story thoughtfully delves into ways people deal with grief and consequences of avoiding the grieving process after experiencing a great loss. The author skillfully introduces us to interesting and even quirky characters in the story without letting them get lost in the mix. Her beautiful and descriptive writing brings the people and places to life, allowing the reader's imagination to picture every detail. "A half moon hung in the sky, a willing partner with the stars in lighting the night sky.....Indeed, the sky seemed like a bowl tipped over with a million stars twinkling from horizon to horizon."I was amused with passages like, "Dunderweder. That's German for we're going to get a thunderstorm." Equally amusing were Kelly's empathy and his friend Tiny's apathy for minnows being used as bait while Kelly showed his ineptness as a fisherman. For those who have never visited North Dakota, this book will allow you a glimpse into the everyday life and places of North Dakotans, perhaps even planting a seed of desire to visit and experience it for yourself!

The prairie and the pastor By Sandi Lee Although I was born in North Dakota and have come to love it's scrubbed beauty, there were many things I learned after reading this novel. I always feel as if God has just swept the landscape leaving it clean and free of non essentials and the author puts the unique scenery into poetic words. The beauty of nature isn't the only evocative language in the book - much of the novel is sprinkled with word pictures giving the reader a vivid look into rural life. The small dying towns of the region are given their place and the complicated life of a modern farmer is revealed. Kelly's lack of knowledge about the state is a perfect vehicle for describing the old customs and the changes that have come about through the past generations. After reading the book, I am determined to visit the Peace Gardens. The story of Kelly and his journey are interesting to the reader partly because he is a young man living the Christian life (to the best of his ability) in an unfamiliar place while problems crop up around him. His thoughts and actions are refreshingly wholesome, a somewhat rare occurrence in today's youth. The good citizens of ND are portrayed as solid hardworking folks, people you can rely on. I am reminded of the Jan Karon books and can see a series about the young pastor, his wife and their neighbors. My only critique would be that the story wraps up very neatly; perhaps because the author is finished with Pastor Kelly? North Dakota is an area largely unexplored by novelists and could provide more interesting story lines as the oil boom continues and the state continues to grow in national importance.

Just I’m a prairie girl - always will be. It doesn’t matter that I have lived in an urban center for 45 years. I make regular trips back home to get my prairie fix. Now there is a new book that can transport me back to the prairie whenever I pick up Gayle Larson Schuck’s new novel, “BY THE BANKS OF COTTONWOOD CREEK”.The cover photo introduces the reader to a bucolic prairie scene complete with gnarled trees, a bridge covering a meandering creek, framed with prairie grass. Be prepared for an engaging story of joy and fulfillment along with sorrow and pain-of-loss while you follow young Kelly Jorgenson to his first parish assignment in North Dakota.Reeling from the loss of his twin brother in a tragic accident some years before, young Pastor Jorgenson leans on his relationship with God to help him understand his new flock while continuing to process the loss of his brother and the estrangement of his parents. This story flows beautifully. The reader will find poignant moments that anyone can relate to. Find me a family that hasn’t had to deal with chronic illness or the sorrow and pain of losing a loved one.The author has developed interesting characters within the story. Like most of us they are flawed, carrying their own baggage and just trying to figure out their own journey. Pastor Jorgenson brings a humble presence - a mixture of self doubt and a keen desire to help others, along with a sense of humor and regular dialogue with his higher power as he seeks guidance in his new role. If you like Pastor Tim in Jan Karon’s Mitford Series, you will enjoy this book.I especially love the North Dakota places described so lovingly – any reader from another part of the country will have a new appreciation for the beauty of the state.
